AFL Round 16
St Kilda vs RICHMOND
Saturday Night, 8th July @ Etihad Stadium
Good luck squeezing everyone in. Potentially another lockout like the one a few years ago.
-
If you want decent reserved seats on level 2 you have to sit above the Saints cheersquad
Online the only away area seats are level 1 & they are crap
And BTW Saints have out the prices up. Another minnow club cashing in on playing a club that brings in the crowds
The AFL'S variable ticket pricing strikes again :banghead
-
Who's home game is this would rather it at the MCG.
-
OE, its the saints home game and the post should be titled accordingly (saints vs us).

But, I always put us first in the game thread title and then list whose home game it is and other match details in the opening post ;).

Match preview: St Kilda v Richmond
afl.com.au
3 July 2017
SUMMARY
Richmond has arguably been the most honest team in the competition and has generally been very tough to beat. St Kilda will need to find a way to break through a stingy Tigers defence. The feats of Alex Rance are well-known but David Astbury has played career-best football this season. It all starts in the midfield though, and Damien Hardwick has a formidable one-two punch with Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin at his disposal. Seb Ross and Koby Stevens have both been used in negating roles at times and could mind Richmond's guns. Both sides should be confident after coming off road wins – Richmond was brave against Port Adelaide while St Kilda won its third straight game against Fremantle. Jake Carlisle is returning to some of his finest form and will need to again play well to help nullify the aerial threat of Jack Riewoldt.
WHERE AND WHEN: Etihad Stadium, Saturday, July 8, 7.25PM AEST
LAST FIVE TIMES
R22, 2016, St Kilda 7.13 (55) d Richmond 6.10 (46) at the MCG
R16, 2015, Richmond 13.11 (89) d St Kilda 10.13 (73) at Etihad Stadium
R22, 2014, Richmond 15.8 (98) d St Kilda 10.12 (72) at the MCG
R15, 2014, Richmond 18.9 (117) d St Kilda 11.7 (73) at Etihad Stadium
R14, 2013, Richmond 17.17 (119) d St Kilda 8.7 (55) at the MCG
THE SIX POINTS
1. It was one of the lowest scoring games of 2016 when the teams last played. In perfect conditions at the MCG, only 13 goals were kicked.
2. Richmond is ranked third for inside-50s and second for marks in that part of the ground. In comparison, the Saints are 12th for inside-50s but rank third for marking it once the footy gets in there.
3. St Kilda’s win against Richmond late in 2016 was its first against the Tigers since round 21, 2010. Richmond won the previous six matches.
4. Richmond is ranked second for points conceded, with only 77 per game. It has kept its opposition to 80 points or fewer in each of its last eight matches.
5. St Kilda is aiming for four consecutive wins for the first time since rounds 17-20, 2011.
6. Tigers forward Jack Riewoldt is ranked No. 96 in the Schick AFL Player Ratings while his cousin Nick is No. 150.
IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR … Jack Steven
The star midfielder hasn't been at his usual high standards recently and has been held to 17 disposals or fewer in three of his last five games. The Saints could use his dynamic influence against Richmond, which was fourth going into round 16.
PREDICTION: Richmond by eight points

