Do ruck numbers point to Tigers' big problem?

ESSENDON champion Matthew Lloyd believes Richmond must change its ruck set-up in 2019, saying Toby Nankervis was “monstered” by Collingwood’s Brodie Grundy.

Grundy recorded 56 hit outs, an all-time record in a final, dominating Nankervis (24 hit outs) and the 190cm Shaun Grigg (two hit outs).

“It’s not only about Grigg never playing ruck again, but I think Nankervis, if they’re fair dinkum, isn’t the number one ruckman next year.”

“They need to find a gun ruckman because I think he gets monstered by the greats.”

Against the league’s biggest and best ruckmen, Nankervis’ stoppage impact is affected.

Nankervis in 2018

AFL Ratings Points   Hit outs   Hit outs to advantage   Clearances

Average against Grundy,
Gawn, Martin, Sandilands          12.8             17.2             4.7                     4.0

Season average                        19.1             25.0             7.4                     3.4

From six matches against Grundy, Melbourne’s Max Gawn, Fremantle’s Aaron Sandilands and Brisbane’s Stefan Martin this season, Nankervis’ hit out average drops, but his clearance numbers are unaffected.

Nankervis also sees a big drop in his Schick AFL Player Ratings average against the premier ruckmen.

Collingwood won the clearances 45-37 and generated 60 points from clearances Friday night. Richmond conversely, only managed eight points directly from stoppages.

“They scored 10 goals from stoppages on the weekend, Collingwood,” Lloyd said.

“That’s unforgivable in a final for Nankervis and the midfielders.”

Nank just needs support that's all a ruck forward .Gun rucks like Grundy and Gawn don't grow on trees tell Lloyd you be serching a long time for a ruck of there quality.

Just need short term support for Nankervis while Chol & CCJ develop.....people seem to forget Gawn is 26 , didn't debut until halfway through his second year and didn't show much until about three years ago and only played his first full season in 2016, whilst Grundy was drafted the same year as Vlastuin... :shh

Nank does need support, but it isn't from another ruckman although that would be nice.

We went from being a contested possession beast side last year to 18th in the league for differential this year.

18th, worse than Gold Coast, worse than Carlton, worse than Freo.

You could have Brodie or Gawn or NicNat in our side and they would look average under those circumstances.

We don’t need another ruckman. Nank is a contested beast and he’s stull young. He will only get better as long as the club doesnt kill him from overwork.
He’s been extremely durable as he’s rarely missed a game. I think nearly everyone has forgotten when he dominated Grundy this season in the first game vs Collingwood.
Nank is a decent Ruck. He’s no Grundy and he’s no Gawn but he doesn’t need to be. He just needs to continue to compete in the middle and be handy around the ground.
What we need is Balta to come on and take Griggs spot on a wing and be the kind of utility we all dream about.
If Balta can take the next step we won’t need have the outlived experiment of Griggs uselessness as the stand in Ruck ever again and nankervis and the match committee will be able to rest easy knowing we won’t get slaughtered at stoppages because we will have someone that can actually compete.
Meanwhile CCJ and Chol can continue to develop just in case of injury.
