RICHMOND superstar Dustin Martin has failed to complete Richmond's full-scale training run just seven days out from a blockbuster preliminary final.
AFL.com.au cameras captured the moment Martin left the training track, doing a run-through on the sidelines before heading indoors.
Martin has missed just one game since the end of 2014 – round 12 this season with a calf injury as he left to go to New Zealand.
The Tigers insist Martin completed all that was required of him.
"(There's) nothing wrong with him. He did exactly what was planned for him," head of football Neil Balme told AFL.com.au.
Martin has missed just one game since 2014 – round 12 this season with a calf injury as he left to go to New Zealand..
In the session that lasted close to two hours, premiership midfielder Kane Lambert also failed to complete match practice.
Lambert, who only returned to the Tigers' line-up for the qualifying final win over Hawthorn after ankle surgery, played the first three quarters before receiving treatment.
After 15 minutes of massaging, Lambert left the field limping.
Small forward Dan Butler put himself in the frame for a preliminary final recall, having been out of the side since round 16.
Missing with an ankle injury before playing a half in Richmond's VFL clash on September 1, Butler kicked three goals in 15 minutes of match simulation.
Playing in what appeared to be close to Richmond's best 22 during the hit-out, Butler was the most dangerous option inside 50m, complementing crumbing teammates Daniel Rioli and Jason Castagna.
Midfielder Brandon Ellis also participated, but played for the 'reserves' side, which also featured Sam Lloyd.
Ellis was the unlucky Tiger to be omitted for Kane Lambert before last Thursday night's qualifying final victory over the Hawks.

But it turns out it's nothing to worry about according to the Club ...
Afternoons with Andy Maher @SENAfternoons
Richmond tells us that Dustin Martin is "fine" and that he completed his planned training session.

UPDATE: Rioli reveals Dusty's mystery injury

UPDATE: Richmond superstar Dustin Martin suffered a corkie in last week's qualifying final, teammate Daniel Rioli has revealed.
Eight days after the win over Hawthorn, Martin failed to complete Richmond's full-scale training run on Thursday morning.
The Tigers will play the winner of Saturday's semi-final between Collingwood and GWS in a week's time.
AFL.com.au cameras captured the moment Martin left the training track, doing a run-through on the sidelines before heading indoors.
"(Martin) will be right, just a little corkie, he got hit (last weekend)," Rioli told AFL.com.au soon after the session.
"He should be right, he's ready to go."

All good: Martin has a 'corky' but Tigers insist he will play
By Jon Pierik
The Age
14 September 2018 — 2:47pm
Dustin Martin did not fully complete training on Friday while Daniel Rioli jarred a finger but Richmond insist they will line up in next week's preliminary final.
The Tigers, with the week off after thumping Hawthorn in a qualifying final, were put through a two-session at Punt Road Oval on Friday.
Martin toook to the track but did not take part in the match simulation session, with Rioli telling the AFL website the Brownlow medallist had suffered a "corky" against the Hawks.
Richmond football department chief Neil Balme told Fairfax Media Martin had done what was expected of him.
"There is nothing wrong with him. Trained exactly as we planned," Balme said.
Kane Lambert, who had his first match back since ankle surgery against the Hawks, did not complete the simulation and had treatment on his ankle.
"He is good - did what we planned," Balme said.

It’s a corkie, I knew about this last Thursday night but didn’t post because even then it was always going to be something that wasn’t going to cost him a prelim.
On the other hand, a loss may well have made things interesting.
Can confirm that he still smashing it up at the gym saying have a corkie but we don’t stop 😬
-
Guys what's a corkie honest question is it like a bruise or something? .
-
You get one when you cop a big hit generally. Someone's obviously smashed into him the other night. It's pretty much a lump under the skin, gives you a nice limp if it's bad enough. Nothing one can't play through most of the time tho
-
Guys what's a corkie honest question is it like a bruise or something? .
Its a blunt hit to the belly of a muscle that causes internal bleeding in the muscle. Usually they won't even cost you a week, a really bad one might be 2 weeks.
But I'll refer to the resident docs.

a painful bruising injury to (a limb) as a result of a heavy blow.
The word is unique to the Australian vernacular.

Thanks for not forgetting about me but what you've said is essentially correct. However, Howe did miss something like 5-6 weeks (there was a trip to Perth and the bye before finals in there) due to a severe corkie that needed surgery. But that is an extreme example.

