Welcome to Punt Rd, Jack

Jack Ross (Oakleigh Chargers)
186cm
85kg
Balanced Midfielder
STRENGTHS: Inside/outside mix, aggression, ball winning, efficiency, speed
IMPROVEMENTS: Endurance, tackling
SUMMARY: Jack Ross is a player who has flown under the radar to put together a very impressive year amongst a raft of stars in the Oakleigh Chargers midfield. A TAC Cup mainstay, Ross has shown signs of an all-round midfield game with a good mix of aggressive ball winning, and outside class to deliver well by foot. Given he wins his fair share of contested ball, with an average of 5.4 clearances while kicking the ball long 28.7 per cent of the time, Ross’ disposal efficiency is highly impressive and a testament to his decision making when given time and space. That mix of class and aggression is rare, and puts him in good stead for making an impact at the next level with his 86.7kg frame. Given his power, Ross’ 20m sprint time of 2.95 seconds makes sense, but he could look to use that more when bursting from packs. Despite his aggressive approach, Ross can also improve on his tackling numbers, averaging just 2.4 as a midfielder who often finds himself in the clinches. As a power-based athlete, endurance is also something Ross should improve to become a more dominant midfielder and run out games with more than his average of 20.5 disposals. There is not much Ross can’t do as a midfielder though, and he looks like a ready-made prospect.

Here is a summary of what Richmond fans can expect to see from Ross on-field...
Club: Oakleigh Chargers
State: Victoria
Height: 187cm
Weight: 87kg
Jack is from the Oakleigh Chargers/Caulfield Grammar and first displayed his talents as captain of the Vic Metro U16 side in 2016. This year he displayed strong form in the midfield with Oakleigh and won their Best and Fairest, despite only playing 12 games, averaging 22 possessions and 5 clearances a game.
He is a big-bodied midfielder who excels in and around the ball. He has great composure with ball in hand and is one of the better handballers in this year’s draft. He tested very well for speed at the State Combine and uses it to break away from stoppage.
We are very happy with the addition of Jack to our midfield group. He is a fantastic size for an inside midfielder, has football smarts, skill and leadership.

Ross storms home to claim best and fairest
Toby Prime,
Monash Leader
October 10, 2018
OAKLEIGH Chargers’ inside midfielder Jack Ross has kept his AFL draft ambitions alive after a blistering finish to the TAC Cup season.
Ross rounded up a crack field in the last couple of rounds to take home the James Honey Medal as the club’s best and fairest.
The Waverley Park Hawks junior topped the charts with 67 votes, 10 clear of Collingwood Next Generation Academy prospect Isaac Quaynor. Matthew Rowell, touted as an early candidate for the No.1 pick in the 2019 draft, rounded out the top three with 53 votes.
Ross captained Vic Metro’s under-16s team at the 2016 national championships but was overlooked for under-18s honours this year.
The 18-year-old responded to his omission with a flourishing finish to the season to earn a state combine invitation.
Five of his 12 TAC Cup games came in the last month of the season, averaging 25 disposals in that time to help propel Oakleigh to the grand final.
Ross said he used the disappointment of his Vic Metro snub as motivation for the second half of his season.
“I did dwell on it for a couple of nights,” Ross said.
“It was pretty upsetting but then you’ve got to look at the bigger scheme of things and the bigger picture.
“It was straight to business after that and getting down to the second half of the season.
“Individually, I was really happy with the way things worked out and I was a bit surprised with the end result at the best and fairest.”
At 186cm and 85kg, Ross thrives on the contested side of the game.
“Obviously my size is one of my strengths and my competitive edge,” he said.
“I love the contested side of the game and I think I have a pretty unique feature with that willingness to throw my body around for the better of the team.”
Oakleigh coach Leigh Clarke praised Ross’ mindset in overcoming the disappointment of not making the final cut at Vic Metro.
“I now have a role model to drive kids who don’t make Metro,” Clarke said.
“He did exactly what you need to do when you don’t make Metro and that’s to keep going out and dominating your role like he did.
“Some are really flat because they see it as the next step in the dream when it’s not always the case.
“He’s been nothing but positive about the way he went about it.”
Clarke said Ross would be a “really good acquisition” for an AFL club.
“He has the physical attributes and footy smarts,” he said.
“I’d really love to see how he develops once he’s got that real look inside an AFL club because I think he’s someone who could play AFL footy pretty quickly.”

Ross, who lined up with the Oakleigh Chargers in the TAC Cup, stands 186cm and has plenty of development left in him after having several interrupted pre-seasons.
"He was really excited when we went to his house and spoke to him. We think he's got significant upside," Clarke said.
"He's obviously had some injuries over the pre-seasons, for the last three or four."

-
“Jack’s another big, strong, powerful, inside mid. He’s got some good speed, he’s strong, wins clearance, he’s got nice hands. He can do a lot of things. He’s had some injury history the last few pre-seasons, so he hasn’t been able to get out on the park and do a really strong pre-season and get his running up where he wants it to be. But we’re really confident that he’s the right type of character that’s going to buy into the program and improve quickly as well.”

Really like the look of this lad.
-
Every year I hope we'll find another Jack Graham.
This kid looks the best bet for 2019 :)
-
I think he is a Graham with more pace and finds the footy a bit more.
-
Jack sounds like a very switched on and goal orientated individual in his draft video which has just been posted. Got a bit of Dusty about him too.

Apparently this kid flew under the radar. :rollin

An early call roger that will go close to being on the money based on his game yesterday :clapping.

Ross to debut against Port Adelaide
Mitch Cleary,
AFL Media
Apr 11, 2019
Senior coach Damien Hardwick has this morning confirmed Jack Ross will make his AFL debut this Saturday against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval.
Ross, 187cm and 87kg, was selected at pick no. 43 overall in the 2018 national draft, and is the first of Richmond’s 2018 draft class to gain a senior berth.
A big-bodied midfielder who shows great composure with ball in hand, Ross comes into Richmond’s round four side after strong recent VFL form.
We've loved the way he plays, he's tough, he's hard, he brings a real Richmond attitude to the way we're going to play this ball game," Hardwick said on Thursday.
"I think he's one of those kids that slept with a footy when he was a young kid.
"He's a very quiet lad but he plays the game in a brutal way and I think Richmond supporters are going to fall in love with him."

He was barking orders.
Getting to contests.
Clean.
Hard.
I think we have something in this bloke if he carries it over to AFL level.
Good luck to the kid.

4 marks (1 contested)
4 clearances (1 centre)
3 first possessions
5 tackles
3 inside 50s
4 clangers
What a debut! :clapping

Huge for the future of the club. Simply outstanding.
-
Has to be one of the best debuts I have seen for the club, especially given the responsibility he took on with our key midfielders out.
Mind you, Dean Polo had a good debut too, even got 3 Brownlow votes for it I think..…..
Just stick with it young Ross.

Damn looks like Walsh will beat him to rising star nom this week.
I won't be surprised if they give it to Walsh because he was the No.1 draft pick but if they do they'll ignore that Ross on debut played a key inside mid ballwinning role in an injury-ravaged team winning against the odds interstate and the fact our team on the weekend was so much younger and inexperienced compared to Carlton (who lost to a younger Gold Coast side).
Average Age Games Experience
Richmond 23y 343d 1634
Carlton 24y 313d 1832
Carlton had 7 players 28+ to Richmond's 2.
Ross is also two months younger than Walsh.

“I just wanted to take it quarter by quarter, so I’m pretty happy with the end result. I just focused on doing the team things and hopefully getting over the line, which we did,” Ross said.
“I actually wasn’t really that nervous leading up to the game. I think the JLT games that I had earlier in the year held me in good stead.
“I just wanted to get around the boys when I felt a little bit nervous, just talk to them, see how they deal with it, and from there just led into the game.”
“The camaraderie around the team and the celebration that we had there in the post-game, I’ve never experienced anything like that . . . It was an awesome experience."

Fair enough too. Walsh was extremely good against the Suns.
We also want to make sure young Ross doesn't start supping his own bathwater.

I did notice he was on the pine a lot in the second half.
Not sure if he got a knock or the club just protecting him a bit??

Looked like he mainly had a run with role on Kennedy in the second half....did alright too... :shh

Thats what I thought as well but I was only watching the game at The Blackburn Hotel. Lots of Richmond supporters there all cheering they boys on and sometimes as per usual being a bit critical of some players.

Think Dio was the one who mentioned it, but love how he gets his arms up in a tackle to be able to dish off a handball. Was a bit sloppy with his disposal today but another very good showing from the young man. Hope he gets recognised.

Why aren’t we playing him ahead of B.Ellis? Especially considering the rhetoric of players that are adhering to the so called “Richmond Way”.
Is he ready? Can we expect to see him any time soon or is he not ready yet?

Because he’s not ready and doesn’t have the tank for vfl let alone afl yet. Ellis has been good the past few weeks, give it a rest.

RCD's not ready yet..,still needs to bulid his tank and learn a few of the finer points of playing midfield at senior level...I'm confident it will happen sooner rather than later....went from only getting 11 touches in his first competitive match to getting 18 in his second which is encouraging... :shh
EDIT: More an outside mid but start getting excited about Fraser Turner too just quietly... shh :shh

Tigiritis, You can’t see the forest for the trees mate.
Ellis HAS been dropped, worked hard on his game and is now making a valuable contribution (which I can barely believe I’m saying). That is the Richmond way - which is what Menadue, Garthwaite, Butler will do and Oleg will do when he gets back from injury.
We need all players to work hard on their deficiencies and then be rewarded - which is exactly what he has done.
It’s why we have been the best side in the comp over the past 2 years and why we have depth while our best players are injured.
It makes us a huge threat again this year.
Players who work hard on the 2’s, get promoted and have impact in the seniors should be celebrated - whether they are in their first, second or tenth year.
It is what is making our club great lads.

I agree with what you are saying.
I and I’m sure most of us would all agree, we would all rather see players in the mould of Stack, Ross etc. than scardy cats that flinch at the contest and are fearful. That said Ellis was good last night.

Is it weird that this kid looks like our best midfielder at the minute.
-
It is the time he has to make his decision and execute. Only the really good players have this time. A bargain at #43
And on RCD we have him playing center in the seconds as part of his development. We can wait and allow him to build his game. The few glimpses he showed in the JLT series indicated he has the tools.

Jack Ross has signed-on for two more years at Tigerland.
Ross, a big-bodied midfielder is now contracted to Richmond until 2022.
Jack Ross, the Club’s second round selection in the 2018 National Draft (no. 43 overall) played five AFL games in a row after debuting in Round 4, until he suffered an ankle injury in Round 8.
A skilful stoppage player and clean ball user, Ross was averaging 21.2 disposals, 7.2 contested possessions, 3.2 clearances and 4.5 inside 50’s prior to being hurt against Fremantle.
The midfielder is set to return to the playing field this weekend, after an 11-week stint on the sidelines recovering from a syndesmosis injury.

While Cripps finished with 37 disposals, Ross limited his impact at stoppages to four clearances and held him scoreless.
The young Tiger finished with 21 disposals, 20 pressure acts and six clearances of his own.

Jack Ross Speaks About Being Left Out Of The Grand Final
MMM
24 Nov 2019
Richmond midfielder Jack Ross joined Dead Set Legends yesterday and touched on the heart ache of missing out on a premiership.
Ross was held back from playing in the VFL Grand Final the week earlier and looked to be in contention to play in the AFL Grand Final with fellow on-baller Jack Graham going down with a shoulder injury in the preliminary final.
However, the Tigers opted to roll the dice on debutant Marlion Pickett to play on the last Saturday in September on the back of his best on ground performance in the VFL the week prior.
Ross revealed how much it hurt to be left out.
Listen here: https://www.triplem.com.au/story/jack-ross-speaks-about-being-left-out-of-the-grand-final-152085

Jack Ross impressed as a contested ball-winner in his first season, but is looking to add to his outside game in 2020. He has slimmed down in a bid to add to his game, with the club believing his clean ball use will be of benefit breaking from packs.
https://www.afl.com.au/news/320626/where-s-your-club-at-injury-list-training-latest-who-s-flying
-
Don’t expect too many changes at the Tigers, however a slimmed down Jack Ross could be set to play more of an outside role. Ross, who last year burst onto the AFL scene as a brutal inside midfielder, has cut a lean figure at Richmond training over the off-season. That might help secure him a spot in the best 22 next season.

Boo. I wanted him to buff up even more.
-
Jack Ross has shed the kilograms in order to add to his seven senior games last season and put his hand up for a place on the wing next year.
"He came into the club in good shape, but he's a big boy," Hardwick said.
"I think he's lost about 7-8kgs since he started, so he's covering the ground really well.
"That was a little bit of a knock on him when we first brought him into the football club, that endurance wasn't a strength of his. But we look at him now, we had him horribly mistaken.
"He runs really, really well. We're excited about what he's going to bring, because he's a first-class kid who oozes leadership, skill and decision-making.
"He's one of those guys who makes players better around him. He's going to be a good player for us for a long time."

Fmd if he's lost that much weight he'll be around 187cm and 77-78kg. Menadue Mk2. Couldn't bruise a grape!
All for him being fitter and faster but I hope he has some bulk again in future so we can play him + RCD as mid bulls.

