Title: Draft: Live pick trading
Post by: Diocletian on November 20, 2018, 09:00:41 PM
So I wonder what we'll do on draft night? From what Hartley's said it sounds like trading live picks is in our plans. Reckon we'd want at least another Top-30 pick. But how and from who? :shh

Gut feel only, but I think we might look to trade out reasonable picks in this draft for future picks, and look to bring in a few state league types in the rookie draft.

I reckon the Eagles might look to sell off their top 2 picks for something in the mid teens they have their eye on....

There is a school of thought over here that Jordan Clark might slip down towards pick 20. I am certain that he will not get past Freo at 17, and have it from an impeccable source that the Tigers were keen on him a month ago, but figured he will not get to pick 20.

Either way he doesn't get to the Eagles at 23, so if the Eagles are looking to trade up, I reckon it is because they see a chance to nab Clark.

It could also be to try and get Ian Hill, who is also tipped to slip down to the late teens.

Matt Clarke did say that they might be offered 2 picks in the 20's for their pick 17 but it depended on who was left on the table..... :shh

AFL website reckons there'll be no live trades in the first round:

...but we could use this situation to our advantage:

I am a fan of clark and I was hoping he would be our pick in the first round. hopefully he does slip and we can nab him.

Have heard Port and Adel will be clamouring over each other to trade up to one of the top 5 picks.

They might well be but they'll need at least Gold Coast to come to the party first.... :shh

After our pick, the order goes:

18. Brisbane
19. GWS
20. West Coast
21. Adelaide
22. West Coast
23. Melbourne
24. Gold Coast
25. GWS
26. Sydney (will be used for Blakely)
27. Western Bulldogs
28. Melbourne
29. Gold Coast
30. Brisbane
31. Fremantle
32. Western Bulldogs

So there's potential to trade with Brisbane (18 & 30), GWS (19 & 25), West Coast (20 & 22), Melbourne (23 & 28), Gold Coast (24 & 29) and less so the Bulldogs (27 & 32).

GWS:         948 + 756 =  1704 pts
WCE:         912 + 845 =  1757 pts
Brisbane:    985 + 629 = 1614 pts
Melbourne: 815 + 677 =  1492 pts
Gold Coast: 785 + 653 =  1438 pts
Bulldogs:     703 + 584 =  1287 pts

The value of our first two picks are 17 (1025 pts) + 37 (483) = 1508 pts.

So Melbourne's 23 & 28 is the closest.

Will the player we want at 17 still be on the table at 23?
