Looks like we fortunately got through unscathed.
Fire away with your changes, if any?

Will wait until after today's VFL match but I am hoping Miles forces his way in.

Not convinced with Broad gives us flexibility but decision making let's him down.

If Bolton plays an amazing game, maybe him in for Castagna

Castanga had an absolute stinker to cap off a run of stinkers
I suppose they are unlikely to make unforced changes but I would have him as an out

This is exactly the change needed. Bolton looks quicker and more dangerous around goal.

Yep totally agree, though I would've had Bolton in last night for him

George may have had a stinker but still kicked a goal and had 4 tackles but what I find amusing is no mention of Rioli's stinker. I know it's the norm but it still needs to be mentioned if you are going to talk about stinkers.
George is the easy target and Rioli is the blessed little boy.
Neither will get dropped for the prelim and only an idiot would suggest so.

NO CHANGES

Shai will be an amazing player for us but he is so light he gets thrown around and bumped too easily atm for finals imo, Castagna is harder in the contested stuff for mine. I feel for Miles, has done everything he can and was one of the few that could hold his head up from last year (despite having it nearly torn off nearly every game). Broad is good, he rode that intensity well for one of the inexperienced blokes in the team and will be better for it.
I think you don't mess with the squad, they are blooded now, they got a taste and Geelong threw everything at them early, and they soaked it up.
-
Dusty didn't get 30 touches last night. Might be a bit tired. Lot on his plate at the moment. Time for a rest?
No changes for mine. Have not been overly impressed with George lately, but I do like the bit of size and athletic ability he brings to our forward line. Bolton and co. will be great players, but to play those guys now is a high risk/high reward type situation and I don't think we need to take that type of risk just now.
-
yeah Dusty looked a bit cooked give him a run in the seconds, Cotch too

Just watched Tyson Stengle's highlights and he has to be a chance to replace one of our small forwards that did nothing on Friday night.

Bolton the X factor
Michael Gleeson
The Age
18 September 2017
Will the Tigers change a winning combination? Logic says no, but there is some chance of a tweak at selection.
It is doubtful they will make a change but Shai Bolton presents a persuasive argument for the Tigers to consider tinkering with the set up.
Richmond's small forwards are predominantly defensive players first and attackers second. Daniel Rioli is the most attacking, as Jason Castagna and Dan Butler tend to focus on high pressure first and the scoreboard second.
The query is whether they bring in Bolton as a more dangerous offensive player who still has the pace and pressure to play a defensive role.
But who would be squeezed out? Logically, it would either be Castagna or Jacob Townsend. The latter came into the side and had a big impact with 11 goals in two games, but was relatively quiet in the qualifying final.
Townsend is less effective than Castagna as a pressure forward but is a good mid-sized marking and goal kicking option.
The Giants already have a selection conundrum with Richmond's small forward line and taking Townsend out might further exploit that. Presently it is difficult to see who Adam Tomlinson matches up against. Tomlinson has been very good all year and was terrific against the Eagles but against the Tigers there is no natural opponent for him.
Phil Davis would be expected to go to Jack Riewoldt and Aidan Corr has the speed to play on one of the smalls and still take Dustin Martin when he goes forward. Corr has the height to compete with Martin in the air (or try to) and the pace to stick with him on a lead (or try to).
Tomlinson is then left with either Townsend, or having to play on a small forward. If GWS stick with Tomlinson, in the hope he can take Townsend, then the extra pace and X factor of Bolton would unsettle the Giants.