With gws clicking another draw, this is an 8 pt game
Yep, a massive opportunity tonight. Win and we'll be just a game off top; lose and we'll be back in the pack.
We've got to watch Billings who has been in great form over the past 5-6 weeks.
-
Poor start :P.
0 - 7
-
Can we make any more dumb mistakes?
-
Lloyd long to the square. Grigg tries to kick it off the ground but he's too tight against the line and it's a point.
1 - 7
-
Wakey wakey Richmond.
-
Come on Rance you are better than that
-
So what does Taylor Hunt bring to the team?
-
What's with the charge out of the middle and instead of kicking it deep we handball to no one which gifts the Saints an easy turnover. :huh.
Cotch now reported for a punch to the gut.
Deliberate out of bounds gives the Saints their 3rd.
Dumb dumb dumb :banghead
1 - 19
-
We are in big trouble peoples
-
Wtf is going on?
We got melbournes disease? Drinking our own bath water this week? stuff me this is horrible. Fumbling everything - 2 undisciplined 50's.
-
This is soft. We simply haven't mentally turned up. Seems too many Tigers were reading the flag talk in the papers :banghead.
-
Wow that was a late call ump
-
Inside 50s: 1 - 8 :help
-
This is going great to be ugly,
We can't hit a handball. Worse football of the year right here
-
And that's why Hunt shouldn't be in the team. Soft in 50/50 loose footy.
Mind you he hasn't been alone. There's been plenty of soft static panic handball to no one :banghead.
-
What the hell was that Caddy?
-
That was a clear throw and he paid it in the back
-
Drop Prestia for miles.Geez
-
Absolute crap Richmond
-
is this for real lol
-
Why did we just kick it to Stengel vs tall opponent twice in a row?
Dumb
-
Rance is having a Barry Crocker, just spoiled Ellis, gave away 50.
-
Inside 50s: 2 - 14 :help
5 Tigers haven't touched the footy.
That kick-in straight to a Saint about 30m from a Tiger sums us up :scream
-
Almost stuffed that goal chance too.
Cotch goals :gotigers
Rich 7
St K 21
-
Goal cotch, that was good transition footy although we did our best to stuff it up at the end.
Cotch reported for shot to the guts, surely won't go for that?
-
lol pick six
-
Short long and Prestia judges the ball better and marks. Misses.
8 - 21
-
Very disappointing Prestia
Very disappointing
-
Actually a good centering kick by Caddy finds Titch 40m out. Sprays it OOTF :banghead.
-
She'd wards off after lovely pass from caddy
Senior player lol
-
LOL Edwards has a seizure and misses the lot
-
Ellis misses on the run from 35m out :scream.
9 - 21
-
Great chase menadue
-
Watch the hips :banghead. Our attempted tackling tonight :banghead
-
We are mentally off. Completely off. Havent turned up.
-
can't compete on the kickout too many talls against midgets
-
Their talks are killing us, making us kick it long and they are marking it all
-
We miss two shots in a row and they make us pay at the other end.
9 - 27
Can someone force a contest for the down the line kick?
-
Great contested mark from Ellis but the backwards kick allowed the saints to set up. Man why are we playing like it is 2016?
-
This happens all the time. Nearly every game. Expect to come out a different side either 2nd or 3rd quarter. That's why we aren't contenders. Simply can't play 4 quarters
-
Talk talk talk :banghead.
No way should have Georgie been caught there.
-
slightly embarrassing now
-
They look hungry
We don't.
Wake up idiots
-
Martin long. Titch and a Saint defender miss it and Caddy marks behind them. Misses everything too :banghead.
-
Worst q of footy for the year.
-
Prestia
Caddy
Edwards
Ellis all missed very gettable goals, two of them were ootf!!!! stuffing pathetic!!!!!
-
lethargic and indifferent quarter. Wonder if we are gonna front up at any stage or let this pretty ordinary mob waddle over the top of us
-
Is conversion our biggest problem this year
-
10+ goal loss coming up if we keep this up
-
Disgraceful quarter Tigers. Didn't turn up to play >:(.
Quarter time
Richmond 1.3-9
St Kilda 5.3-33
Goal: Cotchin.
-
Terrible quarter. Prestia needs to go back to the VFL and how does Ellis constantly gets voted as one of the best players :thumbsdown
-
Been reading our own media, very lazy and very poor execution. On TV it's hard to see but it appears the Saints are running a hell of a lot harder than we are.
-
Whenever we're talked up we fail. We cannot handle expectation.
-
stuffing disgraceful from the Tigers. We could be 10 goals down ala port in EF. I hope they get their poo together because they owe it to their members and supporters to actually deliver the goods after talking the talk all week
-
10+ goal loss coming up if we keep this up
[/quote
Yep. Nailed it.]
-
Did they just announce at the ground that cotch has been reported?
-
The positive is we are only 24 points down and 3 quarters to play .
-
Yes for a soft punch to the guts
I think we've laid about 8 tackles that qtr
-
Yes cotch reported. Reckon he'll get a week
-
Huge 2nd quarter coming up...mids need to lift and we need to move the ball fast, and kick bloody straight :banghead
-
Forget it, saints have got the bit between the teeth, i don't think we can match them, they are murdering us in the air, in foot speed, everything
And another one
-
Jack injured? Went one arm for that mark.
Could be game over already. 5 goals down :help.
-
Game over
-
Look at the saints players getting stuck into us and laughing at us
-
Honestly stuff this poo. How can we dish this up.
-
Make that 6 down :banghead.
-
That's it. The end. We're done.
-
This is embarrassing
-
7 goals down against an effing minnow.
-
Omg
Saints players have time to drop marks and still stroll in
-
We refuse to go Fwds, back to sideways chipping
-
That was soft as :banghead.
Ballwatching Koby Stevens as he first fumbled then had the footy for about 15 secs before kicking the goal :banghead.
-
I think this is going to be 100+
-
So glad we've learnt from all our other losses. And our finals losses are burning in the players bellies.
-
Game over :banghead
Heads need to roll
-
HARDWICK NO CHANGES. LIKE A DEER IN THE HEADLIGHTS
-
Jack misses from 45m.
10 - 58
-
Heads to roll.
-
Why are we allowing that quick handball every single time??
Our marking is deplorable, lazy stuff
-
They are punishing us every time we don't hold onto possession. Jack drops the speckie and they run it up the other end for another goal. Flogged all over the park.
-
Why are we allowing that quick handball every single time??
Our marking is deplorable, lazy stuff
Spot on. We didn't mentally turn up to play and there's no 'on' switch :help
-
I thought Dimma said we wouldn't lose games by 10 goals?
-
LOL Hunt. Stevens must think how good is this.
-
I'm just glad that we rewards good reserves form because Taylor Hunt has been awesome
-
We're making slow duds like koby Stevens look like millionaires
-
Tell me that out on the full, a kick to 2 on 1 for a start wasn't on stuffing purpose. These pricks have chucked it in...no stuffing heart at all
-
We could have a % less than 100 after tonight. Would drop us down to 8th with the Swans on our tail :P.
-
Embarrassing!
This is U10s stuff :facepalm.
-
Nothing new when we have chance to consolidate our position we go to water and fall on our knees typical Richmond.Mentally weake nothing has changed.
-
We could have a % less than 100 after tonight. Would drop us down to 8th with the Swans on our tail :P.
Port and WC play each other
-
Lingy is absolutely right. This is disgraceful >:(.
-
We could have a % less than 100 after tonight. Would drop us down to 8th with the Swans on our tail :P.
Port and WC play each other
Cheers Damo. Forgot that.
-
75 points and it's not even halftime
Omfg
-
Hold your head in shame our senior players and coaching panel pretenders.
-
Their confidence is sky high now they can't do anything wrong.
Our % is down to 104.9. Saints have caught up by 14% (us down 7%; them up 7%) and there's still over two quarter to go :help

