Your club’s best Rising Star hope
Chris Cavanagh,
Herald Sun
21 Jan 2019
They’re the players that give all fans hope for the future.
The next generation of superstars will step onto the AFL stage in 2019, or in some cases have already made their debuts.
The Rising Star Award is always one of the most hotly contested honours in the AFL and 2019 looks like being no different.
Chris Cavanagh sifts through every club for young talent who will become SuperCoach gold:
RICHMOND: SHAI BOLTON
With Dan Butler set to return from injury, it will not be easy for small forward Bolton to break into the Richmond side but he believes he can. Possessing a stunning highlight reel, Bolton won the VFL Goal and Mark of the Year awards last season, having been stuck in the seconds for all but three games. However, the 20-year-old chose to stay at Punt Rd and signed a new one-year deal for 2019, the Tigers confident the “extreme talent” - who was pick No.29 in the 2016 draft - can find more consistency in his game.
TAB Rising Star odds: $34
SuperCoach: $146,600, Fwd

Your club's NAB AFL Rising Star contenders

RICHMOND
Best chance: Ryan Garthwaite (BetEasy odds: $34)
With Alex Rance requiring a knee reconstruction after rupturing his ACL, Garthwaite is expected to play the vast majority of the season. He has missed the first two games after suffering an Achilles injury in the pre-season, but is building match fitness in the VFL. A young key defender on the rise, Garthwaite has benefited from two years away from the spotlight, developing his game in the twos while training with star defenders Rance, David Astbury and Dylan Grimes.
Other chances: Liam Baker (three games), Noah Balta (one game), Riley Collier-Dawkins (yet to debut), Jack Ross (yet to debut)
Nippy small forward Baker has good awareness but is probably just out of the best 22. Balta's versatility at either end of the ground means he is likely to add to his first senior game in round one, while draftee midfielder Ross and Collier-Dawkins should play AFL this year.
Other eligible players: Shai Bolton (nine games), Callum Coleman-Jones, Derek Eggmolesse-Smith, Luke English, Ben Miller, Patrick Naish, Sydney Stack, Fraser Turner (all yet to debut).

Balta or Ross. If Garthwaite plays, he will be the type that goes under the Radar (ala Grimes and AA selection)
-
Maybe Stack?
Let's see what happens Saturday

Missed out again this week. A bit hard to get a nomination when some kid at another club kicks 5 goals.

Bit of a luxury winning games and having 6 guys playing so far (Baker, Balta, Bolton, Ross, Stack, Garthwaite) who are eligible for the rising star.
-
I put a $50 on Sydney Stack for the Rising Star on Sunday after watching his game on the Saturday night at $26
Now he is paying $34
WTF!

Once he gets a nomination, he'll come right in.

We missed out on a nomination once again.
Congratulations to the round six NAB AFL Rising Star nominee, Xavier Duursma!

Rising stars, so our 'eligibles' who could have a shot are
Balta, Stack, Ross, Baker?
-
Bolton too
-
AFL have a vendetta against us.
-
Bolton too
Bolton? What is the eligibility criteria, I thought he played some games in 2017 or 2018

Must be aged under 21 and have played fewer than 10 games by January 1st 2019. Both Bolton (played 9 games) and Baker (turned 21 end of jan) just sneak in.

Ty
-
Think they changed it after Andrew Raines turned 40 and almost won our BnF & Rising star in the same year
-
Age restriction is stupid. Fewer than 10 games also stupid, you'd think 20ish is more like it
-
Disappointing to have such a dreadful team performance when we would've had a good chance to finally get a rising nomination this week.
Stack, in his fifth game, had 19 disposals, three inside-50s, six intercepts, four tackles, four score involvements, two goal assists, kicked a goal and took seven marks.
Baker, in his seventh game, finished the match with 18 disposals, six marks, five inside-50s, six tackles, five score involvements and one goal
Ross, in his fourth game, had 15 disposals, five inside-50s, four clearances, three tackles and kicked a goal (his first in AFL football).

Stack still a very good chance this round
-
North's Cameron Zurhaar got the nomination this week for his 5 goals.

Surely we are due for a rising star this week?
Bolton 16 disposals, 7 tackles, 4 goals.
Stack 18 disposals, 7 marks, 6 tackles, 1 goal off HB.
Baker 19 disposals, 3 tackles, 1 goal.
Balta 13 disposals, 12 hitouts, 5 clearances, 2 tackles.
Garth 11 disposals, 8 marks, 5 rebounds, 9 one percenters.
-
Shai for me
-
Balta deserves it for impact and relative difficulty of task.
Seriously huge game
-
Is Bolton even eligible? Third year player with more than 10 senior matches... :shh
EDIT: From what I read on the ever reliable Wikipedia he is....just....I think... :shh :shh

Bolton for me too.
Incredible game.
We have some seriously good kids coming through.
Looking forward to seeing Naish, CCJ and RCD soon too.
Keep playing the kids

Every other week you could probably say fair enough but that is a ludicrous decision.

Gryan does have dreadlocks

Are Wimpley, Shocking & Clangerfield all on that commitee as well? :shh

One of the Rising Star selectors, Brad Johnson, admitted last night that he didn't see the Tigers game... ::)
-
Jack Ross deserved a nomination now he is out for werks. Thats why these bozos shouldnt be on these types of panels.
For us I think by the end of 2019
We will have atleast 4 nominations possibly 5 headlined by Syd Stack and Shai Bolton.
-
Surely between Balta and Stack we will finally get a rising star nomination this week :pray.
-
Didn't that little flog from the dogs get 28 touches?
If Brad Johnson is a judge, surely a Bulldog will get favoured

Well that gave it last week to Myers for his run of form despite getting less possies than a few of our cubs. Balta and especially Stack's form haven't been a one off.
-
Honestly couldn’t care less at this stage.
Balta and Stack in particular are playing with composure years ahead of where they should be.
It’s a joy and a pleasure to watch our club these days. Reward enough for me.

In just his eighth match, Balta put his name forward for a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination.
But so did a number of other Tigers. Sydney Stack was again composed down back, winning 17 disposals from seven marks. Liam Baker had 13 disposals, eight marks and kicked a nice goal. Shai Bolton was electric alongside him, even if he floated in and out of the game.
Fortunately for Hardwick, he doesn't have to choose which one is nominated. He's just appreciative of the hard work of his youngsters to cover for a long, experienced injury list.
"I'm not sure how it works," Hardwick said.
"It was stiff that poor old Jackson Ross, who has been in outstanding form, he's out for eight weeks so he probably doesn't get his nomination.
"I think any of our players are capable of getting it. Noah Balta, Shai Bolton, Sydney Stack and Liam Baker have had their opportunities.
"Our development boys have stood up and performed really, really well. They're quality lads, quality players and they're going to improve as well."

Ashley Browne on SEN this arvo said there's some suspicion out there that this week's nomination will be a Tiger.
He also interestingly added that those who decide these nominations arrange them to pick the kids they want nominated by the end of the season. He gave the example without names from a few years back of there being a double nomination for one round late in a season because they feared one of these kids would miss out.
-
Bailey smith got it.
The wait goes on
-
Screw this. Kids don't worry about this award and get yourself a premiership medallion
-

So Brad Johnson works at Geelong and played at the bulldogs...... :lol