The luxury that gives tigers an undisputed edge a fit and firing reserves team still in the hunt
September 18, 2017 11:47am
Sarah Olle
FOX SPORTS
RICHMOND has a luxury heading into this weekend’s preliminary final that separates them from the three other clubs that remain in the hunt for the 2017 premiership.
The Tigers’ reserves are fit and firing and will take on Port Melbourne in the VFL grand final at Etihad Stadium on Sunday. And the impact of this is twofold.
Firstly, it gives a number of AFL-listed players an opportunity to put their hand up for selection.
And secondly — should Richmond progress through to the grand final — any such inclusion will have the benefit of being match-hardened, having played the weekend before in the VFL grand final.
If injury strikes Geelong, GWS or Adelaide, however, the incoming player may not have played a competitive match for up to a month, although Adelaide’s reserves and GWS’ reserves took part in a scratch match the Saturday after the qualifying final.
With Richmond’s list at optimal health, a plethora of AFL-listed players have led the Tigers’ VFL ascension, with a 65-point thrashing of the Box Hill Hawks catapulting the club into the grand final.
Sam Lloyd, Oleg Markov, Anthony Miles, Shai Bolton, Tyson Stengle, Shaun Hampson and Corey Ellis are just some of the players who’ll be looking to impress on Sunday — particularly if Richmond defeat GWS to secure a spot in the AFL grand final.
The 2017 JJ Liston Medal winner Jacob Townsend has shown it’s possible for a Tiger to force his way into the team.
And Tigers’ VFL coach Craig McRae believes it’s possible that another player could follow suit.
“Sam Lloyd’s form over the last month has been sensational, Anthony Miles continues to rack them up, Jayden Short, Oleg Markov, Corey Ellis and Shai Bolton; there’s a few waiting for opportunities,” McRae told SEN.
“This time of the year there’s normally a lot of band aids being put on and a lot of injections, but we are very fortunate we only have one injury on our list at the moment.”
Hampson’s strong VFL form has sparked debate surrounding Richmond’s structure, and whether or not the Tigers should opt to play another tall.
Toby Nankervis has admirably shouldered the ruck load all season and could arguably benefit from Hampson’s inclusion. As could Jack Riewoldt, who has played a lone hand as a key marking forward.
But McRae gave a strong indication Damien Hardwick would stick to his tried and tested formula — namely, of playing and trusting his smalls to get the job done.
“We’ve got all the talls in our VFL side. It’s been something we have talked about in match committee and it’s been well debated,” McRae said.
“Maybe we are ahead of the curve, who knows. We are creating an enormous amount of pressure in our forward line and it’s making a huge difference.
“It’s a challenge at VFL level because all those talls are playing with us now but at the moment it’s working for us.
“The speed of the game is enormous; it’s gone to a new level this year.”
While Richmond emerged from its qualifying final triumph injury-free, small forward Jason Castagna went goalless and fumbled throughout.
While he has played every match this season, it’s possible Bolton or Stengle could come in as a like-for-like replacement, with both players in strong VFL form,
“They’ve been so terrific in their growth in their first year here,” McRae said.
“Tys has probably been more consistent over the whole journey of the VFL this season, kicking over 30 goals and impacting consistently, whereas Shai has just had unbelievable moments of brilliance in our season.”

The Barometer - Preliminary Finals
Herald-Sun
18 September 2017
RICHMOND
SELECTION: Several Tigers are banging down the door in the VFL but don’t expect Damien Hardwick to mess with team chemistry. That goes for the AFL and VFL team. That said, does the VFL’s extra match fitness - the AFL team has played once in three weeks - give them an advantage? Shai Bolton, Tyson Stengle and Sam Lloyd are on fire in the reserves while Jack Graham, Jason Castagna and VFL JJ Liston Trophy winner Jacob Townsend have been sitting idle. It would be incredibly harsh but as always, and with a Grand Final on offer, the team comes first.
BEN HIGGINS’S FORECAST: The Tiger Army already has sweaty palms and there’s still five days to go. Richmond hasn’t been in this position often in the past 30 years and would have been confident after its qualifying final win. However, the Giants’ semi-final steamrolling of West Coast might see some doubts start to creep in. The tale of the tape should be confidence building with a heart-breaking, last-gasp loss at Spotless Stadium in Round 9 before a dour 19-point win at the MCG in Round 18.

In the Mix - Preliminary Final
Nathan Schmook

RICHMOND
The Tigers' charge towards the VFL Grand Final has kept a number of fringe senior players in the frame for AFL selection with performances that can't be ignored.
The small forward positions are under the microscope, with Sam Lloyd (30 possessions in the VFL) continuing a strong run of form that included a 48-possession, four-goal effort three weeks ago. The speed and goal sense of Shai Bolton remains appealing, but it would be a bold move for the Tigers to change their forward mix at this stage.
Half-back Oleg Markov (26 possessions and a goal in the VFL) was the last player dropped to make way for Josh Caddy and he would be selected if the Tigers decided they needed more run against the Giants.
Clearance specialist Anthony Miles (34 possessions) has been a ball-magnet at VFL level since his last senior game in round 20 and is available if centre-square reinforcements are needed.

