Match preview: Collingwood v Richmond

SUMMARY
It's an AFL dream: Collingwood and Richmond firing and facing off in front of a packed house at the MCG. The Tigers are atop the AFL ladder for the first time in a home and away season since 1995, and if they win this one they'll have claimed a club record of 12 successive victories at the MCG, passing a record set in 1974-75. The AFL's pressure kings will subject the handball-happy Magpies to their sternest test yet. The Pies have also won their past three games, and have claimed the scalps of Adelaide and Essendon in the past fortnight, to rocket into fifth spot. The midfield battle is mouth-watering – Dustin Martin, Trent Cotchin and co. versus Scott Pendlebury, Steele Sidebottom and Adam Treloar. Raw Pies big man Mason Cox has found some form and might well ask questions of Alex Rance and David Astbury.
WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Sunday, April 29, 3.20pm AEST
LAST FIVE TIMES
R2, 2017, Richmond 14.15 (99) d Collingwood 11.14 (80) at the MCG
R20, 2016, Richmond 14.8 (92) d Collingwood 11.11 (77) at the MCG
R2, 2016, Collingwood 13.9 (87) d Richmond 12.14 (86) at the MCG
R21, 2015, Richmond 23.9 (147) d Collingwood 7.14 (56) at the MCG
R7, 2015, Richmond 16.9 (105) d Collingwood 15.10 (100) at the MCG
THE SIX POINTS
1. The victor will take extra bragging rights, given this will be their 71st clash at the MCG and the ledger is all square at 35 apiece.
2. Richmond has won four of its past five games against Collingwood. In this period the only margin above 19 points was the Tigers' 91-point victory in round 21, 2015.
3. Collingwood is aiming to post four consecutive wins for the first time since round 11, 2015. In the Pies' most recent games against Adelaide and Essendon, they tallied a combined 30 goals while holding their opponents to just 16 goals.
4. The Tigers' past fortnight has also been dominant, increasing their percentage from 100.9 per cent to 137.8 per cent after tallying 31 goals to 10 against Brisbane and Melbourne.
5. Both teams create many scoring opportunities, with the Tigers equal best for forward entries (57.6 a game) and the Magpies sixth (55.4).
6. According to the Schick Hydro Player Ratings, Collingwood boasts more star quality. Six Magpies are among the top 65 players compared to Richmond's four.
IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR …
Adam Treloar won the Anzac Day Medal and he'll be pumped up to produce a decent encore performance against Richmond. Treloar will perhaps never live down revealing he chose to join Collingwood over Richmond because he felt the Pies were closer to a premiership. This will be the first time the two clubs have met since the Tigers won their drought-breaking flag. Last time they met, Treloar was best-afield with 35 touches and two goals in a losing side.
PREDICTION: Richmond by 19 points

Schick Hydro Player Ratings = OMG Puhleez
-
Geez, I'd love it if we put them back in their box. Nothing sweeter than beating the Pies :thumbsup.
I wonder if Pie fans will fight and brawl amongst themselves again lol.

MCC increases crowd forecast after Pies win
Daniel Cherny
The Age
27 April 2018
Collingwood’s spike in form has led a to significant boost in the Melbourne Cricket Club’s estimated crowd for Sunday’s clash between the Magpies and Richmond at the MCG.
The MCC had tipped a crowd of 71,000 for the game, but upped that number to 78,000 on Thursday.
The increased estimate follows the Pies’ 49-point win over Essendon at the MCG on Anzac Day before a crowd of 91,440. The victory was Collingwood’s third on the the trot, with Nathan Buckley’s side starting to hit their straps ahead of the meeting with the reigning premiers.
The Tigers are themselves enjoying a purple patch. Their win over Melbourne on Tuesday night in front of 77,071 at the MCG was also Richmond’s third win in the succession, and 11th straight win at the venue. It also moved the Tigers to the top of the ladder for the first time since the middle of 1995.
A crowd of 78,000 would be the biggest turnout to a Pies-Tigers match since round four, 2013, when 81,950 watched Collingwood win by 34 points. That was the fourth highest home and away crowd for a match between the clubs.
The average attendance over the first five rounds has been 39,425, an increase of more than 1000 from the same stage last year.
Sunday is expected to be partly cloudy in Melbourne with a forecast top of 18 degrees. The match begins at 3:20pm, with the Bombers meeting the Demons across town at Etihad Stadium in a 1:10pm fixture.

