I can confirm that Nathan Brown played half a game for Coburg this afternoon against Nth Ballarat and got through ok.

I have been told that he kicked one goal and found the footy well. :thumbsup

This is fantastic news.
Title: Browny is back

Played a half for Coburg today out of a forward pocket. I had to leave at half-time so he may play out the game as he looked fine although a bit rusty. Kicked a goal.

No 8 in fact Bully (sorry should of read this thread first). Yep great news.

Half-time score

Coburg    2.1   4.1-25
Roos       8.2    10.5-65

Goals: Limbach, Hughes, Browny, didn't see the other one,

8. Browny
14. Polo
22. Meyer
39. Mcguane
12. Graham
30. Tivs
34. Hughes
19. Limbach

Wallace, Royal, Kingy and Patto were there watching.

Got pumped inthe first quarter through lack of pressure and body strength. Rocca was playing on a skinny kid. Much more committed effort in the second.

yeah this is the game that was listed on the Rookie Club newsletter as being on tomorrow :banghead :banghead but that's another story :rollin

There is an article about Coburg in this week Inside Football - they've recruited alot of young blokes from the TAC comp that didn't get drafted. They will have one of the youngest lists in the VFL (bit like 2005 ;)). Andy Collins is hopeful that out of this young group theremaybe a couple of draftees in 2006

Patto was in casuals watching so he'll be there Saturday night. There were no teamsheets so I didn't have a clue who most of the Coburg players were except Hurst and Strachan were playing.

Graham did fairly well in the ruck and was playing a followers role running all over the ground. Very disciplined with the 1%ers which was pleasing to see from a young player. There's definitely potential there although he's raw.

Polo was handy at the centre bounces and had a fair bit of it. Read the footy beautifully off one tap but got tackled just as he tried to kicked.

Tivs was everywhere in the second quarter. His run through the midfield straightened Coburg up as they were all over the place in the first.

Browny got into the game better as it went. A bit rusty as his first kick was a turnover :ssh and he ran under the ball once or twice but he was running around perfectly with no sign of discomfort or hinderance from his leg :thumbsup. His goal was a snap that bounced in the goalsquare and was shepharded through.

McGaune was moved onto Sav in the second quarter and kept him quiet after Sav kicked a few in the first. The young kid on Sav in the first quarter got told off by Andy Collins for wearing the wrong footwear as he kept slipping over.

Hughes was told to present himself more by Collins in the huddle which he did well afterwards with a mark on the lead and goal. A Roos supporter on the North board on BF gave Hughesy a good wrap -
Quote
Perry - Got a towelling from Cleve Hughes of Richmond, who by the way is an excellent prospect for the Tiges. Not sure if Perry is carrying something but he lacked a bit pace, Hughes got him out almost every time on the lead, bit of a worry to be honest.

Meyer and Limbach were ok.

Brown's half-game AFL comeback a success
The Age
February 23, 2006 - 8:05PM

Richmond forward Nathan Brown has reached an encouraging milestone in his AFL comeback, playing half a practice match with no apparent trouble.

It was Brown's first competitive hitout since the sickening round-10 injury last year that seriously damaged his right leg.

The two-time All-Australian forward, one of the Tigers' most important players, turned out for their reserve side Coburg in a trial match against the Kangaroos seconds at Optus Oval.

Provided Brown pulls up well in the next day or so, Richmond is confident the hitout confirms he is on track for a round-one return.

"He was keen to play a bit more, but it was always our plan for him just to play a half," said Richmond football manager Paul Armstrong.

"Nathan was pleased to get through it, it went well and he's pulled up okay.

"The aim has always been for him to return in round one and at the moment, he's on the schedule we've set.

"Nothing has held him back so far, fingers crossed."

Brown needed two screws inserted in his right leg after he suffered a double break at Telstra Dome in a Friday-night match against Melbourne.

Demons defender Matthew Whelan had fallen across Brown's leg while trying to smother a kick.

Meanwhile, the AFL's rules changes continue to generate concerns among players on the eve of the NAB Cup pre-season competition.

Respected Collingwood defender James Clement, a two-time All-Australian, said the league might have created "a monster".

The rule changes are designed to encourage a more continuous and open playing style.

