After the Essendon game, I wouldn't underestimate Brisbane, they have nothing to lose for the season and will go all out to give us a blood nose.

Match preview: Richmond v Brisbane Lions
afl.com.au
12 July 2017
SUMMARY
How Richmond responds to a shock 67-point loss to St Kilda will determine whether the result was an aberration or the start of a worrying run of form. The Tigers fell 82 points behind in the opening half and let worrying trends creep into their game, with their pressure and structure, that coach Damien Hardwick will want to eradicate in Sunday's clash against the Brisbane Lions. Chris Fagan's team, meanwhile, suffered its biggest loss of the season just six days after its best win under the new coach. The young team was bullied by Geelong, but Dayne Zorko put in one of the performances of the season with 36 possessions and four goals. Whether he can be more effective than Dustin Martin will be one the key elements of this game.
WHERE AND WHEN: Etihad Stadium, Sunday, July 16, 1.10pm AEST
LAST FIVE TIMES
R4, 2017, Richmond 17.17 (119) d Brisbane Lions 10.7 (67) at the Gabba
R14, 2016, Richmond 17.15 (117) d Brisbane Lions 11.9 (75) at the MCG
R3, 2015, Richmond 21.11 (137) d Brisbane Lions 8.10 (58) at the Gabba
R16, 2014, Richmond 12.7 (79) d Brisbane Lions 7.12 (54) at the MCG
R5, 2014, Richmond 15.16 (106) d Brisbane Lions 9.9 (63) at the Gabba
THE SIX POINTS
1. Richmond had its round four clash against the Lions wrapped up by half-time, leading by 42 points. The Lions had more disposals, laid more tackles and won the clearances. Jack Riewoldt and Jason Castagna kicked four goals each.
2. The Tigers conceded 100 points in a game for only the second time this season in their clash against St Kilda in round 16. The Lions have conceded 100 points or more in 12 games.
3. Richmond has dominated the Lions over a long period, winning the past 10 matches, and 14 of the past 16. The Lions last won in round seven, 2009, by 26 points at the MCG.
4. The Lions have struggled to mark the ball inside 50 this season and rank last, averaging only 7.6 a game. The Tigers have been impressive and rank second with an average of 14.1.
5. Not in Richmond’s favour is its accuracy in front of goal this season. The Tigers rank No.17 with an accuracy of 43.6 per cent. The Lions rank equal fifth at 50.3 per cent.
6. Richmond defender Brandon Ellis has been climbing the rankings in the Schick Player Ratings since round nine and is now ranked No.191 overall. He started the year ranked No.263 overall and is his club's No.9 ranked player.
IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR … Dion Prestia.
The Richmond midfielder arrived from Gold Coast as a prized recruit but hasn't yet matched his best form from six years with the Suns. His average disposals, clearances, inside 50s and contested possessions are all at five-year lows, and his tackle numbers are at a career low 3.54 a game. Richmond needs him to have a bigger influence on games. If he can do that in the run to the finals, he will improve the team significantly.
PREDICTION: Richmond by 36 points

#wedontwinby10goals
-
In light of Halstep's infamous statement, a 10 goal loss and a 10 goal win in consecutive weeks would be mildly amusing....
-
PREDICTION: Richmond by 36 points
all from set shots directly in front 10 metres out
-
Being an early Sunday game and on the back of last week's flogging :P, crowd predictions must be soft for Sunday. The Club was offering free GA tickets this week.

Be good to have a good win and really boost up the percentage.
.....but we won't be winning by 10 goals. :rollin
-
With Sydney winning and Melbourne losing, we need to respond today after last week's debacle to stay in touch with the top 4. A win would put us only a game behind GWS who we play next week.
-

and in importantly put some space between us, saints and Dees
If we're serious we're going to need to beat GWS and the cats to go into this years finals series with some serious belief we can beat anyone. Getting almost over the line but not quite isnt the same - the doubts and demons are still there after our close losses earlier this season. We need a couple of big scalps before finals

