The AFL-listed players eligible for 2017 VFL finals series
Ben Waterworth

Source: FOX SPORTS
WHAT a time to be alive for Richmond supporters.
Not only is their AFL team in excellent health and shape heading into a highly-anticipated finals series, their VFL team is also right in the premiership mix — and will have a strong list of players to choose from.
The VFL this week released the list of players eligible for the first week of the VFL finals, with the fifth-placed Tigers in a luxurious position.
Of the Tigers’ eligible finals players, 23 are on the club’s AFL list — the most of the six VFL teams with an AFL-club alignment that will feature in the finals.
Richmond’s list is headlined by ball magnet Anthony Miles, who has struggled to hold his spot in the Tigers’ AFL team yet starred at VFL level to become one of the favourites for the league’s best and fairest award the JJ Liston Medal. From his seven VFL games, Miles has kicked 7.7 and averaged 32 disposals, seven marks, six inside 50s and five tackles.
Sam Lloyd and Ivan Maric are two experienced players that could be selected, while youngsters Jayden Short, Shai Bolton and Tyson Stengle are also eligible.
But whether recent goalkicking hero Jacob Townsend, who has booted 11.1 from his two most recent AFL games, sees any VFL time remains to be seen.

As part of my IS package we get a few pre-match briefings. Last week was the final one for season 2017
It was one of the questions; who's eligible for the VFL finals and how does it work
Those 3 are qualified for VFL finals and they mentioned that Caddy could play as well if need be

Must admit very surprised none of them are playing(named) then' guess I'll see later.
Go Tiger twos

Let's hope it's an advantage that our boys know there's still a chance for them to sneak into our AFL side in finals with a strong performance compared to the Pies who know their senior players are already on their season end holidays. If our VFL side wins and go deep into September then it allows us a match-ready full squad to choose from during the AFL finals and keeps pressure on spots in the AFL side. That's what happened with the doggies last year. They won both VFL and AFL flags.
-
It will also give Conca, Griffiths and Hampson something to occupy their time without bothering us
-
Would have thought game time for Graham this weekend would be advantageous?
They might see him as being to important to risk? A good chance to freshen up if nothing else.
Also, I would think the club has worked hard on developing a program for dealing with the bye week. They might prefer to have all players likely to be playing in the first final against Geelong on the same program, rather than some players doing something different.
I don't know, just speculating.
-
It will also give Conca, Griffiths and Hampson something to occupy their time without bothering us
Hoping they have average games so that Dimma isn't put in a position of being seduced

Darley through traffic and Moore marks cleverly one-handed. However, gets too close to the man on the mark and misses.

the sooner conca leaves the club the better....anyone disagree?????
-
Our intensity dropped away since midway through the 2nd qtr and the Pies started winning the contests. That and B&W friendly umpiring allowed the Pies back in the game. We lifted a bit in the last 10 mins of the 3rd but our disposal and decision making forward of centre has been terrible. The only Tiger that looks dangerous is Bolton. His efforts and pace are responsible for both goals that qtr. Without him, we'd be goal-less since early 2nd qtr.

Thankfully that last quarter didn't go to previous choking scripts and when the Pies were flying home and hit the front (thanks to the umps mostly) we were able to regroup, lift and turn it around to win the game. However, it's concerning that the playing group still switch off when we get to a 6 goal lead thinking the game is won as we did in the 2nd qtr. The seniors have done the same. You can't play with form and think it can be turned on and off and then back on like a switch. You need to always have a killer instinct. With 10 more inside 50s we should have won easily.
I can't see too many changes to the senior side based on today. Corey Ellis was very good in the first half but quieter in the second. Bolton was crucial in that second half with his bursts plus 2 goals and another assist against the run of the play. The rest were mostly as expected. Good things mixed in with sloppy mistakes. Miles will be probably named best for us by the media as he got the most possies. I'd guess one other positive is Griffs got through another game unscathed but aside from a few good solid marks presenting up at the ball, it wouldn't get him an AFL game.

