Alex Rance, think of your legacy and stop the diving
Kane Cornes,
The Advertiser
25 July 2017
ALEX Rance is a phenomenal footballer but he has a decision to make and he needs to make it quickly.
Does he want to be remembered as one of the AFL’s greatest and toughest defenders? Or one of the best defenders who is also a diver?
Toby Greene had another brain fade. His jumper punch to the face is indefensible but Alex Rance milked it for all it’s worth and not for the first time this year.
In round 13, the AFL refused to punish the Richmond defender for his blatant acting when hit with a push from Buddy Franklin, which sucked in the umpire, who rewarded Rance with a stuff.
Disappointingly the AFL chose not to warn Rance under the staging laws at the Match Review Panel.
This behaviour is not exclusive to Rance.
On Friday night, Patrick Dangerfield was able to extract a stuff reversal, when he collapsed as Hugh Greenwood gently bumped him running by.
The action sucked in the gullible umpire, but not the 50,464 strong in attendance at the Adelaide Oval who were furious with the decision.
Adelaide legend and dual Norm Smith medallist Andrew McLeod took to twitter to show his disgust at the decision referencing a basketball term and describing Dangerfield’s acting as a “flop”.
Melbourne young gun Clayton Oliver has also been guilty of staging this year and the career and reputation of North Melbourne forward Lindsay Thomas has long suffered as the result of trying milk free kicks.
Jordan Lewis spoke of his embarrassment after an acting incident in 2014 involving Brendon Goddard.
He fell theatrically to the ground after being hit in the chest by Goddard and said in the aftermath it was uncomfortable to watch back.
“I don’t want to a get reputation for that.” Lewis said.
Even Chad Wingard, who regularly risks his safety running back with the flight of ball, was guilty of a poor staging effort in Port Adelaide’s round 12 loss to Essendon.
The biggest regret from my own playing career is the staging phase I went through.
As a young tagger I was often the target of physical attention as the opposition tried to protect their best player.
After one particular match in which I was tasked with tagging Ben Cousins and Daniel Kerr was on a mission to physical accost me at any opportunity.
Frustrated by the lack of protection from the umpires, my midfield coach at the time, the late Phil Walsh, sat me down and basically said the only way to stop the attacks is to go to ground and exaggerate the contact.
For a number of years this tactic often worked resulting in free kicks off the ball and left the opposition agitated.
However, I got into a habit I couldn’t get out of and later in my career even when I deserved a stuff the umpires often let it go clearly aware of my reputation.

This guy is so desperate to be in the headlines it's sad. An article titled about rance then he talks about anyone but rance ( and himself )
-
True. Reality that act got a 2 week suspension so he'd have been better off finding another catalyst for his column.
-
Why didn't he bring up Stevey J's dramatic back flip to get the free in the first place? If that wasn't a dive for a free I don't know what is
-
One of the best was from that st kilda flog who dropped quicker than a loaded Cotch slapped him in the belly
-
........... Moving on ...........
-
Was a genuine punch to the jaw.
Don't think there was any over the top acting.
VS Franklin maybe, but oh well.

Rance savaged over dive
News Corp.
3 June 2018
Richmond defender Alex Rance is a multiple All-Australian and widely regarded as one of the games greatest backmen of all time.
Unfortunately he had a moment to forget during his sides resounding victory over Essendon at the MCG on Saturday night.
As the third quarter entered the final 90 seconds Essendon launched the ball deep inside their forward 50 where Rance and opponent Shaun McKernan were jostling for position.
With the ball drawing closer McKernan bodied up to Rance and after feeling a faint touch on his side, Rance went flying forward like a superhero soaring off a building.
The backlash came in thick and fast for the Tigers defender with former player and now media personality Kane Cornes delivering a scathing whack.
“The worst free kick of the year. How an umpire can be sucked in by a blatant attempt from Rance, who let’s face and be honest a great player but he has a history with staging,” Cornes said.
“How the umpire can fall for this, he’s channelling his best superman impersonation.
“Too strong in the marking contest, McKernan judges it better. Rance does a move that we’re more likely to see in soccer and he’ll wake up and be embarrassed and Michael Christian should rightly penalise him for that.”
AFL media’s Nat Edwards also stated “he went down a little too easily in my opinion” on Sunday morning’s AFL Game Day.
The dive wasn’t the only one seen during the round with Sydney’s Callum Sinclair also drawing backlash after flailing backwards after marginal contact from Carlton’s Patrick Cripps.
Match Review Officer Michael Christian handed Sinclair a fine of $1000 for staging and now all eyes will turn to see the outcome from Rance’s act.