Not unusual for some players to drop weight in first few years as they transform their bodies under elite training. They then add bulk.

The player under the gun at your AFL club in 2020
March 2, 2020
by Fox Sports
From the competition’s biggest names to snubbed teenage guns, players right across the AFL have a reason to be fired up going into 2020.
Failing to live up to expectations causes frustration between supporter groups, while others are underperforming when they need to step up.
Foxfooty.com.au outlines the player from your club with a point to prove this season.
RICHMOND
Jack Ross is truly one of Richmond’s biggest hard luck stories. Pulled out just hours before the VFL Grand Final following two injuries to AFL players in the lead up to the AFL Grand Final, Ross was forced to sit on the sidelines as his teammates lifted the trophy at Ikon Park. With onballer Jack Graham ruled out with a shoulder injury, all signs pointed to the like for like Ross getting an AFL Grand Final berth. However, the Tigers handed Marlion Pickett a memorable debut meaning the teenager would miss out on any medals for the season. Ross has shed plenty of kilograms in the off-season as he improves his running, wanting to break in and become a permanent member of Damien Hardwick’s side.

I don’t recognise him! He looks pretty skinny! Kinda like Clayton Oliver after his first weight drop
-
Got to improve his kicking inside 50. He just bombs it long too often, RCD does the same. Hopefully this comes with some experience & confidence.
-

It would also help if the forwards that were there were not playing from behind all night
-
If Prestia can start hitting forwards on the tit like he did all throughout the latter half of the year then there's hope for everyone... :shh
-
Tough teenager Ross returns for his first game since Round 22, 2019. The 19-year-old has recently been trialled at half-back, a role he played well in last week's scratch match against Collingwood.

-
I would rather him inside mid
-
if you think this tosser can play then youre a bigger tosser
-
The kid can't kick, 3 shocking turnovers that quarter.
-
Id rather we see the likes of Dow and Balta than ross and some of these blokes playing in our jumper tonight have been drinking theirbown bath water.
-
Stick a mid-paced pure inside mid at half-back then wonder why you're not getting any run... :shh

Agree with that he is a in and under midfielder.
-
He started in the guts. Come on now.
-
Average player. Another Jack Graham without a 3 goal GF to his name

......and? :huh

Your criticusm of Jack Graham is unwarranted and unjustified. Jack Graham has been better than you suggest and his performances in big games has been excellent including last yearsvl finals where he played with a busted shoulder for three quarterdls which allowedbusbto go through to the grand final.
-
It is just one game folks. Ross has showed some promise no doubt
-
He started in the guts. Come on now.
......and? :huh
I just don’t think the excuse of being played out of position flies.
He showed a bit last year but he looked slow and unskilled at times last night.
-
Wasn't really excusing him....he was poor, no doubt about it... :shh
-
Fair enough.
-
I will say though - he hasn't been the same since Avatar fell on his ankle... :shh
-
That’s a really good point. Also isn’t he lighter this year?
-
Arguably our second worst behind Stack and still played better than Graham has been ....still like to see him to get a decent run of games.... :shh
-
Agreed. He was just ok.
What’s up with Stack? Looks really uncertain at times.
Not sure if it’s confidence or fitness or both...
-

Squibbed it a few times- was particularly noticeable in the third- which leads me to believe it's more the former than the latter as he demonstrated last year that he's not soft... :shh

Hmm. True, he showed plenty of courage and poise last year but he’s been nowhere near it this year.
Still only a second year player and I have faith that he’ll turn it around.
-
Needs to bulk up again...seeing him stand next to Dusty during the song really accentuated just how much the club's made him trim down(assume it was them)...wonder if it was to lessen the stress on his foot after the injury? An outside player he clearly ain't...:shh
-
I think he is going ok.
He really got stuffed over last year losing his spot in 2 flag sides, so mentally he may still be getting over the pain of that.??
-

Trim him down then build him up properly. Wait til you see him in 2022
-
Last 2 games no way near enough needs more impact in games.
-
Jack (Riewoldt) on 3aw said Jack Ross being a young bloke came to a Club with already a good midfield and he had to find what he had to do to find his position in the side. Over the past fortnight has found that position for him in the side.
-
Spot on settled in nice complements Cotch,Martin and etc.
-
Kid can play and will be a good one... :shh
-
How is Jack travelling?
He must be very frustrated.
Will he be the replacement for Prestia, Cotchin, Lambert in case of injury or retirement?
Surely he is a must keep on our list but he must be wanting a regular game.
-
Showed some good signs this year after indifferent form at times last year. Both him and RCD are important to our future as inside mids. Cotch has one more year and Dusty will start to play more forward. Their time to shine will come in the next year or so.

Agree. :thumbsup

He needs to put weight on over summer. 5kg. Crash and bash
-
A caller into SEN mentioned that Ross has a personal running/sprint trainer and had already started doing his preseason. The caller also added that he is future captain material.
-
Cute. Hope he puts some muscle on too.
-
He needs to put weight on over summer. 5kg. Crash and bash
Still reckon the fitness guys stripped him down and are rebuilding him correctly for the role he is ear marked to play
-
Good story on nine news but question is which midfield spot does he take:
Dustin - N
Trent - N - when rested maybe
Prestia - N
Edwards - N
Lambert - Different position
Bolton = N
Graham - Possible
Pickett - Possible
Kamdyn - Possible
-

Probably true. They were very slow putting weight on Edwards too, not that he ever got that big.
I see Ross as an inside mid. Hopefully he gets fit and they put muscle on him later.

While most Richmond players are still riding the high of their euphoric season, youngster Jack Ross has gone back to work.
After missing a second straight premiership, the 20 year old is putting in the hard yards to ensure he doesn't miss the next one.

Jack Ross (Richmond)
Much like at a delicatessen, young midfielders at Richmond need to take a ticket and wait in line patiently for their turn.
The Tigers have some really nice young talent, with young players Riley Collier-Dawkins, Thomson Dow and Will Martyn all hoping for some regular senior footy this season, but all have to wait behind Ross for a spot in the midfield.
Into his third season, Ross has really impressed those watching Richmond during the preseason with how hard he has worked to get into senior midfield shape.
Having missed out on the 2020 Grand Final, Ross is at the front of the line for a midfield opportunity and looks set to feature prominently in 2021.

-
Tigers youngster Jack Ross then racked up eight disposals in just over a quarter, providing additional run through the midfield having come on for the stricken Nick Vlastuin as the reigning premiers eased to a 25-point victory.
"Jack Ross was terrific," Hardwick said. "There's no doubt, you could tell the difference between both players. Jack was very good when he came on and he made a difference straightaway.
8 disposals (6k, 2h, 2c, 7u, 75% eff.)
2 marks
4 tackles
1 centre clearance
5 inside 50s
200 metres gained
6 scoring involvements
1 goal assist
23% game time
Source: AFL website.
-
Fluffed one kick then was involved in some good chains of play, which the 6 score involvements shows.
Moving him from possible to probable
-
Good in the clearances. Has to play next week
-
Would like to see him get a full game. 4 tackles in 23% game time is awesome.
-
Thought he was very good.
Like most of them last his first disposal was poor, after that very good
That kick to Dusty one on one in final qtr was brilliant
-
I like the way this kid competes. He got a future and continues to improve and impress with his work in the contest.
-
Coming on fresh against tiring players you would expect him to get a bit of ball and be involved.
Did what was expected imo only issue remains his delivery at times.
-
How did we all Ross' return to the seniors?
10 disposals (3k, 7h, 3c, 7u, 80% eff.)
1 mark
4 tackles
1 clearance
1 inside 50
1 tackle in50
1 intercept
133m gained
3 score involvements
76% gametime
-
Expected him to shine but was underwhelming to say th least. Hopefully just needs a block of 3-4 games to get into the flow of AFL level footy again.
-
First half he was excellent.
I gave him a rwp for it.
2nd half MIA
Clearly I mozzed him, so it's my fault
Sorry folks. :-[
-
I actually noticed him more in the second half than the first...,main thing I remember him from the first half was giving away Port's first goal and making the initial mistake that led to their second... :shh

Young mids exposed last night across 4 quarters. Ross had 14 touches to half-time but just 4 in the second half.
-
Kicked two goals and um....yeah.....kicked two goals...kicked two goals he did....
-
As my old man used to say “he’s not worth two bob”
-
Poor game considering he played 90 minutes. His pressure wasn’t even up to standard.
His two goals were good but he’s just not up to this level yet.
I would drop him too but luckily for him Rioli, Naish and Ralphsmith were worse much worse players.
Three changes are an absolute maximum for Hardwick I’m not sure he’s ever made that many.

On the outer: Why can't he get a game for your club?

Jack Ross (Richmond)
Once again, Jack Ross has been right on the cusp of the team, a regular refrain across his two and a half seasons on Richmond's list. On the surface, it appears he's having his best year yet, already recording nine games (having played seven each in 2019 and 2020), but three of those nine he was an unused medi-sub and replaced injured players on another two occasions. Ross has been unable to find a heap of the footy in his full matches, with Riley Collier-Dawkins the preferred young midfielder of late.

The players at your club struggling to break-in - Jack Ross
When assessing Jack Ross’ season by season trend, it doesn’t look as promising as it previously was for the young midfielder.
Ross, 20, played seven games in each of his first two seasons and so far in 2021 has tallied just six (not including times spent as the medical sub).
By now, many would’ve expected Ross to have grabbed a regular starting spot, but instead he seems to be used in a bit-part role. He has had chances this year to cement a position when the Tigers midfield has been depleted but just didn’t quite grasp them.
That being said, he’s only young and there is a bit to work with evidenced by three 20-plus disposal games in his first season.
https://www.sen.com.au/news/2021/06/23/the-players-at-your-club-who-are-struggling-to-break-in/
-
That sounds ok if we had played him the midfield but in his games this year he has seen limited midfield time.
-
What did we all make of Ross' game today?
He had the second most disposals (mostly uncontested) and the most marks and metres gained.
25 disposals (13k, 12h, 4c, 21u, 64% eff.)
9 marks
2 tackles
1 clearance
4 inside 50s
3 intercepts
540m gained
5 score involvements
79% time on ground.
-
Not great but not bad for a bloke being played in a position completely unsuited to his strengths and skill set ... :shh
-
His disposal is a huge concern but his run and carry today was very good
Best game in a long time
-
He butchers it.
-
Has a good crack, has learned how to play half back reasonably well but it's absolutely absurd as to why they are playing him in an area of the ground where good ball use it imperative. Kicks better than castagna at least but so does WAT
-
Must go, can't kick. Not interested in midfielders who can't kick. All due respect but should look to upgrade him next year in some way.
-
Want to try him as an extractor. Nothing wrong with an inside mid who handballs it more often than not.
But he needs to put on weight and play inside along with Graham etc.
-
Want to try him as an extractor. Nothing wrong with an inside mid who handballs it more often than not.
But he needs to put on weight and play inside along with Graham etc.
Agree with this. He along with Graham need to start playing in the middle as this is their strength not as flankers. Ross could be a handy mid if he can put on another 5kg in the off season.
-
Got ragdolled badly
-
Got ragdolled badly
Most of the team got ragdolled badly, including blokes bigger and far more match hardened & experienced than Ross...just like last time we played Geelong.... :shh

Dont disagree, but i reckon the club got him to trim down to play wing
He caertainly hasnt looked as strong as he did in his frist season.
-
His kicking is a issue tho.
-
I think people need to realise this kid is still only 20.
His Clearance and contested ball numbers along with tackling is way down. Obviously this happens because we just have not played him inside.
Not prepared to write him off given his age and where we are playing him.
Biggest problem is his kicking but if played inside this becomes less of an issue.I also think at 20 he will learn to kick within his limits.
I sort of get why hes been played more outside. they obviously thought he needed to be more involved and find a bit more ball and some easy ball on the outside would help.
If has continues to stagnate next year maybe then would be the time to look at his spot.
-
How did we all see Ross' return to the seniors?
24 disposals (13k, 11h, 11c, 12u, 70.8% eff.)
5 marks (1 contested)
4 tackles
4 clearances (3 centre clearances)
6 inside 50s
448m gained
7 intercepts
1 score involvement
79% time on ground.
Will he remain a Tiger on the back of that?
-
Good inside mid.
-
Surely in our plans moving forward. Liked the look of him with more midfield time, thought some of the skills learnt as an intercepting HBF actually helped during his time in the middle.
-
Played well today.
-
Agree with others that he looks a lot better as a pure mid, rather than a flanker.
-
Must play solely as a contested mid, cant continue with the flanker outside role as he isnt quick enough
-
Step up to the challenge as inside mid , might have put himself into the plans for the future
-

^^^ this
Thought he was very good
-
Amazing what happens when you play blokes on their best positions...too bad we've realised this too late and he'll likely be demonstrating this further at another club while we bring in some dud like Narkle... :banghead
-
Was good. Been saying it for ages.
Just put 5kg on and be the battering ram we need.
-
If we lose Ross for Narkle not a good scenario IMO
-
One game here or there doesn’t do it for me, and especially against a bottom team. See Chol.
He has done nothing in his career to date.
-
He played in his true position- inside mid. Our centre clearance work was much improved with the injection of youth :shh
Loved his game :clapping
-
Not a huge fan but only 20. Has time
-