Collingwood and Richmond clash shapes as a thriller
Herald-Sun
29 April 2018
COLLINGWOOD is riding a wave of self-belief as it prepare for its most eagerly awaited clash with bitter rival Richmond in decades.
Sunday's blockbuster at the MCG looms as arguably the biggest showdown between the AFL powerhouses since the 1980 grand final, which the Tigers won by 81 points.
Unlike during most of their recent meetings, both teams are firing on all cylinders.
Reigning premiers the Tigers are top of the ladder and have lost only one of their past 10 games, with a fourth-quarter steamrolling of Melbourne on Anzac Eve the latest example of their phenomenal pressure and defensive brilliance.
Collingwood's miserable 2017 was the polar opposite of Richmond's, but early signs this season suggest the Magpies have their mojo back.
Nathan Buckley's side is on a three-game winning streak, having backed up impressive victories over Carlton and grand finalist Adelaide with an Anzac Day demolition of Essendon.
All of a sudden, the Pies are playing with an attacking fluency, speed and swagger that has them confident of taking down the Tigers.
"We know we're coming up against a really good team but I think we're really up for it," Magpies forward Callum Brown told AAP.
"They've got heaps of self-belief but I think the great thing with our group at the moment is our belief is really high too.
"We're going to go in expecting to win."
With just a four-day turnaround from their Anzac Day game, the Pies have made two changes to their 22.
Forgotten forward Chris Mayne is in for his first game since round three last season and Jarryd Blair has also earned a call-up, with Travis Varcoe and Ben Crocker rested.
Richmond has recalled premiership trio Nick Vlastuin, Josh Caddy and Jack Graham in place of Brandon Ellis, Sam Lloyd and Jacob Townsend.
With the Tigers on an 11-game winning streak at the MCG, the Magpies are likely to persist with a midfield tagging role.
Brown could be in line for such a role, having run with Essendon ball magnet Zach Merrett during the Anzac Day game.