Hate it when players dive, poos me to tears.
Toughen up nugget heads.
Diving makes me think of soccer players that really go nuts and over the top with their acting, don't bring our game to that level PLEASE!
-
No excuse for Rance BUT I actually think it was a reaction to an event last week where he got an obvious push in the back by a saints forward and didn't get a free.
-
I don't care.
Just thought it was nice to see us get a free kick

Oh no Nat Edwards has criticized Rance, of course Nat has played AFL at the highest level so she would know.

;D
-
Essendon players dont cheat ......oh wait .
-
Oversold it, but remember it’s supposed to be an automatic free kick for having ur hand placed on the back, doesn’t even need to be a push anymore. Remember richo copping it in the first dream time game when scores were essentially level deep into time on when the rule was first introduced.
-
Didn't look good.
He dived and seeing the Sydney bloke copped a fine for his "sack of potatoes" collapse so he should be fined too.
Having watched the replay, things not helped by the fact umpire got the call wrong. No hand in the back, just a hand in the side
Whatever we move on
-
Simple fact is Rance doesn’t need to do it. His footy is good enough without it. I hope he stops because he is better than that.

At least he is well qualified to talk on the subject. You can't say that too often about old Cornes.

was clearly a soft push in the back nevertheless it was there, not happy about him milking it tough
-
Was clearly in the side, not even a free kick. Was just out played

Wayne Carey and Paul Roos are unimpressed with Alex Rance's free kick
"It's in a contest so the answer to that (whether Rance is fined) is no, but there's no doubt Rancey will see that vision and will try to cut that out of his game," Carey said on Triple M.
"It's not a good look for him ... he's an absolute star, the best defender of his time right now.
"Doing those types of things just puts a little bit of a stain on what is a glorious career.
"He's a great bloke, a great person and all those things - he just has to cut that crap out."
Carey is certain that Rance took a dive.
"If you asked someone to do a Superman impression, that's exactly what he did," Roos said.
Former premiership coach Paul Roos said that if Rance was a younger player, there is no doubt a Richmond coach would have a stern word with him.
"If it's a young person, absolutely, you're whacking him," Roos said.
Roos also said it is the first time in his long football career that he has seen a defender dive to that extent.
"Is it smart play? ... I'm perplexed," he said.

This garbage about his legacy is absolute tripe. I may be biased but I have never thought Alex was a diver. Not sure where this is coming from. Yes he over emphasized the push the other night but it's not his normal action.
Maybe it has something to do with our free kick differential and the fact we can't get a free kick
Does anyone talk about that in the media? No.
Kane Cornes fighting for the Port Adelaide game this week. Poor old Alex won't be getting too many free kicks this week.

Lets face it, its the only way for a Richmond player to get a free these days ... Rance was just pointing that fact out! :P
-
Rance is the perennial club joker so think his added theatrics are just part of who he is. Perhaps if he could go back in time he would have played it differently but thats Alex, he is a different personality type to most of the other players.

The only way it hurts his legacy is these media bozos continually going on about it as if he does it every single week. Or any other time he gets a dodgy free kick...you can expect them to be rambling on & Kane Cornes going back to 2011 to find example of more dodgy Rance frees.

I didn’t like it and he doesn’t need to do it. The media was correct to bring it to everyone’s attention and I’d expect the same if any player goes overboard staging like that.
On Saturday night whilst enjoying some light banter with the Essendon stuff I even brought to their attention the fact that their club were cheats and that lloyd must be their diving coach etc etc.
As a supporter you never forget who cheats and that’s why any player shouldn’t do it because it’s a form of cheating and no one ever lives it down.
Already people have named those who have dived in the past because even as good as you’ve been as a player people will still remember the cheating first no matter how minor the cheating is and no matter how great the player is.

