The VFL team could be compromised against Port Melbourne on Sunday at Etihad Stadium if Richmond advances to Saturday week's AFL decider.
A six-day break between those two games meant it was likely some players would be on a minutes restriction.
There could be scenes reminiscent of 2014, when Hawthorn star Cyril Rioli returned from a three-month layoff after a hamstring injury, before sitting out the last quarter as Box Hill was overrun in the last term by Footscray.
McRae predicted "three or four" Tigers could be in that situation but he backed many more as being ready to step up if called upon, with 20 listed players expected to line up on Sunday.
"I'm certainly not naive enough to think that Saturday afternoon's (not) going to dictate a few things we do on Sunday. Who knows what's going to happen in that situation? We'll have players ready if that's the case," McRae said.
"I would've thought there's 10-12 players that would consider themselves ready to play AFL footy if the opportunity presents."
Having both teams performing so well late in the season is a boon for Richmond, which will be in its first Grand Final since being introduced into the VFL in 2014
"We're bouncing into work at the moment. There's good momentum at the footy club and I think everyone's really excited internally and externally about the Richmond footy club," McRae said.

VFL grand final 2017: Richmond and Port Melbourne square off
Paul Amy,
Port Phillip Leader/Herald-Sun
21 September 2017
MORE than a year on, Craig McRae remembers the loss acutely. It was accompanied by the beating of drums on the Frankston hill.
The Brisbane premiership star was three games into his role as Richmond’s VFL coach when the Tigers were toppled by the Dolphins.
It was Round 3 of 2016. Frankston failed to win a match in 2015; its most recent success had been in July, 2014.
“We did it!’’ timekeeper Michael Robinson fizzed on social media after the Dollies came from 29 points down at quarter time to win by 13.
McRae regards the match as a pivotal moment in Richmond’s rise in the VFL.
From defeat emerged a resolve to get better.
“It was their (Frankston’s) first win in, I’m not sure how long,’’ McRae was saying at the VFL grand final press conference at Carlton on Wednesday.
“I do remember that game vividly. It changed our culture. I remember the siren went and, you can imagine down at Frankston, the drums were beating and everyone’s going nuts …. and our guys went to ground and laid on the ground and it looked like we’d actually lost a grand final.
“It made me realise this group needs to build its own self-worth and understand it was a loss. It wasn’t a grand final loss and we’ve still got life in us.
“So it was a real opportunity and an experience that we went through that I’ve got no doubt started to make some shifts in how we behave, acting like winners when we lose.’’
By the end of the 2016 season Richmond had split its season at 9-9. Significantly, it won its last six matches.
This year the Tigers pushed into the top eight for the first time since cutting ties with Coburg at the end of the 2014, and bursts of goals were the bedrock of their victories over Casey Demons in the qualifying final and, last Saturday, Box Hill Hawks in the preliminary final.
The Tigers can score quickly. They can defend grimly. Form is on their side. And many fans are by their side.
Luck is also with them; there is hardly an injury at Tigerland and the selectors can choose up to 20 AFL players for the VFL decider.
“To be honest, for most of the year we’ve only had about 11 or 12 AFL players,’’ McRae said.
“We’re in a fortunate position at the moment with 19 available, actually 20 available this week, so the professionalism is there.’’
McRae was often spectacular around goals in the fabulous Brisbane teams for which he played 195 games.
But he’s been a steadying presence at Punt Rd as Richmond has shaken a reputation for being flaky, which came from modest 2014-15 seasons.
“He’s an unbelievable coach, but I think Craig’s two greatest strengths are his people management and how he is with us as people — he invests in us not just as footballers but people outside of the club — and then he coaches players to their strengths,’’ captain Sam Darley said of the coach whose heads spins to “Fly’’.
“I guess, as a kid, you get drafted or go through any sort of elite systems, you’re always told what you can’t do or things that you need to improve on.
‘Fly’s’ big message for us is, you’re here for a reason, you can play, it might be someone’s kick or their attack on the footy, and I guess he encourages us and puts us in positions to those (strengths).’’
McRae said Richmond had focused on “creating high standards’’, bringing in players with “the endeavour or the motivation to be hungry to improve’’ and developing “a real connection between the AFL and the VFL’’.
In Sunday’s grand final at Etihad Stadium, the Tigers meet Port Melbourne, which is playing its fourth decider under former Hawthorn champion and Geelong and Adelaide coach Gary Ayres.
Ayres is in his tenth year with the historic Borough, who on the eve of the season had cause to celebrate a Sam Newman putt on The Footy Show.
Port had revealed a loss of $300,000 at the AGM. Ayres said it had led to suggestions the club might not be able to field a team in 2017.