Tigers face stick-or-twist selection dilemma
afl.com.au
20 September 2017
RICHMOND will have a selection decision to ponder ahead of the preliminary final against Greater Western Sydney.
The Tigers will need to weigh up whether to take an unchanged line-up into the game for the fourth time this season or throw a selection curveball at the Giants by picking first-year player Shai Bolton.
Broad shoulders injury woes and earns new deal
However, any discussion on whether Bolton could replace Jason Castagna or Jacob Townsend should be short and swift.
Castagna, Dan Butler and Dan Rioli have formed the AFL's best three-piece band in 2017, with each laying between 70-75 tackles this season and kicking between 20 and 27 goals.
Their work together has been reminiscent of Hawthorn's forward trio of Luke Breust, Paul Puopolo and Cyril Rioli during the Hawks' three-peat of premierships between 2013-2015.
Despite that, the Tigers are likely to consider the pace and clean hands of first-year speedster Bolton as he has been in good form in the VFL, kicking at least two goals a game at that level.
Bolton is raw and his selection would be a huge gamble given he has played just six games, laying 15 tackles and kicking three goals in that time.
His most recent AFL game was in round 19 when the Tigers defeated Gold Coast, and although he is clever, the coaches would not be entirely sure he would provide what was needed.
Forwards Castagna and Townsend have incentive to perform well in the preliminary final if they want to be guaranteed a Grand Final spot.
Townsend burst onto the scene in round 22 kicking 11 goals in the final two games.
He kicked just two goals in the qualifying final from three disposals but made a significant contribution as he subdued Lachie Henderson, restricting the Cat's ability to take marks and spoil as the third man across.
Townsend wins contested ball inside 50 and can play either a negative or attacking role, so he keeps his spot.
Castagna is one of nine Tigers to play every game in 2017 but he battled for touch in the qualifying final.
He still laid four tackles and kicked a goal, with the response to his major – his first since round 19 – showing how valuable his teammates regard his contribution.
He also performed exceptionally well against Greater Western Sydney at the MCG in round 18, laying nine tackles (eight in the second half) and kicking a goal.
That should give the out-of-contract 21-year-old confidence ahead of the biggest game of his career.
He knows the Tigers' system better than Bolton and is part of a forward group that has got the job done defensively all season.
Castagna therefore deserves his spot and the chance to cash in on the experience gained in the first final.
The Tigers are in the preliminary final for a reason, having kept the faith all season with their method and personnel.
Now is not the time to blink.

Bolter Bolton? Speedster 'a level above' in VFL
afl.com.au
20 September 2017
EXCITING Richmond forward Shai Bolton has played "above the level" for the past month and could easily slot into the senior side if called upon for Saturday's preliminary final against Greater Western Sydney, VFL coach Craig McRae says.
Bolton was taken with the No.29 selection in last year's NAB AFL Draft and has lined up in six matches since making his debut in round nine.
He played five consecutive games before being dropped, and most recently played in the round 19 win against Gold Coast.
Fellow small forward Jason Castagna has played in every match this season in Damien Hardwick's team, but had just six disposals in the qualifying final against Geelong, and often fumbled when he had a chance to win the footy.
However, his defensive pressure has won him plaudits.
McRae told reporters on Wednesday that Bolton had been in exceptional form in the lead-up to Sunday's VFL Grand Final.
"He's had an outstanding month. His defensive stuff is really stacking up and I think he's really matured in the 12 months he's been with us. He's still only 18 years old, and he's a young player on the rise," McRae said.
Despite Bolton's inexperience, McRae expected the West Australian could make the adjustment.
"You'd hope to think so. We talk about playing above the level at VFL for our AFL players, and he's had a month where he's played above the level," McRae said.

Who's out? Selection puzzlers for the prelims
Dinny Navaratnam
afl.com.au
21 September 2017
RICHMOND
Injuries: Nathan Drummond (knee)
Under the pump: Forwards Jason Castagna and Jacob Townsend. Castagna's inability to find the ball is balanced by his hardness and pressure, while Townsend has been prolific, with 13 goals from just three games (and 31 disposals). Do they win the ball enough?
In the frame: Shai Bolton and Tyson Stengle have been performing in the Tigers' run to the VFL Grand Final.
Verdict: Castagna fumbled seemingly every time he touched the footy in the qualifying final and has had seven kicks in his past four games, but his pressure is the reason he gets a game. Bolton has pressed for selection though after what VFL coach Craig McRae called an "outstanding" month. After booting 11 goals in two matches leading up to the finals, Townsend had just three disposals against Geelong, although two of those were goals. It's hard to change a winning team, especially one that won as convincingly as Richmond did last start, so don't expect any changes.