After the Essendon game, I wouldn't underestimate Brisbane, they have nothing to lose for the season and will go all out to give us a blood nose.
After our effort last week, Brisbane could just rock up and take the game. I hope now we are at the business end we don't choke it up
-
Really excited re Broad.
-
Shocking turnover Edwards. And then Presta :facepalm
-
Goal to Riewoldt -
RICHMOND 12
BRIS 6
-
A goal a piece (Georgie). After we got the first quickly, Brisbane were able to keep it in their forward line for 2 minutes and then score.
Edwards 45m out. But passes it :facepalm to Caddy short of 15m required and it's play on and the chance goes begging :banghead.
We get it back thanks to a Lion dropping a sitter and Titch gives it to Jack who runs into an open goal :gotigers.
Rich 12
Bris 6
Edit: Beat me to it, Dooks :thumbsup.
-
Another Brisbane turnover and end up with Jack having another shot. But he hits the post :scream.
13 - 6
-
Jack hit the post from 10m out :-[
-
Disposals: 38 - 10 after 10 mins yet we lead by just a kick.
-
Grigg to Prestia but his shot on the run goes across the face.
14 - 6
-
Richmond are dominating the early stages; leading the uncontested possession count (29-6), clearances (6-1) and inside 50's (6-2).
http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2017/17/rich-v-bl
Yet if that Lion shot at goal had gone through it would be virtually level. Thankfully he missed.
14 - 7
-
Disposals: 38 - 10 after 10 mins yet we lead by just a kick.
And killing the clearances too. Poor kicking by us helping Brisbane
-
Disposals: 38 - 10 after 10 mins yet we lead by just a kick.
And killing the clearances too. Poor kicking by us helping Brisbane
Yep. Our pathetic goalkicking on display once again :banghead.
-
Jeez we are turning it over....
-
Free kicks 5-0 to Brisbane :help
-
Titch out of defence to Grigg to Ellis who kicks to Rioli on the wing. Goes long. Loose ball. Georgie gathers tight in the pocket but rushes it and misses.
15 - 7
-
Free kicks 6-0 :facepalm
-
Butler goals
21-8 :gotigers
-
Castagna kicks into man on mark :wallywink
-
5min left in forst quarter still no free kick to Richmond
-
Titch clearance to Nank to Lambert who ran hard and finds Georgie 25m out 45 degree angle. Kicks into the man on the mark :facepalm.
Seriously, our goalkicking is a joke :banghead.
We get it back but Dusty snap is saved by a Lion defender.
We get it back again via McIntosh. 55m out. Misses.
Rich 3.4-22
Bris 1.2-8
-
Finally a free kick!
-
Geez, it's a poor standard game. We're stuffing it up inside F50 while the Lions are turning it over trying to get it past centre.
-
:banghead
Castagna kicks into man on mark :wallywink
this kid has the McGuanes about him :banghead
-
The Tigers now lead the clearances by 8 and have won all 3 centre clearances. However, they have been inefficient from this source converting just 25 per cent of shots from this source.
Richmond lead the time in forward half by 13 per cent so far, creating 13 forward half chains and generating 3.3.21 from this zone.
http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2017/17/rich-v-bl
And there's another goal chance stuff up with an airy :banghead
-
Shocking football Richmond
-
Edwards goal
28 to 9
-
We're lucky we're playing the Lions. It's dumb and dumber out there :facepalm.
Was that deboy reviewing an obvious touched ball? ::)
Finally we get a goal through Titch.
Rich 4.4-28
Bris 1.3-9
-
Another bad turnover by Brisbane but again we can't do anything constructive with it. Siren.
Quarter time
Richmond 4.4-28
Brisbane 1.3-9
Goals: Riewoldt, Castagna, Edwards, Butler.
-
Really poor footy and turnover after turnovers.
Scoreline is VERY flattering.
-
Flattering to Brisbane. ...should be six goals up.
-
We should be 7 goals up but only because Brisbane are shocking. If we were playing a decent side we'd be 4 goals down because they would punish our missed shots and stuff ups inside F50.
We're well on top in all the stats bar free kicks.
Leading disposals:
Lambert 10
Grigg 9
Ellis 9
Edwards 9
Cotch 8
Prestia 8
Dusty 7
Rioli 6
Nank 6
Jack 6
Short 5
http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2017/17/rich-v-bl
-
Richmond has the "prestias" at the moment.
-
Jeez Caddy has been bloody quiet. Invisible.
Might be time for a spell in the twos if this continues
-
Robertson slips over in defence and it's HTB lol. Butler 45m out. Doesn't make the distance and it's rushed :scream.
29 - 9
-
Seriously, our kicking is a joke :banghead.
Fixed
-
How can AFL footballers not be able to kick 45m? :huh
-
They've got a goalkicking disease as well.
29 - 10