Pressure and first to the footy today, Tiges.
-
50 to Rance. Off to Sheds who kicks it long and Georgie takes a screamer 40 out. Misses to the right.
1 - 0
-
Pies had time and dropped it yet no free ::).
-
Sheds to Lambert in the pocket. Poster.
2 - 0
-
Umps wearing B&W stripes today ::).
-
Dusty don't argues Sidebottom and finds Nank 35 out. Runs out left and it stays there.
3 - 0.
They are saying it is windy out there and we have the breeze.
-
Grundy's quick clearing defensive kick from the throw-in and is marked by Butler 40 out. Sprays it left :scream.
4 - 0
Got to take your chances Tiges :scream
-
So that advantage, umpire? Jack gave up on it because he thought is was a free.
-
Cox marks but misses.
4 - 1
-
Finally. We go backwards to Short 55 out and he nails the long bomb :gotigers.
Rich 1.4-10
Coll 0.1-1
-
Prestia got pinged D25 out. Goal to the Pies.
10 - 7
-
Talk out there, Tiges. Broad and grimes collided and then a Pie free for too high. Mayne misses.
10 - 8
-
Some dumb footy out there so far.
10 - 14
-
Prestia to Sheds out of the centre and Higgins gathers and goals :gotigers
Dunn then dumps him off the ball and he gets another shot :lol.
Higgins with two in 15 secs :gotigers
Rich 3.4-22
Coll 2.2-14
-
Rance arms chopped over the shoulder and no free ::)
-
Quarter time
Richmond 3.4-22
Coll'wood 2.2-14
Goals: Higgins 2, Short
-
Pressure good, hopefully they crack soon.
-
Pressure without the footy is great. Pies are trying to handball through us (handballs us 23 Coll 63) and they are constantly disposing under pressure. We are getting it inside 50 enough but not making the most of our chances due to fumbling and dumb footy.
At the other end, we're making Cox look like Carey so far :scream.
Leading disposals:
Lambert 7
Grigg 6
Dusty 5
-
Nank spear kicks it through traffic and it lands in Jack's basket 30 out playing in front. Goal :gotigers
Rich 4.4-28
Coll 2.2-14
-
Soft free. Cox again. That's 5 marks and set shots so far for him.
28 - 21
-
LOL Cotch. Give it back to Treloar.
-
Rance from 55 goes long, Caddy gathers, does all the hard work then misses with the snap.
29 - 21
-
Seriously, why don't you kick it for them Razor Ray ::). What a hot 50 ::).
Having said that the Pies are having the better of it in the last 5-10 mins. Need to control possession more rather than just waiting for the counter attack and blindly bombing it out the back.
-
Our kicks forward are poor. Straight to Pie defenders :scream.
-
Good tackle by Butler and he wins the free for too high 50 out. Gives off to Houli who misses right.
30 - 23
-
Great play in the middle gets it to Graham who misses on the run.
31 - 23
-
Goal to them punishes our misses.
31 - 30
-
Geez we're fumbly today.
-
Higgins needed to give to his closer teammate rather than kick to Jack in a 2-vs-2.
-
LOL. Caddy on the boundary kicks it to the square and it dribbles through for a goal.
Gone to a review which looks like a goal as the whole ball is across the line.
Called a behind ::).
32 - 21
-
Another fumble at a crucial moment (Caddy).
From the throw-in Cotch to Butler on the run who misses also from 40 :scream
33 - 31
-
Any chance of a free kick!!! :banghead
-
These blind handballs aren't working, Tiges :banghead.
Pies get a goal on the siren to put them in front at half-time :banghead.
Richmond 3.4 4.9-33
Coll'wood 2.2 5.7-37
-
How did Pendlebury get rid of that last one. Total rubbish. Umpiring a factor.
-
Honestly not one to whinge about umpiring but there are clearly two different interpretations of holding the ball depending which colour jumper you are wearing.
-
we are getting absolutely bent over by the umps
-
Yep >:(
-
Any chance of a free kick!!! :banghead
Yep, we're being screwed by the umps today.
Having said that we're fumbling at crucial times and playing dumb footy when we get it especially forward of centre. Too many blind handballs and blind bombs inside 50 that go straight to Collingwood players. Need to lower the eyes and choose the better higher percentage option. Also our goalkicking has been pathetic today. Missing set shots as well as running into goal under no pressure and missing from 40 out :banghead.
Leading disposals:
Cotch 14
Grigg 13
Lambert 11
-
The 50mtrs against Georgie was the most cut-throat 50 I've ever seen! No warning or whistling the player back on the mark - just BANG! :huh
-
Have to lift the intensity big time and stop being to cute at times and go for the easy options.Gez goal kicking woeful.
-
The 50mtrs against Georgie was the most cut-throat 50 I've ever seen! No warning or whistling the player back on the mark - just BANG! :huh
Especially as both players we're running back with the flight and had to pull up first. A joke of a 50.
-
Have to lift the intensity big time and stop being to cute at times and go for the easy options.Gez goal kicking woeful.
Yep, we're allowing the Pies to get off the chain via their outlet player which we prevented Melbourne from doing last week.
Agree with us being too cute. Hopefully, we find our brains after half-time and finish off our work on the scoreboard.
-
Are we deliberately trying to play dumb today?
Houli hands to McIntosh under pressure who kicks it to a Pie.
Jack has an open man in the pocket and yet he kicks it to Georgie against 3 Pie defenders :huh
-
Good kick over the top by Houli. Georgie good contest. Butler runs on and dribbles (just :help ) a goal :gotigers
Back in front!
Rich 5.9-39
Coll 5.7-37
-
Gez guys not playing simple smart football.Cant let pies run it out easy. That's were Townsends work is underated his as ability to stop players like Howe.
-
Dusty across to Floss who misses it completely :P but it gets to Short and he kicks to Jack who takes a great mark at full stretch. Goal :gotigers
Rich 6.9-45
Coll 5.7-37
-
Nank on the run puts it towards the goalsquare but the Pie defender was in the better position and rushes it.
46 - 38
-
Turnover by the Pies. Graham to Higgins who chips it to Butler in the pocket. Going through but it doesn't make the distance and is rushed.
47 - 38
-
Dumb dumb dumb.
-
Hggins dropped next week
-
Higgins was free 55 and he could have taken a left foot kick but he stopped and went back on his right and got tackled. When then give away 50.
Floss gathers the ball in defence but he gets tackled. Goal to the Pies.
47 - 45
-
They're in front. Some Tigers need to regain their heads.
47 - 51
-
OMG we actually got as free.
-
Reckon we'll drop this game
-
That was dumb Cotch.
-
Playing dumb footy at times mind you experience heads to.
-
Plenty of frees in the last 5 mins.
Free to Grimes 70 out. Finds Jack 40 out by the boundary. Misses to the right.
48 - 51
-
You don't handball to a teammate with an opponent on him, Houli :facepalm.
From the ball-up. Caddy snaps a goal :gotigers
Back in front!
Rich 7.12-54
Coll 7.9-51
-
Gez so many panic merchants out there today.
-
Wooo caddy :clapping
-
Wooo caddy :clapping
snd again :gotigers
-
Well done by Astbury waiting back for the intercept and then to Short running out of defence. Edwards over the top handball to Cotch who finds Caddy 20 out. Goal :gotigers
Rich 8.12-60
Coll 7.9-51
-
Out of the centre off, Caddy long but it's rushed.
61 - 51