Not like this
-
Just a reminder that nothing has changed at tiger land
-
Let it be known this is what happens when you pick Taylor Hunt
-
That sums us up tonight. Jack handball over the top misses Butler and favours the Saints defender. Butler still gets it but them chips to another Saint defender between two Tigers :facepalm.
Clearances: 8 - 20
Contested footy: down by 30.
Mids have been totally uncompetitive :banghead.

Great! Now Grimes is whacked by an elbow from Membrey >:(.
-
Members put his elbow through grimes face and barely a whimper from our boys. They just don't give a poo

Great kick, Titch :P

Cmon man. Who wants to accept mediocrity? Not me
-
If only there was someone in the VFL knocking the door down who excels at winning the contested ball and clearances.......
-
Wow!! how pathetic...not one winner on the park. They are all over us in every way. Disgusting performance by all :banghead
-
Weak as pee this club. We can kiss Dusty goodbye after this pooful performance also

There are a couple. Even a few.

What captain we have leads by example goes missing in action.A performance like this somes up Richmond football club.

Waiting for the sack Hardwick thread
-
This is what happens when a club has to much focus on corporate PC culture and PR articles.

This is why we need Naish Jnr
-
How is Hunt getting a game over miles. Bullcrap selection.
This is a disgrace. Season defining half coming up
-
Reckon if the Saints kick the first one after half time then it would almost put the game beyond doubt.
-
Martin has runs on the board. He can't win 10 AFLCA votes every week. On the days he has has the off day as he is only human we need other players to stand up. That has been absolutely absent in Prestia, Caddy, Edwards, Ellis and all our other senior players
-

One way to have fun with this game
-
Why would you play our best player forward when we have 30 less inside 50s. Works fine when we can get the ball down there but otherwise a waste.

That disappointed me just as much as the whole first half - thats not how good sides get around one of their own
-

I won't have too much of a dig in Stengle as it is his 2nd game and similar with all the under 50 gamers but boy oh boy this is shocking. To be leapfrogged because of the percentage is nothing short of disgraceful
-
Grimes on the bench and has a massive shiner on his left cheek. Let's hope there isn't a crack :pray.
-
Unfortunately that's what happens when you drink your own bath water.
Was apparent on here as well with the people pumping up the Hunt selection.
-
Jack from 55 goes across and is rushed into the point post. Throw-in. Caddy found space but snaps a point from 15m out :P.
11 - 92
-
We don't lose by 10 goals. We lose by 20 goals
-
That could be the sealer.
-
Oh goody. More unaccountable footy. A Saint all by himself in their forward 50 gifts them another goal.
They've scored 10.3-63 on our turnovers :help.
-
Grimes on the bench and has a massive shiner on his left cheek. Let's hope there isn't a crack :pray.

