Four-time Carlton premiership player Wayne Johnston and Team of the Century member, Wayne Johnston, has increased his involvement with Richmond this year by becoming one of the team's match-day runners.

Johnston, a key Blues' premiership player in 1979, 1981, 1982 and 1987, will start his running duties with the Tigers when they take on Hawthorn in the opening round of the pre-season NAB Cup competition.

"Wayne has been helping us out as part of our TAFE (Tigers At Football Education) program, with his specialist area at the moment delivering the ball inside 50," said Richmond's Football Operations Manager Paul Armstrong.

"Terry (Wallace) just happened to ask him whether he'd be interested in having a more on-going involvement on match day as one of our runners.

"He went away to have a think about that and came back to say he'd be delighted to be involved.

"We think someone who's played in four premierships has got a lot to offer our group, and we're looking forward to his participation during the season.

"Dale Weightman was one of the two runners we've had over the past few years. But doing the work as a Player Welfare Manager, we see his role as off-field on match day to be educating the younger players, as well as communicating with their families and so forth.

"That's going to be Dale's role this year, while Wayne will do the on-field running."

Johnston, nicknamed 'The Dominator' during his playing days, carved out a brilliant league career of 209 games and 283 goals with Carlton from 1979-90.

Absolute champion player but I hated his guts as a kid because he played for Carlton lol. Remember him running off a HFF towards the Punt Road goals and kicking the sealer from about 40 out in the last quarter of the 82 GF  :(.

If he can help pass on to our young guys how he always starred on the big occasion then I won't be complaining.  I would have him up there with KB and Carey as one of the best big game players I've seen (I'm too young for Royce).

Blues legend joins Tigers as runner
By Samantha Lane
The Age

CARLTON team-of-the-century member Wayne Johnston will be Richmond's chief match-day runner this season.

Johnston, the Blues' best player in the 1982 win over Richmond, relayed information for his former rivals at the pre-season game against Hawthorn at Telstra Dome yesterday.

Johnston was offered the job after giving weekly lectures as part of Richmond's new education program, T@FE, on designated kicking. That was to be a six-week gig, but Tigers coach Terry Wallace approached him last week about an on-going commitment.

"I got a tap on the shoulder and got called into the boardroom, and I thought I was going to get the stuff actually!" Johnston said yesterday. "The next thing, they asked me would I be runner."

Johnston will also attend Richmond's weekly team meetings and continue his work with the T@FE program.

The Tigers' player development manager, Dale Weightman, was a runner last year, but he will now sit alongside the team's young players at matches.

"He's going to do off-field stuff with the players on match day, sit with them, watch how the seniors prepare and say to a kid, 'You might be here in two weeks' time, this is what we need you to do'," Richmond football manager Paul Armstrong said.

Tony Walsh was Richmond's other runner last year, but he has left the club.

Meanwhile, Francis Jackson has been appointed the club's full-time recruitment manager after assisting the department over the past year. The former Richmond and Swans defender, the long-time sports master at Brighton Grammar School, will assume the role in April.

Richmond's job for Johnston riles junior club
By Caroline Wilson
The Age
March 9, 2006

RICHMOND'S decision to appoint Wayne Johnston as its runner has provoked an angry response from a local junior football club that claims the former Carlton champion failed to honour a one-year deal as a junior development officer.

The South Melbourne Districts Sports Club unsuccessfully sued Johnston last year after he caused a mini financial crisis at the club, which lifted its annual junior subscription by $10 a player to accommodate the high-profile star, who was also working at the Sandringham Dragons.

The club, which fielded 10 junior teams in 2005, employed Johnston in November 2004 in a deal that was to have him attend training over the 2005 season on a semi-regular basis and oversee mentoring sessions with the club's junior coaches.

Johnston agreed to reduce his agreed fee of $6000 to $4500 if he was paid up front. Club president Maureen McGee told The Age that Johnston did not report to the club after March 2005 and attended only six sessions between November and March.

In an angry letter to Richmond chief executive Steve Wright, McGee wrote: "I am writing to express my dismay at the appointment of Wayne Johnston as your runner for this year.

