Title: Richmond vs Essendon @ the M.C.G., Rnd 11, 2018 - Dreamtime at the 'G

Rioli joined forces with Essendon counterpart Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti — who also hails from the Tiwi Islands “where you’d get 50 people watching games” — to launch the two clubs’ Dreamtime guernseys ahead of their Round 11 meeting at the MCG.

Richmond’s, which was designed by Robert Young, features a spear and shield to “provide protection for the warrior”.

“(McDonald-Tipungwuti) grew up on Bathurst Island and I grew up on Melville Island,” Rioli explained.

“We all know each other — we’re family. He moved away … I was a bit younger then but I still remember him moving away from home to pursue his dream.

“He did it tough, missed a few drafts ... he finally got the opportunity and is playing good footy. It’s always a great time playing against him when I do get the chance. It’s always good to have two Tiwi boys going at it and I’m sure the Tiwi Islands will be cheering for their two players.”

BEHIND THIS YEAR’S DREAMTIME JUMPERS

RICHMOND’S vibrant Dreamtime guernsey sees the traditional sash replaced by a spear.

And designer Robert Young has also incorporated a shield as a symbol of protection.

The Tigers’ eighth Dreamtime jumper represents strength and connectedness, and symbolises the ground carvings of the borra grounds of initiation.

“The markings that run through this shield move together as one, but represent many journeys — the journeys of each person on this team, the journeys of each person of this country. It’s when they move together as one that the shield finds it strength,” Young said.

The spear element on the front of the jumper is a representation of the relentless spirit that resides in all of us, helping us to overcome the hardships and challenges in our lives.

“We stand with resolve that no matter how many times we get knocked down, no matter how great the obstacles that lay before us, no matter the fear, the doubt, or the worry, we will get up time and time again, and we will feel the roar of our relentless spirit.”

Club chief executive Brendon Gale thanked Young for the “wonderful design” that he said incorporated an “important and meaningful story”.

Essendon’s guernsey has been designed by 17-year-old Rina Moreen.

The teenager is from Milikapiti — on the Tiwi Islands — and also plays football herself.

“The Dreamtime game is always a match I really look forward to,” Bombers star Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti said.

“Every game you want to get up and going and help your team win but this game in particular is very special and you want to make the most of it.”

“The boys and myself came to the agreement that we would chose Rina’s design for this year’s Dreamtime guernsey. The artwork tells a story and it’s very special to see myself and teammates wearing it and celebrating my culture.”

I think they’ve stolen Caracellas gameplan since Neeld left. They’ve definitely played better the last two weeks a lot of fast ball movement and their tackling pressure has been the best in the league in those games.

A real worry if we don’t play our way.

The most worrying  aspect of our play at the moment is our contested ball. Shown up big time by WC who have dominant tall forwards, that sort of side will always give our defence a problem.

Prestia is our other ball winning mid who makes a big difference. Otherwise too much reliance on Dusty and Cotch so if one of them gets successfully tagged then we are in trouble. We got away with it against the lesser teams but need to turn things around soon, think Miles is also a pkayer we should look at.

If we win the midfield battle vs the Bombers then we win the game but they dont have the key tall fowards to really hurt us which will help.

SUMMARY

Two weeks ago this game held much less appeal, with the Bombers struggling with just two wins after eight rounds and the Tigers rampaging towards another top-four finish. But Essendon's form has turned around, with impressive wins over Geelong and Greater Western Sydney. Both were comprehensive victories that have given Essendon's season a pulse, and if John Worsfold's men can overcome the Tigers in the annual Dreamtime at the 'G contest then they will be back on track. Richmond has also shown a couple of cracks in recent weeks, losing to West Coast in Perth and being stretched by the out-of-form Saints last week before getting on top late in the game. Damien Hardwick says the Tigers still need to improve in a couple of areas, and the Bombers will be trying to pinpoint them and expose them on the big stage on Saturday night.

WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Saturday, June 2, 7.25pm AEDT

LAST FIVE TIMES

R10, 2017, Richmond 11.15 (81) d Essendon 10.6 (66) at the MCG
R17, 2016, Richmond 16.6 (102) d Essendon 11.17 (83) at the MCG
R10, 2016, Richmond 16.9 (105) d Essendon 10.7 (67) at the MCG
R22, 2015, Richmond 10.14 (74) d Essendon 7.5 (47) at the MCG
R9, 2015, Richmond 10.12 (72) d Essendon 8.11 (59) at the MCG

THE SIX POINTS

1. Dustin Martin has collected seven Brownlow Medal votes in the past three games the Tigers have faced Essendon (two best-on-grounds and a one-voter in 2015). Can he continue his run of form against the Bombers?

2. Essendon ranks highly for tackles this season, placed sixth overall in the competition with an average of 68.6 a game. In the past two weeks the Bombers have laid a combined 176 tackles to their opposition's 126.

