FORMER Richmond coach Danny Frawley has slammed the Tigers for their “mental disintegration” in the wake of Saturday’s loss to Sydney at the MCG.
The Tigers led by as much as 36 points midway through the second term only to concede nine goals to three to be overrun in the second half.
It was Richmond’s fourth narrow loss of the season and would have been its fourth loss under a goal if it weren’t for a Gary Rohan major with 12 seconds remaining.
The 7-5 Tigers currently sit in fifth position on the ladder and appear set to play finals but St Kilda great Frawley believes the yellow and black pose no threat to rivals should they reach September.
“Every coach in the competition would love to play Richmond in a final at the moment because (of) their mental disintegration,” Frawley said.

“(Damien Hardwick) has done an outstanding job this year but the facts remain — you are in any game you play against Richmond.
“If I’m a coach, I would love to play Richmond in a final because (if) we’re four goals down, five goals down, if you bring heat and pack it in and give it to them, they will disintegrate under pressure as we saw yesterday and as we’ve seen in three or four games.”
Richmond has lost to Western Bulldogs (five points), Fremantle (two), GWS (three) and now Sydney (nine) in close finishes this year.
It is a sign the Tigers crumble under intense pressure from opposition teams according to Frawley who disputed Essendon champion Matthew Lloyd anointing Damien Hardwick the coach of the year in a column for the Herald Sun.
“People go ‘gee, if they didn’t lose those games they’d be on top of the ladder’,” Frawley said on SEN.
“Football is a ruthless game. Damien Hardwick is not the coach of the year.
“I don’t know how he could be the coach of the year when there’s this mental stigma.

“Point in case, yesterday 15-minute mark of the last quarter (Shaun) Grigg, (who’s) not a bad kick and not a great kick, kicks off one step 30 metres out from Sydney’s goal.
“Turns the ball over, spills to (Sam) Reid (who goals). Game over. They were 15 points up at that stage and that to me is mental disintegration.”
The Tigers kept the Swans goalless in the opening term and Sydney didn’t record their first major until the seven-minute mark of the second term, while Richmond had piled on six of their own.
There is no doubt Richmond was in a winning position and midfielder Josh Caddy said the Tigers should have been able to secure the four points.

“It was really disappointing not to win. We were in a position to win the game and probably should have,” he told Channel 9.
“Their ladder position probably doesn’t reflect the side they are. They’ve been so good for so long and they’ll be thereabouts again.”
Former St Kilda and North Melbourne midfielder Nick Dal Santo also raised concerns over the Tigers’ ability to win close matches despite having a number of opportunities this year to learn from their mistakes.
“Their three close losses a month or so ago, have they learnt anything from it?” he said. “Watching the game yesterday I was worried.”

100% correct. Would bend over like a deck of blokes at the blue oyster day come september this club.
-
cant argue with that - need to cop it a bit more - dimma has never really come under much pressure from the media which is stunning whe you consider some of the garbage he has said over the yrs - -would love just one journo to ask him point blank why he continues to play players who we have video footage of shortening their steps on multiple and consistent occassions
-
While I agree with the sentiment, pretty cheap coming from Frawley.

Damien Hardwick hits back at Danny Frawley
Chris Cavanagh,
Herald Sun

DAMIEN Hardwick has taken a swipe at former Richmond coach Danny Frawley, accusing him of creating “noise” to stay “relevant” after comments made about the club’s “mental disintegration” late in close games.
Frawley, who coached the Tigers from 2000-2004, said on Sunday that “Every coach in the competition would love to play Richmond in a final at the moment because (of) their mental disintegration”.
Richmond suffered a nine-point loss to Sydney on Saturday after leading by as much as 36 points in the second quarter, the defeat the club’s fourth by a single-figure margin this season.
But Hardwick dismissed Frawley’s comments as “external noise” and said while Richmond had lost close games this season it had also won close matches.
“That’s their job, media these days,” Hardwick said.
“The jobs are probably getting less and less and they’ve got to make more and more noise to get on the back page to make themselves relevant. So I don’t really worry about it.
“At the end of the day the game’s a mental game. We’ve won some really close games. I look at the Melbourne game, the Essendon game, the Collingwood game, the West Coast game — they’re all close games.
“We’ve won those games, we’ve lost some close games as well. The way we play the game is incredibly competitive and I’m proud of the way our boys put their best foot forward week-in, week-out.
“Our fans know we come to play every week. Out of the 11 of the 12 games we’ve been in them and we’ve won seven, lost five. I’m prepared to take that.”
Hardwick pointed to the example of the Brisbane Lions in 2003 as a team which proved it could overcome a string of close losses.
“They won the flag that year,” Hardwick said.
“They lost four games and had a draw, by under 10 points. So it happens to the best of them.”

