RICHMOND tall Ben Griffiths' hopes of making an AFL comeback have hit a roadblock after he suffered a right shoulder injury in the VFL against Collingwood on Sunday.
It was the 25-year-old's second game back following a two-and-a-half-month layoff after repeated concussions.
Griffiths contested a centre bounce early in the second term at the Punt Road Oval and followed up his efforts by attempting to tackle a Magpies opponent on the wing, only to injure his shoulder in the heavy contact.
The 200cm forward immediately went to ground clutching his arm and was assisted off the ground by trainers.
He did not return for the second half.
Griffiths made his comeback last weekend via the VFL, kicking two goals before being rested in the second half against Werribee.
He suffered his latest concussion in round two this season after landing heavily in a marking contest in the third quarter against Collingwood.
In his absence, the Tigers turned to inexperienced rookie Ivan Soldo and tall forward Todd Elton at various stages as support for Jack Riewoldt.
The club has also played a small forward line with some success while anticipating Griffiths' return later in the season.

Hardwick had hoped with another strong showing Griffiths might be ready but instead his season could be over.
“He played about a minute of game time and threw his arm into a tackle and dislocated his shoulder,’’ he said.
‘”I watched him last week and he looks a class above at VFL level and his manget was starting to make its way closer to my board.”

Big Tiger is still in club's finals picture

RICHMOND is confident tall forward Ben Griffiths will avoid surgery on his dislocated right shoulder, but it is not yet clear if he will return in time for the Tigers' looming finals campaign.
Griffiths, who suffered the injury in the VFL at the weekend, was due to meet his surgeon on Tuesday afternoon.
Club doctors were understood to be confident a period of rehabilitation would be enough for the shoulder to stabilise, but a timeline for his return is not expected this week.
Surgery for a shoulder dislocation can sideline a player for between three and four months, but the timeline can be significantly reduced if surgery is avoided.
Griffiths suffered the setback in his opening minutes of game time against Collingwood in the VFL on Sunday when attempting to tackle an opponent at the start of the second quarter.
It was his second game back from a two-and-a-half month lay-off as he recovered from a run of concussions that have kept him to just two senior games this season.
The 25-year-old booted two goals the week prior in his VFL return and had started to enter calculations for an AFL comeback in the Tigers' run to finals.
Richmond has turned to Todd Elton and rookie Ivan Soldo at various stages as support for forward Jack Riewoldt and ruckman Toby Nankervis this season.
The match committee has also played a small forward line with some success while anticipating Griffiths' return later in the year.

is it not typical Richmond putting all their eggs in very dubious baskets.
They clearly want a second tall option thats one short anyway but fail abysmally in trying more than one option.
-
Dimma today said 2-4 weeks for Griffs.
-
Which will be just about effin' time! :clapping :gotigers :clapping
-
just get rid of the hack and ffs at least try some other tall options
