VFL Tigers claim victory in Beaconsfield

Richmond VFL 11.10-76 def Casey 7.6-48
The VFL Tigers recorded their fourth consecutive win on Saturday, defeating Casey to the tune of 28 points at Beaconsfield’s Holm Park Recreation Reserve.
The VFL Tigers were good value in the opening half, establishing a commanding 40-point lead at the main break before adverse weather conditions stifled both teams as they attempted to hit the scoreboard.
Richmond VFL then held strong in a competitive third term, before a handful of late Casey goals managed to reduce the deficit in the shadows of the final siren.
Key defenders Jake Batchelor and Nathan Broad were in particularly fine form, combining for 47 disposals and 13 marks in a dominant display at the back, while Jacob Townsend was the pick of the midfield bunch, gathering 34 disposals while also amassing eleven clearances, eleven tackles and a goal.
Returning talls Todd Elton and Callum Moore contributed well with two goals apiece, while second-gamer Danko Bzenic led the way with three majors of his own.
Richmond VFL and development coach Craig McRae was impressed by his side’s ability to match the Demons in the middle of the ground and apply themselves to the contest.
“Over the last five weeks Casey have been number one in the competition for contested ball, clearances and tackles, so we knew we were in for a great contest” McRae said.
“I think we not only matched them in those areas, but for three-and-a-half quarters we actually led them in all those areas.
“I’m proud of the boys. It was a good performance.”
Returning to their home-away-from-home for the first time since their narrow loss to Werribee in Round 7, the VFL Tigers looked to establish the ascendancy early, but were plagued by inaccuracy.
Bzenic, Moore and Shai Bolton all came close with early efforts, however, none were able to register the first goal as Casey held firm.
It took until midway through the first term for the game’s first major, with Moore reaping the benefits of his own contest work, scooping up a loose ball and running into an open goal square.
It took until the first quarter siren for the next to fall, a calm Corey Ellis set-shot providing a steadier for the Tigers, who took a 16-point lead into the first break.
Having dominated inside-50s and looking impenetrable at the back thanks to Batchelor, Broad, Hugh Beasley and the returning Nick Vlastuin, all that was required was some straight kicking, and the VFL Tigers would be away.
And that was exactly what was provided in the form of the ever-confident Bzenic, who conjured a brilliant snap and some clever crumbing work to mirror the efforts of his two-goal debut last week.
Elton and Thomas Silvestro followed Bzenic’s lead, nailing their first goals for the day in quick succession, before Bolton had the crowd on their feet with a cheeky piece of hand-candy and a silky finish to follow.
With a 40-point lead secured at half-time, the heavens opened up over Beaconsfield, setting up the third quarter as an old-fashioned wet weather shootout.
A determined Casey slotted the first of the quarter and were making life difficult for the VFL Tiger’s clinical forward line, until Moore marked and goaded to stem the pressure.
The Demons managed to peg one more back before Moore turned provider for Todd Elton, who booted his second goal in his return from a shoulder injury, sustained in the VFL Tigers most recent trip to Beaconsfield.
Townsend was beginning to come into his own, gathering 26 disposals to three-quarter time, with his efforts greatly assisted by the ruck work of Ivan Soldo, his eventual 41 hitouts proving him a worthy adversary to Demons big man Jake Spencer.
While the final stanza saw the Demons edge closer, the day would ultimately belong to the VFL Tigers, who now improve their record to seven wins and five losses for the year.
Ellis came home with the wind in his sails, making his way to 24 disposals to accompany his first quarter goal, while Jack Graham (22 disposals) also kept busy.
With another four points in the bag, the VFL Tigers look to next week’s clash with Werribee, to be played at Frankston Oval on Saturday.
The match will commence at 2pm.