3. Richmond has dominated Essendon recently, winning the past six encounters between the sides. The Bombers last won in round 11, 2014.

4. The Tigers have been one of the strongest finishing teams this season, winning seven of 10 final quarters so far this season. Essendon has won just three final quarters.

5. Both sides have been strong in the air inside-50 this year. Richmond is ranked second in the competition averaging 13.7 marks a game, while Essendon is ranked fifth in the AFL with an average of 12.

6. Josh Caddy is in career-best form, which has seen him rise up the Schick AFL Player Ratings board. He started the season at No.148 but is now ranked 108.

IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR …

Bombers recruit Jake Stringer has enjoyed some strong form in recent weeks and booted three goals last week against Greater Western Sydney. This week will be his 100th AFL game, having crossed from the Western Bulldogs last year.

PREDICTION: Richmond by 23 points

As someone mentioned need to start to win our fair share of contested ball and also do better in centre clearances.Pressure and tackling needs to rise to and lets not just bomb it in our forward 50 straight to opposition.

Bombers 4 wins have come against GWS who are currently outside the 8 and in shambles, geelong who havnt been consistently winning all season, port who currently sit outside the 8 in Melbourne and Adelaide in Melbourne so let’s not get carried away.

For all the comments about our draw we have already faced 5/7 teams sitting in the 8 and beaten 3 of them.

AFL Richmond Tigers Shane Edwards Dreamtime likened to grand final

Jake Michaels
ESPN Assistant Editor
1 June 2018

Richmond premiership player Shane Edwards believes marquee games such as Saturday night's Dreamtime at the 'G provide "good practice" for the pressure and intensity of an AFL grand final.

More than 80,000 fans are expected to pack the Melbourne Cricket Ground to watch traditional rivals Richmond and Essendon do battle in what will be the 14th Dreamtime clash.

Edwards, 29, says a lot of similarities can be drawn between the showpiece games of the home and away season and the grand final, both in terms of the build-up and in-game atmosphere.

"It's really good practice because there's a lot of things going on outside the game which also happen at the grand final," Edwards told ESPN. "It's a finals-like atmosphere and it's good practice to make sure you keep your eyes on the game, focus on what your role is, and not worry about anything else.

"We're really lucky [at Richmond] because we get to play Anzac Eve and we get the Dreamtime game.

"At the end of the day the game is played no differently, there's just a lot more buzz and feel about it. It's just a special day."

It certainly helped Richmond last year. The Tigers won both their Anzac Eve and Dreamtime matches before snapping a 37-year premiership drought when they thrashed Adelaide by 48 points in the grand final. Damien Hardwick's side also won all eight games last year where the crowd figure reached 60,000 and have continued on that form this season, sitting second with an 8-2 record.

While the Dreamtime clash provides a great opportunity to prepare for September, its main focus is to recognise and celebrate Australia's Indigenous culture. Edwards, one of 29 Indigenous players to reach the 200 game milestone, said it was an honour to once again be involved in the event.

"Along with all the things outside of the sirens, it really highlights all the past and present Indigenous players that have made the game what it is today," Edwards told ESPN. "It's something special that makes you feel very proud, especially now that we have got six Indigenous kids [at Richmond].

"There were a few years there where I was the only one and I felt a little bit lonely out there."

A win on Saturday evening could see Richmond regain top spot on the AFL ladder while Essendon can jump to within one win of the top eight with a victory.

The media are once again pumping up Essendon as contenders  :sleep.

David King (who tipped the Bombers to win the flag at the start of the year :facepalm) is tipping Essendon to win.

David King analyses Dreamtime at the ‘G and who Essendon can take down the reigning premiers

DAVID KING,
Herald Sun
June 1, 2018 10:51am

IT’S crunch time for the Essendon Football Club.

A finals campaign seemed a pipedream a fortnight ago but wins over Geelong and Greater Western Sydney have the door slightly ajar now the reigning premiers stand in the way.

The Bombers post Round 8 are a different beast than the dysfunctional and selfish version that wasted the first two months of the season. If Richmond underestimates Essendon, it will pay a price.

John Worsfold stood defiant, would not accept external views and shouldered the load as the senior coach must, but behind the scenes Dyson Heppell demanded more from the club’s leaders and most importantly, himself.

It’s no coincidence Heppell has played his toughest football since that pow-wow with his teammates. Season-high contested-possession games of 16 (Cats) and 14 (Giants) and a career-high 12-clearances last week stamped his “follow me” rather than “listen to me” adjustment.

It’s dramatic shift from apportioning blame to taking responsibility. No more of Brendon Goddard’s futile finger pointing but a team-first “do your job” mentality.

Heppell has become the captain Essendon hoped and the leadership of David Zaharakis cannot be understated.