Rance shouldn’t have been fined: Bartlett
By SEN
4 June 2018
AFL legend Kevin Bartlett doesn’t think Richmond defender Alex Rance should have been fined for his dive against Essendon.
Match Review Officer Michael Christian hit Rance with a $1,000 fine for staging, after being pushed by Bomber Shaun McKernan.
The incident saw Rance win the free kick, and Bartlett thinks the financial sanction for the 28-year-old isn’t justified.
“If the umpire pays a free kick to Rance, how can you actually fine him for staging?” he told SEN’s KB and The Doc.
“I thought you’d only get fined if it led to a player being reported.
“If Alex Rance actually got a push in the back, and it was a free kick, the fact that he over exaggerated, he shouldn’t get fined $1,000 for that.
“He might get laughed at by the fans and that for over acting and being theatrical. If he got pushed in the back, if it’s a free kick, he shouldn’t get a $1,000 fine.
SEN’s KB and The Doc with Kevin Bartlett and Dr Turf can be heard Monday-Friday 3-6pm (3-5pm on Friday's), and you can subscribe to the podcast here
“He got a push, so it was a free kick. Are they saying it’s not a free kick?
“If that free kick was paid for a push, the fact he was a bit theatrical about it, he shouldn’t get fined $1,000.”
Rance has been criticised by numerous former players, including Kane Cornes, Wayne Carey and Paul Roos, for his actions.

To an extent I am with KB on this.
Rance exaggerated the impact of the push, but he was pushed on the footage I saw.
I remember Richo having that push paid against him in 2007 against the Bombers. There wasn't much more in it than that, and that one turned the whole game.

Speaking on AFL360, Richmond forward Jack Riewoldt stood by Hardwick’s stance, “annoyed’ at the media commentary throughout the past few days.
“I reckon Robert Walls unfairly commented and used words that were really disappointing about Alex that I think that if you knew him and knew his character that you would never say about a guy like him,” Riewoldt said on AFL 360.
“I saw Matthew Richardson tweeted the other day on social media, that about the 95 to 98 per cent of players would’ve hammed it up a little bit to get a free kick in some sort of situation.
“I reckon there’s a line when people question your play and I think it’s starting to get to the point where people are actually questioning his character.
“He’s a great person, he’s done a lot for our football club and a lot for the AFL. I think the word hysterical comes to mind when I think about the commentary we’ve had.”
Melbourne vice-captain Jordan Lewis also agreed with Riewoldt believing that it was “extreme” to call into question is character.
Hardwick’s call come as Carlton premiership great Robert Walls labelled Rance’s efforts as “pathetic.”
“I thought it was pathetic. He’s better than that,” Walls told Fox Sports News’ AFL Tonight on Monday
“He’s got history — we’ve all seen this time and time again,” Walls said.
“He should be embarrassed by it. He’s done it before, so he just needs to get it out his game because he’s too good a player to let that sort of thing come down on him.”

scare people into leaving him alone rather than tossing his sorry ass out of the place

I agree with comments made by Jack and Richo. I agree also with the comments made by KB. What Walls said about Rance's character sums Walls up. He was a poor coach and now he is a poor commentator.
-
To this day I am happy that channel 10 never got the AFL deal again because Walls, Huddo, Lane were the unholy trinity of worst commentary you could ever have in a game. Especially Walls' "special" comments.
-
TBH I think Richo is a shocking commentator as well.
-
Walls seems to have a chip on his shoulder regarding the Tigers so takes any opportunity to have a dig.

Is there a rule on this forum against negative comments about the great Matthew Richardson?

Did Alex Rance take another dive in Richmond’s loss to Port Adelaide?
Herald Sun
June 9, 2018
THE spotlight was on Alex Rance again with accusations the Richmond defender may have staged for a free kick again in Friday night’s loss to Port Adelaide.
Broadcaster Channel 7 asked fans on Twitter if Rance had dived following a one-on-one contest with Power forward Charlie Dixon late in the second quarter.
Rance was this week fined $1000 for staging after a theatrical tumble against Essendon last Saturday night.
This time, however, Rance appeared to bumped off balance by Dixon with both players contesting the ball in Port’s forward line.
Despite falling to ground, Rance attempts to spoil as Dixon spilt the mark.
Against the Bombers last week, Rance was awarded a free kick when he overdramatically threw himself forward after a push from Shaun McKernan.
North Melbourne legend Wayne Carey said the All-Australian defender “has just got to cut that crap out”.
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick was shocked by the reaction to Rance’s dive and leapt to his player’s defence.
Surprisingly, the latest incident involving Rance divided opinion on social media.