VFL Finals 2017: Richmond defeats Collingwood, Chris Mayne performance, Sam Lloyd stars
September 2, 2017 5:28pm
by Riley Beveridge and Tom Morris
FOX SPORTS
IT WAS almost Bizarro World in the VFL on Saturday, with Richmond holding its nerve in a final and Chris Mayne nearly the hero for Collingwood.
Having led by 23 points at the 17-minute mark of the final quarter, the Tigers looked all but home in their elimination final at Fortburn Stadium in Port Melbourne.
But then the script changed dramatically.
Maligned forward Chris Mayne and ferocious midfielder Gus Borthwick were the catalysts behind a sudden and remarkable Magpies comeback.
Mayne kicked two quick goals, with Josh Thomas and Josh Daicos also hitting the scoreboard as Collingwood booted four majors in four-and-a-half minutes.
All of a sudden, they were in front. And those predicting another Richmond choke in September were ready to start celebrating their first correct tips for the finals series.
But up stepped Sam Lloyd. A clutch goal broke a run of four behinds that he’d kicked for the match, as he ended with 33 disposals and 23 contested possessions.
“I was a bit yippy in front of goals in the first quarter,” Lloyd told Channel 7 afterwards.
“I couldn’t really judge the wind. It was a bit funny. I kicked the last one when it mattered and it is a good feeling to go through.
“Credit to us, we are a strong team. We came out well.”
Mayne had the chance to bring Collingwood back into the match and reduce the margin to a solitary point with seconds remaining, but missed what would have been his third for the term.
Jake Batchelor kicked the sealer, with Richmond winning by 12 points and setting up a semi final against Casey, after Melbourne’s VFL affiliate lost to Williamstown in the qualifying final.
Hard-nosed Richmond midfielder Anthony Miles also pushed his case for a senior return ahead of the finals, with 35 disposals, nine clearances, five tackles and a goal.

Miles mounts his case for Tigers' selection
afl.com.au
2 September 2017
RICHMOND midfielder Anthony Miles has mounted a late bid for September selection with a commanding performance in the VFL Tigers' thrilling elimination final win against Collingwood on Saturday.
The Tigers will also have the option of playing a second tall forward through the finals after an impressive performance from big man Ben Griffiths, who is fit and in form after a season ruined by injuries.
Miles was best afield on Saturday with 37 possessions (19 contested), nine clearances, six inside 50s and a goal, standing up during a thrilling finale that saw the Magpies pinch a late lead through a clutch Chris Mayne goal.
The Tigers hit back through Sam Lloyd (36 possessions), with Jake Batchelor sealing the result with a late goal as the Tigers progress to face the Casey Demons in a semi final next week.
The Tigers chose not to select forward Josh Caddy, who trained strongly on Friday as he returns from a hamstring injury, while tall pair Todd Elton and Ivan Soldo were cut from the extended squad pre-game.
Mayne, whose future at Collingwood has been thrown into doubt after comments from coach Nathan Buckley on Friday, stood up late in the fourth quarter to give the Magpies a one-point lead.
He missed a set shot from 45m minutes later, however, with Buckley an onlooker in a Magpies contingent that included president Eddie McGuire and football manager Geoff Walsh.
Other Tigers pushing for senior selection on Saturday were Corey Ellis, who was best afield in the first half and finished with 26 possessions, and Jayden Short, who was dangerous with 23 disposals.
Senior listed Tigers Reece Conca, Shai Bolton, Shaun Hampson and Connor Menadue also lined up in front of a crowd that included coach Damien Hardwick and star players Dustin Martin and Jack Riewoldt.