-
Short was taken high
Yep blatant as and another rodgering by Sir Maggot
-
Cut out the cute crap Richmond.
Exactly when we are not thinking about it and doing.it simple we a scoring.
Yep. It seems we knuckle down when we are trailing to get back in front and then we go back to trying the cute stuff (trying backheels, blind handballs and needless dinky kicks).
-
Short was taken high
Yep blatant as and another rodgering by Sir Maggot
Yep, clearly high by Treloar on Short.
-
Leading disposal getters:
Dusty 24
Cotch 18
Lambert 18
-
Short was taken high
we have to win to defeat the umps too
-
Can Prestia get a handball.
-
Play smart football and simple we win this and all have to put in.
-
A couple of risky kicks that misses targets across defence. It gets to Broad who dashes and finds Georgie. 50m out penalty. Goes to the square. Ball-up.
Pie kicks it high and it's a throw-in 20 out. Caddy in traffic dribbles his 3rd goal :gotigers
Rich 9.14-68
Coll 7.9-51
-
Dusty look-a-way handpass to Lambert on the move out of the centre and Jack marks 50 out. Misses to the left.

Rich 11.15-81

Coll'wood 2.2 5.7 7.9 10.10-70
Goals: Caddy 4, Riewoldt 4, Butler 3, Higgins 2, Martin, Castagna, Short.
-
Good win in the end, but we mess up a lot of scoring options more than their defence stops us.
-
Challenged again and fought them off however we are butchering some inside 50s with too unselfish play and then getting caught on the rebound. If facing goal and within 30 metres have a friggin shot!
We also looked very tired at times so two games in a short space of time affected both sides.
-
Pros:
* Off the ball workrate and pressure was very good for most of the day.
* We held our own in the middle to curtail the Pies supposed strength. Nank won the ruck battle against Grundy.
* We kicked away in the last after wearing them down and breaking them.
* Beating Collingwood is always a good day ;D.
Negs:
* Plenty of dumb and too cute footy, especially forward of centre that cost us goals :banghead.
* Not sure what we were doing with our handballs today. Too many long blind ones to get the ball moving forward that went straight to Magpies when we had teammates free on the inside and outside :P.
* Poor goalkicking. Geez we missed a lot of gettable shot today. My pet hate :scream.

