----------------------------------------------------------
JACK Riewoldt has lit up Metricon Stadium, putting on a 10-goal masterclass in Richmond's 74-point win over Gold Coast on Saturday.
Not only did Riewoldt kick the biggest bag of the AFL season, he leapfrogged four other players to take the lead in the Coleman Medal with 58 goals, four clear of Kangaroo Ben Brown.
The 19.11 (125) to 7.9 (51) win secures the Tigers a top-two spot regardless of what happens in the final fortnight.
It also means the premier will not have to leave the MCG again if they win their first final.
On a day in which the Tigers looked to be going through the motions, Riewoldt put on a show at Metricon in front of 18,102 fans – many of them wearing yellow and black.
His stat line was like something from a video game; 26 disposals, 14 marks, 12 of them inside 50 and 10.6.
"It was a great individual day for Jack, there's no doubt about that," Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said.
"The players know he's around the seven or eight goal mark … and then every ball is going to him.
"He's had a great season. He's improved his game in a different way again, which for me is a measure of a player that's gone from good to great."
Fittingly Riewoldt hit double figures with just two seconds remining to cap off the win.
The haul could have been even bigger though if the star forward kicked straight, with five of his misses from set shots and the other a left foot snap from 25m.
Riewoldt effectively put the game away in the first quarter, kicking 4.3 and making a mess of Gold Coast defenders Steven May and Kade Kolodjashnij, beating them on the lead time after time.
He kicked one goal in the second, three more in the third and with his teammates making a concerted effort to look for him in the final quarter, added another two to finish with 10.
May, Kolodjashnij and even Jack Leslie were given chances, but Riewoldt proved why he's the game's in-form forward, beating them all with speed and strength.
Gold Coast coach Stuart Dew described it as a "tough" day for the Suns.
"We asked our boys for a couple of focus points, contest was one and I think for three quarters our contested possession was alright, we matched them," he said.
"But turnovers cost us 10 goals … that was pretty much the game.
"Just how slick they are to spread from stoppages was a good lesson for us. No wonder they're top and probably going for another flag."
Despite looking for his own kicks, Riewoldt also had a goal assist and was part of another and finished with 20 score involvements.
Josh Caddy had an excellent day, kicking three of his four goals in the second quarter, but was overshadowed by his high-profile teammate.
It was another bleak game for the Suns with Pearce Hanley and Will Brodie both suffering hamstring injuries.
Gold Coast battled right until the end but were simply outclassed.
MEDICAL ROOM
Gold Coast: Another rotten day for the Suns with Will Brodie and Pearce Hanley both pinging hamstrings. Brodie did his before half-time and Hanley late in the third quarter. Neither returned and neither will play again this year.
Richmond: Clean bill of health for the Tigers. Returning stars Bachar Houli and Dion Prestia were both strong contributors in their first games back from injury.
NEXT UP
Richmond faces one of the tougher tests in footy at the moment next Friday night, facing a red-hot Essendon at the MCG. The Tigers have just six days to prepare. Gold Coast has the luxury of staying at home two weeks in a row and host arch-rivals Brisbane in the QClash next Saturday night.

Richmond's Jack Riewoldt steamrolls Suns to take Coleman lead
By Andrew Stafford

Jack Riewoldt was hungry. One of the league’s most team-oriented forwards, he entered the match against the Gold Coast Suns with a serious appetite. As expected, the Tigers ate the Suns alive. But with 10 goals, six behinds and 14 marks – 12 of them in attack – Riewoldt was very much the first in and best fed.
Riewoldt is now leading the Coleman Medal race, with 58 goals in a brilliant season. It’s rare for an individual player, even Dustin Martin, to so dominate a game as Jack did this one.
In the first quarter, he kicked 4.3 of the Tigers’ total of 4.4 and was drawing the ball as magnetically as any midfielder.
A bit straighter – he’d be dirty at missing a number of those shots – and Jack would have been on Fred Fanning pace. Fanning is the long-standing holder of the record of 18 goals in a game, set in 1947. It's a mark that will probably never be beaten in a game of zones and presses, but for a while there on Saturday it wasn’t entirely out of the question.
Riewoldt was too quick and slick on the lead, too good in the air and too clever at ground level: first for Steven May, then for Kade Kolodjashnij, then Jack Leslie, then May again, who really was the only viable match-up, but the Suns skipper copped a rare flogging as the Tigers went looking for their white-hot full-forward at every opportunity.
Maybe Richmond coach Damien Hardwick told the Tigers to vary their approach in the second quarter, with Josh Caddy kicking three of his four goals for the match – one of them largely thanks to a Riewoldt handball out of a pack. The last, in the third quarter, came from a Riewoldt kick.
It was that kind of game, where the barracking is for a player more than the team, possibly by supporters of both clubs – not that there were many Suns fans in a large crowd of yellow and black. By the end, Riewoldt was cooked, hunched with hands on knees, but sated. He is the only player to kick 10 goals or more in a game this season.
The Suns actually did reasonably well – far better, in fact, than their effort against Carlton a fortnight ago – digging in hard enough for two-and-a-half quarters without ever being able to match Richmond’s firepower. They had a rare highlight in the last term, with Callum Ah Chee taking a genuine mark of the year contender.
But they were blown away in the third, Richmond slamming through seven goals to the Suns’ three points, then easing up only slightly in the last to finish 74-point victors. Martin was at his rampaging best in the middle, and Daniel Rioli had 26 disposals, easily a career high.
Poor Pearce Hanley, after an excellent first half for the Suns, finished the game on the bench with yet another hamstring injury to end a wretched season, joined by Will Brodie, depriving the Suns of extra run, though they salvaged credibility with a four-goal final quarter.
The match finished in fitting style, Riewoldt’s tenth coming with just two seconds to spare: a snap just outside the goal square, fed to him by Jack Higgins. Higgins could easily have kicked it himself but clearly chose to give it to the man of the moment, who wore a huge grin of thanks.
He’ll sleep with a full belly tonight.
