Richmond’s blessed run with injuries continue as premiership rivals count cost of bad luck
SAM EDMUND,
Herald Sun
May 3, 2018
RICHMOND’S blessed run with injury has been revealed as Greater Western Sydney count the cost of more bad luck.
No club has lost more players to injury since the start of 2017 than the Giants, while the Tigers’ premiership defence has started with a near-empty medical room.
Richmond’s imperious grip on the competition is franked by a playing list that has missed a combined 15 games in 2018 — 11 fewer than the next best, the Brisbane Lions.
The Tigers’ Grand Final rival Adelaide, on the other hand, has lost a league-high 56 games this season as the Crows battle a hamstring crisis.
GWS, who have made back-to-back preliminary finals despite having a squad far from healthy, are again battling with one hand tied behind their back.
Absent Brownlow Medal fancy Josh Kelly (groin) and star forward Toby Greene (foot) have both had a recurrence of injuries they rested and nursed throughout the pre-season, while Rory Lobb (knee) hasn’t been seen since Round 3 and Tom Scully faces 8-10 weeks out with a broken ankle.
Zac Williams has already been ruled out indefinitely with an achilles injury.
INJURY LADDER
Club Games Lost to Injury Club Games Lost to Injury
Adelaide 56 Sydney 40
Carlton 54 Essendon 40
Fremantle 52 Gold Coast 34
GWS Giants 50 St Kilda 34
Geelong 48 Port Adelaide 31
Collingwood 47 Hawthorn 29
W.Bulldogs 44 Melbourne 29
Nth Melbourne 44 Brisbane Lions 26
West Coast 41 Richmond 15
The injury ladder is detailed by Champion Data. The game’s leading analysts also measure the effect of injuries on what they consider to be a club’s best 22.
The Tigers missed 136 games through injury in their premiership year — the 10th most — but only 74 of those hit their best players — the 15th most.
This year, Collingwood and the Western Bulldogs have lost the most games (39) from their first-choice sides.
The best 22 measurement names Gold Coast as the hardest hit team of the past two years.
The Suns, who have had 187 of their 198 games missed through injury hit their best side, have now lost co-captains Tom Lynch (knee) and Steven May (finger) for Saturday’s meeting with the Western Bulldogs.

Maybe we just have players more dedicated to conditioning and recovery :shh
-
Really getting sick of this crap tigers got no injuries we have had players this season miss games or are they blind.Seems like they want to make it a exuse for our flag and form.
-
Our blokes are just not cowards like the rest of the comp.
-
Offsets with the umpire bias against us
-
have you noticed how many opposition players get injured playing us?

Yes I have. Which is why I wasn't fussed when we lost to Adelaide. No point going balls to the wall in R2.
They won the points at a cost, while Richmond went for a run and probably kept half their hand hidden.
And it's no luck either - good list management!

Yep, & the term 'Tiger Tough' isn't just a banner hanging from the fence anymore.
-
The media almost willing things to go against us.

What else is new? :shh

The media if we win three flags in a row:
It's concerning that we've now had three sides go back to back to back since the turn of the century, particulary if you also take into account Geelong's three flags & Sydney's regular Grand Final appearances - clearly equalisation isn't working and needs to go further as these procession of dynasties surely can't be good for the game..."
As fine achievement Richmond's is, there is liittle doubt they would struggle against Brisbane & Hawthorn's threepeat sides and probably even Geelong of 2007-11...
Other commentary would no doubt refer to our "charmed injury run", "MCG advantage" (never mentioned when Hawthorn defeated three interstate sides in a row-after losing to one first) and "lack of genuine quality challengers..." :shh

Who the stuff said that?

I reckon a lot of teams are blowing their O rings out throwing everything to try go with us and prove something. Watching some of our blokes still sprinting in the fourth to get to the ball and doubled up oppo players made me smile. That Adelaide game didn't bother me either, was crap umpiring, no point busting bodies up for an ego trip that looked like it was loaded from the outset. Those wankers carried on like they were redeemed for losing a grandfinal. Funniest crap I have ever clapped eyes on.

100x this. The social media reaction was hilarious.
"Makes up.for last year"
"Not so tough away from the G"
"Guess we've had the last laugh now".
Lol!

I think it was the Melbourne game, 5 seconds to go and Ellis of all people runs someone down from behind. Collingwood slapped themselves on the back for matching us for three quarters but if you want to beat us you have to go right to the final siren.
+1 on the Adelaide game :lol. I reckon even Dimma has forgotten about it or at least didn’t take it as seriously as they did after he said the Collingwood game was the hardest yet ;D
-
Could you even have imagined an opposition team getting the kudos that Collingwood received
after a 7 goal loss to the Tigers even last year?
Then today someone rings up and comments on our draw :huh
Make up your minds losers
-
Then: “Tiges got hardest draw, back to earth for them :lol”
Now: “Tiges draw is too easy!! :'(“
Also something something about home ground advantage and MCG, though 4 of 5 of our MCG games so far have been against co-tenants.
Can’t wait to see what the next excuse will be.

Quite possibly that we are too good? ;D

Thought the article was about injuries and in our case a lack of them. Not sure why people get antsy over a factual piece of journalism.
Lets face it the only players of note that we have lost to injury is
Prestia for 3 games.
Houli for 1
Vlastuin 1
Caddy 1
Suspensions
Broad 3

First you forgot Rioli, secondly people claims include last season too where we had a few other short term ones although nothing major.
People aren’t getting antsy that people are saying we’ve had a good run with injuries but because of the fact people are using at as the primary reason we won the flag essentially taking away credit from our great flag win. Good injury run, soft draw, our top players get off where others would be suspended, got to play all our finals at the mcg, blah blah blah.....

Rioli is our best defensive forward. Why not mention him?
Just about all premiership teams have a good run with injury.
Fact.