Heppell’s legacy as captain has elevated significantly over past month but Trent Cotchin is the poster boy for AFL leadership. Who will have a bigger influence on Saturday night?

Essendon can defeat the Tigers. I repeat, Essendon can defeat Richmond despite the disparate ladder positions - 12th v 2nd.

The Bombers’ pressure game has become a feature of their alterations, highlighted by Mark Baguley’s shift from defence to attack which has ensured a tackle and harassment level unseen among “The Walking Dead” Bomber forwards who allowed clean passage for the opposition on counter-attack across the first two months of the season.

A spike in forward-half tackles from an average 29 tackles per match from Rounds 1-8, to 41 over the past fortnight highlights the shift in focus and intent. It’s not he volume of total tackles, but the location in terms of field position that’s critical.

The Tigers’ forward-handball game poses the perfect challenge for the pressuring Bombers — an opportunity that will again be driven by Devon Smith who’s the league’s best pressure player. What an outstanding off-season acquisition, but he needs others to continue to subscribe.

Essendon is the first team to have three successive games with a Champion Data pressure rating in excess of 200. The AFL pressure rating average is approximately 180 which is exactly the rating the Bombers had for the first seven rounds.

The Tigers thrive on chaos, under constant confrontational pressure and continual turnover, therefore the challenge is there for the Bombers to embrace but make no mistake, this game will be decided without possession of the football.

Richmond is an average clearance team. It has been outscored by its opposition despite the star factor and threat of Trent Cotchin, Dustin Martin and Kane Lambert at clearances.

The territory advantage from winning clearances must be Essendon’s. Tom Bellchambers’ connection with Heppell and a reinvigorated Zach Merrett is crucial.

Over the past three weeks the Toby Nankervis tap to Martin has happened only six times, ranked just inside the AFL’s top 30 combinations.

Bellchambers to Zaharakis (12 times), to Heppell (eight times) and to Smith (six times) illuminates a ruck-to-rover advantage for the Dons. Let alone when Shaun Grigg goes into the ruck.

Bellchambers had 19 hitouts to advantage against the Giants. Expect the same.

The Bombers must “catch and kill their own”, as Ross Lyon would say. If finals mean anything to this midfield core then a brutal approach must be evident.

Shock victories need individual wildcard performances. Think Shaun McKernan’s three-goal first quarter against Geelong. Jake Stringer is in good form and is quietly going about his business in a team-first fashion with nine score involvements last weekend both in the midfield and forward.

Stringer’s 100th game celebration may just be the perfect forum. It’s the stuff dreams are made of.

Essendon is a different team with Orazio Fantasia in the line-up. The Bombers have won seven of their last 11 games when Fantasia is in the side, with 18 goals from him in that period.

Fantasia is the class in the Bombers’ forward half and I’m expecting a big performance after three games back from injury.

Defeating Martin is a difficult task. Which way will Worsfold lean?

Trust Adam Saad again or leave Saad to play unrestricted as per the past 2-3 weeks?

Is Andrew McGrath physically capable at this early stage and do you want him on the last ine of defence?

I wonder if Goddard would put his hand up for one of the biggest challenges in the game? What a statement that would make to the Essendon playing group.

Would Goddard sacrifice himself for the team gain? Physically there’s no issue, mentally it would be a shift to play a negating role, but Goddard is more than capable.

Is he willing?

If it’s good enough for Scott Pendlebury to tag Patrick Cripps then why not Goddard?

Let’s wait and see how creative and daring Worsfold and his coaches are on Saturday night.

Richmond has won the last six confrontations against the Bombers, but this would be the most significant.

Essendon’s 2018 finals campaign is on the line. Win this and it can dare to dream. Essendon by less than a goal and Heppell to take home the boomerang.

Lot of love for the Bombers from the media this week which is funny after their mauling when they were struggling
It's time to put the Bombers back in their box with a decisive victory.

It's a sellout:

Public tickets for the #DreamtimeAtTheG match have now sold out. Once the stadium reaches capacity, only reserved seat members or patrons with a pre-purchased Ticketek issued ticket will be granted entry.

Yep. Match or beat them in the contested footy and clearances and that will go along way to beating them.

Our half-forwards need to lift too. Put tackling pressure on the Bomber defenders and close down the easy outlets on the spread and you'll strangle them.

Why Essendon Bombers are a chance against Richmond Tigers: Tim Watson

By SEN
1 June 2018

Essendon champion Tim Watson believes his former side has a chance to upset reigning premiers Richmond at the MCG tomorrow night.

The Bombers have found their groove over the past fortnight, winning their last two matches on the back of manic pressure.

John Worsfold’s men have become the first team to record a pressure factor of more than 200 in three straight games, and Watson thinks the defensive mentality could be pivotal in Essendon causing a boilover.