Martin dealing with "significant knee issue"
By SEN
17 Sep. 2018
SEN analyst David King has received mail that Dustin Martin’s leg soreness is worse than Richmond is letting on.
Martin left training early late last week with a reported corked thigh and King believes he will be limited come Friday night’s Preliminary Final clash with Collingwood.
“I had someone call me on the weekend and just sort of said there’s more to the Dusty story than we’re being told,” King told SEN’s Whateley.
“I think he’s got a significant knee issue, now whether the issue is a management issue, everyone’s got something at this stage, but their fab four has been pretty much unimpeded the last two to three years really.
“They haven’t missed games of football. You’ve got to keep an eye on this one. It’s a real story.”
The dual premiership player clarified he believes Martin will play, but wonders how the Tigers will use him if he is in fact limited.
“We’re not saying Martin won’t play, it’s what can he do and where can he play? The last two weeks he’s played 80 per cent in the midfield – does he have that volume in him?” he said.
Fox Sports journalist Julian De Stoop was at Richmond’s training session today and had his eyes fixed on the reigning Brownlow Medallist.
“He’s basically done nothing. He’s done a light jog a couple of times, but literally only sixty or seventy metres,” De Stoop told SEN’s Whateley.
“A normal session for Dusty is he trains with the group. He doesn’t get injured very often.
“This is the first session of the week and he’s doing nothing. So this is certainly a story and one that’s going to have to be watched closely during the week.”

-
Tigers defender Dylan Grimes played down concerns about the reigning Brownlow Medallist.
"I think he's fine to be honest," Grimes said before Monday's training session.
"It was a bit of a storm in a tea cup. He did exactly what he'd planned on doing.
"The same with Dan Rioli as well. They're both absolutely flying so no issues whatsoever."

Quietened down a bit in the second half, but I can’t remember any specific incident that would have caused it.

Martin will definitely play on Friday says Tigers footy boss
By SEN
17 Sep 2018
Richmond footy boss Neil Balme has rubbished reports star Dustin Martin is dealing with a “significant” knee issue, confirming he will play in Friday’s Preliminary Final against Collingwood.
David King told SEN’s Whateley today he had heard Martin is suffering a “significant knee issue”, but Balme has poured cold water on the report.
“I reckon I could nearly put my house on the fact that he will play on Friday,” Balme told SEN’s KB and The Doc.
“Of course he will…how many times do we have to say it? He has only missed four games in seven years. He will play on Friday.
“He did exactly what we needed him to do today, as he did Friday, and he will Wednesday and he will on Thursday.
“The only way he won't play is if someone kidnaps him and doesn’t let him go to the game.”

Spot on,
And he has become the ultimate professional! he would be doing his own stuff to make sure he is right, but in saying that- he has done enough training over the past season to have 2 weeks off so he is right, and he would probably be better off with the 2 weeks off!!
Bring on Friday already :help :help :help

David King on SEN said he received a phone call on Saturday saying Dusty didn't train Friday and if he didn't train on Monday it would be unusual. Julian de Stoop who regularly watched Richmond train throughout the year told him Dusty usually does all the training sessions. So King said when Dusty didn't train yesterday he simply put what he was told out there.

In other words, it wasn’t “mail”, it was just a spurious claim.

'Full throttle' for Dusty after 'significant corkie'
Jennifer Phelan
afl.com.au
Sep 19, 2018 9:53AM
DUSTIN Martin is scheduled to train at "full throttle" on Wednesday after a 13-day battle with a corked thigh that bled down into his knee, Richmond coach Damien Hardwick says.
The Brownlow medallist will test out the injury in the Tigers' main session at Punt Road and is expected to line up against Collingwood on Friday night.
Hardwick said the Tigers had considered having the injury drained this week but the amount of blood inside his knee joint meant it wasn't necessary.
"It was a pretty significant corkie with bleeding down into his knee that takes a little bit of time to settle," Hardwick said before training.
"At this time of year, we don't take any risks with training, so he'll be available to play this weekend.
"We'll get a fair indication [today] whether he's 95 per cent or 100 per cent – not many players are 100 per cent these days at this stage of the year anyway.
"We're confident he'll be at his best, he's had a great finals series and we're looking forward to that continuing on Friday night."
Martin has been limited at training since suffering the injury against Hawthorn on September 6 in the first final.
The Tigers went into denial mode on both Friday and Monday when quizzed on why Martin missed large portions of their training sessions.
After coming clean on Wednesday on the extent of the cork that had affected Martin's knee, Hardwick said he didn't expect it to affect the time his star spent forward and in the midfield.
"The way Dustin's role pans out on game day is probably dependent on the opposition," he said.
"At various stages we'll need him on the ball and at various stages we'll need him up forward.
"The injury is not that significant that it will change his role.
"He's battled through these things before. We've had the week off, so we haven't been in any rush to get him out to train to make sure he plays, we'll just take a very conservative approach.
"The reality is, he's not going to get any fitter or stronger or better now, so all we've got to do is get him to the line and make sure he plays."
Collingwood's Jeremy Howe missed four games with a badly corked thigh in the lead up to finals, with the deep hematoma needing to be drained to allow him to regain full movement in his leg.
Hardwick said Martin's was "a completely different" injury.