"The speed (of the game) has gotten to a stage where it's almost ridiculous and you've got to start questioning how fast the game can get," Clement said.

"Once again they (the AFL) have tinkered with the game and they might have created a monster."

Richmond captain Kane Johnson also had his concerns, saying: "It's going to cause a very uncontested game of football.

"You're not going to have control over your opponent because of these new rules.

"I'm not convinced of the new rules as yet, but I think it's going to be bloody hard work for the players that are out there."

Hawks skipper Richie Vandenberg agreed that the changes meant players would have less rest time on the field during play.

The NAB Cup opens on Friday night with the Western Bulldogs hosting Melbourne in Darwin and Brisbane playing Essendon at Carrara on the Gold Coast.

Nathan Brown returns to footy field

Herald Sun

THE kicks lacked the usual penetration and the ball didn't follow him as it normally would, but it mattered little for Nathan Brown last night – he was back playing competitive football.

Brown's comeback, in a practice match for Richmond's reserves at Princes Park, put him ahead of schedule in his plan to be ready for Round 1. Nine months after snapping his right leg in one of football's most horrific incidents, Brown, with a 32cm titanium rod supporting his leg, had half a dozen kicks, a couple of handballs and a goal against the Kangaroos reserves.

He played the first half, and had showered and left the ground by early in the third quarter.

"It feels good. I could probably have played another two quarters but they didn't want me to," Brown said after his hitout.

"I asked them (at halftime), but they said, `No'. I still have a bit of fitness work to do and I didn't touch it too many times out there today."

"It was good to have a run and a kick and it felt good to be out there, but I've still got some work to do . . . looking to Round 1 now," Brown said.

From the moment Brown was carried off Telstra Dome on May 27 last year, the tibia and fibula bones in his right leg shattered, he set himself for a Round 1 2006 return.

Despite mental and physical setbacks along the way, he never deviated from his plan and there was a hint of pride after last night's hitout.

"I got told a few times I probably wouldn't make Round 1. I'm still a month away from Round 1 and I'm playing footy, so it's satisfying," he said.

Provided the Tigers defeat Hawthorn at Telstra Dome tomorrow, and then secure at least one more win in the knockout pre-season series, Brown will aim for a senior return in the NAB Cup.

"Hope so. I don't want to play too many games in the twos," Brown said.

"Hopefully I'll get up there and hopefully (coach) Terry (Wallace) liked what he saw today and hopefully the boys have a good win on Saturday."

Brown's touches last night were mostly typically assured, but there were moments when his absence from the game and his lack of match fitness were evident.

"I was happy with it, though," Brown said.

"The kicking was good and the ball-handling was good. I was a bit apprehensive a couple of times but I will learn to get in to the cut and thrust of it again.

"Hopefully that all comes back and comes naturally and by Round 1 everything is back to normal.

"I think that will come back when I play a real game."

Yeah that's right Bull - confirmed in this weeks Inside Football.

They've lost a few other senior blokes as well. They will have a very young list at Coburg this season (like 2005). Fortunately, young Sylvestor (who was very unlucky not to be rookied by Richmond), Rimmington and Young all remain :thumbsup

Richmond star Nathan Brown took the next significant step on the comeback trail yesterday when he played half a VFL practice match for the Coburg Tigers against the Kangaroos reserves at Princes Park.

Brown, who snapped his right leg in an horrific incident during the Round 10 clash with Melbourne last year, played the first half of the practice match, gathering half a dozen kicks, firing out a couple of handballs, and kicking a goal.

More importantly, he had no problems with the leg.

"It feels really good now," Brown said after his recovery session at Punt Road this morning.

"I played two 20-minute quarters, so it wasn't a hell of a lot of footy - I've probably done more at training.

"But it felt good out there and I've pulled up very well.

"I didn't get too many touches, but the ones I did went okay.

So, I'd like to think that next time I'd get a few more touches and run around a bit more."

The 28-year-old veteran of 167 league games, at this stage isn't sure when or where he'll be playing next.

"I've got no idea what the plan is . . . whatever Terry tells me," he said.

BB has about half a dozen pics of the game. The 3rd, 4th and 5th ones show some Tigers (RFC players wore Richmond shorts and socks).