MILES PRESSES HIS CASE
Herald-Sun
2 September 2017
MIDFIELD hard nut Anthony Miles has pressed his case for a spot in Richmond's qualifying final against Geelong next Friday night after starring in the Tigers' thrilling win over Collingwood in the VFL.
Miles amassed 35 disposals and kicked a goal in the elimination final at Fortburn Stadium.
Alongside teammate Sam Lloyd, Miles was among the best for the Tigers in the 12-point win.
"It is great to have both sides in and one injury at the club at the moment," Miles said. "Our VFL program is really strong and Craig McRae has a really good bond between the VFL and AFL guys.
"He has created a great club environment. A lot of guys would probably like to be playing AFL it is always nice to come back and play with these guys."
Miles has played just five senior matches this year after 19 in 2016, squeezed out of Damien Hardwick's team following the recruitment of Dion Prestia and Josh Caddy.
But given he is a contested ball winner, his game suits finals footy and could find himself in the frame to win a spot to face the Cats at the MCG.
Richmond led Collingwood all day, restricting the Magpies to just one goal in the opening half before Collingwood got their game going in the second half.
"We had to find a way twice to win it and they certainly came back," Miles told Channel 7.
"We knew after half-time they would respond. Full credit to Collingwood. They did that. The boys dug deep and obviously great to win."

HAS LLOYD PLAYED HIMSELF INTO AN AFL FINALS BERTH?
Herald-Sun
2 September 2017
RICHMOND forward Sam Lloyd has pushed his case for an AFL recall in next Friday night's qualifying final against Geelong after a match-winning performance in the thrilling elimination final win over Collingwood in the VFL.
Lloyd finished with 33 disposals and kicked a late goal to put the Tigers back in front after the Magpies kicked four goals in five minutes to steal the lead late.
The 27-year-old was huge in the midfield all day but it was his final five minutes as he won clearances and set up a goal, while kicking one himself that stood out.
"I think that we came out really hard," he told Channel 7 post-match. "Our defensive pressure was up and numbers around the ball.
"We probably slipped after half-time and they caught us off guard. Credit to us, we are a strong team and came back.
"We were up against it but came out well."
Lloyd has played eight games for Richmond's senior side this year and booted six goals.

Elton goneski?
You would think so, YaBB, if he can't get into the VFL side.
I'm so shocked by this!

From VFL reporter Brent Diamond: At selection, Tigers talls Todd Elton and Ivan Soldo were left out of the clash due to team balance.

VFL Tigers secure finals win

Richmond VFL 12.13-85 def Collingwood VFL 11.7-73
The VFL Tigers came up trumps in a thrilling elimination final, downing Collingwood by 12 points at North Port Oval on Saturday.
After the Tigers controlled the first half in a commanding defensive display, Collingwood clawed their way back into the contest, and eventually took the lead midway through the final term.
However, with all to play for in the dying moments, Sam Lloyd and Jake Batchelor slotted huge majors to seal a memorable victory against their old rivals.
A jubilant Craig McRae hailed the team effort of his side in the thrilling victory, and gave credit to the strong resolve of the Pies.
“All credit to Collingwood, they got themselves back into the game well,” McRae said.
“We’re just really proud of how the guys stuck together in that situation.”
McRae also highlighted the key roles of Lloyd and Miles in the win, citing their experience and composure as key factors in the win.
“Their impact was huge,” he said.
“We don’t often like to point out individuals, but I did give credit to Lloydy in the rooms for his goal.
“Their impact on the game was really pleasing.”
Kicking with the wind in the opening quarter, the VFL Tigers wasted no time in stamping their presence on the contest, slotting four goals in the first term, while restricting the Pies to a solitary point in the process.
Corey Ellis opened the account for the day with a thumping set shot from beyond 50, before a pinpoint Lloyd pass set up Taylor Hunt for a quick-fire second.
Callum Moore added one more before the siren, hammering home the advantage after a series of missed opportunities plagued the VFL Tigers.
At the other end of the ground, Mabior Chol was thwarting every attack with his strong aerial presence, while Jayden Short and Sam Darley were combining to deadly effect coming off half-back.
The Tigers’ momentum continued into the second stanza, with a second to Moore and a first to Ben Griffths cementing the margin.
Collingwood held strong for the remainder of the quarter, and Mason Cox opened their account for the day moments before the siren blew.
Clearly discontent with their first half performance, the Pies came flying out of the gates in the second, and by the final change, the VFL Tigers’ lead had been trimmed down to a mere 10 points.
Shai Bolton provided a quick answer to Jesse White’s goal for the Pies, with a silky pick up and clever left-footed snap, while Anthony Miles stood up in the heat of battle, his goal keeping the Pies at bay as Cox grabbed two more.
With a spot in next week’s semi-final up for grabs, both sides battled hard into the final quarter, with two goals to Bolton and Ben Lennon creating a handy buffer for the VFL Tigers in the opening minutes.
However, the Pies had been chasing a deficit all day, and continued to fight at every contest, getting their reward through three quick goals that turned the clash on its head.
Unbelievably, the Pies then grabbed the lead with 20 minutes played in the final term, thanks to an emphatic Chris Mayne set shot.
With their season on the line, the VFL Tigers kicked into gear, piling forward in a desperate attempt to regain the lead.
After Steve Morris scored a behind to bring the sides onto level terms, the stage was set for Sam Lloyd, who produced a brilliant set shot from a tight angle to send the Tiger fans into overdrive.
Jake Batchelor then sealed the win, wandering forward and dribbling home a left-footed effort from 25 metres out, putting the game beyond the hard-working Pies.
The VFL Tigers battled it out for one more minute, before a long-overdue siren confirmed a coveted spot in a highly anticipated semi-final for McRae’s side.
Richmond VFL will return to North Port Oval next Saturday to face Casey. Further information, including timings and ticketing, will be provided early next week.