Hawthorn has been beating some decent teams in recent weeks so ladder position is no indicator.
Credit where it is due, unfortunately some posters are just looking for any small negative they can find to justify their own view without acknowledging what he did achieve.
-
i call it as "I" see it not as you or anyone else does.
He has proved absolutely nothing except in a game that meant nothing to both games.
Lets see how he goes in round 1, and then we can revisit this thread.
-
There's a clear improvement in his game when he plays on ball from when he's plonked out on the flanks ..if you can't see that you're just not paying attention... :shh
-
24 Disp, 4 tackles & 6 i50s in #JackRoss' last game of the season vs Hawthorn playing purely as an inside mid. Understand the club has been looking to expand his game but this was a reminder he does his best work in the traffic. Big year ahead for him & still have high hopes.
https://twitter.com/Tigers_of_Old/status/1473041341504385024
-
He also played as our defensive mid a lot of the time so the numbers were very good.
-
Jack Ross and RCD equal favourites for Brownlow 😎

Rather than looking at just the one good game which is nonsensical look at the entire year with open eyes.
15 games the reality it was more like just 9 with him being sub and not getting on the ground 4 times and he was sub for another two and played roughly a quarter. Also take into account the role he played i think thats called being objective.
Taking the above into account i think it was a poor season for him and its not just the lack of numbers but the turnovers are consistent.
Atm i dont think he addresses probably our biggest inside need and thats consistently winning clearances and imo he has not despite the Hawthorn game and maybe a couple of other times at any time really shown he is a consistent contested ball winner.
The plus side is he is still only 21 has gone thru two covid interrupted seasons out of his three and is coming to a stage yr 4 where he should be coping with the rigours of AFL.
For me atm at least he will nothing more than a foot soldier for us if he gets there.
Having watched the intra club game i have grave doubts about him and atm no way could you pick him for rnd one.
A player i hoped we would go after was Luke Dunstan yeah i can hear you all now StKilda hack etc etc but i wanted him because of the grave doubts about the likes of Ross and he really would have provided genuine inside depth and cover if we cop more injuries like last year.
Luke Dunstan 185/84 same size as Ross i think you can call him a money ball pick for Melbourne and i cannot see why StKilda let him go even with Crouch there.
Inside mid getting your hands on it inside, tackling when you dont and winning your share of clearances to me these are the priorities. compare his first three seasons to Ross
2014 Yr 1 disposals 18.75 - tk 3.75 - cl 3.06 - c/p 7.63
2015 Yr 2 disposals 17.05 - tk 3.68 - cl 2.95 - c/p 7.05
2016 Yr 3 disposals 17.39 - tk 4.78 - cl 3.50 - c/p 8.17
He stayed at a consistent level that enabled him to get 53 games in his first three years . Nothing great but good for a young player.
His fourth season he started to lift the standard a bit and that continued right up to last year. He only played one game in 2020 thru injuries.
2017 Yr 4 disposals 21.63 - tk - 4.94 - cl 4.00 - c/p 8.31
this has gradually improved to 2021
2021Yr 8 disposals 25.25 - tk - 4.92 - cl - 5.83 - c/p - 11.17
To demand a game imo Ross needs to get somewhere close to Dunstans yr 4. for a 4th yr inside mid its what i think most clubs would be demanding.
Personally at age 26 and 116 games Dunstan with our needs at stoppages and clearances would have been a good fit. There is no guarantee Ross will come on.
-
so far this year id sum it all up in a word. Underwhelming.
-
Claw, all sounds reasonable, however what message would delisting Ross over Dunstan send to the playing group. ?
I suspect you could be right but hoping you are wrong.
Come on Jack, step it up!!!!
-

Come on Jack, step it up!!!!
Not delist mate just get in a proven player and JR would really have to prove himself to get a spot.
I wanted a player like Dunstan in case Ross doesnt improve. As others have said so far he has done very little and if say Prestia continues to miss lots of games like he does most years then we need someone who can at least play, winning contested ball and clearances and have a presence on the inside.
Dunstans season in these areas were bordering on elite and he has continued to track upwards. StKilda got Crouch and his numbers almost mirror Dunstans for the year and he compared favorably with most big name mids going around.
I remember when Jarrod Lyons wanted out of GCS it was the same deal he had a good 4th year at Adelaide but wanted out for more opportunity. He went to GCS and had two very good seasons and then for whatever reason wanted out and ended up at Brisbane where he continues to improve and play well.
Lyons numbers this year were 28 disposals, 6.4 tackles, 6.2 clearances, 13.6 c/p Dunstan stacks up in these as he does with most.
Typical moneyball find not wanted but continual upward spiral with numbers that stack up against the best.
I can tell ya now neither Ross'S first three years or RC-D thirst three come anywhere near Dunstans early years.
Just my opinion but Dunstan would have been ideal cover and starting 22 and would have provided genuine depth while Ross and RC-D find their feet if they ever do.
-
Just wondering how Ross and RCD find their feet if we bring players in over the top of them??
-
Ross has rarely played in the ball hunting midfielder role, he has been played as the defensive midfielder hence his numbers don't look as good.
-
Ross should be delisted or traded come seasons end
-
Ross should be delisted or traded come seasons end
Ok will get the paperwork sorted out now, can you come in and sign it off??
He will be fine
-

It’s a business , not a charity .. if he doesn’t lift significantly, I agree with Francois
-
I could be wrong but they have played him out of position, To develop his engine and outside game.
He can play as an inside mid and needs to be given a chance before he is put in the recycle bin imo
-
Ross' stats today:
21 disposals (13k, 8h, 4c, 18u, 85.7% eff.)
6 marks
3 tackles
2 clearances .... ( 1 centre clearance )
2 inside 50s

8 score involvements
1 goal assist
1 free for
2 frees against
87% time on ground

I thought he was very good today
Needs to do it consistently. He cannot afford to play good game and go missing for the next 3 weeks
-
What an absolute spud of the highest order.
-
Disposal is pathetic and cost 3 goals in the last.
-
How can he get game's and had chances while Hugo and Dow alot better.
-

Heck I'd rather play Caddy over Ross after tonight, and that's saying something...
-
Ross, another player playing out of position.
He is a midfielder. Play him there.
-
Should be behind RCD and Dow.
-
Only a slightly better than Aarts in my opinion but Aarts gets a run in the middle ahead of him.
This proves the coach has no confidence in his ability in the guts and rather him on the outside.
I don’t think he has it. Clearly too soft and panics too much and turns it over too easily.
Not a fan.

Plenty of midfielders have been played in different positions over the years and flourished some even contributed until a midfield position became a more permanent position. We see this happen all the time.
Ross isn’t demanding a midfield spot. Too soft to play midfield and he’s a panic merchant. poos himself even on a wing. When I watch him play I wish we still had Brandon Ellis. :rollin
-
Crap post.
Assertions based on nothing but speculation and displaying the memory of a goldfish. :shh
-
I could be wrong but they have played him out of position, To develop his engine and outside game.
He can play as an inside mid and needs to be given a chance before he is put in the recycle bin imo
Sheesh we keep on getting belted inside and here we have Ross who can play inside apparently but we just refuse to do so.
Hmm if that is the case id say someone is getting things awfully wrong.
We need to be competetive at stoppages to little is left to too few and they sure as hell don't see Ross as the answer and to be honest neither do i.
-
He should be in the guts become a battering ram like cotchin. Just get the ball out. Thats all hed have to do.
-
I tend to agree , he is not a quarter back or running winger and Cotch is cooked by halftime
His way of playing is similar to Cotchins and you wouldn’t play on a wing or at half back
We need someone to stop the slaughter in the packs
-
I think Ross has enough chances, but who else is there.
Our problem was everything in the middle from contested ball to clearance work to setting up stoppages to ruck work. Got belted everywhere in the last. I don't think Ross improves us that much.
-
But he sees ball gets ball and spectate when around packs. Cotchin has done that role in the past and without meatball who’s our extractors , maybe Graham but someone needs to play the role
-
His debut is still the best game I’ve seen him play. Agree with others here that his best position is as an inside mid which is where he played in his debut season until his injury against freo if I remember correctly.
-

Not sure Jack Graham is the answer either.
I have never seen him dominate contested ball or win a lot of clearances so checked out his career stats.
I think in a way Graham is part of the problem because he consistently fails to make decent contributions in these areas.
-
Interesting point Claw. Does anyone have grahams clearance numbers?
Perhaps he needs to wear some of the criticism also.

1 clearance on the night.
4 - Nank
3 - Soldo, Cotch, Dusty
2 - Bolton, Prestia
1 - Graham, Ross, Aarts, Edwards, Grimes.
----
Total: 22
Cripps (8 ), Kennedy (8 ) & Cerra (6) had 22 just between themselves. Hewett and Pittonet had 4 each as well. De Koning 2 and Docherty 3.
Says a lot about our midfielders' ability to win the contested footy right now that our rucks end up as our main clearance winners :-\.

Seems to be a stat that conveniently seems to have not be included :whistle
Having made that observation
It is very easy to quote stat's and I get that but every player has a role. Some roles are not about the number of kicks, handballs.....
When you hear coaches talk about specific players and their roles within the teams then I can assure you it isn't all about stat's, not even close
But I also get that doesn't suit peoples narratives so I will leave it at that

So tell us WP what do you percieve Grahams role to be.
We use stats to confirm what we see. The talk was he doesnt win many clearances and the stats clearly back that up.
They actually show he is not overly inside but also that he is not overly great on the outside.
Here we are being belted inside and its not just about this week either and we play blokes as juniors who were good there in other roles. If its not the players fault then its the coaches.
There was talk of Graham being captain by some based on what? i ask.
-
I think Graham is a solid player. Was poor last year.
Talk of him captaining the club one day has been around since his first season. For mine, regardless of his capabilities to be a leader, I'd want significant improvement from him as a player before that ever occurred. Be a bit embarrassing if your captain wasn't in your best 22 every week

I would think the fact Graham was picked for round 1 without having played any footy in the end up games by the coaches says that 8n their eyes he is easily in our best 22.
Should he have played round 1, IMHO; NO! But that was the call they made and even Dimma admitted they got it wrong
As to the question as to what basis there was talk of Graham being Captain. It is because he Captained the SA under 18 state team as well as his club...he is a natural leader like Cotch was
Claw, as to what " I perceive Graham's rile to be"? Not perception but what has been said by the coaches at many functions I've been too or pre match briefing I get as part of my membership.
TBH I can't see the point of explaining as it won't suit narratives or the stats

I'm not saying he isn't best 22. When he's healthy and being used the right way, he is. Tough nut, great tackler and has reasonably tidy skills generally. But he's not and will probably never be in the top level of players at the club. Personally I want my captain to be a player who is impossible to ever consider dropping to the 2s. Graham in my mind has played poorly enough on plenty of occasions to warrant demoting. Bloke has my respect forever for being a premiership player and what he did for us in that preliminary final though

We can talk about the Ross' & the Grahams' for weeks on end but it is ignoring the elephant in the room. The bigger problem we have is that our preferred midfield (Cotchin, Martin, Prestia, Lambert, Edwards) are going over the hill but we keep them in the team out of sentiment. Don't get me wrong, I have absolutely loved what each of these guys have done for us over the years, but most of their best form is in the rear view mirror.
With Dusty going forward & staying there, we can play Ross as an inside mid. With Cotch going (err ... interchange ...) we bring in RCD, then rotate using Baker, Graham & Bolton. Inject some youth & pace into the middle & take some pain that comes with it, but we will be better for it in good time. We need to change the old guard & we need to do it now.
Many, many thanks to the old guard, but the time is now ....
-
Agree JP. Good post.
We will obviously need to target some top-end midfield talent in the upcoming draft too.

Spot on to be honest that's stating the obvious change needs to come champions or not we need to inject the new blood.

Hardwick & the Match Committee will likely rotate the youngsters throughout the year while playing most of the veterans every week but they really should be doing the opposite of that.... :shh

This is a great post respectful to the oldies but clearly acknowledging its time to play the kids.

