Garthwaite will be one of the best key defenders in the AFL within 3 years.

Richmond VFL wins big in battle of the Tigers

Ivan Soldo tracks a ground ball inside 50, picks it up at his boot laces, embraces the tackle, somehow gets his boot to ball and finds Callum Moore, who then makes the impossible, possible.

Moore, under immense pressure, falling across the boundary line, flung his right boot at the footy, his check-side attempt sliding through—cuing rapturous celebrations.

He was that deep in the Brunton Avenue pocket, that if he had a myki, then he would have had to touch on.

It was Moore’s third goal of the first half, he went onto kick five in a best-on-ground performance.

Richmond VFL burst out of the blocks, but was pegged back by a hard-working Werribee, eventually breaking the dam wall with a six-goal final term to register an 18.16 (124) to 5.8 (38) win.

Coming back from AFL duties, Moore played with an air of superiority and impacted on nearly every contest he attended, be it in the air or on the ground.

Tiger fans would have loved the streak of aggression he played with, epitomised by a crunching tackle he laid in the third term, which saw him slot his fourth major.

In another early morning game, the Tigers sprang into action in the first term, causing turnover-after-turnover and importantly finished off their work in front of goal.

In the blink of an eye, Richmond opened up a five-goal lead and had Werribee gasping for air.

Werribee however lifted its rating in the second term, attacking the corridor at will, giving the hosts something to think about on the counter-attack.

The class of Corey Ellis came to the fore early in the second term, with an effortless goal from on the paint of 50, before Werribee kicked into gear.

The Tigers from the west kicked back-to-back goals and held the majority of the momentum before the brilliance of Ivan Soldo and Moore inside-50 separated the sides.

Soldo assisted in Moore’s goal-of-the-year nomination before showcasing his dominance in the air.

He rose and clunked a pure contested mark, before going back and slotting the goal, which reasserted the Tigers’ ownership of the momentum.

Clutch goals to Moore and Soldo pushed the lead out to a comfortable 36 points at halftime.

The third term was an arm-wrestle with Werribee upping the ante with its pressure but couldn’t convert its opportunities going forward.

The Tigers however were able to hit the scoreboard through the likes of the tenacious Jake Aarts, the sturdy and classy Blake Grewar and that man Moore.

Like good sides do, Richmond has an uncanny way of sensing the moment and lifting the tempo when required, which it did exponentially in the final term.

Werribee’s gallantry in the second and third term came to no avail as the hosting Tigers flexed its muscle with a six-goal-to-nil final term.

The onslaught started when Callum Moore judged the flight of the ball to perfection, then coolly snapped his fifth major.

The highlight of the term came when Ryan Garthwaite found himself in uncharted waters, free inside forward-50, and marked just inside the arc.

The man that kicked 100 goals in his under-16 year at Lavington Football Club seized a very rare opportunity to slot a major.

In characteristic fashion, Garthwaite guided the ball down on to his boot and watched it sail over the goal umpire’s hat.

He celebrated accordingly and was mobbed by his teammates, with each getting a chance to ruffle the hair of the much-loved figure at Tigerland.

Richmond cruised to a big win and has now sewn-up a top-two spot.

RICHMOND    5.5       8.10     12.12   18.16 (124)

Callum Moore will be hoping to reclaim his spot in the Richmond team, kicking five goals as the VFL's ladder leaders comfortably saw off Werribee on Saturday.

Moore's haul complemented a well-rounded game, which also saw him collect 19 disposals from 12 marks as the Tigers eased to an 86-point win at Punt Road.

Anthony Miles (31 disposals), Shai Bolton (27 disposals) and Corey Ellis (26 disposals) were among the big ball winners, while father-son prospect Patrick Naish was also impressive. Naish continued his push for an AFL debut with 26 touches.

Watched Stengle closely in the first 2 and bit quarters. He is a good player wins most one on ones with ease. He looks too good for this level and looks a very clever footballer IMO.

He certainly has all the tools. It would depend on his knowledge of our game style and where to position himself in certain situations during games. The coaches mentioned this as a reason why Higgins and now Baker are playing, they picked up our style quickly. I am over Grigg playing second ruck as we get smashed at clearances so Balta would assist in this area purely on his leap...he will be a very good player moving forward.

Watched a bit of this before the big game.

Have to say there's a lot to be excited about.

Sold actually looked like he's taken a step forward, and Balta looks like he will be a dead set gun. Surprised if we don't play Balta sooner rather than later - has the size and speed to play genuine key post, and apparently can ruck a bit, which would be great for Nank who seriously needs some backup imo.

I agree with this. Even though I have been a Miller fan from draft time, I think CCJ could provide some assistance to Nank whilst also going forward and playing deep against midget defences.

