Title: Skills - Chocco Royal has alot of work to do
Post by: mightytiges on April 01, 2006, 01:10:41 AM
Sheesh we must be the dumbest and poorest skilled side in the comp. Confidence play a big part but how many simple targets did we miss time and time again by hand and foot. Nothing new sadly. Then there were the cross-field kicks to stationary teammates who were outmarked by bulldogs opponents or just straight to bulldogs :banghead.

If there was one thing I would change at training it would be our coaches getting tougher on skill errors during drills. I remember about a month ago watching Wheadon take the NAB cup squad through some kicking drills at Punt Road Oval and the squad were asked to kick 4 different ways - towards the chest of the receiver then the head as well as spinning the ball through the air and drilling firm passes. It was noticeable as others around commented that some of our guys weren't following instructions and were just passing their own way in each of the 4 drills. The drill should have been stopped and everyone told to do it as instructed. If you can't do it at training under no pressure then you ain't gunna do it during a real game.

lmfaoooo@Foley doing a stab pass to Deledio on the lead when Deledio was a metre behind the defender.

lmfaooooo@Deledio still being good enough to mark the ball and make it look like it wasn't a totally idiotic pass by Foley.

Agree to an extent MT.  Skill is one of those things you can't fully teach at training.  It's more to do with the mind than the technique itself.  A player can practice all he likes and may seem to be able to perfect it at training but under real game pressure if he isn't mentally tough enough to withstand that pressure then he will most likely stuff it up.  It's got to do with technique plus the pressure absorbtion ability of the mind.

Agree with what you've said Harry but what I'm saying is we have blokes who don't perform the kicking drills to a satisfactory level even at training. For a side which must turn over the footy more than any other such sloppiness at training shouldn't be tolerated.

As i mentioned to Jackstar at the game last night, our team is not skilled enough to play the style of play Wallace and Co wants.

As Harry says, you cant really teach people better skills at this stage of their careers.

We need to play the long and direct style in my opinion. Have Richo, Staff, Schulz etc up forward and kick it long and straight.

What peees me right off is that guys who continually kick the ball 20- 25 metres and chip the thing  around while the opposition push back and flood our forward line.
Watching the doggies last night, its amazing how quick an ORDINARY team can move the ball from one end of the ground to the other by FOOT !
I am sick to death of our captain kicking the ball to a team mate 20 metres away who is going to get clobbered when he marks when there are guys screaming for the ball in the corridoor 50 metres away ! :banghead