3rd - Howat, JON, Polo. Don't recognise who No. 4 is. He's tall but it doesn't look like Graham ???.
4th - White, Humm
5th - Howat, Humm and Patto?

Number 4 was Trent Knobel who captained the Burgers yesterday and played very well indeed

I actually went to the game but haven't been able to get near a computer (was out last night at a family party and family day today)

Game was scheduled to start at 3.00pm but the umpires had been told it was a 4.00pm start so it started late (3.20pm) after the umpires made a mad dash to the Whitten Construction site  ;D

The Coburg reserves played after the seniors - Angus Graham played for the Burger twos

Coburg played well but there were alot of turnovers from both teams when they over used the ball.

As for the other Richmond blokes who played for Coburg here's a summary of how I thought they went

4 - Trent Knobel - as I said captained the Burgers and was very impressive. Won the centre cirlce work easily and his efforts around the ground were good, took a few marks but created a lot of contests and fortunately had crumbers around him to clear the ball

8 - Tom Roach - again played in the back pocket. Was alot better than he has been but I think you have to remember this is a different level to AFL. His decision making was alot better when he took the first option

14 - Dean Polo - copped a nasty whack to the shoulder in the first 5 minutes of the game. Ran away from the trainers after saying he was fine, trainers and doctor ran after him  ;D and made him come off. A quarter time it looked serious as his shoulder was iced. Good news was he came back on mid way through the 2nd with his shoulder strapped. Played a good game - reminds alot of Shane Tuck the way he attacks the packs and gets in and gets the ball. Great by hand but needs to improve disposal by foot. Will play seniors in 2006 :thumbsup

19 - Dean Limbach - improving all the time. Very quick off the lead but dropped a few marks out in front that he should have taken. In those instances I thought he worried a little too much about how close his opponent was rather that just grabbing the ball. I thought his work rate in trying to keep the ball inside fifty was very good

22 - Danny Meyer - no doubting Danny's skill but I continue to worry about his body size. His opponent for most of the day was 186cm 97kg Richard Cole :o :o (I am sure that Cole is Rioli's apprentice they looked like bloody twins ;D) and although he beat Cole well in the speed stakes and when the ball was on the ground - big Cole brushed him off the ball a little to easily when Meyer tried to lay tackles

26 - Danile Jackson - was surprised to see Jacko running around for the Burgers. Played mainly across the half forward line. Solid but not outstanding. Dropped a few contested marks that I thought he should have taken but as I said solid.

29 - Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls - very good game by JON. Started at CHB on Joel Reynolds who tried to "rough him up" with a bit of push and shove before the first bounce - great to see JON didn't take a backward step and gave as good as he got. After playing only a half last week he played all of the first half and all but 10 minutes of the second. Was moved in to the centre in the third and fourth qtrs and was excellent. Reads the play very well and has lighting speed. On the whole his skills very very good, there was only a couple turnovers by foot. Very impressive :thumbsup

35 - Matthew White - I didn't notice White very much but when I did he looked good, good pace, good strength and despite his lack of height he actually looks strong in body size.

36 - Will Thursfield - solid in defence playing across the HB line. Certainly a defender, his disposal let him down at times

39 - Luke McGuane - the only things that let Luke down yesterday was bad decision making and bad disposal. Usually a bad decision led to the bad disposal. He seems to have the problem alot of our younger blokes do - he doesn't go with the first option and as a result gets himself into trouble. He got plenty of the ball but his disposal let him down

42 - Jeremy Humm - thought he was relatively quiet but when he got the ball he was super impressive. Actually showed he is more of an AFL footballer, that is he shows he can play at a higher level than VFL if that makes sense. Have no doubt that sometime in 2006 he will be promoted and play seniors

43 - Cameron Howat - kicked a nice goal in the first but after that I didn't notcie him at all.

Great stuff WP  :thumbsup. Good to hear Limbach continuing to come on up forward and JON finally over his groin troubles and starring. Meyer will be ok it'll just take time.

So that leaves Chaffs, Staff, Casserley and Moore as the only ones missing. Provided there's no mishaps at training (touchwood), we should have virtually a full list to choose from for round 1.

LOL @ Cole at 97kg  :o trying to emulate Rioli's fitness regime  :rollin.