Anyone who thinks that is a dive has never played the game. Running forward, eyes on the ball, getting ready to spoil and giving away kilos who wouldn’t get thrown off balance.

Personally, I love it.
Keep it up Rancey - cause you’re the only one doing it

Meanwhile Ben Brown still escapes scrutiny (Brad Scott even whinged yesterday that the umps weren't giving him enough frees -if only Jack received such "unfair" treatetment- while the media lapped it up)and no-ones questioning Duckwood's "legacy"..... :shh

Exit stage right: No case to answer for Rance in Power clash
By Jon Pierik
The Age
9 June 2018 — 3:49pm
Richmond defender Alex Rance has escaped censure for an incident with Port Adelaide's Charlie Dixon which added to debate about staging.
Rance appeared to be bumped off the ball by Dixon as the two men contested a mark late in the second quarter on Friday night at the Adelaide Oval. As he fell to the ground, Rance attempted to spoil, with Dixon dropping the mark. It did not matter, for the umpire paid a free kick to the Power's Sam Gray.
Upon a replay being shown, Channel Seven commentator Bruce McAvaney then asked: "So here is what we are talking about with Alex Rance, just going forward you think or not?"
Match review officer Michael Christian found Rance had no case to answer on Saturday, providing a clean sheet in the Power's 14-point win.
"There were no charges laid and no others incidents that required detailed explanation," the AFL said in a statement.
The host broadcaster also took to Twitter during the match to seek responses on whether Rance had dived, the incident coming days after he was fined $1000 for staging against Essendon.
Rance had been awarded a free kick, having thrown himself forward after a push from Shaun McKernan. The incident prompted AFL great Wayne Carey to claim it "puts a stain on his [Rance's] career".
Essendon great Matthew Lloyd, having had a reputation for staging in his career, said on Saturday Rance had not staged against the Power. But he offered some advice to the Tigers' great.
"I was bad for a year or two but it lived with me for six or seven years. You just don’t lose it," he said on 3AW.
"I would love for Rance to pull back because it’s taking away from what a great footballer he is."
Tigers coach Damien Hardwick had defended the All-Australian star after the McKernan incident.
"We're always trying to bring a champion down and that's what I thought this was. As long as we've set the standard now, I'll find five of those free kicks a game that are over-exaggerated free kicks," he said.
"I was really disappointed in the commentary. He's a champion of the game and I don't think we need to be saying it's a stain on his career. I found that really disappointing and I think there will be a lot of people embarrassed by the commentary if we go back and look at their career."

Don't hold your breath waiting for an apology, Alex. Typical of certain look-at-me media types to create and push their own false narrative and hysterical agenda even when the facts obviously contradict them ::) :sleep.
-
I can't believe the hysteria about Rance. Why was this even looked at? It was just so clear cut he was pushed that I don't know why the incident was even brought up. Ridiculous.
-
I hope he keeps diving.
Indictment on the umpires if they keep falling for it.

From Robbo's 'tackle' column:
8. RANCE BASHING
Even the official AFL twitter stream was encouraging commentary of an incident when Rance was bumped by Charlie Dixon and was flung forward, which prompted more claims he dived. What a joke of an accusation. Life’s comfortable at home on the couch, or at the bar at the pub, or behind a keyboard. It wasn’t a dive. Get over the Rance bashing.

The only commentary from Robbo I've ever agreed with. The AFL asking for commentary via social media should be investigated by Richmond and an official apology demanded.
Do these peanuts in the media understand what mass hysteria can do? Thought I could actually hear people booing when Rance got the ball on Friday night. What a disgrace if this would happen to one of the greatest defenders to ever play the game. And all started from an imbecile like Cornes and ratified by the moral compass Carey and then supported by the Richmond hating Walls.
Richmond need to get tough before this ends in an Adam Goodes type fiasco

The Power bunts were certainly booing, albeit mildly.