Good transition by us and Jack marks 40m out. Yeah we actually put a set shot through the middle. :gotigers
Rich 35
Bris 10
-
Harris Andrews and Daniel McStay have been pivotal in restricting Richmond going forward. They have combined for 10 intercepts as well as 5 intercept marks and 4 spoils.
http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2017/17/rich-v-bl
-
Caddy flat footed and just spectating around the contests. In the wrong positions. We are one man down with him out there atm
-
Caddy not ready for the recieve. Turnover.
Brisbane goal.
-
Astbury intercept pack mark. Goes long and Jack marks just inside 50 on a 45 degree angle. Misses.
Keeping them in it with our goalkicking again :banghead.
36 - 16
-
Commentators rightly mocking the horrible standard of the game.
And we deserve this. Dishing up pure crap and brisbane with another goal :banghead.
36 - 22
-
Back to unwatchable footy :banghead
-
:chuck :chuck :chuck :chuck
-
Absolute tripe
-
Lions intercept our slop and get another :banghead.
36 - 28
Pathetic Richmond!
-
JEEZUS Geez :banghead :banghead :banghead
-
Miles to Nank to Dusty who goes long. Titch gathers and misses another one ::).
37 - 28
-
Richmondy....
-
ABC radio saying Cotch came into the game sore and that's why he's playing more forward today.
-
Our second qtrs: Won 4; Lost 11.
-
Rioli is unwatchable at the minute but he is only 20 so it's ok according to some.
-
Lambert 1-2 with Short and finds Macca. Goes to Butler who drops the mark and gets caught HTB. Sums us up at the minute.
-
This is appauling footy.
-
Rioli is unwatchable at the minute but he is only 20 so it's ok according to some.
The whole team is unwatchable at the minute. Dishing up absolute sub-standard slop.
-
Like I said...... Season over.
This is Dinmers Richomnd guys.
-
Like I said...... Season over.
This is Dinmers Richomnd guys.
"il take it from here mate"
-
The Lions efficiency has allowed them to cut the lead to 9 points. They have had just 5 inside 50's, but their kicking efficiency is 10 per cent higher and subsequently, they have launched 3 goals for the quarter.
http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2017/17/rich-v-bl
So our efficiency is 10% worse than the bottom side whose won just 3 games all year :facepalm.
37 - 30
-
Dusty to Astbury who goes long and it's off hands for another point.
38 - 30
-
We are playing like millionaires but unfortunately we aren't worth a pinch of poo.
Edwards, Jack, Butler are kidding themselves...
It's embarrassing!!
-
Half-time
Richmond 4.4 5.8-38
Brisbane 1.3 4.6-30
Goals: Riewoldt 2, Castagna, Butler, Edwards.
Start again, Tiges :help.
-
Despite winning the clearances by 8 and inside 50's by 9, the Tigers failed to capitalize in the first half. Primarily this was due to Brisbane's ability to create intercepts in their defensive half (30-18).
Alex Witherden is having a significant impact in his third game with a game-high 16 disposals, 278 metres gained as well as three inside 50's.
http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2017/17/rich-v-bl
-
Witherden a geelong falcon. Should get him via trade is most certainly a player
-
Wow that quarter was bloody poor.
Ridiculously poor. Shades of last week. :thumbsdown
So much for the #insaneconnection between the players and Cotch because most of them arent playing for him or the jumper.
-
So Rioli's second quarter consistered of a missed handball from 2 meters, a 10m kick to a player that was hot, a chance to grab the footy out of the air and get it going our way instead he preferred not to take body contact and just hits the ball forward to a Brisbane player, missed tackles, falling over and generally looks exhausted while not moving.
Even Dermie who loves the Riolis said he looks like he is running in quicksand.
But he is only 20...
-
Sometimes you wonder if any of these peanuts played junior footy? :banghead
Lasagna kicks into the man on mark from point blank - moronic & ridiculous! :banghead :banghead
How can't a dual Coleman medalist just go back & slot it from 30 metre on a 45 deg. - unbelievable! :banghead :banghead :banghead
Stupid dinky cutesy bullcrap around the ground - haven't seen one handball hit a target. Rioli is a liability at the minute as he's forgot the basic fundamentals of the game. :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead
Players running into one another :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead
Someone should put on Benny Hill music over the loud speakers. :banghead :banghead
I might phone the club and ask for a refund for the last two weeks. How do these bozos get to wear our jumper?! :rollin
-

