AFL draft best, worst picks: Every club’s draft history reviewed

Throw a blanket over the 2006, ‘07 and ‘09 drafts that were the source of a premiership nucleus. In 09 the Tigers used pick 3 on Dustin Martin and picked up David Astbury at pick 35, 2007 brought superstars Trent Cotchin (pick 2) and Alex Rance (18) but 2006 might win for overall Grand Final impact. Richmond used its first selection (pick 13) on Jack Riewoldt and pick 26 on September specialist Shane Edwards. Add to that pair pick 73 Andy Collins, who played only 25 games but he was traded to Carlton in a straight swap for Shaun Grigg, who has played 147 games for the Tigers and was also in the best on Grand Final day.
WORST
No shortage of candidates here, too. In 1999 the Tigers traded up the order to get pick 3, then famously overlooked Matthew Pavlich in favour of Aaron Fiora. Subsequent picks Ezra Poyas, Scott Homewood and Andrew Mills delivered little, with Ty Zantuck decent value at pick 78. The 2005 draft was a complete write-off — Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls, Cleve Hughes and Travis Casserly were all misses. But the title has to go to 2004 when the Tigers picked a bad year to make their big draft play, securing five selections in the top 20 and using them on one star (Brett Deledio) and four fails (Richard Tambling, Danny Meyer, Adam Pattison and Dean Polo), then taking Luke McGuane, Dean Limbach and ex-Hawk Mark Graham with later picks. Note: Using pick 1 on dud South Australian ruckman Richard Lounder in 1987 has brought decades of derision but the Tigers selected Tasmanian Brendon Gale with pick 27 that year. He played 244 games and later as CEO turned the club around and laid the foundations for a breakthrough premiership. So we’re reclassifying that draft as a big win.

Hmm it's hard to believe this premiership was planned 10 years ago from the 2006 draft. Dimma just inherited some good players like every new coach does and added some in his time.

They ought to compare bad drafting periods by Richmond with Melbourne. They had like 10 top 10 picks and screwed them all up. I'd have to look up the exact number.

2014 draft has been huge for us, no superstars (yet) but from pick 67 onwards:

That's value, and C. Ellis showed better signs in the back end of the year, as did Menadue.

and that is why I despise that club and its supporters above all others. They have been able to go to the well with bluechip picks time and time again. Even when they lost scully they got 2 x 1st rounders as comp so were able to cover that. Frawley comp they got pick 3 to go with their pick 2. lol
2012 they swapped pick 3 for pick 4 with GWS to land Hogan in the mini draft, which gave GWS the first 3 picks in the draft. There was an "understanding" between the clubs that GWS wouldnt bid on Viney(he was touted a top 3 pick) so that Melbourne could then use pick 4 on another player and get a free hit by picking up Viney, a top 3 pick, with a 2nd round pick. However, the karma bus smashed melbourne again(just like it did with Scully/Trngrove) as they passed on Wines, Vineys best mate and picked up toumpas. Stuff em absolute poostain of a club.

Its all sympathy and roses when that club put themselves in a hole so deep that even we were chuckling at them.
Meanwhile the AFL would have been happy for us to fold; Fitzroy says hello....