A parallel drawn between us and the great Brisbane side, get excited men it's going to happen

Didnt go far enough. Its not just been this yr it has been an on going thing for many.
This club is all about maintaining what they have never ever prepared to make the hard decisions that will mean going backwards even more.
This is what happens when you dont make calls on blokes like Edwards, Houli, Grigg Ellis etc you manage to stay middling to okay but you will never ever get better than that.
It is a question worth asking, Did we actually have a full rebuild imo the answer to that is no.

Whoa, hang on Claw. You do remember bottoming out under Wallace & then giving the job to an untried coach who started his coaching career by winning a wooden spoon? That's as low as you can get ... now, can you name that untried coach & how did the full re-build you want so badly work out for us? :-\
-
TBH we have never had a full rebuild. Hardwick started off by saying no more short cuts but he then proceeded to do just that. We never traded anyone of note to get more picks and even used picks on recycled and mature players.

WHOA there son. Rather than a long winded post just one example instead.
You do remember Richardsoons comments about the supporters not accepting a prolonged period near the bottom.
We started a rebuild got about half way thru and then the shortcuts started and continue right thru to this day.
Its never been acceptable to this regime to spend any sort of prolonged time near the bottom, nope they continue to happy in the middle somewhere.
It is reflected right through the club the supporters and everything we do.

Tiger coaches rumble as Frawley bags Hardwick again

Commentator and former Richmond coach Danny Frawley has backed up his claims that the Tigers are mentally fragile and that Damien Hardwick can’t seriously be considered as coach of the year.
In a burst that smacked of a failed coach trying to pump up his own tyres, Frawley said he'd love to be in charge of a team coming up against Hardwick in a final.
He initially questioned Hardwick’s credentials after Richmond lost a fourth close match for the season last Sunday, and Hardwick shot back on Wednesday that the comments were just “external noise” and typical of commentators trying to “make themselves relevant and get on the back pages”.
But Frawley didn’t back down, instead saying Hardwick’s response was proof the criticism was on the mark.
“Putting myself in Dimma’s shoes, when there’s criticism that comes back at you, when you do react to it, it probably indicates that the comments were on the money,” Frawley told SEN Breakfast on Thursday morning.
“I’ve been there as a coach many times … when you have to justify it, it probably means that it’s thereabouts.
“Dimma backing over it yesterday (means he) obviously took it to heart a little bit and that’s fair enough, he has to protect his patch.
“I’m here to make comments that are fair and reasonable.”
Frawley was the last man to coach Richmond to a finals win, taking the Tigers to a preliminary final in 2001.
However, his limitations were found out quickly with the team dropping to 14th the next year, then 13th and 16th before Frawley was replaced by Terry Wallace.
-
Yeh, look.... Statistically speaking, Spudley is the more successful so how can he be bitter?
If Frawley is a failed coach, what does that make Hardwick - A failure with a charmed existence?
What's worse?

Thanks for the stuff

We all know that until RFC makes and wins a final Harwdick will never be considered a good coach and to call him coach of the year after 11 rounds is simply a joke.
-
Well we did spit on him after all

Think if we had a young Jonathan Brown come in as CHF now we would be pretty hard to beat. Even a young Richo

Barrett in his "Sliding Doors" column today:
IF ... Dimma keeps refuting there's an issue ...
THEN ... we ain't believing him until the Tigers win a close one. And then another one.

Spud had less to work with. Spud is also correct. This capitulation is doing my stuffing head in. This team is mentally incapable of winning a grand final, they do not have the mongrel in them. Too many 'she will be right' and hightlight reel posers out there. Build a team of dedicated mongrel bastards not 'good blokes' or mercs who are not going to do what needs to be done. Why can't the coach get this through his stuffing head.

Hooter sounding like a darksider .....if that ain't the canary in the mineshaft, I dunno what is.... :shh

The biggest, overall issue, is they think they're better than they are.
I understand that to a degree, that's what sport psychology is about but there needs to be a viable quantity of quality for that to succeed as opposed to the endless, press conference rebuttals.

Even I have my limits, first time bad , twice maybe bad luck, three times is getting stuffing ridiculous, four times is a chronic habit and a curse with an undeniable issue that needs addressing.