Because of his friendship with the legendary Borough spearhead Fred Cook, Newman offered to help with a membership drive. The putt was a gimmick but earned Port $10,000, which as Ayres said is better than a boot up the backside.
The players and coaching staff were asked to take pay cuts. As a compromise they decided to forego their match payments for Round 1.
Captain Toby Pinwill said the club’s shaky financial position had more galvanised than demoralised the players.
“We thought, this is a real opportunity to show how much we’re behind the club and together as a group,’’ he said.
“Often from adversity you get your best growth and that was certainly the case early in the year.’’
Ayres agreed. “They’ve taken it as a positive rather than a negative. That’s been a real strength of the group this year … we’ve overcome a fair bit …. we’ve got some momentum out of it as well.’’
Pinwill played his 200th senior game for Port late in the season and is one of the few VFL players whose reputation extends beyond the competition.
Some of it comes from his liking for a scrap. Infamy fell on him some years ago when he was red-carded out of a final for being reported twice in a quarter.
Two weeks ago in the semi-final he did a beeline for Bulldog Tom Boyd, tangling with a group of Footscray players at quarter time (and he is a diehard Western Bulldogs supporter!). The VFL wasn’t amused.
But he has the finesse to match his fire and desire. Pinwill was best-afield in the grand final in 2011. As he’s often cracked to his mates, only good players win the Norm Goss Medal.
The Borough were bounced out of an elimination final last year but despite their financial woes recruited ex-St Kilda pair Eli Templeton and Brodie Murdoch and former Carlton flanker Dillon Viojo-Rainbow.
Robin Nahas returned from the AFL and Williamstown premiership players Dylan Conway and Anthony Anastasio crossed the bridge after feeling unwanted by the Towners.
The newcomers have blended with stalwarts Pinwill, Chris Cain, Sam Dwyer, Hugh Sandilands, Tom O’Sullivan, Jordan Lisle and Damian Mascitti.
The grand final teams met once this season, in Round 3, when Port achieved a 30-point victory at North Port Oval.
Sunday’s match at Etihad will start at 3pm.
It will be preceded by the VFL Women’s grand final between Diamond Creek and Darebin Falcons at 12pm and followed by the TAC Cup decider between Geelong Falcons and Sandringham Dragons at 7.35pm.

Port Melb. 2.2 3.5-23
Goals: Bolton 2, Griffiths.
Our forward line is breaking down with our talls unsighted (Moore and Chol have done nothing) but our defence is holding up.
We've also been sloppy and chosen the wrong option when we break out of Port's forward line.
Port are winning the 50/50 contests in the midfield and hurting us on the outside.
Hampson is dominating the ruck but we're getting no advantage with his tapwork.

Gary Ayres a master coach. They are certainly well drilled.

Don't think it woulda made a diff but yep.

Coughed that up; that's for sure.
-
The Chol shank 25 metres out very costly, him and Georgie both exponents of the most horrendous clanger kicks at the club.
-
trampoline hands Hammer, turnover, port goal :-[
Talk about momentum killer
-
Lennon had a chance to make a name for himself. poo happens. how many afl listed players did we have ? really shouldve won
Should have nailed it
-
The Chol shank 25 metres out very costly, him and Georgie both exponents of the most horrendous clanger kicks at the club.
Try 15 metres out. Top of the goalsquare and missed everything.
-
Aside from Griffs, our other tall forwards were useless today. Chol and Moore might as well not have turned up. Ivan as we know is finishing up. Hampson back to grabbing thin air in the last quarter. They were a liability today and Port Melbourne just ran it out of our forward line at will.
That's why we play smalls around Jack at AFL level.
In any case, we were sloppy all day. Explains why most of our more experienced AFL listed players at this level are playing VFL. If we were cleaner and showed more composure going inside F50 and for some effort inside F50 as well as not shanking set shots then we would've should've could've won.
-
Port wanted it more and deserved the win Their resilience is incredible.
In the end I think they were cleaner with their skills.
Griffiths is still a big mummy's girl he really should be playing soccer.
Lennon was useless most of the game although our forward entries were rubbish compared to Port.
I think our players should be disappointed in that they are full time professional players and lost to a bunch of part timers that had the heart to win at all costs and never give up.
-
This was a game for Miles to step up he was missing big time considering he may have a chance to come in.
-
lmao the pricks booing Nahas when he received his premiership medallion
-
Lennon is lazy bigtime cost us goals not chasing and doing defensive stuff.
-
Love the development of Bolton, Garthwaite and Stengle. Even Moore has come a long way.
Another preseason and they will be better.
I heard that they will re-rookie Child.
-
Who is Child?
-
Love Child, has taken over from Morris.
-
The Norm Goss Medal winner, from @RichmondVFL Sam Lloyd with a 35 disposal game, 9 tackles and 10 clearances.

