With Jack possibly missing the Hawthorn game as well, if one of our young talls wants to be in the AFL side next week then tomorrow's VFL game is the one to stand out in.

Great to see Jack Graham back
x2.

VFL Tigers secure ninth win

Richmond VFL 14.19-103 def North Ballarat 8.13-61

A Jack Graham-inspired VFL Tigers rallied to win their ninth match of the season on Sunday, running out 42-point winners against North Ballarat at Mars Stadium.

Graham recorded a match-high 33 disposals, including 15 contested possessions, in an industrious display on his return from an ankle injury.

His efforts were compounded by that of Tyson Stengle and Ben Lennon (three goals each), as well as Jayden Short (27 disposals), who shone as the Tigers climbed in to the VFL’s tightly contested top four.

Richmond development coach Ryan Ferguson said the side showed plenty of determination and grit against one of the competition’s most improved sides.

“I thought we embraced the struggle, embraced the fight,” Ferguson said.

“They play the ground well, and are a much improved team compared to thew last time we faced them.

“They got their first win last week, and pushed Box Hill in a tough game as well, so we knew what they would bring.

“But when we played our game, and got our tackles up in that last quarter, we were able to overwhelm them."

Facing the Roosters for the second time this season after their strong Round 1 victory, it was clear from early in the fixture that the home side would not be defeated quite so easily on its home turf.

The Roosters brought intensity and drive to each contest, pushing the midfield engine of Graham, Jacob Townsend and Jacob Ballard to dominate the contested ball count and give their forward counterparts quality service.

Lennon reaped the benefits of their work, nailing two of his eventual three goals in the first quarter, while Ryan Bathie also nailed a solitary major as the VFL Tigers looked for the early break.

However, inaccuracy would prove costly as the Roosters pegged two goals back to trail by 12 points at the first break.

Sitting pretty on nine disposals at quarter time, Graham continued his tireless work out of the middle, doubling his disposal count by the main break.

While the forwards took some time to get firing at the start of the term, a Shaun Mannagh special provided some timely relief, before Ivan Maric followed suit with a perfectly executed snap from a tight angle.

North Ballarat continued to be a thorn in Craig McRae’s side, but a Tyson Stengle goal on the half-time siren opened up a four goal lead, one which would prove vital in the result.

With windy conditions beginning to pick up in the state’s north-west, the second half proved to be a scrappy affair, with both sides struggling to control possession and tempo.

Short opened his account with a thumping effort from long-range, before vice-captain Ballard marked courageously and finished calmly to give the VFL Tigers a much-needed buffer.

Yet, even with all the momentum in their favour, two late goals to the Roosters had the Tigers sitting in a precarious position at the final change, with only 15 points separating the sides in an enthralling contest.

With all to play for in the final term, both sides' experienced heads proved the difference, as the Tigers nailed six goals to put clear daylight between themselves and the Roosters.

Stengle’s second came within seconds of the restart, and the VFL Tigers took complete control of the contest, with Todd Elton scoring his first goal for the day moments after.

Jake Batchelor went forward to good effect, launching a monstrous 55-metre effort to register his third goal for the year at VFL level, before Lennon crumbed and snapped cleverly to bring up his third.

Stengle’s third also came shortly after, before a crafty Brandon Wood finish put the exclamation point on a dominant fourth quarter performance.

Graham and Townsend continued to dominate the midfield battle, while the one-on-one work of Oleg Markov provided the perfect springboard for the Tigers relentless attack right until a much-welcomed final siren.

The VFL Tigers can now enjoy a well-earned week off, before returning in two weeks time to face Geelong in a bumper clash at Simonds Stadium on Saturday, August 12.

Stengle, Lennon, Menadue, Graham, Garthwaite & Moore  would all be long-term upgrades on the likes of Grigg, Edwards, Castanga, Houli, Bellis, Prestia, Miles, Caddy & Soldo... :shh

Like to see Townsend given one last shot as a mid/fwd too...