Kidding themselves if they think that was a dive.
Just absolute BS!
It’s disappointing I recon.

'Dive' charge won't change Rance

RICHMOND defender Alex Rance says he won't change the way he plays despite being sanctioned for staging in round 11.
Rance was fined $1000 after playing for a free kick when bumped by Essendon's Shaun McKernan in the Tigers' Dreamtime at the 'G win.
The incident provoked competition-wide scrutiny of the premiership defender, with Kane Cornes and Wayne Carey among the big names to question his actions.
"I think I'll just keep playing my way," Rance told AFL.com.au.
"It happened, I accepted the sanction and moved on."
Coach Damien Hardwick strongly defended his player after he played for the free kick, and Rance was grateful for the internal support.
"One of the things I do love the most, is that he's proud of us and he'll always protect us," Rance said.
"It's the same with Trent (Cotchin), it's the same with Brendon Gale, our three main leaders."

If Rance did what Buddy did last night to win a free kick and shot on goal then the usual RFC/Rance haters like Cornes and co. would be out in force accusing him of diving. Their silence is deafening ::).

I feel that he is maligned due to the colours that he wears, and had it not been Richmond he would be looked upon in a different manner

Staging commentary 'farcical', says Dimma
Mitch Cleary

Jun 17, 2018 7:59PM
DAMIEN Hardwick has launched an impassioned defence of Alex Rance and fellow champions' exaggeration of free kicks, describing recent commentary on staging as "farcical."
The Richmond coach called on the targeting of big names to end after a recent spate of players being scrutinised for playing for free kicks, following his side's 18-point win over Geelong on Sunday.
Rance was fined $1000 for diving in a round 10 marking contest before questions were raised last week when he propelled forward after a nudge from Port Adelaide's Charlie Dixon.
After Lance Franklin won a free kick for a push in the back on Friday night and Patrick Dangerfield appeared to amplify contact on Sunday, Hardwick said the discussion needed to stop.
"I've over-exaggerated for a free kick, absolutely, and every player within the AFL system has done the same," Hardwick said post-game.
"Unfortunately, they seem to pick on my bloke (Rance), it's what we do, (focus on) champions.
"Buddy Franklin over-exaggerates a free kick (against West Coast), all of a sudden the media are all over him.
"I think it's farcical to be perfectly honest. I sit here and I could find you five from this game.
"That staging rule is not for the over-exaggeration of free kicks. The rule itself would say it is but to me, if I push someone and he falls over that's staging."
Premiership players Wayne Carey and Kane Cornes led the scrutiny of Rance's initial staging incident against Essendon and Hardwick believes focus needs to be placed elsewhere.
"Just let the guys play, pull your (media) heads in I reckon," he said.
"Just talk about the game, stop looking for the sensational headlines that is just ridiculous, I get a bit tired of it to be fair."

And Lloyd did it last night with Jones. Lloyd asked Jones if he was at the presser; Jones said no. Lloyd then said "... but if he was just answering a question?" ...

IT'S A DIRTY WORD
RICHMOND star Alex Rance says his "dive" was no worse than any other player attempting to win a free kick.
The All-Australian captain was widely criticised for theatrically going to ground in the Tigers' Dreamtime at the 'G win over Essendon three weeks ago.
Rance was adamant every player tried to "manipulate and accentuate" contact in order to win free kicks and didn't like being labelled for staging.
"It's hard when there's a lack of clarity ... staging is a bit of a dirty word in my mind," he told 5AA Radio.
"There's always parts of the game when players are trying to manipulate and accentuate contact - whether its raising an elbow to draw high contact or diving forward in a tackle - or something like that to draw free kicks.
"It was a little bit off that I became click bait for the past however long its been and then to bring Buddy into it as well. He's a champion of the game.
"Staging, for me, is a bit of a rank term for what is just accentuating and trying to draw a free kick."
Rance was fined for staging by the match review officer while Franklin was cleared.