dude we get your point and agree with it, now open your eyes and look at duds like edwards, caddy etc
They are just as bad, if not worse as they are experienced.
just goes to prove how bad we are when our top 3/4 dont perform.
edwards. LMAO what a lazy good for nothing footballer.
-
The whole team is playing crap. When we're handballing as much as we're kicking and our top possession getters are handballing 3-4 times more than kicking you know there's something majorly wrong. What happened to the team earlier in the year that was the No.1 long kicking side in the comp?
-
That first play of the 3rd qtr sums us up. Going wide, wide & wide.
We get it back and Titch marks 45m out on a 45 degree angle. And he misses. The story of our day :banghead.
39 - 30
-
Grimes running into an open goal and he misses too :scream.
40 - 30
We've kicked 2.7 since the 18 mins Q1.
-
Bitterly disappointing - after our start this was a game we should've looked at to improve percentage. Continually getting ahead of ourselves. That was appalling and we've now given Brisbane a sniff and belief they can win this.
Castagna wtf dude?! Learn to bury those shots or at the very least to miss slightly instead of diabolically
-

Dude we get you don't rate Edwards but Rioli makes Edwards look like Dangerfield
-
Lambert hands to Floss who passes to Jack 49m out on the boundary. Miss. At least you can excuse that being a tough shot compared to all the gimmes we've missed.
41 - 30
-
Dusty has been pathetic
Should lower the contract price hopefully
-
The Tigers have now taken 8 marks inside 50 to the Lions 4. But, they have been extremely poor from set shots, converting just one of their six shots.
http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2017/17/rich-v-bl
-
LOL we kick the hard one. Of course, it wasn't a set shot :whistle
Jack snaps one on the run from the boundary :gotigers.
Rich 6.11-47
Bris 4.6-30
-
Soldo leading our tackle count with 4. :clapping
Maybe some of the big heads could follow his lead.
This current group are a bloody disgrace to all previous teams that have ever played for our jumper!
Soft as butter the lot of them!
I can't stand watching when they play this pansy wearing soft limpwristed bullcrap, it makes me sick to the stomach.
-