Coleman-Jones would get smashed in the AFL and would do no better than Grigg in the ruck.....still a year away...at least... :shh

Balta would be spent before half-time..... :shh

Soldo is rubbish & slow and would compromise our defensive pressure..... :shh

If the aim is to just to provide more of a contest than Grigg currently does without sacrificing our pace & compromising our structures then I'd give second ruck duties to Moore or even try McIntosh in there before any of them at this stage..... :shh

Man I wish Chol wasn't injured..... :-\

Need to see Stengle at some stage.....his composure & superior decision making, particularly in the forward 50 is something we desperately need more of and he already demonstrated last year that he can play at AFL level....and this year he looks even better..... :shh

Disagree with this statement. I have been watching him in the ruck in the seconds and he has come on in leaps and bounds. How could you be worse than Grigg in the ruck anyway?
I know he wouldn't be as good around the ground but would be handy up forward....

Watched the first half yesterday with the following observations:
Miles was heavily tagged but played to his usual standards. He kicks around his body too often but is a good player.
Bolton is playing a running half back to improve his defensive side. Was sensational with ball in hand whilst providing great run but it is clearly evident he needs to improve defensive actions. I like this kid  :thumbsup
Ellis was best on ground in the first half (IMO) as he is so clean and calm whilst in possession. Spent time as a pure inside mid and on the HB flank. Ellis is in between levels at the moment but must push as hard as he can to bust his way in and stay there...he is good enough but can he do it.
Balta is so exciting as he does everything a big man is required to do. He is elite in the air and runs well and possesses a magnificent leg. When he understands the game style and increases his tank he will be a great inclusion to the firsts.
Naish played the Short role. He was always in the right position to receive and run with great kicking efficiency. Looks like he has added some size and with this has more aggression in the contest.
Miller was the big surprise and standout for me. He is big, strong and runs well but his kicking as decision making was impressive. Miller could develop fast and play senior footy next year for sure :thumbsup
Soldo was solid and did enough to suggest he is improving every game. Can take a fine mark and is better by foot. Would like him to jump at center bounces better as often he has landed before the ball is ready to hit.
Stengle is so good in a one on one...he wins all the time. He is so clean and hardly get taken down in a tackle ans is such a smart player...love him :thumbsup
Moore was great and clearly above the level. Needs to bring this confidence to the senior team next opportunity.
Mile was the carry over player.

Morris, Ballard, Wood and Aarts (he could be on a list easy) played well. I loved the work of Silvestro and Ernest...they are great!!

There's plenty of little reasons, mostly concerning the space between his ears but the main physical reason is that his lack of pace gets exposed at AFL level....  :shh

He looks like he mentally has VFL opposition covered but when he plays up a level he looks like he mentally lacks in that area. He might not believe he belongs playing with and against stars of the competition. No doubt in my mind he can play but will he mentally improve? Hope he can.

yes. I agree. I reckon he just lacks the confidence to back himself at AFL level. I think if once he knows he belongs then he might just be a very good player once he believes he can play at the level on a consistent basis. It’s like he’s too timid and just needs a breakout game, then he might be ok.

It’s all a lot of ifs, buts and maybes though. Some players just lack belief.
Higgins on the other hand is opposite and is someone who just knows he belongs and plays accordingly.

VFL forward and development coach, Paul Griffiths' summary of how the Tigers’ players performed in last Saturday’s Round 17 win over Werribee at Swinburne Centre, Punt Road Oval.

Anthony Miles

27 disposals, 14 handball receives, five clearances and five inside-50s

“Continues to be a really good player at this level. Was heavily tagged by the opposition, which we expected going into the game. I was really pleased with our connection and ability to support ‘Milesy’ in that role. It helped him be one of the best players on the ground - 27 disposals, five clearances - it was a really good game from ‘Milesy’ again.”

Patrick Naish

26 disposals, 13 handball receives, seven inside-50s and five rebound-50s

“Continues his really good form. He’s played four games now where he’s been one of our major possession winners, he had another 26 disposals last Saturday, with his ability to rebound with seven inside-50s and five rebound-50s, which included two score assists. He’s playing on the wing and half-back, but it was his ability to transition which was pleasing.”

Shai Bolton

24 disposals, four tackles, six clearances and 14 contested possessions

“Played off half-back and then through the midfield. We continue to try and develop him in different roles. It was really pleasing to see him get involved in the offensive part of the game. I think he had about 13 disposals in the last quarter, as a midfielder, including six clearances.”

Corey Ellis

23 disposals, one goal, seven marks, five tackles and seven clearances

“Played a slightly different role, a bit as a forward/mid(field) role. Again, another who we’re trying to develop and expose in different situations. His ability to win clearances from a forward role was really pleasing. He had seven clearances and kicked a nice goal from outside 50. It was a good game from Corey.”

Callum Moore

19 disposals, five goals, 12 marks and three tackles

“Played arguably his best game for the football club in the three years he’s been on the list. His marking ability really stood out with 12 marks for the day, seven of those contested, which is a huge number. His ability to jump and launch at the football and then his athletic capability to cover the ground was a real feature. He kicked 5.3 and set-up a couple of others. He looked way above the level and it was really pleasing the way he returned from AFL football.”