Usual jack Ross game today, albeit slightly better than last week given he laid 3 tackles and not much else.
What was his game time?
-
He will be passed by the likes of Sonsie, Brown, Banks and Clarke. Its unfortunate but thats how I think it will work out.
-
I’m not seeing anything from him to be honest. All the talk about him being an inside mid and being played out of position well he didn’t win a clearance that I saw. Had opportunities when swapping with Dow in the guts but no good in there either. :thumbsdown
I think he’s a bust dime a dozen player that isn’t clean nor does he offer anything as a two way runner as he’s always slow to contests. Could really see his deficiencies today.
-
He was a bit fumbly for my liking today.
Has a dig for sure but I don't think he has what it takes unfortunately.
-
There were worse , it was an average game but may have had a role . 3 tackles is good if you compare to the rest of the side
-
Was better today but there was one incident in the last where he didn't go as hard as je needed too which was disappointing
His disposal again was a worry
But as I said much better today
Listening to Dimma's presser he was happy with him
-
At the ground it looked like a solid performance. Played inside and across the HBF at times. Solid in my book for sure :shh
-

Was at the game too
Not a fan of the HBF role, his disposal is to "iffy" for that
-
Not desperate enough, ball watches too much and hardly wins one on one contests.
-
Cannot see how people think that was a better game than last week. Was horrible again.
-
Can’t wait to see him play on the ball. I wonder what kind of poo he will serve us in that position.
One of the biggest duds I have seen since Hardwick came on board, and that’s saying something.
-
Started ok but too slow, can't kick and a poor decision maker. Doesn't bode well
-
It sad to think we have invested all this time into him as one of our future on ballers and it seems he doesn’t have what it takes.
-
Was actually good early but after that, ummm how do say, crap
-

Coached all the instinct out of him so that he could learn the team structure and play a HBF role of course.
-

mint he was pick 40, I expected exactly what i am seeing. Garbage. What is disappointing is others see something which is not there.
he is not a footballers hole.
-
Trouble is he needs to be very good inside and its not happening. Instead hes getting more of it outside and his pace and average disposal means we suffer.
I assume today he was playing as a mid or mostly inside but i just dont see it. today he had just the one stoppage clearance, just the three tackles and a miserable 4 contested possesions. imo these are the areas we need him to be good in.
-
Put him in the guts and leave him there...if he's still shyte at the end of the year so be it, delist him...but I'd rather lose because we're giving the likes of him, RCD and even Will Martyn a fair crack at it than persisting with the same old proven duds or running our aging stars into the ground... :shh
-
Fair call Dio can’t argue with that. Definitely with Rcd and Martyn anyway.
-
Miss his poise, maturity and no nonsense approach, it’s like he’s been playing for years.
:shh :shh

This bloke was solid tonight.
Few fumbled but recovered well and generally a quite serviceable game.
Credit where it's due!

What do they say about broken clocks?
He was pretty good tonight did some very good things that reminded me of 2019.
Let’s hope he continues to build his game on this sort of output.

we have seen this game from ross before. Means sfa and in fact i dont even think he played well at all.
Handballing to players who were hot is usual ross stuff.
Lets see him crap the bed next week.

Please. Ross is Ross and until he plays consistent football then he will be critiqued. If he produces good solid footy, like his other teammates have done for many years then guess what it will stop.
I have seen him play descent game, and tonight i thought was okay not great.
-
Ross' game last night:
19 disposals (12k, 7h, 8c, 13u, eff. 73.7% )
5 marks
6 tackles
4 inside 50s
7 intercepts
380 metres gained
5 score involvements
1 goal assist
83% time on ground
-
With four or five minutes to go in the match there was a passage of play where Ross appeared to be going half hearted and in that same passage of play Daniel went in hard and won the contested possession. If Ross is to win a spot in this team he needs to improve his efforts.

Haters will always hate. I can't understand why a Richmond supporter is death riding a senior player.

Good game, credit where credit is due , the challenge is to maintain the level and gain respect and trust

His best game this year
But it needs to be the norm, not the exception

This is spot on by the way. Ross is what 40 odd games in and people lauding what really is just an okay game.I suppose when your waiting for above average performances to become the norm people latch onto any old half decent performance.
Preferably he plays inside he wins 4 to 6 clearances lays 5 or more tackles gets around 10 contested disposals and manages 20 - 25 touches. and tht i would say is just average for most decent inside mids.

I didnt see any "Lauding" of his game. Most were saying he played ok or it was one of his best games. Thing is he improved and we should all want that, if he keeps improving then he will be a solid player. Thats a big "If" but you can only expect improvement one step at a time and people should acknowledge that step. Hopefully he takes a few more steps soon.
PS I though it was a OK game of his and one of his best. Still has a long ways to go though.
-
Looked like he belonged. It’s not relevant if it’s a one off but if it becomes that standard like say a Dan Rioli at half back then don’t expect craw to concede he’s got it wrrr wrrr wrrooo

He didn't cost us the game. There were so many that had little or no impact on the game. He was far from alone in having a shocker.

Must admit he was very poor tonight.

Jack Ross back doing Jack Ross things :banghead
Rinse and repeat :banghead

Oh he was bad yes, but there were about 10 to 12 that were bad also. Putting the loss on him is a bit simplified.
-
Have to agree here... Ross has played 1 good game out of 6. So much promise from his first game against the dees a few years back. Just hasn't adjusted to the game. Looks.like a VFL player when the game is up for grabs. Would rather see sonsie stink it up.
-
Blows my mind into a million pieces this guy has more than RCD.
Must be dropped for RCD, Pickett, Sonsie. My word.
-
Insert picture of 🥔 here

RCD is not the answer, there both average at best and skills aren't up to it.
Banks and Sonsie should come in.

Nobody was kissing his feet. Just recognising that he had a good game last week. Just like after tonight’s game I will say that he was very poor.

I described him as 'solid' ffs lol
Never said I wanted him in the team in the first place
-

Probably not but far out I'd like to see RCD will the chances Ross has had.

Same.
I know there are a few who are saying RCD won't make it but how will we ever know if he doesn't get a decent run of games?
Ross has been given many chances. RCD deserves the same
Actually it was just wrong thwt RDC was dropped after the WCE game. He deserved to hold his spot TBH. It appears for whatever reason the MC will not play RCD and Cotchin in the same side. Which is puzzling as Dimma keeps saying they see RCD taking over the Cotchin role :huh3

I’m not a fan of giving VFL players a chance unless they deserve it by showing consistently good performances at the lower level.
That said, If it means we don’t see Ross again then I’m coming around.
Bring in RCD and give him the same opportunities that Ross was given and see how he turns out but only if it means I don’t see Ross in our jumper again. :rollin

RCD had 9 games last year so he has had his chances. 14 possies on Friday arvo.
If Ross is nor up to it RCD is not the answer.
-
Ross has played 38 games
RCD has played 11
RCD should be given the same opportunities that Ross has been afforded. He clearly hasn't
I just want to see him in more than 11 games before saying he's "had his chances"
I didn't watch Friday's VFL game but I do know the week before they had him playing on the ruck to give Ryan a chop out. I think we all would agree RCD isn't ruckman

I'm not huge on being black and white on VFL form. Certainly helps.
But if it VFL team was getting belted and not getting decent ball to our forwards doesn't mean that we don't pick any forwards the following week. But agree in I'd be loving RCD to be ripping up VFL just don't think it always has to be that way.
-
Ross has played 38 games
RCD has played 11
RCD should be given the same opportunities that Ross has been afforded. He clearly hasn't
I just want to see him in more than 11 games before saying he's "had his chances"
I didn't watch Friday's VFL game but I do know the week before they had him playing on the ruck to give Ryan a chop out. I think we all would agree RCD isn't ruckman
Nah Dimma would rather gift games to a guy that continually fails in big moments and is a turnover king. Ross is the very definition of a VFL player that will never be good enough for AFL level.
-
hmm have not seen the game and have no intention of watching it. Going by reports and comments here it seems Ross had ANOTHER ORDINARY GAME.
That is the real point id say.
Lots of ordinary games and his good ones are usually just passable games at a level he he needs to be at all the time.
What id like people to acknowledge is that at best we have an average player to date and we should NOT be pinning our hpoes on him becoming a top liner for us.
If Ross RC-D Dow Martyn are nothing but average then we are in a world of trouble when the big boys are gone and we all know it won't be too long before they are gone.
This is not something that has suddenly raised its ugly head its been there right along along with the dearth of GENUINE KPP'S we have had.
Dont know how many times some supporters have been calling out for bigger better mids and talls to be drafted.
As i have consistently conceded to win three flags they had to get an awful lot right THAT MEANS MOST THINGS but they have also got more than enough wrong imo and list management in these areas is one of them.
-
There is no such thing as ‘awful lot wrong’ when it comes to winning 3 flags. Have they seemingly drafter some busts? Sure, but that comes with the territory of having higher draft picks by virtue of winning flags making the kids picked up far less of a sure thing. Of the 4 you named, Ross was pick 43, RCD was pick 20, Dow was pick 21 and Martyn was pick 44. Hardly top end draft picks.

Hmmm read again and stop choking on your weetbix every time you read a post.
I said an awful lot RIGHT which means most things but they had got more than enough wrong and list management in these areas is one of them. No matter how you want to spin it it is a correct statement.
Would you rather we all just adopt your attitude and post as if they have never gotten a thing wrong. Now you know thats not right they have got things wrong no matter how much you want to deny it. Lucky some of us see things for what they are.
By the way both Pick 20 and 21 are first round picks and as such top end picks, so wrong again eh. you may think them lousy picks but id take em every day of the week. By your logic picks 28 29 and 30 are poo picks and we should not be surprised if the players we took with them fail.
Just to finish i can see all of Martyn, Ross, RC-D and Dow being delisted at the end of the year or in Dows case later. that is how underwhelming they have been. Not just this year either. Outside of the old boys what mids does that leave. Just Bolton of any sort of quality and here you are saying we have got nothing wrong.
Talls and mid problems have not just magically appeared they have been there for years. We have years and years while success has come in to address these areas and all we do is keep on taking smalls and Flankers.
-
Lol you are such a negative Nelly. It’s been said on this forum by many people but you always always always focus on the negatives instead of the overwhelming positives.
We won 3 flags geez not sure what else you are expecting. There have been 3 other teams to win 3 flags in short succession. Both the lions and hawks dropped off to the foot of the ladder. Geelong have managed to stay up by largely ignoring the draft and topping up with mature age players and have been stuck playing the bridesmaid for 10 years now.
No1 is saying mistakes wernt made - you love to read things and make your own interpretation of things to suit your agenda. The recruitment team made mistakes as does every single recruitment team in the history of this sport however they were mostly straddled with later picks due to our success (I never said none were first round picks btw champ). If you have a look at the players that went around the RCD and Dow picks it’s hardly the whose who of top young talent however I’m sure you’ll make them out to be all future brownlow medalists.

Thoughts on this weeks game
Some impressive moments. Would have to go back and watch the tape again but my recollection is that he held his own in the guts and did a few nice things on the outside too. Stepped up tonight. He should find West Coast in Melbourne a doddle now.
25 possies and 6 clearances. And--inverting claw's Jack Graham rule--he didn't lay any tackles, which means he was never second to the farkin ball!!!
-
Was excellent in the heat of this battle. Worth persevering with, especially in the inside role. Made a couple of errors, but who didn't in this game?
-
Ross' best game for us since his debut. Would love tonight to be a breakout game. Just shows if he is to play at AFL level it needs to be as an inside mid. He's not a wingman and never will be.
-
Yep best game I’ve seen him play
-
I'll hold my praise until he strings together a few more like that. Yes he played well but....
We said the same thing a few weeks back and the 2 follow up games were woeful.
And I have to say that attempted little dinky kick in the final qtr after receiving the Lynch handball was oh so costly. Even more so because he had blokes streaming forward, a 30-40 metre kick would (should) have resulted in a score for us. Instead it was a turnover that cost us a goal
-
I thought he was great tonight. That should be the standard and he is so much better when playing in the middle.
-

Play him where he’s best suited. He’s a one dimensional player but showed that dimension is AFL standard
-
I've been a big critic of Ross. He has been played out of position which is on our coaches. But he was excellent today and good on him.
If there was an advocate for playing players to their strengths it was this. Same with Balta up forward. Keep things simple and play players where they are their best selves instead of trying to fill holes with square pegs.
Well done Jack keep it going mate.
-
Agree with all. Thought was excellent today - needs to stay an inside mid when playing for the seniors. If they want to replace a winger than pick someone else.
-
Like others his game improved as the game went on.
Very good game and one of the better ones I’ve seen him play. A very strong performance much like his VfL game the week before.
-
I don't want see him on the wing again fullstop.
-

fmd nothing but deflection and dribble.
Lol have never ever made any player out, ours or players taken around them to be future champs. But hey turn it into that if it helps you rationalise things.
Mostly its been how few Ross and RC-D types we take and how little the two have progressed since we took em.Nothing more bud, yet you continue to get your knickers in a twist.
so with ross at pick 43 what are the expectations when you draft. Hopefully a decent standard afl player which so far despite the Geelong game last night is not the case. At pick 20 with RCD 4 years in what is the longer term expectation?clearly better attributes than Ross with a supposed higher ceiling yet if anything he has been worse.
What is the bottom line with these two if they do happen to make it? Clearly there is no Prestia Cotchin there in fact where is the Prestia Cotchin type after all its that sort of quality that enabled enables us to be competetive. Are you saying your happy to go with Ross RC-D and Dow to take over and make us a power again. For me it has nothing to do about now but about where we need to be in 4 or 5 yrs time as far as im concerned we have had our moment in the sun its time to do some hard yards and make some hard calls.
The bottom line is it does not matter where your drafted its all about what you do once you get there.
So we don't get things wrong yet we play Ross on a wing when we do play him and its similar with Dawkins. Was it not Dimwit who supposedly came up with the notion of making it fun and playing them in their best roles to give em best chance to succeed way back at the start of 2017. Seems to me he has forget that lesson with these two, yet you think we dont get things wrong.
What is not to criticise with both to date yet i am yet to call for either to be delisted just pointed out their weaknesses.
wont take it further than that except to say two things. yes you post like we have never made a mistake and when anyone points out a mistake you get cut up rather than acknowleding we should have done better.
Lol i was happy to win one flag yet alone three. Yet here you are accusing me of expecting more when im one of few who have said we cannot win another with the aging group we have. its funny im not the one bringing up our flags in this. Clearly your expectation is for many more with this group.
Why is it so hard for some just accept straight down the line honesty. You really do know deep down we do get things wrong it would be nice to hear you talk about them rather than constantly refuting we get anything wrong.
-
Hmm on the game most gutted ive been in years. On Ross im with WP he needs to make that the norm did enough to keep his spot lets see if he can string two together.
-
Ross’ work ethic across the four quarters was excellent and he used the ball effectively, creating opportunities for teammates.
The 21-year-old, playing his 39th game of AFL football, was one of the Tigers’ best in their three-point loss.
He finished the match with 25 disposals, nine contested possessions, five marks, three inside-50s, six clearances, two centre clearances, three intercepts, four score involvements and 257 metres gained.
His performance through Richmond’s midfield was all the more meritorious considering the absence for the big clash of veteran Tiger stars Trent Cotchin and Kane Lambert, plus the concussion suffered by gun on-baller Dion Prestia early in the contest.
Without that talented trio, the Tigers needed Ross to help fill the midfield void.
The fact he was able to have an important impact in the Richmond engine-room, against a team of Geelong’s quality, should provide him with plenty of confidence for his future at the game’s highest level.