really? Dont think u watched enough of his games then. Pretty sure i sure a goal to lions on the back of his lookaway andball.
They are both equally as poo now. Rioli has time to turn it around, edwards is and always will be a dud.
-
Richmond have had the ball in their forward half for 97 per cent of the time and have had 6 inside 50's. After locking the ball in, they have created their first goal from their 6th intercept in the midfield.
http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2017/17/rich-v-bl
-
Getting sick and tired of this crap being dished up....
-
Miles to Prestia who bounces. Kicks to Titch at 50 and he gets it over to Dusty. Misses :scream.
Make that 3.10 since the 18 min Q1.
48 - 31
-
6 goals 12. Amatuers.
-
Lion turnover. Throw-in. Lambert hands to Miles but he's run down.
Lions on the counter goal :banghead. Quarter even on the scoreboard after all our early dominance :banghead.
48 - 37
-
Cotch out of middle and Jack gets a free for a hold. 20m out and goals :gotigers. His 4th.
Rich 7.12-54
Bris 5.7-37
-
The Tigers lead the centre bounce clearances 8 to 1 in this game, but have been inefficient creating just 0.1.1 from this source.
http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2017/17/rich-v-bl
-
Rioli kept it alive pushing it forward. Butler does and goals :gotigers.
Rich 60
Bris 37
-
Prestia out of the middle and Georgie marks. Wobbler lands in the goalsquare and the Lions mark it.
Another chance goes begging to build up momentum and kick away :P.
-
Dustin Martin is having an extremely influential quarter with 11 disposals, 4 clearances and 4 score involvements. This has allowed Richmond to generate 2 goals to 1 from stoppages.
Since half time, Brisbane have been far more efficient going inside 50. From half the inside 50's (11-22), they have launched 4 goals to 2. This can be attributed to the Tigers goal kicking accuracy of 20 per cent.
http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2017/17/rich-v-bl
-
Lion Nick Robertson reported for a headbutt.
Shocking kick and turnover by Dusty.
Lions work it up for a goal against the run of play :banghead.
60 - 43
-
Nank out of middle and finds Jack on the lead. Going for No.5. Misses.
4.4 for Jack.
61 - 43
-
Lion turnover. Titch to Rioli 30m on the run and misses everything :scream.
Keep your head Dusty. Don't waste you time with that loser.
-
Grigg hands to Caddy to 1-1 with jack. Taps to Butler. Spears it to Georgie back to Butler and he hits the post from the boundary. Would've been goal of the year if he had kicked that.
Robertson kneed Dusty in the calf and Dusty slapped him back in the ear. Dimma took Dusty off to cool down.
-
Richmond has continued to dominate the clearances (7-3) and contested possessions (27-14). But are yet to convert their opportunities, creating a goal from just 30 per cent of shots on goal.
http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2017/17/rich-v-bl
-
Astbury hands over ot Short who finds Miles. Bounces it to Caddy who runs around Stefan Martin. Hands over to Cotch who goes to the square and Dusty gets the free against Nick Robertson lol. Plus 50. Dusty gets his revenge. Goal :gotigers.
Rich 9.13-67
Bris 6.8-44
-
3/4 time
Richmond 4.4 5.8 9.13-67
Brisbane 1.3 4.6 6.8-44
Goals: Riewoldt 4, Butler 2, Castagna , Edwards, Martin.
-
Down hill skiers playing like their globe trotters.
But no one wants to play hard footy and smash a few tackles except for Dusty grimes and Rance that all look like their scared of contact. Poofs!
-
ABC commentators summed it up:
"Richmond just doing enough when we have to. They take the foot off the pedal far too often in game. Might get them over the line today but won't help them for the rest of the year. It's driven by your leaders. Cotch must be injured as he's been out of the play today. A good side would put this Brisbane side to the sword. You'd at least want to see from Richmond put on a spurt and bang on 5-6 goals in a row."
Problem is we've had a chance that quarter to do that but our pathetic goalkicking just kills our momentum.
-
Good contest by Nank. Prestia goal within the first 30 secs of the last.
Rich 73
Bris 44
-
Soldo going off with a broken nose.
-
The Tigers transitioned effectively in that 3rd quarter, generating 2.2.14 from their defensive half. However, their goal kicking inaccuracy continues to be a factor with just 36 per cent of set shots converted into a goal.
Dustin Martin's 11th clearances has resulted in the Tigers 3rd goal from a stoppage in the 2nd half. They have now launched a goal from 33 per cent of clearances, all of which were sourced from Martin.

Contrary to the first 3 quarters, both sides have been extremely efficient in this quarter. Richmond has converted 2 goals from 3 inside 50's and the Lions a goal from both their 2 inside 50's.

Richmond has won 36 clearances and launched 21 inside 50's today. Dustin Martin has had 14 of those clearances and is just 1 short of his career high (15). This is the equal most of any Richmond player since 2000.

This exactly we keep teams in it bad kicking, brain fades and don't put games to bed.

If we play against any other side today we would have lost.
That win says more negatives than positives imo. 2015 all over again.
We have gone back to kicking it short and stuffing around with it too much.
Where has our defensive presure gone.
The club stands for nothing unfortunately. Too many players that read their own media.
We draft/trade for front running, soft, nice guys that don't really want to get their hands dirty. They are just happy to run around and let someone else do it.
That all stems from the coaching panel continually picking players on names and reputations rather than form.
I thought Short was horrible today but at least he has some credits in the bank.

No doubt about it as you say and we won't go anywhere until it's installed and the main reason we choke in games and finals.

Hmm. Soldo looked like a real gimp at times but he was good in the ruck. Led our tackle count at one stage too. I'd give him another game I think.