Noah Balta

17 disposals, one goal, eight marks, five inside-50s and four rebound-50s

“A bit of a swingman, we played him forward and back, but didn’t play ruck this week, but he has done that in the past. A really athletic player who can run and launch at the footy and cover the ground. An example of this is when he grabbed the ball in the middle of the ground, ran and bounced, and kicked a goal from 50 metres out. It was a really good performance from Noah. He performed better down back than as a forward, but he still managed to kick a goal when he was down there.”

Ivan Soldo

16 disposals, 33 hit-outs, one goal, three tackles and three clearances

“Played his best game for a number of weeks with 16 disposals, 33 hit-outs, three clearances and took a spectacular mark when playing forward. We’re trying to get a balance with him playing forward and ruck. It was clearly one of his best games, with his marking a feature as well.”

Ryan Garthwaite

13 disposals, one goal, seven marks and two tackles

“Defended really well for three quarters, then we swung him into forward/ruck in the last and we’re developing him in different roles as well. He kicked a nice goal and we had a good celebration around the goal he kicked. He’s in great form but we just wanted to see if he could play that forward/ruck role, which he seemed to do pretty well in the last quarter. Seven marks was a feature for him for the day, especially three contested.”

Callum Coleman-Jones

12 disposals, 20 hit-outs and three clearances

“Played through the ruck and forward. His ability to support others in the aerial contests is really standing out. It’s almost to the detriment of his own marking ability, but we’ll get that balance right. He only had two marks himself and that’s one of his greatest strengths. Maybe a little bit too unselfish at times, so we want him launching at the football more. Played probably his best game through the ruck all year, with his follow-up work being a real feature.”

Tyson Stengle,

Eight disposals, one goal and two tackles

“Unfortunately got injured in the second quarter, but up until that stage he was the best player on the ground. His ability to win all of his one-on-ones, be it aerial or on the ground, and his tackling, really stood out in that first quarter. We didn’t see him after half-time.”

Ben Miller

Seven disposals, one tackle and one hit-out

“Played back and a little bit of forward. Another who’s hard to play on. We’d love to increase his offensive influence. He has a low possession rate but he’s really hard to play on with his defensive stuff stacking up.”

VFL-listed players

Jacob Ballard

26 disposals, two goals, six tackles and seven clearances

“He’s in great form. He was one of our best performed players again in the last few weeks. He’s playing off the wing and inside mid(fielder) and even forward, 26 disposals, six tackles, seven clearances and two goals is an outstanding performance.”

Blake Grewar

22 disposals, two goals, five tackles, and eight handball receives

“Returned to playing as an inside mid(fielder), which is what we recruited him for and 22 disposals and his ability to put pressure on around the contest was really evident. His class around goals really stood out, kicking two goals, one was from 45-metres out.”

Brandon Wood

20 disposals, 13 contested possessions and eight clearances

“An inside mid(fielder), really hard to play against, a big strong body and is important to our structures. His contested work led the way for the team with eight clearances. Didn’t finish his work, he could have had a couple of goals himself, but a really good contributor.”

Tom Silvestro

20 disposals, one goal, nine tackles and nine handball receives

“Is one of our best players, week-in-week-out. His ability to play inside mid(field), wing and forward, anywhere we need him, he generally impacts. His GPS (numbers) are off the charts and he’s a really good contributor and led the team with nine tackles.”

Jake Aarts

17 disposals, two goals, three tackles and four inside-50s

“An important role player, a fantastic competitor, really hard-nosed and tough player. I really love his contribution to the team, he kicked two goals and had 17 disposals as a small forward.”

Dan Coffield

14 disposals, three marks and three rebound-50s

“A great role player for us, really hard to play against down back. He sets us up, is a good organiser. It was pleasing to see him get involved in the offensive chains this week with 14 disposals.”

Shaun Mannagh

13 disposals, three tackles and five inside-50s

“A really important runner in our team, can play multiple roles. He played on the wing and forward and he’s another player with a great ability to cover the ground. His transition and defensive acts stood out this week.”

Harry Tanner

13 disposals, one goal, five marks, three tackles and four inside-50s

“The last game he played with us he didn’t really play his role in regards to the mechanics of defence and offence. We coached him through those things and it was pleasing this week that he came in and he played the best game he’s played for us in a number of weeks. Thirteen disposals, three tackles and a goal was everything we’d asked of him.”

Joel Ernest

12 disposals, six handball receives and three rebound-50s

“Great role player, hard to play on, offensively really strong this week. We were pleased with his game.”

Steve Morris

Nine disposals, six tackles and three marks’

“As usual, a super competitor, low possession rate, but high impact in the game. Influencing others in many ways. A great captain’s game from him.”

Joel Cusack

Five disposals, two tackles and one mark

“Played his second game as a key forward. They (Werribee) played one of their strongest defenders on him interestingly enough. He’s a great competitor and we need him launching at the ball and supporting others in the aerial contest. It was a solid performance and I’m sure he’ll learn a lot from this game.”

Brenton Credlin

Four disposals, two tackles and one rebound-50

“Played wing and half-back. Even though he had low numbers, his influence on the game wasn’t about his possession rate, but more about being involved in the mechanics which happened with his role playing.”
