Alex Rance must be warned by the AFL after obvious staging in incident with Lance Franklin
Jon Ralph,
Herald Sun
18 June 2017
ALEX Rance is the AFL’s Errol Flynn, a dashing modern-day Robin Hood attempting to free poor Richmond supporters from oppression.
On Saturday he again showed why the success-starved Tigers fans believe he might the greatest stuff that ever lived.
Yet it is incumbent upon the AFL to warn him that the actor in him should be reserved for his The Footy Show antics.
His dive when brushed on the chest by Lance Franklin earned him a free kick despite belonging in the realms of the World Wrestling Federation.
It was staging, plain and simple.
And when you assess the AFL’s rules for that very sin it’s hard not to think he won’t get a warning from the match review panel.
The rules state a player can be reported for staging for acts that include excessive exaggeration of contact in an unsportsmanlike manner.
The staging will be reportable if it may affect umpires’ decision-making, incite a melee or not be in the spirit of the game.
A player gets a reprimand for a first offence but no fine or suspension.
Rance’s act ticks every one of those boxes.
Franklin had already been reported for his hit on Connor Menadue and the brush to the chest did affect the decision-making of an umpire.
Rance won a critical free kick as he attempted to stave off Sydney’s surging midfield with his brilliant second-half heroics.
The league has confirmed this year that it often warns players about antics or troublesome behaviour through a quiet word to their footy manager on Mondays.
But Angus Monfries received an official warning in 2011 when his dive led to Jordan Lewis being suspended for two weeks.
Kane Cornes was warned by the AFL in 2010 when he collapsed to the ground after an incident involving Corey Enright.
Analyst David King warned “staging was coming back into vogue” when Matt Crouch collapsed when jumper-punched by Tom Hawkins.
But Crouch was clearly hit in the head and reacted to the force.
Rance wildly exaggerated mild force in an action that might have seen Franklin reported on the day if not for commonsense umpiring.
Hawkins’ jumper punch has immediately recalibrated what is acceptable for players, who have immediately stopped jumper punches to the head.
Rance would probably laugh off a public warning but it would put every player on notice that it is an act the AFL doesn’t condone.
An official warning won’t hurt his reputation but will clearly educate the thousands about what is acceptable over the white line.

What a load of crap!
If the umpire did his job properly and didnt get sucked in there is no issue. The fact they gave Rance a free is on them.
It's a players job to get the footy and if an umpire wants to give away stupid free kicks it's something they need to address.

Good old Handbrake up to his tricks again.

Makes it sound like Rance is a repeat offender.
AFL said they were going to tackle staging. They haven't.
Nor have they rewarded the tackler for holding the ball.
Nor penalised players for deliberately pinning the ball against an opponent they are tackling.
Rance may as well take a dive then. And it was against Buddy which made me laugh :)
-
Diving for a free kick is about the only safety net available to defenders these days.
The AFL has made the rules of the game heavily in favour of the forward. For example, the deliberate rushed behind paid against us in the Dreamtime game.

What about all the dog acts by Buddy, including hitting Rance in the throat?

Rance did what he had to do to make Buddy finally think twice about he since he kept getting away with it. But nah staging is bad ::)

The Match Review Panel has assessed Richmond defender Alex Rance for staging during Saturday's clash against Sydney, but will take no action against the star Tiger.
In the dying minutes of the third quarter of the Swans' nine-point win, Lance Franklin and Rance engaged in a shoving match with the Tiger awarded a free kick after going to ground.
The MRP said Franklin struck Rance in the "upper chest" and under the MRP's guidelines, the Panel said "any exaggeration of the contact that was made to Rance was not excessive".

RANCE DIDN'T DIVE, SAYS AFL
Richmond defender Alex Rance was seen by some to be lucky to escape without a fine or at least a warning from the match review panel for staging, but the AFL had defended the decision.
Rance won a free kick after dramatically falling backwards when he was pushed by Lance Franklin in the second quarter at the MCG on Saturday.
Asked today if Rance was staging, football operations boss Simon Lethlean said: "I'm not so sure.
"If you look at the vision, it’s a 6’7 bloke pushing pretty hard at the top of the throat. I think he has every right to fall over. He got up pretty quick," Lethlean said on SEN.
“If a 6’7 guy like Buddy pushes you in the throat, a few of you would fall over.”

Not the same incident but If Tom Hawkins gets a week for jumper punching why hasn't Buddy got a week? There was one in the first half I think. If I knew how I would show you in slow motion the incident and compare the two of them.
Maybe Sydney Swan Buddy has the same get-out-of-jail free card that Barry Hall had. :rollin