Very good. :cheers
-
Shai very talented. There's a big game around the corner...
-
Shai's first goal was really good. He played well and brought a lot of energy to the side. Miles was best on ground. I thought Moore's game was fantastic and Ellis was very good in the first half. Lennon played okay and Short had a good game.

Finals specialist in waiting

Only saw the 2nd half but I thought Chol was really poor. Cant see him making it at this stage.

Bolton needs to come in for Castagna...gamebreaker who would thrive on the big stage....only thing I didn't like was that he made zero tackles...though he did lay 9 the week before and it often seems to be either a feast or a famine with him in that department....finals demands and senior teammates might encourage the good defensive Shai....
Big shame Moore is still on the rookie list.... :shh
Endurance has to be Chol's sole focus during the pre-season - has the smallest tank I've ever seen but it was no coincidence Collingwood starting hittng the scoreboard once he wore out....still reckon we're missing a trick not developing him in the ruck though.... :shh
Garthwaite looks the player they wanted Darrou to be..i.e. taller & quicker
Won't be here next year so it's all moot ....but Lennon impacted the match when it most counted though like most I was surprised to see he had 22 touches....
I rate Stengle and he still looked dangerous at times but thought he was disappointing on the whole....
Miles got a lot of it......yep....he sure did....
Lloyd is Mr. Cool.....but it's his "efforts" leading up to those crucial moments that often cause them to be crucial moments rather than just icing on the cake....be handy if we could just play him for the last 5 minutes of a final....
CEllis in the guts on GTFO.....still a few soft, poor efforts befitting of his surname in the last though....
Menadue did some quite brilliant things but also nearly cost is the match.....remains an enigma.....
Short did more good than bad but there was still too much of the latter...
Conca still does 5 bad things for every good thing he does...so no change there....
Hopefully Batchelor stays on to be our VFL captain next year....
Griffiths.....meh....
Looking forward to Morris no longer being on our list....
Hamspud....... :facepalm

Hampson stats weren't too bad for a ruck
Can anyone comment on his actual game
Where there any Hampsonesque moments?
-

Shai had one decent piece of play in the first half and flashed in and out of play in the second half.(in a VFL match)
Still a fair way to go to be classed as a senior player.

Ummm too many to mention. He is pathetic in my world....just pathetic. How a professional can constantly miss handballs from one metre away is astonishing. His was soundly beaten in the ruck by the yank. The only good thing he did was take one or two marks... :help

He flew for about 20 marks but when you try to crash your hands together like symbols, you don't clunk many of them