Finally nailed a tackle that caused a turnover. Butler to Jack to Grigg 35m out. Misses another set shot ::).

Grimes on the bench and has a massive shiner on his left cheek. Let's hope there isn't a crack :pray.

We'll Grimes is done for the night due to concussion.
-
We've got both Cotch and Dusty on the bench :huh3.

Stengle needed to give off there.
Caddy misses another snap.
19 - 104

Let's see who stands up and shows a bit

We've got both Cotch and Dusty on the bench :huh3.
Good and they can eff off to another team.

George. 30m out. MISSES!!!!
-
Poor kick by a Saints player and Caddy finds Georgie for another set shot 30m out directly in front. Sprays it off one step :facepalm.
That miss was all poor technique. He kicked it to where he was running too (which was the right behind side)
26 - 104
-
Just rubbing it in when a thug goes on to have a night out. Someone smash the dirty idiot
-
And of course the Saints don't miss any of their set shots tonight to make Georgie pay for his bad miss.
26 - 110
-
I have to say dusty has fumbled the ball more in one game tonight then the rest of the season combined.
-
Lambert has been good tonight, probably the only player who can hold their head up high
-
Lambert out of the middle and Stengle receives the free 30m out. ANother set shot miss by us tonight ::)
27 - 110
-
Lambert has been good tonight, probably the only player who can hold their head up high
Agree, TM.
-
Nice to see Prestia softie it
-
They've wanted it more all night. We've been soft as butter and made every mistake in the book.
-
Prestia is hopeless, needs to be dropped
-
The ground ball gets have been woeful.
-
Macca and short banging into each other which turns it over for another one
Sums up our night
-
Insert Benny Hill music.
Hunt pushed off the ball too easily in the defensive pocket and then we all run towards the Saint winning the ball like bees to the honeypot leaving their goalsquare wide open for another easy Saint goal :facepalm.
27 - 116
-
Guys simple as that didn't turn up to play wither we took them lightly or hype got to us.One thing we know nothing has changed club is still crumbles under pressure.
-
95 points.

Richo and Lingy getting stuck into Prestia for a poor defensive effort allowing Nick Riewoldt to waltz forward for the last Saints' goal.

Prestia, Edwards, Rioli, Ellis,, Lloyd. A few names of players who should have at least a week in the VFL. These players have been passengers for the last few weeks, if Hardwick has any credibility after today then he has to make these changes.

I think Astbury and Rance have been ok. Rance has kept Riewoldt honest. The poor midfield pressure has meant a constant barrage of inside 50s and even if we had Harry Taylor, Enright, Scarlett, Talia, Lever to help our Rance and Astbury we would still be 10 goals down
-
Prestia, Edwards, Rioli, Ellis,, Lloyd. A few names of players who should have at least a week in the VFL. These players have been passengers for the last few weeks, if Hardwick has any credibility after today then he has to make these changes.
The problem is as ineffective on the game as Ellis has been, he is in our top 3 possession getters tonight. So Dimma and the match committee won't drop him.
Lloyd only in the side because we have no 2nd tall forward to force him out :-\.
-
so now we get 16 minutes of flooding

The problem with the flea fleet is none of them can legitimately rotate through the midfield. When the ball isn't in our half we are completely outnumbered in the contest

Shows what happens when you get ahead of yourselves. It shows that wins don't come easy for us and if we don't work hard enough we won't win. More passengers that a cruise liner tonight.
Special mention to Prestia tonight, I really don't think he tried and that's just not good enough, needs to be dropped. Whether they say it's for management reasons I don't care but he needs to go and get Miles in there.