Cork thigh, doing some rehab today. He’s fine.
Just remember who to listen when posters and media weigh in with uninformed guess work
-
Apparently, draining Dusty's knee was considered as an option if required but it wasn't needed.
-
How did Butler look guys ? .
Julian de Stoop on SEN said Butler looked good. He mentioned something about kicking 3 goals which I presume must have been in a scratch match at training(?). They then got onto talking about the risk of bringing players in to play finals after a long lay off and how Cyril Rioli was brought in for the 2014 GF. Butler hasn't played seniors since R16 but he did play a half in the VFL a couple of weeks ago which de Stoop doesn't think makes it a big gap between playing if we make it through to the big dance. De Stoop doesn't see Butler coming in this week though.
-
Thanks mate. :gotigers
-
How did Butler look guys ? .
Butler trained today , went ok
Rioli trained but spent a lot of time on sidelines during match simulation
Tipping he may have broken finger, which was heavy taped
Should play though
-
Rioli said on sen that it was ligament damage in his finger but he’s ok. He said he just needs to drink a glass of cement so he can harden up.
-
RFC should be ashamed with the garbage they trotted out about Dusty
Boy did they get it wrong
Couldn’t walk at training a week ago
Balmey says all good
Couldn’t even run tonight
Like playing with one short
As for Astbury, had a spew in warm up and looked Pale
Yep he is right to go
Give us a break
-
Your fault we lost..... :shh
-
Short steppin' Lambert - VFL standard.... :shh
-
Did the Tigers tell a little porkie about Dusty's corkie?
Dustin Martin was never fully fit.
It started last Friday when Damien Hardwick was trotted out to the cameras to insist his superstar was fine and continued during the week with head of football Neil Balme laughing off concerns.
The reigning Brownlow Medallist never extended beyond second gear, lacked his explosive power and looked proppy. It turned into an easy night at the office for tagger Levi Greenwood, Martin offering little as he spent much of the night deep in attack.
Martin's metres gained average for the season was 454 pre-game, on Friday night he managed 175.
Clearances? He failed to register one for the entire night.

Actually have no issue with them playing him
If our delivery into our F50 was professional rather than amateur under 12's rubbish then plonking him one out in the goal square would have worked
The one I'm furious about is Astbury. He was non competitive all night. Garthwaite should have played

Was told thursday morn Astbury was in a bad way and if he wasn't picked, it would be Ellis to play. Turns out they should have stuck to that hey :shh Was a close call all the way up to an hour before the game
Astbury spent most of the day in hospital Thursday on a drip - should never have played last night.

you know that as fact?

Garthwaite lol, who would he have played on?
Ellis :shh

Maybe he could have defended the space in front of cox and came in and spoiled from the side like astbury should have been doing. Ellis would have added nothing to our defence yesterday which were absolutely horrible.
Should’ve been Garthwaite playing they never would of been B Ellis.
But our defence was only as bad as our mids let them be. No pressure on the Ball carrier at all. The pies smashed us in the midfield winning ball amd we didn’t pressure like we normally do. Instead we were the team under pressure. The ball was just coming in non stop.
Our defensive structure was stuffed too with Astbury a shadow of himself. Allowing them the luxury of degoey on Rance played into their hands. We all know Grimes should’ve taken him from the start. Rance then could just do what he does best but Collingwood won the match up. We were out coached and outplayed. Not going to stop Cox on a lead without pressure and defensive structure. Simple.

Collingwood's pressure was off the charts - Bellis would've spent the night in the fetal position under those conditions... :shh

you know that as fact?
Yep
Dimma mentioned it in his presser
-
Actually have no issue with them playing him
If our delivery into our F50 was professional rather than amateur under 12's rubbish then plonking him one out in the goal square would have worked
The one I'm furious about is Astbury. He was non competitive all night. Garthwaite should have played
This plus Conca lost it for us.
Yep.

Broke rule number one. Never play injured players in finals. It never works...... :banghead
-
Damian Barrett this morning said "we now know Neil Balme a liar" but he won't mind me saying that as "he'll wear that tag (re: lying for his club) as a badge of honour".

100% correct
Dusty playing was laughable
Couldn’t run one lap a week earlier and Balmey comes out and says nothing wrong with him , please Neil
Watch him at every stoppage on Friday night 😂
Could of played Snip Miles and at least he would of won a clearance
As for Dave , hospital one day , playing elite sport the next
Spare me please