"Mr Johnston was appointed the junior development officer of this club at the beginning of last year. The remuneration agreed on was $6000 but he offered to cut this back to $4500 if he was paid up front. As he was working for the Sandringham Dragons, we foolishly agreed to this - a bad move! He turned up a few times and was never seen again in spite of numerous phone calls by a member of our committee, who in fact was a QC . . .

". . . As I have been a member of the Richmond Football Club for 49 years and my mother and grandfather before me, the final straw was seeing him running for my beloved Tigers."

South Melbourne's claim against Johnston was heard in the Melbourne Magistrate's Court last December in an examination of judgement debtor. The court was told that Johnston was not in a financial position to repay the club.

Johnston did not return calls from The Age yesterday but said through an intermediary that he had had philosophical differences with the South Melbourne committee after the departure of the club president who employed him, Tony Pilimon, for Perth.

Johnston, 48, has reportedly told Pilimon he fell out with board member Chris Maxwell, formerly a Queen's Counsel, now a Supreme Court judge, who repeatedly tried to persuade him to attend coaching sessions and meetings.

The club lifted its annual subscription last year from $110 to $130 - $10 of which was to accommodate Johnston - a fee it has not increased this season, having employed a new lower-profile junior development officer.

The four-time Carlton premiership player, whose sons Tommy (under 18) and Clay (under 16) play for Sandringham, has also left that club, with the Dragons adhering to a policy of not employing coaches whose sons also played there.

Richmond Football Club was not prepared to comment yesterday, although the Tigers are believed to be aware of the dispute and do not see it as a barrier to Johnston being involved with the club this season.

Johnston to face old club

CARLTON legend Wayne Johnston says it's business as usual as he plots the downfall of his former club in his new role with Richmond.

Tonight's clash at the MCG will be the first time the man nicknamed "Dominator", will lock horns with the Blues who regard him as one of their all-time greats.

Johnston's presence in the yellow and black as a runner has certainly raised a few eyebrows at Carlton this week.

Yesterday his son Tomi, who could well be wearing a Blues guernsey next year under the father-son rule, underwent medical treatment at Carlton, but his father was told to keep his distance.

Tomi, 18, is captain of the Sandringham Dragons.

"It's all a bit of fun and I had a laugh about it when they said Tomi could have a medical check for some general soreness but told me to stay away," Johnston said.

"I think it was all tongue in cheek sort of stuff. I can't wait for Friday night and hopefully the Blues fans will be nice to me."

Apart from this week, Johnston still has close ties with the Blues. His employer, MC Labour Services, recently announced a sponsorship deal with Carlton.

The deal, involving the naming rights at Princes Park, was brokered by Johnston despite his new role at Richmond.

"It's like I'm split down the middle with my footy allegiances," he said.

"I have had to wear my business hat with MC Labour Services that I basically got to sponsor the Blues. But my football hat is all about Richmond at the moment and I'm loving being involved again with AFL football."

Johnston was thrilled this year when Richmond coach Terry Wallace jumped at the opportunity of having his experience and knowledge at Punt Road.

"Terry has been wonderful, as has the entire Richmond Football Club, who have made me feel so welcome," Johnston said. "It's one of those opportunities that came up and I'm really enjoying the club."

And the former Blues captain and premiership hero is hoping for a similar reception tomorrow night from Carlton as the one he received at the Gabba last weekend.

Johnston, who lived in Brisbane for 10 years and became friends with several Lions players, said he had some good-natured banter at the Gabba involving the opposition.

"A few of the Lions said g'day during the game and Jonathan Brown actually gave me a tap on the tummy," Johnston said.

"It was played in the spirit that footy should be played in. I actually probably know more Brisbane players than the Carlton boys. The only one that I know well is `Kouta' and I'll say g'day to him if I get the opportunity."

It will be unusual for the Blues' faithful watching Johnston run for the Tigers tonight.

His children have also warned him that if the Tigers win, they will be offended if he belts out the yellow and black's famous song.

"They were watching the TV last Saturday night when we beat Brisbane wondering if I'd be singing the Richmond song," Johnston laughed.

"They were right on to me and expressed their satisfaction that they didn't spot me in the rooms after the game. I had to come clean with them that I did sing it in the background."
