Title: Preseason so far
Post by: mightytiges on March 06, 2006, 09:28:03 AM
Preseason results are fairly meaningless but what do you guys think we can take out of the preseason so far for round 1?

we need momentum and that winning feeling. last yr it worked bar 4 round 1. we lost th efirst wiz game, then we beat the bombers, freo and lions, entered the season with confidence and a winning feeling.! thats what we need

I think we are using it this year the way it should be, that is getting game time into players that need it, working on and fine tuning the game plan as well as giving the kids a chance to play with the senior blokes.

From a membership perspective the NAB cup is important but from a season planning point of view it doesn't matter too much IMO

There are a few positives and some other things to take from the pre season so far.

Last pre season we were about 4 weeks ahead of where we are this time round.  But it sounds as though players’ fitness base is better going into this season.  Hopefully the skill level will improve, as players’ confidence and form picks up.

So far, no one seems to have gone backwards in any way, which is a plus. :rollin

The form of Raines and Schulz, especially, and also Tambling, seems promising and will hopefully put pressure on other players for a spot in the side, as early as round 1.  And P. Bowden will no doubt take a spot.

There aren't too many who could put pressure on senior players for a regular spot in the team.  Most others seem to have a few more pre seasons to go before they can compete for a regular senior berth.

Browny is coming along ok, touch wood (not that I’m superstitious or anything, just don’t believe in tempting fate).  Hopefully he will play round 1. :thumbsup

Judging by last season, we can be competitive against most teams, if we stay injury free, but going by the pre season so far, our depth will still be an issue for a few more seasons to come yet.

Looking forward to the season and how much difference 2 pre seasons under TW makes.

Preseason is just that  preseason. its the time when we tinker and test, trial and experiment, give the young fellas a taste and remind the up and comings of where they need to be. the coach is a very astute man and he has used it wisely, the boys will all benefit from what has been done so far and in the next couple of weeks we will see some definites unfolding.
home and away is where the rubber meets the road and i reckon we will be  in the mix, team is a keyword  and we as supporters need to keep on seeing the positives 06 will be an improvement on 05 just as it was on 04   imagine where we could be by 08/09

This preseason is deja vu to last year. A close loss in the Wizz/NAB Cup followed by 2 good wins in the regional games. Let's hope we turn up in round 1 this time around ;).

We will rest a few next week IMO.

More or less our best team was out there last night (I was a little sad I didn't get to see any of the kids).

Cogs, Newman, Lids and Tuck could probably all be rested. Richo maybe but Brownie will play for the run.

I closed my eyes a couple of times he went for the ball last night, trust me he wasn't tentitive.

Patto may get a bench role for round one as he is more useful than Knobel.

I thought they were gonna field full sides for the Mildura game...

That's what I thought fwoy not only because the game is a show of support but it's the last(?) practice game before the start of the season. Still you would reckon Rodan and Razor will get a run so a couple who played at Carrara might get a rest. Maybe as HT suggested we rest Lids and Tuck as they've played every preseason game so far IIRC.

Raines has been consistently good over the preseason praccy matches. Whats the mail on Lids, haven't seen him in the goals or bests since that NAB match against the Dawks.

I'd say solid in that he hasn't torn a game apart but everything he does is classy. It's amazing he was able to just get up from that head-on collision with Fosdike after seeing it on tv.

Don't worry Lids was very classy on Saturday night.

The guy knows when to go hard (ie when there is a loose ball and you want to decapitate an opposition player) and when to conserve energy. The AFL season has not started yet.

That hit was on TV MT?

Yep. There was a 15 second grap of the game on both Sports Tonight on Ch 10 and Ch 7 news in Melbourne last night (Sunday). Both showed the collision between Lids and Fosdike  :o.

I think it was Lids in that collision not Raines

Two good wins that were a fairly high standard for this time of year with even Wallace saying after the game yesterday that the Swans game at Carrara was probably the best we've played under him and two absolute shockers that showed us at our bumbling worst! A good time to remember to be skeptical of preseason results. Which is the real Tigers ???.

Hopefully the loss and the lack of intensity we showed will have us switched on against the bullies. Last year we didn't give a yelp against the pussy cats in round 1 despite 3 straight wins in the practice matches.

the 'down to earther" they got yesterday might put them in a proper frame of mind for the opening. They should know just where they are 'at'

Rainesy put in another good performance  :thumbsup

Finally relieved that Lids is back in the bests list

After hearing what happened to Jesse Smith, Richard Hadley plus Ling and James Kelly last night, I'm just happy we got through the pre-season games without any serious injuries.