The Undroppables: Who is a lock to play in Round 16
Andrew Slevison
SEN
28 June 2022
Jack Ross (Richmond)
The 21-year-old seems to be used largely as a replacement for any injured Richmond midfielders.
He has been in and out of the team in 2022, but took his chance in Saturday’s narrow loss to Geelong.
He played the first three games of the season, was an unused medi-sub in Round 4, and added a further three games before he was dropped prior to Round 8.
Ross was granted a reprieve in Round 10 before again making way prior to Round 12, but was called up for the Cats clash after some sparkling VFL form and to replace the injured Trent Cotchin.
The former second-round pick had arguably his most accomplished game as a senior Tiger, collecting a season-high 25 disposals, an equal career-high six clearances (two out of the centre), and made good choices by both hand and foot evidenced by his 84% disposal efficiency.
He did, however, fail to lay a tackle which will no doubt be a focus on the track this week.
With Cotchin still sidelined with a cracked collarbone, Ross is a certainty to retain his spot in Damien Hardwick’s 22 for this weekend’s meeting with West Coast.

the ross of old is back.
His game was very average. 2/10
-
That kick to Jack was a beauty
-
Thought he was solid. Not as good as last week but still much better playing on the inside than out on the wing. Also his kicking has been very good these last couple of weeks, maybe he’s a better kick than all of us thought he was.
-
Not up to standard and in a way a trend has a good one and then very little or just enough to escape criticism.
We got belted at clearances and contested ball i wonder who that comes down to.Here's a novel thought maybe its our inside mids.
-
A dominat ruck also helps crawski but let’s not have facts get in the way
-
Got his arse handed to him by Kelly. It was embarrassing
-
A dominat ruck also helps crawski but let’s not have facts get in the way
LOL the disingenious ways tiger supporters find to defend ordinary players and games.
So Lets talk about the ruckmen. Two supposed front line rucks get towelled up by an ancient 30 something year old who has not played for months and has no afl match fitness.
Just like anything else where we havent done too well in games this is overlooked. as well.
Our rucks arent dominant yet we have done enough to not get belted with all sorts of different midfield combinations in the past.
Ross Graham mate they have been around long enough to know how to play to a losing ruck.We should also have structures in place we play to in these situations yet as soon as we lose a prestia or Cotchin we get beaten up. There can only be two things for this and maybe it is both.
My concern we look a million bucks when its on our terms but sheesh we are not even poor but putrid when its not, and it doesnt take a lot of injuries to hurt.
-
So glad we choose this guy over RCD MRJ banks or anyone. He produces so much more than he, MRJ or any of the vfl listed players ever will.
-
I think he is improving but still average. RCD needs a go
-

Sarcasm or being serious Frankie?
I hope the former
-
I thought he was ordinary.
That defensive effort I think in the last quarter was pee weak
-
Don't see with him one not bad game and then unsighted again.
-
Has a three week hiatus and is picked over a bloke who carves it up.
The norm happens regardless after a decent game 3 or 4 weeks ago he backs it up with mediocrity.
Reckon this week a bit of blame goes to Ross and the dumb arse selectors who picked him. Never ever done enough to warrant such a selection coming off injury.

Had a pretty good game
Easy when you're fisting a pack of amoral drug cheats but yes he did. Didn't lay a tackle though.
Despite that I think he's a better option that Graham at the moment, who has had a poor 4-6 weeks himself.

I tend to agree although Graham has come up big in finals past. Like I said in the game thread I’d consider dropping Gibcus and playing 1 def less and 1 mid more if we play the pies. If it’s the lions I think Gibcus has to stay if for nothing else for him being tall.
-
Best game Ross has played since his debut game. I know it was only against Essendon but it was the best I've seen his vision, decision making and use of the ball in an AFL game. I don't recall one obvious error with his 21 possies. His disposal efficiency reflects that at 95%.
-
Ross has improved this year.
He still has a way to go and he’s still no more than a backup/depth player, but I think he’s shown enough to keep around for another year.

Thought he was good
Biggest mistake he made on the night was allowing Parish to get a very soft goal at a stoppage in the 2nd, no defensive pressure, no game awareness. Was awful to watch
However, I will again cool my jets on saying it was a breakout game for him because we've seen it before. Plays a very good even great game and then goes missing. He needs to start backing these types of game up.
-
Ross' stats last night:
21 disposals (10k, 11h, 3c, 18u, 95.2% eff.)
7 marks
0 tackles
1 clearance
5 inside 50s
1 intercept
322 metres gained
14 score involvements (equal most)
2 goal assists
1 goal
80% time on ground
-
Good game, lets just see how he goes against anything but witches hats, which is what that rabble was last night.
Elimination final will see where he is at, and i wont hold my breath il see any defensive pressure from him.
-
I like Ross and have enjoyed his development this year. Becoming cleaner when distributing the ball is still a work in progress, but he is progressing nicely :clapping
-
He played the best game Ive seen him ever play. Clean and accurate with the ball all night and his decision making was elite. Hopefully he plays like this when under duress and real pressure.
If he continues down this track Id be a huge fan of his and retract all I’ve said about him to this point.
-
It was the fourth time this season in 14 games that the 21-year-old has had 20 disposals or more, underlining his improvement at the game’s highest level.
“I was rapt to be back in and play some more football . . . and really happy to get the win,” Ross said.
Ross’ capacity to create opportunities for teammates, over the course of the four quarters, was a particularly impressive feature of his display against the Bombers.
“I knew I had a few (potential shots for goal) from the pocket that I wasn’t going to be able to kick, so if I can help bring our vision to the game, that’s something I pride myself on, for sure,” he said.
“And it was good to see them (teammates) finish off the work.”

Richmond’s Jack Ross hopes his finals turn has come as Dustin Martin and potentially Jack Graham prepare to return
It’s tight for posts at Tigerland, as Jack Ross knows all too well, but the young midfielder is daring to dream he will be play in the elimination final against Brisbane.
Marc McGowan
HeraldSun
August 22, 2022 - 11:33AM
Fringe Tiger Jack Ross is dreaming of playing in his first final next week after a strong weekend performance, albeit with the spectre of Dustin Martin and potentially Jack Graham preparing to return.
Graham’s toe injury opened the door for Ross to return for Saturday night’s 11-goal thrashing of Essendon and he responded with 21 disposals and a career-most 14 score involvements in a sparkling audition.
Ross has played 43 games during one of Richmond’s greatest eras and was on the verge of being Graham’s injury replacement for the 2019 grand final, only for Marlion Pickett to force his way in with a brilliant VFL grand final display.
Pickett famously leapfrogged Ross and Kamdyn McIntosh, who were held out of the VFL decider and placed on standby, to make his AFL debut on the biggest stage.
Ross turns 22 on September 3 – two days after the Tigers face the Lions in an elimination final at the Gabba – and is amid his best season yet but will endure a nervous wait.
Graham’s ability to shake a turf toe-type problem could be the key to his September appearance.
“It was nice to play a good game in the last round of the year, heading into finals. I knew I had to,” Ross told News Corp.
“Positionally, I wasn’t needed last week, with Jack Graham playing on-ball and ‘Shedda’ (Shane Edwards) coming in to play up forward – so to come back in and play my role and get the win was the most important thing.
“But it’s tough. I’ve been in and out, but I feel like I learn a lot from it every week and last week was no different.
“You kind of dwell on it for 24 hours or whatever but I know that if I keep dwelling on it, it’s no good for the guys around me. I just need to move on, which I’m proud of myself for this week.”
Kane Lambert has already retired and Edwards will join him at season’s end, but Ross still has a number of Richmond greats to compete with, as well as emerging young guns such as Tyler Sonsie.
“There are still so many Richmond legends, like Trent (Cotchin), who are playing and it’s pretty surreal still,” he said.
“We’ve got all the premiership photos in our meeting room and every morning you look at it and it’s pretty special and you definitely don’t take it for granted.
“Now, we’ve found ourselves in a spot where we could do it again, and I feel like if anyone can do it, it’s us.”

The same problem still for me.
The role at 187cm 87kg slow with lets just say average disposal he should be playing an inside role.
There are plenty of others you would prefer playing outside and that is exactly how to describe Ross and the vast majority of his games for us outside.
First year player Sonsie who according to people here is not fit lacks a tank and imo as a first year players suffers from size and strength atm in just 6 games has given more and actually uses the ball far better when under pressure.
Here we have a big bodied mid and for the year he is going at just 1.3 tackles a game, 1.5 clearances, just 4.6 contested possesions, and just 16.2 disposals a game.
He has done nothing to help us in the areas we have struggled in.
For me the same problem is very much there still too much reliance on too few in the midfield to win ball for us. When they are stopped or have quite games we don't have players like Ross stepping up.
-
I'd drop him for a slightly under done Dusty in a heartbeat, or for a fit Graham.

Thought he did play a good game. He did one awful handpass which sold his teammate into trouble but was overall clean in his possession. Agree was not a break out game. Still undecided as to whether he will make it.
-
He’s played great the last couple if games - making good decisions with ball in hand.
Problem is that Sonsie is already at his level in his first season.

TIGER CUB PRIMED FOR EXTENSION
RICHMOND is set to reward youngster Jack Ross with a fresh two-year deal.
It's understood Ross is headed towards an extension with the Tigers after a strong finish to the season, which culminated in a decisive performance against Essendon on Saturday night.
Ross had 21 disposals and 14 score involvements, along with one goal and two goal assists, to put the 21-year-old right in the frame to retain his place ahead of next Thursday's elimination final against Brisbane.
The big-bodied midfielder, who was recruited to the club with pick No.43 four years ago, was coming towards the end of his contract with Richmond but a deal to secure his future until at least 2024 is now considered imminent.
The Tigers still have decisions to make on the futures of veteran pair Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt, while former top-20 pick Riley Collier-Dawkins is also uncontracted at season's end.

-
Ross, who received five coaches votes for his 21 disposals, 14 score involvements game on the weekend, will enter a fifth and sixth season at Punt Road as part of the contract extension.
The big-bodied midfielder has displayed a consistent ball-winning ability across 43 senior matches for the Club, both as an inside midfielder and on the wing.
Ross has featured in the senior team on 14 occasions in 2022, averaging career highs in disposals (17.4), marks (4.3), and inside 50s (3.1).
“Jack has shown across four years at the Club that he has the skillset and work rate to succeed at AFL level,” Hartley said.
“It has been great to see Jack contributing to a high standard this season and this contract is a reward for his efforts on and off the field.”

Surprised his still 21 so plenty of improvement left .
-
I like the way he's taken Sonsie under his wing. Shows leadership at a young age. Glad we re signed him.
-
He looked more and more like he belongs at the required level. Continue this rate of improvement and he’s going to make it.
-
I think a bit of his slow development I'ds that injury copped and us chopping and changing him in positions.