-
I thought McRae coached badly in the last quarter. They had 8 defenders and ran off half back at will. He failed to stop it and thats why we lost the game. It was that simple. We would win it out of the middle but they would out number us accross half back and go coast to coast....
-
Who is Child?
Chol.
Sorry was on my phone and did not notice the autocorrect.
-
Just got home from the game and thought I'd share my immediate thoughts:
Shaun :banghead stuffing :banghead Hamspud :banghead
That is all.
-
Sounds like they muffed certain victory .
-
Went today, still buzzing.
Was a fair drop in standard from AFL prelim.
Ellis and Short were great all game. Bolton was electrifying. Lloyd got a lot of it but didn't think he was too damaging. Menadue good 2nd half.
Apart from that hmm.
Griffiths is finished. Went off twice 'sore' and looked done for day only to come back fine. Rest pretty ordinary.
That little number 19 for PM was unreal. Rookie him.
-
Just got home from the game and thought I'd share my immediate thoughts:
Shaun :banghead stuffing :banghead Hamspud :banghead

dropped fresh air chest mark.
and then....
trampoline hands, turnaround goal
piece of poo
-
Really disappointing effort
Should not have lost that game
No one on the edge of the AFL side did anything to warrant selection for the GF
Was so disappointed with so many just not worth going through them. One positive is there are some we will never see in a RFC jumper again
As for Hampson, fluffing simple uncontested marks in the last when the game's on the line should be enough to ensure he doesnt get a look in next week
It was disgraceful
-
So Lennon muffed the last shot on goal to lose the game after the siren I hear? Was it a tough shot or a soda? He looks like he has bulked up a bit, is he looking like he might of turned his poo around or is he still soft as a freshly pinched loaf
-

It was a set shot from beyond 50. He actually made the distance but it went to the right and missed. You can't blame him for that miss but his whole game was poor likely many of his teammates. That kick will be his last in yellow and black.

Heartbreak for VFL Tigers
richmondfc.com.au
24 September 2017
The VFL Tigers endured a heartbreaking end to the 2017 season on Sunday, going down to Port Melbourne by four points in the VFL Grand Final.
In a match that see-sawed all day long, the VFL Tigers held a 13-point lead midway through the final term, but the Borough managed to fight back and take the lead as the clock ticked down.
The pressure then came to a crescendo when Ben Lennon marked outside 50, and the siren blew with Port Melbourne five points ahead.
Lennon’s effort faded right at the eleventh hour, with the result falling Port Melbourne's way.
Not all Tigers went without reward, however, with Sam Lloyd winning the Norm Goss Memorial Medal thanks to a 35 disposal, 10 clearances, nine tackle and one-goal performance.
Lloyd gave credit to the victorious Borough, while acknowledging the efforts of his teammates throughout a tumultuous season.
“To Port Melbourne, fantastic game boys, you really deserve it,” Lloyd said.
“To our boys, we tried our hardest...
“To our supporters and the seniors, thanks for coming to support us.”
Riding the wave of momentum of the AFL side’s preliminary final win on Saturday, the VFL Tigers came flying out of the gates in the first quarter, and were buoyed by a star showing from Shai Bolton.
The speedster was on hand to nail the game’s first goal after being found by Callum Moore, and added one more seconds later after bursting out from the centre and kicking truly from outside the arc.
After Port answered back quickly, Bolton added one more party-piece to end the quarter, shimmying his way around a Port defender on a tight angle and centering the ball for Ben Griffiths, who converted from close range.
However, even with a strong first quarter showing under their belt, the VFL Tigers had to defend valiantly throughout the second quarter as the Borough starting piling on the pressure.
Batchelor and Ryan Garthwaite were working overtime, repelling wave after wave of attack, receiving ample support from Reece Conca and a resurgent Corey Ellis.
Griffiths and Bolton were trying to increase the scoreboard pressure at the other end, however, an inspired Port defence managed to keep the VFL Tigers goalless throughout the quarter.
Shaun Hampson continued to boast aerial dominance throughout the game, taking a series of marks around the ground and providing a target for the side’s disposal experts.
Knowing Port would again attack the contest with ferocity in the third stanza, Connor Menadue bought his best to the fore, nailing two goals in an attempt to win some much-needed breathing space.
However, Port simply wouldn’t go away, and managed to keep themselves in the game by three-quarter time, trailing by only two points.
In a final term that reflected the intensity of the match, Lloyd kicked his first of the day with a monstrous effort from beyond the arc, before Lennon mirrored his efforts with a composed set shot from similar range.
After Port answered back again, Lloyd worked hard to create a turnover in Port’s defensive 50, Shaun Mannagh making the most of the chance with a crafty snap and goal.
However, three quick-fire goals to the Borough turned the match on it’s head, and suddenly, the VFL Tigers faced a difficult test to regain the ascendancy.
After relentless waves of attack, Lennon finally found himself with an opportunity from long range, and though the distance did not trouble the VFL Tigers’ leading goal kicker for 2017, the effort carried wide of the target, leaving the Tigers on the wrong side of a remarkable Grand Final.
Alongside Lloyd; Bolton, Hampson and Batchelor were among the finest performers for the VFL Tigers on the day.
Plaudits also went to Griffiths, who overcame an injury scare in the third quarter to finish as the side’s leading goal kicker with three majors.