While team was putrid, finding it hard to single anyone out. Sure Prestia was, but so were plenty of others. I though Cotchin and a couple others tried hard but didn't amount to anything. I can't think of anything to take from that game other than this is the worst season to be off your game and it was just the loss the trolls were sweating on.
-
For mine
Lambert was our best and tried his guts out all night
Astbury and Grigg were good
Costanza, menadue and caddy tried hard and did ok.
The rest big fail. 6 out of 22 that can walk off knowing they didn't leave anything out there.
Special mention to grimes not his fault he got taken out by a cheap shot

What the hell is his pre goalkicking routine, obviously doesn't work but what are our coaches teaching these kids, stop twirling the friggin thing around and focus on the ball drop. Also this arm loosening thing he does i really don't get either. Said it before but just cant understand how a player can play junior football, make it through over hundreds of other kids to the top level and cant kick a ball straight over 30 metres, mindblowingly bad. :banghead

Loosening up the arms takes away tension in a similar way a golfer uses this method. Doesn't work for George though.
-
Sure it fell apart tonight and there were times we looked like the 18th place team . It was an absolute stinker.
I remember a similar game at edihad against North back in 2013 - where they kicked 8 unanswered goals in the second.
The body of work so far in 2017 would suggest this is an aberration . I would wait to see how they respond before the call to abandon ship is made .

Shocking contest tonight. All jokes aside, no Richmond fan would have been entertained for a single second tonight. As a RFC member I had to pay full price for a ticket for the family and $30 for parking. Absolute robbery tonight, disgusting performance.
4th place or not, performances like tonight, performances like Adelaide and choking losses against GWS, Freo and giving up the lead to Sydney is just simply unacceptable. I don't care about the excuses of youth or the glaring holes we have on our list. Members and supporters were peeed on tonight.

Maybe I missed the supposed tweet but all I can see is this:
"If a top 4 side concedes 32 in. 50's in 45mins of play it means you've got ahead of yourself. No other explanation #AFLSaintsTigers"
I'd say that's fairly spot on?

Just saw the Grimes hit by Membery. He'll cop weeks, similar to Greene incident who got 2.

He set us up for full scale sodomy in the first quarter.
Will NEVER put his body on the line or take a bump.
Will make it look like its the ball's fault, just like Houli but gives nothing.
Why in the stuff I ks this piece if skata getting a game?
His selection every week only compounds the stupididity and cluelessness exhibited when they chose him for 800k.

Another smart arse comment directed at me
Adelaide - Lost at home to Melbourne by 41 and were disgraceful
Geelong - Didn't turn up again Collingwood and got beat easily
StK - Lost by 40, 50 and 57
Port - Lost by 70 to Essendon
WC - Lost by 50 to Hawthorn and 61 to Essendon
GWS has had off days but nothing like ours obviously.
I'm not excusing last night, I just think it all went over the top on here last night.
It might be a loss we needed to shrink the heads again and regardless of that, there isn't one side in the comp that hasn't had poo days

Nup. Not coppin this.
Name any of those sides who were 95 points down during a game with such statistical deficiency in the first half (e.g. I50's, clearances and only 1 goal). Our first half of footy (and third quater for that matter) was far far worse than those you mentioned.
And the only reason it didnt end up a 20 goal loss was StKilda took the foot off the throat.
You should own your comment from last night. You said it, not anyone else. And it was way off the mark.

He does I agree, but for mine theres a lot to work with there so would certainly persevere. It cant be that hard to teach him the right technique so that his set shots can be more consistent, its either straight through the middle or ootf

Is it easier to teach George to kick straight or teach Rioli to get a kick??
Im so sick of playing 3, 4, 5 players short every week with excuses for each and everyone of them.
We should be in awe of our leaders for the job they do to win games with so many players around them that just don't contribute.
This club needs to make an example of a few players.

Membrey copped just two weeks for his elbow to Grimes' face.
Tim Membrey, St Kilda, has been charged with striking Dylan Grimes, Richmond, during the second quarter of the Round 16 match between St Kilda and Richmond, played at Etihad Stadium on Saturday July 8, 2017.
In summary, he can accept a two-match sanction with an early plea.
Based on the available video evidence and a medical report from the Richmond Football Club, the incident was assessed as careless conduct with high impact to the head. The incident was classified as a three-match sanction. The player has no applicable record which impacts the penalty. An early plea enables the player to accept a two-match sanction.

Tigers dig a first-half hole
The Tigers' debacle against the Saints saw them record the biggest half-time deficit since St Kilda led a fledgling Greater Western Sydney side by 93 points at half-time in round 22, 2012.
The 82-point deficit was Richmond's biggest at half-time since round six, 2007 when the Cats tore the hapless Tigers apart to lead by 107 points at the long break. Richmond also trailed Adelaide by 84 points at Football Park in round 17, 1997.
Only two of the 20 teams to have faced half-time deficits larger than Richmond's went on to make the finals.
Melbourne made a preliminary final in 1998 after trailing Geelong by 84 points at half time in round 12 that season. North Melbourne made a semi-final in 1985 after trailing eventual premier Essendon at the long break by 100 points at Windy Hill.