The premiership coach was glowing in his praise of Collingwood, who brought the fight before being run over in the final term.
"I thought they were the best side we've played this year, with their pressure and their ability to hunt around the contest," Hardwick said.
Richmond was dominated in round two by Adelaide, going down by 36 points and being thrashed in contested possessions by 48 at Adelaide Oval.

Were still not at our best getting the job done so plenty of improvement still. What I like about us now is that we have a switch were we can blow a game open and score heavily sign of a good side.

Thats what pleases me the most, Id hate for us to be peaking at this stage of the season, its just too long a season to be playing at your best from this early. I agree with you that our decision making, ball movement and unforced errors are still quite sloppy, so we'll tidy that up and improve
-
We won't win them all and we're probably due to lose one soon but it's pretty good to play like that and still get the points. Better to have games like that and even a loss before the business part of the season to find out where we are weak. Reckon Collingwood did great at not letting us lock the ball in our 50. They know we like to get it in and bring it to ground but they swarmed the contest and got it out before we had a chance to set up and lock it in. Clearly something we only did half arsed today.

Agree. :thumbsup
Collingwood were very good at getting many more numbers in our F50 and were able to rebound easily.
-
I thought it was a pretty ordinary performance from us. We have a touch of the Arsenals about us, if we can just get back to playing normal football without so much of the pretty stuff we'll be very hard to beat. Just a comment on Jack Graham, he seems to have lost that freshness he had last year, been a very ordinary start to 2018 for young Jack.
-
I've seen many views claiming that Collingwood took the points today, they may be right too. They won the hit-outs but we won the clearances, they won won the disposals but we gained more territory, they took more 'marks of the year' but we scored more goals, they won 2 quarters ... but we got the only 4 points that matter! They can have their honorable loss, they can have the media fawning all over them, but we'll have the win!
Suck on that Collingwood! ;D
-
Played shyte against an in-form challenger and still won going away.... :shh
Leppa still needs to kick a few arses though.... :shh :shh
-
Agree did not play well. Thought Short was very impressive. A lot of players were quiet eg Grigg, Edwards and Kamydn. Thought our tackling was not as good as usually is and I thought we were caught too many times holding the ball-an indication of slow decision making. However having said it was good to win like we did against a good team who was in form. Grimes and Jack were impressive.

Agree Ramps. He's lost that spark, I'd give him a spell up forward - a lovely kick for goal and he can put on pressure.

Collingwood were very good at getting many more numbers in our F50 and were able to rebound easily.
Oh we will lose one 'Maybe' soon enough, I'm just so happy it wasn't that....god I hate them
And now they copy port Adelaide with thier Stupido Metallica song ..,wankers of the highest order can't stand them.
Hahaha which Metallica track is it??

We won't win them all and we're probably due to lose one soon but it's pretty good to play like that and still get the points. Better to have games like that and even a loss before the business part of the season to find out where we are weak. Reckon Collingwood did great at not letting us lock the ball in our 50. They know we like to get it in and bring it to ground but they swarmed the contest and got it out before we had a chance to set up and lock it in. Clearly something we only did half arsed today.

More appropriate Metallica songs would be either King Nothing for Buckley or Sanitarium for their fans..... :shh

Kill em All is an album Chuck. Suggest Seek and Destroy from that album.

If we're going by song titles (all tracks are excellent imo) then I would suggest No Remorse or seek and destroy if it was our song.
My fave off the album though has always been Whiplash and that's what we leave our opponents with :shh