Progress scores - 1/4 time

Coburg 1 point lol - and it was rushed.

Preston 4.2.26

Best players for us - Rodan

Preston hitting their targets inside 50 and we're just bombing in blindly.  Hughes full forward got three guys on him - trying but not hving much luck.

Patto at CHF but marking outside of range.

White - fwd pocket and Humm and Hyde in centre, but not doing much.

2nd qtr starting and Patto gone down forward with Hughes.

Not much happening, so can't give you much of clue what's happening - will get back to you later with a report from MT

having 3 guys on you wouldnt make it easy i would think. but is  there any chance that the 2 free players might actually get a brain and get out on there own and get the footy?

Preston 8.5.53
Coburg  1.2.8

Goalkicker - Ryan Hurst
Point lol - Rushed and could be King from Coburg

Best players this qtr - JON.  Playing back pocket /half back flank and moving into midfield.  One bit of play - he fell down and in the same motion he handballed to a passing player.  Apparently he looked good when he did that lol.  Had the ball about 7 or 8 times but first kick went out on the full.

Rodan all right again

Basically no run in the side and we're always under pressure.

We're winning clearances but we're not much with it.  Talls playing from behind and just not getting it.  Kicks are shti as well so not much hope there.

All the Preston goals came from play - no set shots. Key defenders are doing their job and it's their midfielders and such that are getting the goals.  So that's a positive i guess that our defenders are keeping their key fwds goalless.

No other positives from MT - says he's getting desperate to find something lol

Angus Graham will be playing for the reserves - that game should follow this one.

4 - Knobel
8 - Howat
18 - Rodan
26 - Patto
29 - Jon
31 - Hyde
34 - Hughes
35 - White
36 - Thursfield
38 - McGuane
42 - Humm

3/4 Time

Preston 10.8.68
Coburg 1.2.8

Same goalkickers as before  :rollin

Hyde was okay that quarter - drifted out in the last bit of the qtr.  For the first 15 minutes he was one that actually hit a target.

Field kicking disgraceful

Umpires shocking in their bias towards Preston.

MT in the 3/4 huddle - Andy Collins giving Hydey wraps - Patto went into the ruck that qtr and did okay.

Knobel could be injured as he's not out there.

The good news is we play Preston round one  :rollin

Final Scores:

Preston 13.12.90
Coburg   4.2.26

Goalkickers - Crouch, Rodan, Randello

Knobel slight knock to his left knee - took him off as a precaution - should be okay.

And then the phone dropped out lol

MT should be back at work soon to give a final summary.  I'm predicting it will be brief lol

What a shocker  :P. Although Barb (dressed in all red and white of Preston) was in full voice  :rollin.

If Coburg ranked higher than 15% kicking efficiency we would be lucky. We just never got any flow into our game as turnover after turnover just gave the ball straight back to Preston. When we did take a mark or get a free we just bombed it forward to the next contest like we were playing footy of 40 years ago.

Hard to find positives in such an insipid display but Hyde's second half was very good. It took him a while to get into the pace of the game but once he did he was a rare Tiger who could gain possession and use it properly. Ran his heart out today. Probably the only one who really deserves a spot in round one for Richmond.

Rodan was ok. He played on at all costs most of the time which we sometimes criticize but given the way Coburg was playing it was refreshing to see that. Main negative on D-Rod today was he chipped a few up and unders to teammates which allowed the opposition to get a fist.

Knobel was good in the ruck and enabled us to believe it or not get a clearance out of the centre. Problem was the next kick was ineffectual. As moi mentioned he went off with a knock to the side of his left knee/leg. The assitant coach of Coburg said it went "a bit numb" so they took him off as a precaution. Should be ok.

Howat - played in defence and I didn't notice him too much. Beaten by his opponent.

Patto - started at CHF then moved into the ruck after Knobel went off. Early on looked sluggish defensively and he had to push pass the centre circle to get a kick. Was caught behind a few times but the kicks forward were pathetic. Better in the ruck.

Oakley-Nicholls - had a good second quarter with 7-8 possies out of defence despite on mistake (OOF). Moved into the middle and did alright. Tried to run too far in the last quarter which forced him to dish off to a manned Hughes. He's bloody quick though.

Hughes - never got into the game. Not a day for playing forward for Coburg.