Yes he can.  He is garbage.

Play Graham, he might be underdone but I would rather he get 4 solid AFL games of footy before finals. He could be the X factor we are looking for.

Take the risk Tigers, what have we got to lose?

Development and VFL midfield coach, Xavier Clarke's summary of the AFL and VFL-listed players from Sunday’s Round 15 VFL win over North Ballarat.

AFL LISTED PLAYERS

Jack Graham

33 disposals, 15 contested possessions, five marks, three clearances, nine inside 50’s.

Had a pretty solid game and after having the week off with an ankle injury it didn’t look like he missed a beat. He was dominant throughout the whole game, his number of contested possessions show a good balance of an inside and outside game.

Jayden Short

27 disposals, ten marks, six inside 50’s, seven rebound 50’s, one goal one behind.

Came back from AFL level and played above VFL level. Looked elite with his ball use of half-back and snuck forward during the third quarter to kick a goal. It was good to see him play good footy for the day.

Jacob Townsend

25 disposals, 15 contested possessions, seven marks, nine clearances, eight tackles.

He’s in really good form performing consistently each week, the biggest highlight for him was his number of tackles and clearances.

Oleg Markov

20 disposals, six contested possessions, three marks, three tackles, four inside 50’s.

Again he was really solid across half-back and looked strong in the contest. He had some really good aerial contests but his run and dash is his strength off half-back.

Taylor Hunt

17 disposals, four contested possessions, two tackles, two marks.

Played a little bit of wing, midfield, and went back at times. When he gets his game up and going he’s really good with his ball use, he probably didn’t have a massive impact on the day but once he got back to his defensive game he was really good for us.

Connor Menadue

17 disposals, four marks, two tackles.

Didn’t get a lot of the footy but structurally he sets up really well for the team. We’d like to see him get a little bit more of the footy in his hands to use his pace and his skills, but when he did get the footy he used it really well to set up his teammates and put them in better spots.

Tyson Stengle

17 disposals, seven contested possessions, six marks, two clearances, three goals one behind.

Looked lively, crafty, and makes things happen every time he gets the footy.

Jake Batchelor

16 disposals, seven marks, eight tackles, one goal.

Was solid again in defense and plays a vital role for us down back. He went forward in the second half and became a good target kicking one goal, he’s in really good form at the moment.

Callum Moore

16 disposals, five marks, four inside 50’s, two behinds.

Competing really well in the air, his contested marking is becoming a feature of his game and he had three or four efforts that set up a goal. He has been spending a little bit of time in the ruck at centre square bounces, he’s starting to add this to his game as he continues to grow with confidence and is competing really well at the moment.

Ivan Maric

13 disposals, nine contested possessions, four marks, 23 hitouts, one goal.

Was certainly one of his best games this season; he took the game on, looked lively around the ground, and kicked a really nice goal from the pocket. It is great to see him really enjoying his footy and getting some reward for the effort that he’s put in.

Todd Elton

11 disposals, three marks, one goal one behind.

Played forward and took a really nice contested mark late in the game. He provides a target for us down the line and his work rate up and down the ground is something we value. We’d like to see him hit the scoreboard a bit more but he has an impact and plays a role for us really well.

Mabior Chol

Ten disposals, four marks, ten hitouts.

Played down back at the start of the game and went in to the ruck looking lively and promising with his second and third efforts. He took some really nice contested marks throughout the game.

Ben Lennon

Ten disposals, five marks, four tackles, three goals one behind.

Provides a really good target in the air or on the ground. His ability to get up and down the ground along with his smarts in the forward line when getting off his opponent, is something opposition players struggle with.

Ryan Garthwaite

Seven disposals, four contested possessions, two tackles, four rebound 50’s.

Huge GPS numbers, he ran about 16km for the game. He probably didn’t get the match up he would have liked as North Ballarat went with a pretty small forward line, however, this kid continues to turn up and give it his all.
