Title: Schulz gets a new 2-year deal

Tigers show faith in Schulz with new contract
The Age
March 17, 2006

ONE year after charges of speeding and drink-driving cost his club its major sponsor, Richmond youngster Jay Schulz has signed a new two-year deal with the Tigers, tying the promising key-position defender to the club until the end of 2008.

The re-signing is a show of faith from a hierarchy that has been impressed by the manner in which Schulz has bounced back from both the off-field controversy and a broken ankle that ruined his 2005, restricting the player being groomed as Richmond's long-term centre half-back to just four games for the season.

Schulz was in fine pre-season form when he suffered the injury in the Tigers' first pre-season cup game, his woes compounded only a few weeks later when he was picked up by police over the legal blood alcohol limit. The club fined him $5000.

But the incident also cost Richmond its major sponsor, TAC — a deal worth $750,000 after the government-backed road safety campaign had placed the club on its last warning when Royce Vardy was caught drink-driving in 2001.

The money we made changing from the TAC to AFG because of what Sarge did probably pays for his contract lol.

It's not about the money we made it's also about getting out of sponsorship from a government enterprise and into more private sector revenue which should make management more accountable to perform.
The lethargy that appeared to be around the place has dissapated somewhat and and the attitude of all is focussed towards success. With success comes exposure and that is more important to private enterptise. For them it is more than just having a sign painted on the roof at punt road and a slogan on a jumper. if you get my drift!

Absolutely Mopsy. AFG is a WA company IIRC looking for national exposure from a AFL club to grow their mortgage brokering business across the country. It's big biccies to them and they'd want a worthwhile return from their sponsorship/investment..

Hopefully with his immediate future stable, Sarge can really mark his mark at CHB

Sarge has done stuff all to earn this contract but I do hope he makes the most of it. The potential excuse is running a bit thin.

I don't reckon it'll come to this as we need all the KPP we can get especially in defence but signing him up also keeps him as a trade option.

Talented young Richmond key-position player, Jay Schulz, has had his contract with the Club extended until the end of the 2008 season.

It’s a strong show of faith by the Tigers in the 20-year-old, who managed only four senior appearances during the 2005 season, due to injury problems, to take his overall games tally to 25 since making his AFL debut in 2003.

“The match committee has recognised that Jay is going to be an important part of our future,” said Richmond’s Director of Football, Greg Miller.

“Jay’s pre-season has been outstanding and he now looms as a player with the capabilities of playing a key role both forward and back.

“We’re always conscious of ensuring that the contracts of players from interstate, who we want to retain on our list, don’t expire. So, we made the move of offering Jay a new three-year deal – 2006, with an extension into ’07 and ’08.

“The documents were completed at the Club today and will be lodged with the AFL on Monday.”

Schulz’s ability to cope so well with the difficulties he experienced in 2005, was a big plus in the eyes of the Tigers’ brains-trust.

“Jay had quite a bumpy ride last year, with a broken ankle, followed by a well-documented misdemeanor,” Miller said.

“During the season, Terry Wallace made a conscious decision to use ’05 as a body-building program for Jay. He subsequently put on a huge amount of bulk throughout the year and, after a top pre-season now, he’s also added some strong run into his game.

“All this, combined with his excellent kicking, makes him an exciting prospect for us.

“We see him as being an integral part of our side for many years to come.

“It’s a credit to him how he handled the problems he encountered last year, and he’s been rewarded for the maturity he’s displayed with a place in the playing group’s junior leadership group, as well as this contract extension.”

Without a doubt, Schulz is the tall with the most potential on our list! Hughes would probably follow  :thumbsup

Jumpin' Jay may be hoping to lower his profile slightly. Getting busted for drinkdriving and causing the club to lose its major sponsor was impressive stuff from the 20-year-old last year. But after being sent to Coburg for life, Schulz reappeared late in the year and showed some very positive signs at centre half-back. He's quick enough and big enough to make a fist of it and can take a fair dinkum screamer.

I didn't realise Sarge had done pretty well compared to most of his 2003 draft peers. Apart from midfielders Wells, Goddard and Schammer who have played more than 50 games, Schulz is in the next small group (7th overall) with 25. Nothing to hang his hat on yet but as a tall if he can come on this year we wouldn't have done too badly out of such a poor draft.
