VFL Tigers too good for Northern Blues

richmondfc.com.au
25 June 2017

Richmond 16.19-115 def Northern Blues 4.7-31

The VFL Tigers recorded their fifth victory of the season on Sunday afternoon, defeating Northern Blues by 84 points at the Swinburne Centre.

Neither side could be separated at the first break but the VFL Tigers booted 14 goals over the following three quarters, while holding the Blues to just two majors at the other end.

Richmond development coach Xavier Clarke said the side recovered from a closely fought opening term to blow away the travellers.

“I think we didn’t use the footy great when we won it in the first quarter,” Clarke said.

“We were a little bit jumpy, tried to go a bit fast at times and didn’t choose the right options.

“Once we knew we could fix that up, go forward and use our numbers and players around the footy, and improve our efficiency by foot, we started to get rewarded on the scoreboard.

“Everything structurally, we were doing pretty well, and we were winning the footy. We just had to use it a bit better”.

With the Blues keen to continue their impressive form in the VFL season to date, the Tigers battled hard to take the early ascendancy, and were rewarded when Tyson Stengle produced a crafty snap for the first of the day.

Jake Aarts also joined in the scoring action with his first and only goal for the day, however, a determined Blues outfit fought back with goals from Matthew Korcheck and Patrick Kerr.

Usual suspects Anthony Miles and Jacob Ballard were involving themselves heavily throughout the midfield, while the returning Nick Vlastuin showed constant poise and composure playing across the back half.

With the chance to square their season’s ledger at five wins and five losses, the VFL Tigers came out with a vengeance in the second quarter, putting six goals on the board to stretch clear by 32 points at the main break.

Taylor Hunt set the tone early in the term with a monstrous snap from 40 metres, while Ballard followed suit with a classy set shot from a similar distance on a tough angle.

Skipper Sam Darley was using the ball to deadly effect on the wing, and his pinpoint pass set up Mabior Chol, whose subsequent finish was equally as impressive.

While Hunt and Jake Batchelor both added majors to the ever-growing list of goalscorers moments later, it was a goal by a particular Tiger cub that proved to be the feel-good moment of the day.

After providing intense pressure at a series of contests in the forward-50, Jack Graham found himself with ball in hand only 15 metres from goal, and made no mistake with his effort.

The first-year player was instantly swamped by teammates from all corners of the ground, while the onlooking Tiger fans provided plenty of gusto celebrating in the Jack Dyer Stand.

While the Blues managed to peg a single goal late in the quarter, the Tigers maintained their fierce pressure into the second half to complete their second biggest victory this year, behind their victory over North Ballarat in Round 1.

Miles, after gathering 16 of his eventual 38 disposals in the first half, produced a clever dribbled finish to add to his well-rounded performance, while Corey Ellis produced a spectacular mark in the goal square to register his first goal.

With the midfield duo producing countless moments of quality, it was time for the big men to step up, Chol soccerring home his second before Ivan Maric snapped truly from close range.

A couple of 50 metre penalties resulted in quick-fire goals to Jacob Townsend and Ryan Bathie at the end of the third term, with the result all but sealed with a quarter still to play.

While the scoring slowed down at the Swinburne Centre, there was still time for Batchelor to nail his second goal, while Vlastuin also went forward to add his name to the 13 individual goal kickers for the day.

With two consecutive victories now under their belt, the VFL Tigers look to next Saturday’s clash with Essendon VFL at Windy Hill.

The match will commence at 2:10pm.

Small defender Steve Morris came off the ground with an apparent injury in the Tigers' 84-point win, although his current status remains unknown.

After being sidelined for six weeks with a shoulder injury, defender Nick Vlastuin made a successful comeback and kicked a goal.

Midfielder Anthony Miles (38 disposals, one goal) had the most possessions on the ground, while fellow ball-winner Jacob Townsend was also prominent with 27 disposals.

Big man Ivan Maric (one goal) dominated the ruck battle, and Taylor Hunt performed well playing between wing and half-back.

Along with Hunt, Jake Batchelor and Mabior Chol kicked two goals apiece.

Development and VFL midfield coach, Xavier Clarke's summary of the AFL and VFL-listed players from Sunday’s Round 10 VFL win over the Northern Blues.

Anthony Miles

38 disposals, nine clearances, six marks, one goal.

Another dominant performance in the midfield. Continues his great form in the VFL.

Jacob Townsend

28 disposals, eight marks, five clearances, one goal.

Had a quiet first half. Had only seven disposals up to half time, so for him to finish with 28 was pleasing to see. Was rewarded with a goal and laid some good tackles which was also pleasing.

Taylor Hunt

24 disposals, four marks, two clearances, two goals.

Was really good today, played the majority of the game on the wing and was rewarded with some good goals. Also ran through the midfield.

Nathan Broad

19 disposals, seven marks, one tackle.

Starting to get a bit of consistency in his game now. Went forward and took a few good marks and was solid down back.

Corey Ellis

19 disposals, five marks, three tackles, one goal.

Had a pretty good game. Had a corky in the first contest, but still had an impact.

Nick Vlastuin

19 disposals, seven marks, one clearance, one goal.

Played his first game after a six-week spell with a shoulder injury. He looked really good down back, gave us great coverage and defensive pressure. Also got the chance to play some midfield in the last quarter and was rewarded with a goal.

Jack Graham

15 disposals, three marks, two tackles, one goal.

Played his second game back, and had 70% game time. I think this kid’s going to be a really good player for us, we’re looking forward to him getting some consistency in his game. Hopefully, he can push for senior selection towards the end of the year.

Tyson Stengle

15 disposals, four marks, two tackles, one goal.

Was held pretty well all day. They went to him as a target, but his work rate was really good. Could have hit the scoreboard a bit heavier, but he’s always in the game. He’s hard to tackle, and makes things happen when he wins the footy.

Jake Batchelor

14 disposals, five marks, three tackles, two goals.

Played a variety of roles, started in the backline but went forward and kicked two goals, which was pleasing for him. He’s been fantastic for us, always provides good leadership and is a general in our backline.

Ryan Garthwaite

14 disposals, eight marks, one tackle.

Played a different role for us by going forward for the whole game. Started the game really well, and took the first mark of the game after we won the first clearance. Finished with three behinds, but I thought his leading pattern and his contests in the forward 50 were outstanding.

Steven Morris

14 disposals, four marks, three tackles.

Started the game well, looked lively, and was up and about after kicking four goals last week. Unfortunately it looks like he sustained a hamstring injury halfway through the third quarter. We’ll re-assess that during the week.

Mabior Chol

11 disposals, five marks, one tackle, two goals.

Played a couple of different roles. Went back briefly, but also hit the scoreboard well. He had a really good impact and looked lively once he got into the game.

Ivan Maric

11 disposals, 16 hit-outs, four marks, two goals.

Kicked a really nice snap from the pocket, which got the players up and going. He shows great leadership and gives us everything he’s got.

Ivan Soldo

Eight disposals, 17 hit-outs, four marks.

Didn’t touch a lot of the footy, but took some really nice contested marks around the ground and got our attack up and going from there.

Watched the stream of the game and he looked a class above, very smooth in his movement and nails his handballs. Will no doubt add to our midfield if he can stay injury free and could be the monster mid we have been looking for.

Said it after I spoke to him at the season launch. Very impressive young man is Jack Graham.

At kindergarten his aim was that good he could hit a fly from 10 meters away with a pea shooter, he was a gun in our group

Poor memory. He missed his mother's mouth and that is why he slipped in the draft to pick 53. :shh

Jack Graham equals Miles exit. Hopefully we'll get a 2nd rounder (and use it on Naish) for him.