Covid and no VFL comp didnt help either
I like the kid- happy for him and hope he grasps it

So they bring up stats that look good but refuse to print any stats in the areas they are talking about.
Ball winner my arse.
Again i say the role we have him in is wrong we play him outside and the stats back it up to the hilt. And why do we play him on a wing and in outside roles he is slow has average disposal and makes poor decisions too much.
He lays just 1.3 tackles a game.just 1.5 clearances,a paltry 4.6 contested possessions and goes at a poor 16.2 disposals a game for a mid of any description id say that is poor. Just irks me when they come up with such obvious spiel do they think supporters cannot see.
There is a kid there who actually has better contested ball Clearance and tackle numbers is also a bigger body but cannot get a game clearly his face does not fit in the purple circle.
-
So you expect the club in the article they post to announce his contract extension to include his lesser impressive stats and not add mayo?
-
Let’s see how he goes in an elimination final as opposed to playing against witches hats. I certainly won’t be holding my breath.
-
So you expect the club in the article they post to announce his contract extension to include his lesser impressive stats and not add mayo?
I dont mind them bringing up any stat in areas he has been good at!!! but to bald face lie about his ability and paint what stats they do bring up as something special sheesh.
They are saying, We are happy with the big bodied midfielder and his consistent ball winning ability across 43 games. Then you would think they would want to talk about the stats that are relevant to the comments.
To then bring nothing up to back up what they say is mindboggling. You me most supporters know why they don't bring up his stats because they are not too great. Better to make crap up and lie about things eh.
That story is everything that is wrong with the media the afl and the clubs today.
Instead of spiel and lies How about they just say something like, we are offering Jack Ross a two year extension. We know he still has areas to improve in but we are happy with his progress to date.
No spiel no fluff no making stuff up. Probably something very close to the truth.
-
“Jack Ross stuffing lucky and should thank his lucky stars for contract extension” trumps Tigers as they sign him for another 2 years?
-
Thoughts on Ross' first final?
23 disposals (11k, 12h, 9c, 14u, 91.3% eff.)
8 marks
1 tackle
2 clearances (1 centre clearance)
3 inside 50s
4 intercepts
296 metres gained
8 score involvements
3 goal assists
1 goal
78% time on ground
-
He was good, probably even deserves a vote for it.
Keep improving mate. Another big off season put some size on and play inside IMO

Was ok. Thought his decision marking has improved a lot.
Needs to work on his tackling and pressure and not fumbling and being cleaner with ball in hand in the contest.
-
Great 1st qtr
Then went MIA or at least dropped away in qtrs 2 and 3. Was better in the last
He is still very much a heart in mouth player, who knows what your going to get
But has to get more consistent

5. Jack Ross
What a time to play the game of your life. Started on a wing next to Mitch Robinson but also pushed into the centre, especially after Dion Prestia was subbed out. Produced a big team-lifting goal in the second term during a breathtaking Richmond run. Won lots of hard footy, but was also clean by foot, finishing with 23 disposals, nine contested possessions, eight marks and eight score involvements.

After signing a contract extension in August, Ross now wants to buy a new home in Richmond. Seems he's committed to becoming a long-term Tiger.

Look i know hes still pretty young!!! of course he is committed to becoming a long term tiger. A simple question would be what club would go out of their way to get him. The honest answer is few if any.
I suppose its off season and fluff pieces abound everywhere. Truth is with Taranto and Hopper he is unlikely to get many games.
Truth is i hope he proves me wrong and becomes at the least a consistent big bodied ball winning mid in the long term.
I just wonder especially in Victoria do people ever get fed up reading the utter crap the media dish out on a regular basis.
-
I reckon he made a shift forward in 2022. Hopefully there’s another level or two to go…

Very solid player & still improving. Wonder where he can get to?

He’s going to have to work very hard, and then get lucky at the selection table.

It's interesting I was watching a couple of H&A games from the 2020 season the other day.
Granted I don't rate him that much but I can honestly say the 2020 version wasn't much different to the version we saw in the majority of his games in 2022. I reckon that's his biggest issue ...slow improvement, if any improvement at all

Maybe stat's back it up not sure , but I thought he was much better in 2022 stayed involved in games and contributed .Alot of it to do with being put in his correct position.

Might excel in a support as an in and under back up position, but will only get an opportunity due to injury

I don’t know about being a long way down the pecking order. I don’t have him best 22 but of those outside of that it’s really graham (who I have as 23rd man) and then Ross. Given cotch will likely be rested frequently and the injury proness Prestia has shown in the past (knockwood that changes this year), I can still see Ross getting plenty of games.

Ross and Graham will both get plenty of games
As an inside mid he’s still below many
Prestia
Cotchin
Taranto
Hopper
Dusty in spurts
I’m sure there is more I’m not thinking of off the top of my head

Yup and add:
Bolton in spurts
Sonsie &
Baker/Short (one of them will be part of the midfield rotation)
Thing is they are all best 22 (maybe sonsie in his second year will go through downturns in form here and there) so it only takes 1-2 injuries/suspensions/restings for Ross to enter the fray.

Yep spot on imo. His 7 games in his first season were probably better than last year if anything. It was those early games that had supporters optimistic about his future. I know this will sound like im just bringing up stats but they do back up what is being said.
The biggest proviso i would put in here is he only turned 22 in September and like others i don't see the point in playing him out of position a lot of the time.
The other thing is even with Taranto and Hopper we don't have a lot of big medium sized mids. If one of them or Cotchin went down then he probably should be the one looked at.
We did lose some big so called mids at the end of the season Caddy RC-D and Martyn while they did not play much afl footy they were literally the only big mids we had in reserve.I suppose we bought in two who will play every game if fit and lost three who were not up to it players Ross was getting games in front of now he went down the pecking order another two spots.
-
Just on his stats
His first 7 games in 2019 were good with ave 17 disposals
2020 was down but that was the COVID reduced season so can expect that
2021 was when they were training him on the wing. 15 recorded games but 4 were as sub that he didn't get on the ground. He had 3 other games as sub when he got on late. Recorded two 20+ disposal games late in the season so progression was there.
2022 he recorded 15 games but 1 was as non playing sub and another he got on mid game against West Coast. 2022 was his best year with stats. Recorded 8 games with 19+ disposals.
Has played 44 games so this year and next is his time to take the step forward. Worse case he is a serviceable fill in.
-
Have to remember that his last few games were against good opposition and he was really good. Definitely the best I'd ever seen him play, stats or no stats.
-

Was very good vs Cats when Prestia went off and I thought in our best half dozen in the final. I was a doubter until season 2022 but feel like he offers great depth to that midfield - particularly if there’s an injury and can replace Cotchin in 2023
-
He showed something in the back end of last year--including the final--that he hasn't shown before.
If you didn't see it then I'm sorry for you. But he's not he same player he was 3 years ago.
-
Improved a lot when he was played in the midfield
-
Read a good debate about him on another site and it made me stop and think.
Most of us keep pushing the line that he is an AFL inside mid. I keep pushing that barrow but maybe i have it wrong.
The question being asked, is he an AFL INSIDE MID The correct answer would be no, not yet anyway.
The vast majority of his career possesions are uncontested.
The thinking was he might become one but he is definately not an inside mid at this point and i agree.
We have played him majority of games H/B - WING - FWD. So right now he is not and hasn't been an afl inside mid.
Let me explain my thinking here.
For me your inside mids win plenty of contested ball and get heaps of possesions .when they dont get it they tackle and pressure their opponent.the good ones also manage their fair share of clearances they can't always win first ball.
Atm Jack goes at 14.16 disposals a game. cp 4.57 up 9.95.
He has had 20 or more disposal,s to me that would be a pass mark 10 times. That says he can at times get a bit of ball but it is not often.
He has had 7 or more contested possesions, again for an inside mid a pass mark imo, 11 times averaging just 4.57 a game.
He has had more than four clearances just twice and averages just 1.61 a game.
He has had 5 or more tackles a game 9 times and averages just 1.91 a game.
I think the stats back up the notion that right now he is not and has not been an AFL inside mid, Not yet anyway.
The question has to be asked with Hopper and Taranto will he be given the opportunity to regularly play the role?
-
Question- do you rate Tom Atkins from the Cats? If so, why? If not, why not?

Good post, given the way we have recruited i'd say no & he'll play the same roles he has been for a while now.

What did we all think of Ross' return game?
23 disposals (11k, 12h, 4c, 19u, 78.3% eff.)
8 marks
2 tackles
3 clearances (1 centre clearance)
1 intercept
322 metres gained
2 score involvements
1 goal
1 free for
66% time on ground
-
Decent in the first and last, quiet in between. Not overly impactful but great goal late. Certainly not the worst
-
Slow between the ears and disposal is brutal
-
He was bought in to play the Hopper role and it didn't work
I am generally surprised he had 23 disposals as I barely noticed him apart from the goal and the short dinky kicks
-
He's quite a nice shot for goal tbh.
I've ruled him out for ever being a decent mid, wing or anything.
Could he be of any use up forward?
-
That shot in goal was a ripper. I didn’t think he have a chance to make the distance. But he played on, made the angle tighter and flushed it. Problem is, he is slow, struggles to put his head over it and I’m not sure you can get more than a cigarette packed under his feet when he leaps for a mark.
-
Thought he was better than usual , albeit it’s a low bar
-

If it was the Hopper role then he failed dismally. 4 C/P and 2 tackles sheesh!!!!. 3 clearances okay i suppose.
I was going to ask why we played him outside again now i don't have to.
Fair dinkum everyone into Cotchin but they are into the wrong bloke.

If Ross can't get a game in our depleted line-up then surely he'll be looking elsewhere to get some gametime and won't be a Punt Rd in 2024.

Great point MT although you might argue his role isn't where we have injuries…

Hardwick said fringe midfielder Jack Ross would get a chance at centre bounces in Prestia’s absence after struggling to settle into the side at half-forward or on the wing.

Dimma added that he sees Ross as a long-term part of the footy club. So we've got to give him opportunities to show his wares in the positions we think he can play - sometimes on the wing and sometimes through the midfield. It will be combination of both. Dimma said he's a quality player and he's looking forward to giving Ross the opportunity as he believes we're a better side for having Ross in it.

Poor Jack Ross, last time he talked up a young player like that = "long term part of the Club" the kid never played seniors again and got delisted season end :rollin

Hope he puts in a great game this week.

Hes gone

Not big enough to admit that by playing him out of position ie fwd wing he has hurt his development.
Gotta ask though as a long term part of the footy club what outstanding footy attribute does he have Dimma that has you suggesting that.

Surprised at no tackles. I distinctly remember him being involved in a few over the day.
-
I actually want to mention Ross
I was peeved in the 1st when he refused to attack a marking contest. Stood there rather than taking the contact
But....
After that he was very good. So credit to him. Still don't reckon he should be played in the wing, he ain't no wingman. Might explain the supposed zero tackles
I'm with Jobba, I remember him being involved in a few contests that involved tackling. One happened right down in front of us (Ponsford end)
-
I thought he was good. Strong in the hips and great at keeping his arms free

Playing on the wing one wouldn't expect too many clearances. He was good and if he produces this level every week, i would be happy with this return.
-
He absolutely had a tackle. I remember thinking at the time it was a good tackle and it's one of his strengths.
-
Just a battler or at best decent foot soldier and im pretty sure he will never be any thing more.
Have to ask again what outstanding attribute does he have that has people talking him up so much. Anyone have an answer.
He is definately not the type you are going to build a side around. The type you would give up as the steak knives in a trade for a good player.

THE PLAYER AT EACH AFL CLUB WHO NEEDS A CHANGE OF SCENERY FOR GREATER OPPORTUNITIES

Jack Ross
Jack Ross is one player at Richmond who could do with a change of scenery.
The 22-year-old has played 48 games across five seasons and is more often than not on the outside looking in.
That has only become more apparent since the arrival of Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper, and even with Trent Cotchin’s move forward opening a midfield slot, there have been few opportunities forthcoming.
Ross was drafted in 2018 and started his career in promising fashion in 2019 when he was played as a midfielder.
Over the last few years, however, he has often been used as a bit-part player who fills gaps when key Tigers on-ballers are out of the side. Even when that is the case, he is often deployed on flanks or the wing.
Ross is contracted with the Tigers until 2024, but could look elsewhere if he wants to become a permanent midfielder before he enters his prime.

I've been very critical of this bloke
But I have to say last night it is the best game I've seen him play
Thought he was our best. Still want to see him in the guts but credit where it is due was bloody good last night
-
Keep.
-
Yep eaten my words. Was excellent. He's actually had a very very very good run of 10-15 games if you include last year.
-
Jack Ross is crap.
You people obviously can’t recall any other games this year. Last week he was poor if I recall.
VFL player at best rort poor decision making skills. Scott was probably happy he was getting the ball as he knew he would sfa with it.
Dud.

Thought he was pretty good all game.
Would have preferred to see him tried in the guts but the coaching staff thought it a great idea to use Short in there and Ross on the wing. :help
Why wouldn’t they swap them?
Mindboggling :pullhair

The Undroppable: Jack Ross
He’s been back in the team for four weeks, but it’s time for Jack Ross to get an extended run.
The 22-year-old was one of Richmond’s best with 26 disposals, 10 marks, six inside 50s and two goal assists from the wing.
Ross has been in and out of the team constantly over the last few seasons, however, he must be given opportunities for the remainder of the campaign to show what he is capable of.