White - started in a FP before being moved into the centre and down back where he became more involved. By the end of the game I would of said he was one of our okays.

Humm - rarely sighted.

Mcguane and Thursfield. I watched our forwards today so didn't get a good view of these two down the other end. Will got told off by the bench once to find his man. Most of Preston's goals came from midfielders and snaps from small forwards so I wouldn't blame them.

The Burgers will prpbably have the youngest list of VFL players in 2006.

Of the 39 listed VFL players the oldest 3 are 23 y.o. :o

One of those 23 y.o - Travis Ronaldson is captain for 2006 with no vice captain but 5 other blokes in the leadership group

COBURG TIGERS ANNOUNCE NEW CAPTAIN

Travis Ronaldson was last night named as the Coburg Tigers 2006 Captain at the Jumper Presentation held at Clipsal Australia.

Travis, who played for Tasmania last year is 22 years old, stands at 196 cm and weighs in at 98kgs.

”I have followed Travis’ career closely for a few years now,” admits coach Andy Collins, “and I’ve tried to get him to play for me for a while. When Travis called and explained that he wanted to return to Melbourne and play for Coburg, I was delighted.”

It was decided this year that rather than have vice-captains and deputy captains, a Leadership Group would be formed. The Group is made up of Travis, Eric Kuret, Vinnie Randello, Travis Jorgensen, Alister Neville and Paul Shelton.

“I left it up to the players to choose the group and I’m very happy with their choice”, explained Collins. “With such a young list, it’s important to have a group of experienced players who can show the boys what it’s all about. Over the summer I could see that Eric Kuret, Vinnie Randello and Travis Jorgensen were stand outs when it came to making the new guys feel comfortable. With the inclusion of Alister Neville, who I know from the Box Hill Hawks, and Paul Shelton who came across from Williamstown, I am confident that we have a bunch of blokes who can guide our younger players through the ranks of VFL footy”.

The Committee, Staff, Members and Volunteers congratulate Travis and the rest of the boys and wish the team well for the 2006 season.

The concern I have with this is will our guys development be slowed somewhat compared to if they were playing with another VFL team that had more mature bodies and experience to give structure to the side around them. I know it was only a practice match last Friday but Hughes isn't gunna have much luck if Coburg plays that kind of garbage most weeks.

Understand where you're coming from MT and to a degree I share your concerns but I  must say that I think Andy Collins has great reputation of developing young blokes and although it's a young list it doesn't just consist of just little blokes - they have a couple of bigger blokes (Robby Young for one) too. And at the moment we don't which senior tiger blokes maybe back there every week ;D

I also believe the plan in 2006  is for Tezza to go down to Burger land and take a session or 2 - so that's gotta be a help too :thumbsup

Title: RFC vs Coburg practice match
Post by: mightytiges on March 31, 2006, 05:36:33 PM
Friday 31st March 4.00 pm Coburg v RFC at Coburg City Oval

As mentioned in the other thread Hyde wasn't there. More a mixture of RFC and Coburg players rather than a set Richmond reserves side.

Tigers playing were:

Blacks: Chaffey, Thursfield, Roach, Graham, Howat, Hall, Jackson, Meyer, Limbach

Reds: Hughes, Hartigan, McGuane, Polo, Oakley-Nicholls.

Quarter time score - Reds 4.0-24 to Blacks 1.2-8. Stiff southerly breeze was the difference as the ball was being held up into the wind close to the Brunton end goals.

Match-ups: Hartigan (R) v Meyer (B), Roach (B) v Strachan, Jackson (B) v McGuane (R).

Roach was excellent. Running hard and using his brain. Jackson had the better of McGuane getting away on the lead up through the middle. Hartigan rebounded well out of defence. Chaffey was given a free reign by Collins in defence so he got a fair bit of it.

I have heard that Hartigan and Howat played well yesterday.

I only saw the first quarter bully so can't say. If Howat was good it must have been after quarter time after Collins got stuck into him a bit. He didn't do much in the first tern. Hartigan was the main rebounder out of defence for his side and did play well.

Just on Coburg - in this weeks Inside Football it confirms that Coburg and the RFC have signed at extension to their alignment agreement - goes for aonther 2 season after this one.