Jacob Townsend and Jacob Ballard show the way as Richmond sees off Casey
Paul Amy,
Cranbourne Leader
10 July 2017
IT’S a long way from Punt Rd to Holm Park but Richmond made itself right at home in the rural setting at the Beaconsfield ground.
Up against the Demons from the neighbouring City of Casey, the VFL Tigers, led by Jacob Townsend and Jacob Ballard, dominated the first half and went on to a 28-point victory on Saturday.
It was Richmond’s second foray this year into Cardinia Shire, with whom it established a relationship to connect with its large supporter base in the region.
In the first match the Tigers lost narrowly to Werribee and their season was wobbling at 3-5.
Now they’re 7-5 and on course for a finals appearance under the coaching of former Brisbane premiership star Craig McRae.
The Tigers were quick to take the ascendancy and should have led by more than 16 points at quarter time.
No matter. They straightened up to kick 5.1 to 1.1 in the second term and had a substantial lead for the second half.
As rain arrived, the Demons lifted, but not enough to threaten the Tigers.
Richmond’s defence — Nathan Broad, Hugh Beasley, Maboir Chol, Jake Batchelor, Nick Vlaustin and Anthony Scott — was as unshifting as Ayers Rock.
McRae thought former Brisbane man Beasley had his best performance for the Tigers. Ditto for James Fletcher, from VAFA club Peninsula Old Boys. He had 25 disposals on a wing.
“I’ve held good hope for him for a long time and he probably hasn’t delivered on the promise,’’ McRae said of left-footer Fletcher. “Today was clearly his best game he’s played for us.’’
Townsend and JJ Liston Trophy hope Ballard had 62 possessions behind them and bubbly Danko Bzenic, in his first year on Richmond’s VFL list and recruited from the Essendon District league, kicked three goals, a significant contribution in the testing conditions.
Demons Corey Maynard and Sam Weideman.
The Demons had fine players in experienced pair Ben Kennedy and Jack Trengove, with both collecting more than 30 possessions to remind the Melbourne selectors of their worth.
Defender James Munro, all desperation and desire, applied 17 tackles, forward Bayley Fritsch did his things with a signature of class, and Mitch Gent (20 disposals) more than held his own through the middle and wings.
But Casey had too few doing too little in the defining period of the match and its taller types had no real influence.
Demons coach Justin Plapp said his team was “terrible’’ in the first half but he was pleased it rallied to win the second.
“I believe we won the second half convincingly and wasted opportunities too,’’ he said.
“I still we think we should have been closer. I don’t think we should have won the game but I think we should have been closer.
“Our players had a sniff, there’s no doubt …. some of our players actually started cracking in. I thought Mykelti Lefau in the last quarter was big, Bayley Fritsch’s second half was huge, (Dion) Johnstone, Munro. We had a lot of winners in the second half but we didn’t have enough in the first half.’’
WHAT THE COACHES SAID
Craig McRae (Richmond)[/b]
“They (Casey) were No 1 in the comp in the last five weeks for contested ball, clearance and tackles so we knew that we were in for a really good contest. I’m really proud of the boys. I reckon we not only matched them but for most of the game, other than the last quarter, we headed them in all those areas. We’ve been really proud of our defence, particularly in the last six weeks. Teams are struggling to score against us, as indicative again today.’’
Justin Plapp (Casey Demons)
“Richmond are well coached. They’re a smooth-operating team. They score really quickly — No 1 for offence scoring — and we didn’t take that away from them in the second quarter. But we certainly got the game back on our terms. I’m disappointed, make no mistake about it, but with where our club is at the moment — we’ve got some challenges going on, above (Melbourne) and within our own club — I think it was a respectable loss…’’

AFL LISTED PLAYERS
Jacob Townsend
34 disposals, 11 clearances, 11 tackles, one goal.
One of our best. Stepped up with Miles out of the team, providing lots of clearances and tackles. Was able to have an influence on the game.
Nathan Broad
27 disposals, eight marks, five rebound-50s, one tackle.
In career best form. Took some great intercept marks, and gave us some fantastic rebound. Really strong in the contest.
Corey Ellis
24 disposals, six tackles, three marks, one goal.
Kicked a very important goal on the quarter time siren to give us some momentum, and was a steady contributor throughout the day.
Jack Graham
22 disposals, six tackles, six clearances, one mark.
Jack’s contested work was outstanding. Continues to give great spread from the contest.
Todd Elton
21 disposals, eight marks, six inside-50s, two goals.
Gave us a great presence. Took some strong marks and looked lively.
Jake Batchelor
20 disposals, five marks, six rebound-50s, one tackle.
A lynchpin down back. Wasn’t alone, but was a real wall down there.
Oleg Markov
18 disposals, four tackles, three marks, one clearance.
Oleg’s first half was outstanding, and he was very influential. Faded a little bit in the second half.
Nick Vlastuin
15 disposals, five tackles, two marks, two rebound-50s.
Strong again in the contest, and laid some bone-crunching tackles.
Shai Bolton
14 disposals, four tackles, three marks, one goal.
Was very lively early. Created some goals with his agility and strong pressure.
Mabior Chol
14 disposals, five marks, three tackles, one rebound-50.
Provided plenty of aerial contest and some good contested marks.
Callum Moore
12 disposals, seven marks, three tackles, two goals.
Another of the talls that came back for us this week. He was marking everything in the air, and his agility and speed on ground level was hard to match up on.
Ivan Soldo
12 disposals, 41 hitouts, six tackles, one mark.
Battled in the ruck all day and provided a great presence.
Ryan Garthwaite
Seven disposals, three tackles, three inside-50s, two marks.
A bit quiet, but had a big run-down tackle and always does the team things.