Composure is a good word for him.
Always been great at keeping him arms free.
Thought he was gonna kick that goal too that's how confident I am in him in front of goal. Shame it fell short was on line.
-
Do people really want to see him playing outside roles.
His skills are nothing flash yet he is one of the bigger mids we have and he had just 4 contested disposals.
Nothing changes he gets a bit of ball in a role he really should not be playing and all is forgiven againThen the 4 poo games will happen where his skills are badly exposed and then rinse and repeat.
Fmd soft as butter Short Short playing inside and big bodied lack of skills Ross outside. It has been a shemozzle for god knows how long.
And again i say apart from being able to roost the ball a good distance Shorts disposal is not that great either.
The lack of polish in the team has always been there yet with all the rule changes and the obvious need for more class in the outside roles we continue to pick well ordinary players who just don't cut the mustard with the way the game has changed.
If nothing else the last three seasons has shown just how deluded we have become. We have stopped evolving and stopped acknowledging what needs to change simply because we find it too hard to make some tough calls on players and not just the oldies.

Regardless what role he played he was good on Saturday, he made good decisions, got a lot of it, ran well and had a huge crack. That in itself is a huge plus for Jack cause stringing all of those things together has been rare at times.

When he missed GF 2017 for Marlion and VFA GF also for Pickett showed great selflessness. Should stick with him 100%
Who was that wp??
Another bloke did the same :shh

Thought Jack is looking composed and ball usage for the most was very good.

Best game since before The Navi from Freo fell on his foot. Can't wait until he moves back on ball after Prestia packs it in. :shh

Another really good game
Great to see the consistency

That's what happens when you leave him in the side not chopping and changing.

Jack Ross has taken an impressive step in his football development at Richmond this season.
The 22-year-old, taken by the Tigers with their second pick (No. 43 overall) in the 2018 national draft, is playing the best football of his AFL career in his wing role.
He is averaging a career-high 17.6 disposals, career-high 5.2 marks, career-high 2.0 rebound-50s and career-high 310.0 metres gained per match.

Still nothing more than a plodder.

Has been better and more consistent

Never been a fan
But I thought he did some really good things the other night

I reckon he’s been good this year.

I reckon he’s been good this year.

-
Definitely improving.

Excellent performance, think you’d mark that down as his best for the club. Well done Rossy :cheers
-
He’s been massive! I didn’t rate him for ages and I’ve been super skeptical al season but after some consistent performances I think he Easily cements himself as a starting 22 player with tonight’s performance
-
Thought he was great tonight
Not sure why he was dropped TBH
-
Should never have been dropped.
Been solid this year.

See above

Well done Jack, kept us in the game
-
His best game for us tonight. Well done
-
Was great. Goals were kicked at desperate stages
-
The 22-year-old wingman/midfielder Jack Ross ended up being one of the Tigers’ best players in their fighting 13-point win.
He finished with 20 disposals, six marks, three inside-50s, three rebound-50s, five intercepts, two goals (2.2), eight score involvements and 518 metres gained.
Interim Richmond coach Andrew McQualter paid tribute to Ross in his post-match press conference.
“Really pleased for ‘Rossy’,” McQualter said.
“He was pretty stiff to go out of the team and become sub tonight. But I thought it was just a great bounce-back from him.
“The areas we asked him to work on in his game we saw tonight, and it was great to see him get some reward for his effort that he puts in.”

Jack Ross needs to stay in the starting 22
After years of moving in and out of the senior side, Jack Ross had strung together 10 consecutive matches this year for the first first time in his career. But with a host of returning players named to face Sydney on Thursday night, including Dion Prestia and Dustin Martin, Ross was once again forced out of the 22 and into the sub role. Injected into the game in the first quarter after an untimely injury to debutant Jacob Bauer, Ross overcame the late start to have 10 touches and two of the Tigers' five goals to half-time while playing on the wing and was one of his side's best in the tight win. With the Tigers heading towards a transitionary period, they need to be playing 22-year-old as often as possible from the opening bounce. – Sarah Black

The Undroppable: Jack Ross
Andrew Slevison
SEN
10 July 2023
After being dropped to the sub role, Jack Ross grasped his opportunity with both hands.
Unfortunately, debutant Jacob Bauer suffered a hamstring in the opening few minutes which forced him out of the game.
Ross jumped out of his skin in a sliding doors moment to replace Bauer and did a fine job.
He finished with 20 disposals, eight score involvements, three rebound 50s and three inside 50s, while also kicking 2.2 from the wing.
Ross appears to be treated more harshly than others at Richmond when it comes to selection, but he simply cannot be dropped after this latest performance.

What is Jacks best position??
-
Utility
-
Always backed him in but as a pure inside mid and thought the main reason he hadn't kicked on was due to him being played in the wrong position -along with the slimming down- so it's to his credit that he's starting to thrive in his current role and shows that he's even better than I thought as he's demonstrated a versatility I previously thought was beyond his skill set. Having said all that - still think he needs to be on ball more though and hopefully he will be eventually. :shh
-
Great game from Jack today, he is taking leaps and bounds. Composure and delivery very good 👍🏿 and well done
-
Yep, didn't think he had it in him a year ago to be all that effective on the outside but since late last year he's been very handy for the most part. Good to see
-
Bloody good.
Great strength through the hips, clean hands, good marking etc.
Undroppable at this stage.
-
This kid has been in and out of the team for several years now , never really settled until now it seems.
He almost seems like a calm head out there, doesn’t seem rushed and appears to have time .. a rare ability
-
Since Dimma left flourishing not chopping and changing him all over the place.
-
Still quite extraordinary that he's only back in the side because he tore it up after coming on early as a sub for Bauer after being dropped from the starting 22 basically because he's the wrong Jack .... :shh
-
He’s a keeper and a good reason why you don’t bin a player 2 or 3 seasons in.
-
Composure very good. Well done to him.

Run of games makes Ross the boss of his own destiny
By Sarah Black
afl.com.au
24 July 2023
FOR THE first time in his career, Jack Ross has found consistency.
Consistency in his position on the field, in his spot in the best 22, and in his performance within games.
The 22-year-old Richmond midfielder managed seven consecutive games last year, and seven again in 2021, but the one-point win over Hawthorn on Saturday was his 12th straight game.
"It's been nice. I always had a feeling that if I could play consistent games, then I would start developing at a more rapid pace," Ross told afl.com.au.
"I probably plateaued there for a little bit, being in and out, but to come in now – I'm in my fifth year, I feel like I need to do something and take a step.
"I feel like I've embraced my position in the change to the wing. I've got awesome players to work off like Kamdyn (McIntosh) and Marlion (Pickett), young guys like 'Banksy' (Sam Banks) who play wing as well. Hopefully I can just keep building, it's been nice to play."
Ross captained Vic Metro at under-16 level, but wasn't selected for the under-18s state team, eventually picked up by Richmond with pick No.43 in 2018.
Having been a bit-part player for the Tigers prior to this year, filling in spots at half-forward and in the centre, he's found his home on the wing, where his steady head and neat sidestep have come to the fore, averaging 18.4 disposals and 5.6 marks.
Ross said being pushed out to substitute against Sydney – after a 21-disposal effort the week prior in the heavy loss to Brisbane – proved he played best when he has a point to make, kicking two goals to half-time after an early Jacob Bauer injury.
"I always play with a little bit of a chip on my shoulder, and I feel like I generally respond to being dropped or put out in a good manner. I just trust the coaches in what they want me to work on," Ross said.
"I try and train as hard as I can during the week to rectify and put my hand up.
"To get on as early as I did the other week, it was a blessing for me and a bit of a curse for Bauer to go down with a hamstring. But that was definitely a game I didn't want to let slip, and to capitalise as best as I could, I felt like I did that."
Richmond came from six goals down just before three-quarter time on Saturday to defeat Hawthorn by a solitary point.
The Dreamtime at the 'G loss to Essendon earlier this year – Damien Hardwick's final match in charge – marked the ninth-straight Tiger loss in games decided by less than a goal, with an additional three draws thrown in for good measure.
"We knew that come tight situations, it's crunch time. I think we needed to put a bit more time and effort during the week into preparing those situations. You're not guaranteed to go into them during games, but when you do, it's important to know you can do it in a calm manner," Ross said.
"I think in the past we might have been a bit hectic and a lot of messages and mixed signals. But we're very calm now, our coaches are awesome with directing those messages straight to us and everyone's around it now.
"It definitely helps when you have the Tiger army behind you and the stadium starts erupting. To handle the pressure the way we did is really, really pleasing. To come into crunch time at the end of the season, this is a massive step for us."

Wrong Jack
-
Champion Data’s Daniel Hoyne joined SEN’s Sportsday to discuss the performances from Round 19 which may have been overlooked in the coaches’ votes.
Jack Ross (Richmond)
“We had him as the second highest rated player on the ground on the weekend against Hawthorn and didn’t get a vote from the coaches.
“Over the last couple of weeks, he’s actually been the sixth highest rated wingman in the competition.
“It was a huge substitution when he came on (against Sydney) so early in the game and have a real impact.
“He’s found his role playing that wing role alongside Kamdyn McIntosh, under Andrew McQualter.
“He’s going quite well at the moment and should be one for Richmond supporters to keep an eye on moving forward."

Having a great year.
Well done young man.
-
Becoming one of my favourite players to watch. Has become cool and composed, hits good targets. What a stunning turnaround
-
Today was back to normal for him. Bo impact what so ever. Couple of nice things and that's it.
-
Was pathetic but like Balta has runs unlike some like Mansell
-
Lmao - least of our worries, had a poor one but played like Pendlebury compared to Slowham...don't see the flogs bumping that plodder's thread... :shh
-
He was invisible in the 2nd half

Clodhopper.
-
Fourth most possies for us and his equal third highest possession game of the season.
Thoughts on Ross' game?
23 disposals (11k, 12h, 10c, 11u, 78.3% eff.)
4 marks
1 tackle
4 clearances (1 centre clearance)
5 inside 50s
426 metres gained
5 intercepts
9 score involvements
1 goal assist
79% time on ground
-
I reckon he is in our best 22 now, probably as high as 14
-
I think in the second quarter he handballed to a Roo while being tackled. Was a bit of a stuff up.
Funny moment he was on the bench and walking along the fence having a drink.
One of our fans shouted WE STILL LOVE YOU JACK
And he said 'thanks mate'
Got a nice giggle haha

Fair enough.
I suggest you look at his composure and passing.
He has been improving with more games IMHO.
-
Ross has the typical speed that most inside mids have -IE mid paced - but he's playing an outside role that's usually the domain of quicker players and looks slower than he is - he's still a positive hare compared to Machine Man....my main issue with him atm is he does that annoying thing that Hackson used to do in that he too often doesn't play the percentages and will blindly release the ball invariably right into the path of oppo players instead of just killing it, taking it over the boundary or taking the tackle.... :shh

I think it's wrong to bag players at the game. It's a vile and toxic thing to do when a bloke is giving it a go.
They should only be encouraged and supported.
He's playing well given his limitations and it's not his fault the list isn't deep enough to drop him.

i respectfully dont agree with the exception of the abuse levelled at carlton players a few months and dogs today. If i knew how to post the video from today i would, but it was pretty bad.
Im not one to bag our players at the game, but i certainly bag the umpires especially if i am close to them. stuff them.
some will say whats the difference?
Also if i got paid half a mil i would accept criticism. If not and its all too hard then perhaps go find another job.

Ross has been one of few highlights this season. His work rate and willingness to get the best out of himself deserves acknowledgment. Solid AFL player these days :shh

Difference is the fans are there to support the players and enjoy the game.
If a bloke's giving it a go why bag then?
The players love our fan base and thankfully we're nothing like the neanderthals you mentioned
-
Greatly improved, been in the top 5 possession winners for weeks, like every player can alway improve parts of their games .
He should be proud of himself for his improvements
-
Not going to criticise him he has improved his game. The question is from what low to what high.
Still believe he is nothing more than lets say an average player and one we should be looking to upgrade upon down the track.

Going to say people need to ask themselves why do we continue to play him on a wing. Okay he has been servicable their but it is ludicrous we just stop looking for better player for the role.

23 yr old Midfielder #JackRoss has now played 63 games incl. 19 last season.
After a slow burn he finally started to establish himself in the snr side. He's developing ok but IMO he needs to keep improving to remain in our best team.
What are your 2024 expectations for Jack?

A lot on here think he is a plodder.
He has shown a lot of character hanging in at Richmond after Marlion got 2 medal in 2017.
I think he shows composure under pressure and has a good head for the game which makes up for his lack of speed.
He is probably not played in his preferred mid position so it is a bit tricky.
He seems best suited in a sort of roaming mid/back flanker/wing but is not suited to hold any of those positions in his own right.
He doesn’t shirk the challenge. He is fit and dedicated.
Will be interesting to see how he goes under Yze
I think his best result this year would see him as a clever deliverer of the ball concentrating on developing his offence.
15 games this year would be a win for him but he could develop into our best 22.