“There is a chance,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“Richmond deserves to be the favourites going into this game, but the way Essendon has been playing, you look at that whole sort of pressure metre thing, whether you believe in stats or not, the reality is the Bulldogs blew it to the scheissenhausen late in their premiership season. Richmond did exactly the same.

“Essendon’s pressure right now, all over the ground, is right up there. It’s off the charts.

“Can they maintain that is the big question, against a side that is very fast and plays the MCG as well as any team going around.”

Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said he is looking forward to the “great test” tomorrow’s Dreamtime clash will present.

Shane Edwards has a game-high 258 metres gained from seven disposals at 71 per cent efficiency. Jayden Short is not far behind at 253 metres gained from eight disposals at 88 per cent efficiency. Between them they have five inside 50's.

Richmond have won just the two hitouts, but they have both been-to-advantage. Their ferocity around the contest has also allowed them to shark five Essendon hitouts, and win just one less clearance than the Bombers (9-10).

Came out after 1/4 time as though this would be a walk in the park and let them back in the game in the first 15 mins of that 2nd qtr. Pathetic, panicky, error-ridden and simply dumb footy. Got our composure and structure back late in that quarter and kicked 3 in a row thanks to Dusty saying enough is enough.

Let's hope we don't have our usual 3rd qtr sleep  ::) although the 3rd qtr is Essendon's worst as well.

Early on in that quarter our disposal efficoency was around 52%. Fortunately we aren’t able to be a little cleaner the second half of that quarter.

I think we are playing better but it’s our disposal and too cute dinky kicks that are hindering us blowing this game away.

Richmond have not scored 60 points in a first half against Essendon since Round 9, 2009 (62).

Shane Edwards has been the standout player of the first half. He leads all players with 16 disposals, 387 metres gained, six inside 50's, five score involvements and two goals to go with seven contested possessions and six pressure acts.

Team stats:

Clearances:  15 - 24   ( centre: 6 - 8; stoppages: 7 - 18 )
Inside 50s:   30 - 28   ( marks in50: 7 - 5 )
Tackles:       30 - 30
Hitouts:         7 - 24
Frees:           8 - 11  ..... yet Bomber fans are whinging about the umps  ::).

Possies:

Macca  8

Interested to know our disposal efficiency this year compared to last. Maybe i am expecting too much but we seem to be turning the ball over regularly and must have an all time record number of clangers. Is it really that difficult to find a target by foot 20 metres away. Not sure about our forward line either, ball hits the deck and our smalls dont seem to be where they should be, Jack also doesnt seem his energetic self tonight after his concussion.

Our home & away form wasn't great at this time last year. Plenty of dumb stuff (hence the 3 narrow losses especially vs Freo & GWS). Our disposal improved dramatically by the time we hit the finals.

A step in the right direction for Menadue & the leaders were fantastic across the board.

And boy oh boy, didn't Brandon Ellis shut a few complete muppets up  :wallywink That effort at the start of the 4th quarter summed up what he & Richmond are all about.

A few of the boys are starting to find some form now

Thought our best were Edwards, Short, Rance, Butler, Conca, Ellis, Martin

BEllis is important to us when he plays well and to his strengths. The last 2 weeks have been encouraging.
Edwards is going next level
The defence overall are looking more balanced and settled the past few weeks. Feel better when Grimes is back in
Butler had his best game of the season tonight, was very very good
Higgins was busy - lacking a bit of polish but he a tenacious little nugget
Menadue looked more comfortable and importantly his positioning was good, wasnt a weak link in our structures
Moore was very encouraging and him playing well gives the opposition something else to think about
Conca was good tonight, more of that please

The most important thing we are showing is that there is a distinctive style to our play that we are attempting each week. When it works for 100 minutes, we absolutely flog mediocre sides like Essendon.
I’m keen to see how we go in the next 2 weeks before the bye. The really good kicking sides have smashed us so far this year. Port are highly skilled but fell apart when the Hawks applied the heat yesterday.
Let’s see what happens against us on their home deck

Best footy we've played this season

BEllis - much improved performed. Only pulled put of 2 contests :clapping Have said it before what he showed laat night must be the norm not the exception.

Moore - still not sold but alot better. Set shots are a major concern. In a close contests cannot afford to misss some of those "sodas". Lack of 2nd efforts at times a worry. Needs to get out the refusing to chase out of the system ASAP

Edwards - BOG by a long way

Butler - where's that been?

Thought Nankervis was outstanding

From Robbo's column:

4. ESSENDON
You can bring the heat, but you also have to handle the heat from the opposition. Essendon was OK in the pressure stakes, but its ball use disintegrated under Richmond’s defensive system, which broke the Bombers. They went at 59 per cent efficiency and coughed up 89 points from their turnovers, 10 goals coming from turnovers in the defensive half of the ground. They were jittery on the big stage, which is becoming a unwelcome trend.