Got to hand it to PM. Out coached McRae easily and they moved the ball out of our forward line easily all day. Our defence was terrific as was Hampson until late when he dropped 2 marks and cost them goals.

Forgotten Tiger puts hand up for GF call-up
afl.com.au
24 September 2017
FORGOTTEN Richmond forward Sam Lloyd is adamant he could contribute if he receives a shock call-up to the AFL side for the Grand Final, after winning the Norm Goss Medal for best afield in the VFL decider at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
Playing through the midfield in front of a 17,159-strong crowd, Lloyd racked up 35 disposals, 10 clearances and nine tackles.
His huge last term showed he could deliver under pressure, slotting a crucial goal, and setting up a couple of others – one with a spoil from a Port Melbourne kick-in and another by delivering the ball lace out for key forward Ben Griffiths.
The match itself was an amazing contest, with Port down by 13 points with just minutes remaining but eventually clawing back into the lead. The final siren went with the ball in Ben Lennon's hands and Richmond down by five points, but his shot from inside the centre square sailed wide, in what may be the out-of-contract former No.12 selection's last kick in the yellow and black.
Port Melbourne won the enthralling contest, 11.8 (74) to 10.10 (70).
A downcast Lloyd told reporters after the game his running had improved, allowing him to play as an onballer.
"My fitness levels have really improved the last couple of years and I've pinch-hit at times through there and if I got the opportunity, I'm sure I could do something in there," Lloyd said.
While the senior side is unlikely to make forced changes after two comprehensive finals victories, the availability of Brandon Ellis and Trent Cotchin is uncertain, with both set to be scrutinised by the Match Review Panel.
Ellis collected Greater Western Sydney midfielder Lachie Whitfield high in the last term while a hit from the captain on Dylan Shiel, that left the Giant with delayed concussion, will also be looked at.
"I've been pushing my hand up to get into the midfield in the AFL for a couple of years now but we've just got too many mids," Lloyd said.
Others to impress were Anthony Miles (24 disposals and seven clearances) and Corey Ellis (23 disposals), while Griffiths booted three goals and offered an aerial presence.
Electric small forward Shai Bolton started the game on fire with a couple of early goals and a goal assist, but he faded out of the contest.
Typically stationed in attack in the senior side, coach Damien Hardwick wanted Lloyd to develop his midfield skills in the VFL team, with an abundance of forwards at reserves level another reason the 27-year-old has been pushed up the ground.
"I would've thought he's been one of our better performed for the last month. He continued that," VFL coach Craig McRae said.
Lloyd finished with 50 disposals and four goals against Sandringham about a month ago.
He had a sore right thumb after the clash with Port Melbourne but said he would be fine for next Saturday's game at the MCG, in what would be his ninth AFL match of the season, and his first since the round 16 thumping at the hands of St Kilda.
It looms as a big few days for Lloyd, who will accompany Dustin Martin to the Brownlow Medal on Monday night.

I thought McRae coached badly in the last quarter. They had 8 defenders and ran off half back at will. He failed to stop it and thats why we lost the game. It was that simple. We would win it out of the middle but they would out number us accross half back and go coast to coast....
Having a half fit Griffiths back on was a liability also

Really disappointing effort
Should not have lost that game
No one on the edge of the AFL side did anything to warrant selection for the GF
Was so disappointed with so many just not worth going through them. One positive is there are some we will never see in a RFC jumper again
As for Hampson, fluffing simple uncontested marks in the last when the game's on the line should be enough to ensure he doesnt get a look in next week
It was disgraceful
Agree very disappointing loss.

pin it on Hampson.
-
Port were too good . Too quick

Regardless of the result can anyone advised how well we structured up.
Given we had the talls of Maric, Hampson, Chol, Griffiths and Moore, the smalls of Bolton and Stengle and the mediums of Lennon and Llyod I would have to assume that the paper team warriors would have been in raptures.

Can't you read Chucky? Three talls is the pefect premiership formula, not five..... :shh
Interesting to note that both our seniors and reserves struggled to defend the transition at Etihad this year..... :shh :shh

Whicjh is kind of baffling considering it has the exact same dimensions as PRO......

I believe it's no less than 193 but no greater than 200....unless they're ruckmen.....(https://imgfast.net/users/3115/50/25/04/smiles/533926.gif)

We were way too tall and slow up forward. They ran the ball out with ease. Could have went in with 2 less talls and been much better off

It has always been a confusing issue for me but what I have gleaned is 200cm+ is a guaranteed failure