OK I have to ask - who's Sir Runsalot?
-
He’s best 22 for sure.
-
Came on and at least got some ball. Still not the answer though imo. he does little to help us with contested ball or clearances and does not tackle.
I just think for the way he plays we need to try and find quicker and better ball users than him.

his ball use has been very decent the last year or 2. Generally pretty reliable. He should be the bloke getting regular games on the wing these days until kids are showing a lot in the VFL. McIntosh and pickett both need to go

Prefer him over Sir Runsalot but still think he belongs on ball....he can't be any worse then the four mannequins that started there yesterday.... :shh

Time for Ross to play some footy
After a summer of hype, Thomson Dow was completely overawed.
There has been plenty of talk that he is the man ready to step into the Trent Cotchin void but he was simply nowhere near it on Saturday.
Dow finished with just six disposals (one kick) from 72 per cent game time.
In comparison, Jack Ross came on in the third quarter and picked up 10 touches from 38 per cent game time.
He went at 80 per cent efficiency, had three inside 50s and simply must start more often.
Source: SEN (https://www.sen.com.au/news/2024/03/11/what-they-got-right-and-wrong-each-clubs-wins-and-woes-from-opening-round/).

Might not be the answer individually but he damn sure has more runs on the board than Dow and I'm F'd if I know why they play Dow ahead of him and in the guts then move Ross around like a chess piece.

Rewatched the 3rd Q.
I have been a huge critic of Ross at times, but in this team, he has to be playing every single week.
Actually came on and looked more composed than every one of our midfielders.
-
(https://i.imgflip.com/8ix1qw.jpg)
:shh
-
Not looking for a fight here but i have to ask exactly when at the top level has he ever shown or for that matter even played onball.
To play onball id say you have to be a good clearance player and a decent ball winner.Top that off if inside the good ones lay lots of tackles.
The outside ones generally hurt by foot.
He ticks none of these boxes as an onballer. He is bog average in just about everything. There in lies the problem.
-
Um let's see apart from all VFL games that he's played there and often been in our bests... every game he played in his first year before he was injured that up until his half a game four days ago were arguably the best he's played.... :shh
-

:bow Well he couldn’t do worse than Dow? Not saying Dow should be canned after one game and a good body of work pre season but for perseverance Ross should be given a good go, he deserves it before Dow IMHO
-
Easily best 22 if he not playing well coaching group need a reality check.
-
Read a good debate about him on another site and it made me stop and think.
Rather than doing it again this is Jack Ross.
To date he is not a mid he has hardly been played there. and theres a reason for that.
The question that remains is, Are his skills on the outside good enough for a wing hf, hb role ? or do we have others with much better attributes for those roles?.
-
His skills have been pretty sound I reckon. Nothing special but hits the kicks he should, has good composure, makes decent decisions and is relatively clean. He's a very solid option to run through the wing.
I used to have the same opinion of him as you, Claw. Didn't think he was an inside mids ass and never saw anything from he to indicate he would be a good inside mid at AFL level. However, I've seen him operate reasonably well on the outside and to me, he's a much better option on a wing than Mcintosh/Pickett. He can hold the role for a while and hopefully grow and if he doesn't continue to develop then he's a handy role player and hopefully a younger player takes that role for themselves. If the club actually backed Jack in instead of handing spots to blokes with brownie points from 7 years ago then I think his confidence would grow too
-
He's a decent kick for goal
-
Thought he was good played a decent game.
-
Was pleasing to see him start in middle a few times.
-
Solid again.
-
Ross was used as an inside midfielder because of the absence of Jacob Hopper due to injury, and he excelled, finishing the match with an equal team-high 26 disposals, nine contested possessions, six marks, five inside-50s, four rebound-50s, five clearances, an equal team-high 12 score involvements, three intercepts and 307 metres gained.
Richmond coach Adem Yze was impressed with Ross’ performance as a midfielder and believes he can thrive in the role long term.
“Rossy’s been thrown around. He’s played forward, he’s played wing, and then Jacob Hopper going out, it gives him opportunity to go and play inside mid,” Yze said in his post-game press conference.
“There were patches in the game where he was really strong in that area, there were patches in the game where he feels like he could improve. But the synergy around just getting some continuity in that position is going to be really important.
“He’ll get an opportunity again next week to do the same thing.
“Hopefully he just gets better and better.”

Solid again.
Agree. was solid and has been mostly this year. I just think solid is his ceiling.
yes a few will feel vindicated in the fact we have not over the years played him and persevered with him as a mid.
Credit to him in the fact he works hard to better himself.

I think he will surprise a few this year, just have a gut feeling he may just go up a level or 2

I think he will surprise a few this year, just have a gut feeling he may just go up a level or 2
And then he will seek a trade.
Likely lol
-
Loved his game today, does a lot of very good work when played in mid field.
Kmac 2 May drive him out but who will come in when hop a long comes back, exciting times
-
Another very serviceable game.
Should play out the whole year. Has been patient, stuffed around and earned his spot.

Id go with that just servicable.Maybe my expectations are too high but we dont get enough out of him or Dow for that matter.
-
Come on he was solid and played his part
-
First on the list to be dropped. Too many turnovers
-
lmao - least of our worries.... :shh
-
Ross out with a foot injury :(.
-
Lukey Pookey strikes again...... >:(
-
I heard his foot got jammed in Pickett’s ass from pure frustration at all of those turnovers…
-
Out for 10-12 weeks with a stress fracture in his foot. :-\

Bloody Peter burge :shh

Just like his first year when Fyfe fell on his foot....only set him back 4 or 5 seasons.... :facepalm
-
What a terrible shame. He was showing plenty IMO.
Poor fellow.
This is all Meehans fault obviously for not ensuring the boys get enough calcium and vitamin D.
-
Bloody Peter burge :shh
Reoccurring soft tissue are one thing
Can’t blame them all on Meehan though
Stress fractures , knee medial ligaments etc
For instance , the hammy that Lynch did would have happened no matter who was in charge
All clubs have injuries

Stop being so reasonable.
It's Meehans fault.
(Agree on all points)

So his style of conditioning is not to be questioned? What foot was it? Toe surgery now this. His strike rate is abysmal.
We must have really unlucky players, much like what is going on at essendon. :shh

Going in for surgery
Richmond midfielder Jack Ross is set to miss up to eight weeks, after scans revealed a stress fracture in his foot.
Speaking to the media on Friday morning, coach Adem Yze said it was unfortunate news for the 23-year-old.
"He'll go in for surgery and I think it's going to keep him out for around eight weeks, which is really disappointing for him," Yze said.
"He was in really good form, he started to get some continuity as a midfielder for us, and he had an interrupted season last year as well.
"We'll wrap our arms around him and help him through it."

Ross signs on
By Richmond Media
Jack Ross will remain in yellow and black until at least the end of the 2026 season.
Richmond midfielder Jack Ross will remain at the Swinburne Centre for at least another two years, having signed on with the Club this week.
The fresh contract will see Ross, who has played 68 senior matches across six years, tied to Richmond until the end of the 2026 season.
Ross had a career-best year in 2023, averaging 18 disposals across 19 games, and had started 2024 in a similar vein before being sidelined by a delicate foot stress injury.
Despite a vastly interrupted pre-season, Ross helped to change the course of the game in Opening Round after he was injected as the substitute at half time.
Ross then averaged 21 touches across the next month of football before being ruled out due to his foot issue.
The 23-year-old, who joined Richmond with the 43rd pick at the 2018 AFL National Draft, has shown ability to contribute across various midfield roles in the past six years.
Ross broke into a formidable lineup for seven senior games in each of his first two seasons at the Club, which were premiership campaigns in 2019 and 2020.
The youngster received more opportunities through the 2021 season, including seven games as the substitute, before taking his game to the next level in 2022 as a regular AFL player.
Richmond General Manager, Football Talent, Blair Hartley, said that Ross could enter the next two years with great confidence despite an injury-affected year.
“Jack has impressed us with his application to his game and continual improvement across his time at the Club,” he said.
“Although his injury was unfortunate, he has shown great professionalism throughout the year.
“Jack is nearing full fitness, which is exciting. It will be great to see him back on the field very soon and contributing to us across the next two years and beyond.”
Ross added that it had been a challenging year.
"This year was not exactly what I drew up at the start of the year, but to have this (contract) now is definitely light at the end of the tunnel," he said.
"I am loving my time here, and I am just stoked to continue it for another two years.
"Hopefully, I can sneak a couple of games in (before the end of the year) and head into the preseason with a healthy body and can get after it."
Ross will enter a seventh and eighth season at Richmond through the contract extension.

Can't really see him getting a game next year ahead of all the young guns & future hall of famers we're about to draft.... :shh
-
with this signing and it looking likely Dion will get another contract (see Dion Prestia thread) it still leaves at least 15 or more blokes still coming out of contract
Next few weeks will give a really good indication of where the CLub sees itself
-
Ok with this.
1-2 years a good length.
Just hope he can get back to the same level he was playing at, or better.
-

He'll get a game easily with all the blokes supposedly heading out the door
-
Better than Hopper and arguably Taranto as well at this point....too bad all the future Brownlow medalists we're going to draft will push him out before the aforementioned because the club needs to justify their cost........ :shh
-
Very ordinary game so was hopper and Taranto. What was the go playing Taranto as a forward in the first quarter.
Very poorly coached again no physicality poor tackling team who likes it bruise free.
Have grave concerns about Yze.
Thank god just one game to go the end cannot come soon enough.
-
He was fine. Good even considering it was his first game in 4 stuffing months.
Hopper/Tarranto I agree didn't earn their match payment today

claw what was he like as a player? :shh
What message was Dimma sending in his early years? Very different to the ones Yze has sent out in his first year.
His messaging has to be different next year, it just must.

Spot on
Early on you could tell he hadn't played for 4 months
As the game went on improved markedly
Thought he one of our best in the end and we didn't have many

We have the slowest midfield in the comp and to go with that we are the worst tackling team well tackling is almost non existant and there is no pressure either. It has been that way all year with no improvement.
We constantly play with undersized teams and short teams. We allow insipd soft players to get away with being insipid and soft all year with no consequence, its okay they have some experience lol.
I can go on and on and on and people wonder why supporters are concerned.
Is he a good coach? well at this point in time i would say no. And yes i have taken into account injuries and so forth.
He does not seem to be setting any standards. What are his non negotiables? no one would have a clue.

The tackle on Chol in the goal square was pathetic

Lool what was he like as a player
Your putting the bread and butter of footy on a coach
Pressure, intensity and tackling is on the players no one else

I must admit I barely paid attention to yesterday’s game - but I could tell Ross has been sorely missed this season.
-
Ross training and playing in the scratch matches as an inside mid according to this article.

About stuffing time - back to where he belongs. :clapping

Yep. Is a natural inside mid. Will add something to our rotation and give us some pace and hopefully skill on a wing

Tigers inspired by ‘Hollywood Hawks’
Jon Pierik
The Age
March 12, 2025
Richmond midfielder Jack Ross says the Tigers want to emulate the “Hollywood Hawks”.
The Tigers open their 2025 campaign on Thursday night when they host Carlton at the MCG before what is expected to be a crowd of more than 80,000.
Under rookie coach Adem Yze, the Tigers finished at the foot of the ladder last year with just two wins, and a rebuild now in earnest has prompted many commentators to predict they will again finish last.
But Ross, an emerging midfielder/wingman whose 2024 season was ruined by a foot stress fracture, insists the Tigers have much to look forward to. This includes a raft of talented draftees, with three – Sam Lalor, Harry Cunningham and Luke Trainor – to step out against the Blues.
This bevy of talent, and a desire to emulate the process that led to the Hawks’ quick rebuild, and surge into the finals last season, has Ross looking forward to what awaits.
“I want to win. I want to get back to winning,” he said. “That’s what everyone who plays AFL wants – as a club we want to win. I am not going to shy away from that.
“It’s exciting. It can happen so quick. Even Hawthorn these past few years, they turned it around and have played such a fun brand to watch. We would love to think we can kind of replicate that and play some really fast, fun footy. If everyone is buying into the program, which is what we are doing, who knows what is going to happen.”
The Hawks returned to the finals for the first time in six seasons last year. The Tigers last made the finals in 2022.
Ross, 24, said midfielder Lalor, who has overcome a concussion and fractured jaw after an ugly incident against West Coast, was ready to impress.
“He has been awesome. All of the kids that have come in ask heaps of questions. They want to fast-track their learning, especially Sam, being a midfielder,” Ross said.
“He just wants to learn. He is a sponge. It’s a credit to him – with the jaw and surgery, he has rehabbed really well.”
Armstrong, said Ross, was a “big, strong full forward and really athletic for size”, while defender Trainor “was flexible with where he could play on tall and small”.
Ross was restricted to seven games last season because of a left foot stress fracture in his fifth metatarsal. While he returned late in the season, the former Oakleigh Chargers product has had to be mindful of potential flare-ups through summer.
“The foot feels good, touch wood,” Ross said. “It was one of those injuries – the fracture was in a really tricky spot. It takes a long time to heal, and once it does heal, it’s still a little bit angry
Ross, handed a two-year contract extension last year, and with 70 senior games to his credit, says he has taken a greater leadership role now many of the greats who carried the side to three premierships have left.
“Now, going into my seventh year, I feel like I have the confidence to back it up,” he said.
“I can lead for the younger guys, and hopefully, they can learn a thing or two. But I am also learning a hell of a lot off them. We have a lot of talent coming through.”
Ross said he enjoyed being a leader on game day, and ensuring “training standards” were met through the week.

I think he was Richie's older brother who appeared in the early episodes of Happy Days but was then never seen or spoken of again. :shh