Yeah but what did you think of Nanks game? Was forced to be the forward who goes into the ruck and he hardly influenced it. I reckon we need to bring in a forward who can ruck and leave Nank as the no.1 ruck

Bit late of mayo on that Doc. According to the footy live app he only had 2 goal assists, and with 16 goals for the day, that Ain't 20%.

Didn't he kick one too? That makes at least 3 which is just shy of 20%. I thought he had a hand in another too making 4. So whilst I might be wrong with the latter, I wasn't that far off with my comment.... :whistle

This win was reminiscent of our crappy wins last year . Extremely uninspiring.
Type of match you delete off the foxtel IQ without a second viewing .
Four points was crucial though.
-
Cons: very poor standard of football and horrible accuracy in front of the sticks.
Pros: I thought Vlastuin's game back was good and he looks settled. Miles was the standout for me as his work at the stoppages with Martin really gave us good first use of the ball going forward. And of course Martin's individual performance was great also after half time
-
That was a putrid game from a mediocre side.

Dumb Richmond mistakes coming off their worst game of the year
Richmond would have been especially determined to play well after its worst performance of the season last week, when it was thumped by St Kilda by 67 points.
Early on, the signs looked good. Cotchin was involved multiple times as the Tigers kicked a goal in the first 30 seconds, with Jason Castagna snapping it through.
That early indication made it seem as if Richmond would assert itself for a comfortable win, but over and over again Damien Hardwick's men made silly errors.
Castagna missed a snap he should've put through, while his set shot later on went into the man on the mark.
A Jack Riewoldt dribble kick barely connected with his foot, when it should've been a goal.
Shane Edwards' handball in defence went straight to Hugh McCluggage, allowing Dayne Zorko to kick a goal.
The Tigers came away with the victory but missed a chance to boost their percentage, which could be costly come finals time.

Like watching a doco of a Tiger catching it's prey and then playing with it rather than ripping it's limbs off and licking it's lips as it swallows the last piece of flesh.
Very hard game to watch and honestly based on what I saw today we commit way too many turnovers to match it with the top sides, just kills momentum with so many turnover merchants in the side. Not even sure now who in a pressure situation I would feel relieved to see with the ball in their hands because everyone at some stage seemed to be guilty of the same thing.
Some of our passing was below VFL standard and wouldnt have been surprised at any stage to see a runner head out to a number of players carrying an eye testing chart. Maybe for the Tigers along with the concussion test they also need to instigate an eye test so after a horrible turnover occurs they should stop the game as the offending player is taken off and has to pass the test before being allowed back on.

Its not just that theyre turnovers bc we're going for high risk high reward type plays, they are almost always just really dumb, simple, unforced errors akin to putting an easy smash into the bottom of the net.
I've always said the day we stop doing this so consistently is the day we'll win a flag bc we are our own worst enemy

What did we all think of Griggs game today?
I personally think he is just a nothing footballer.
He gets plenty of footy but is just so uninfluential. He has some good games but is he really the answer when finals hit to have in the team?
These are the sort of players that this club need to weed out. He seems just happy enough getting his paycheque and getting to seasons end. Could you say he would do anything to get us a win?
Does anyone else think the same?
And does anyone else think there is anyone else in the same boat?

-
Grigg showing what he should be that being depth at best
Grigg played a very poor game. One passage of play really sticks out for me. I can't recall which quarter Grigg instead of taking the mark he allowed the ball to bounce which led to a really bad turnover.
-
The thing that puzzle me is that senior players are turning it over time again.
-
Thought Cotchin was outstanding today
Totally agree. His disposal and his attack on the football was first rate. He set up multiple goals and despite horrific kicking to him made a contest when needed.
Positives for me were the games of Cotchin, Vlas, Rioli, Nank and Martin in the second half. Jack, Rance, Astbury and Grimes were all solid.
Broad started well but made some bad mistakes in the second half. Soldo played okay especially at the bounces. Not sure whether it was a success playing him and Nank at the same time.
Negatives: Grigg and Caddy played poorly. Our disposal and kicking for goal remains a real problem. Brisbane seemed to get the majority of their goals from simple turnovers. We over handpassed and should have kicked the ball far more often.
