Richmond to play first Launceston game since 2013, but Dustin Martin in doubt after knee scare
Adam Holmes
The Examiner
5 March 2019
Tasmanian Richmond fans will be keeping a keen eye on the team sheet for their preseason game at UTAS Stadium on Saturday night - the first time the club has played in Launceston since 2013.
Star Tiger Dustin Martin landed awkwardly on his knee in their first hitout last weekend and was in some doubt to play, but Hawthorn were set to field a close-to full strength side.
The ground holds fond memories for Martin, who played his first game for the Tigers in a NAB Cup match against the Hawks in 2010 at UTAS Stadium, formerly Aurora Stadium.
UTAS Stadium manager Robert Groenewegen said they were hoping for a crowd of 10,000 with over 5000 tickets already sold, but was realistic given the preseason games no longer have a competitive edge.
"We're expecting a bigger crowd than if it was any other club because Richmond are well supported," he said.
"It's great to see them here - obviously we will never have them for a roster game.
"I expect Hawthorn to play a very strong team, that's the way they've set themselves up
"Richmond played a stronger team than Melbourne in their first match in Shepparton, which means they're more unlikely to play a full strength team for this match, plus they have a Round 1 game on a Thursday."
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick played down the seriousness of Martin's injury, and he returned to the field afterwards.
Richmond's last competitive match in Launceston, against the Hawks in 2006, drew the venue's record crowd of 20,971.
They also played at the ground in 2010 and 2013 in preseason competitions, both drawing crowds above 10,000.
All club members get free general admission entry for all north, east and south terraced seating. The match starts at 7.10pm.

Another game another poor start. 12-0 down
-
Make that 18-0
-
Must be a massive breeze
-
Cannot get our hands on the ball. Ball use crap particularly going forward. Butler snags one with good pressure 18-6
-
Higgins entries inside 50s a worry
-
Another one to them. 24-7. We look off early on
-
Goal to nank.
14 - 24
-
Hawthorn is giving Richmond a taste of its own medicine, capitalising from intercepts. All four goals have been launched from that source, but specifically the Hawks have won three intercepts inside forward 50 with all three resulting in goals.
https://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/jlt-community-series/2019/2/haw-v-rich
-
5 straight to them.
14 - 30
-
So many errors, goal them 30-14.
-
McIntosh inside 50 towards Higgins but it ends up a point.
15 - 30
They've kicked 5 goals from just 9 inside 50s.
-
Quarter time
Richmond 2.3-15
Hawthorn 5.0-30
Goals: Nankervis, Butler.
-
Hawks good quarter, we were very ordinary with the footy. Hawks flooding back then spreading forward and were caught out a few times.
-
Just not winning enough of the ball in the middle.
Disposals: 76 - 108 ( cont. 33 - 42 )
Clearances: 9 - 8 ( centre: 2 - 6; stoppages: 7 - 2 )

Possies:
Dusty 10
Prestia 8
Higgins 6
Cotch 5
Graham 5
Edwards 4
Lambert 4
Rance 4
Rioli 4
A very efficient quarter for the Hawks, controlling possession to ensure results when venturing forward. The Hawks had 24 per cent more time in possession than the Tigers, with five straight goals managed from just nine forward 50 entries.
https://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/jlt-community-series/2019/2/haw-v-rich
-
No change in qtr 2 goal them 36-15. Hit a Target ya Muppets.
-
Playing into their hands. Hawks love to mark and keep possession and we're allowing them to play how they want by kicking it to them :P.
-
That sums us up tonight. Rance passes to Henderson 35 out. Lucky the latter hits the post.
We're off :P.
16 - 37
-
This is as bad as we've been for 3 years. Rance embarrassing. Not too many looking for body contact. I'm switching this off. Might watch the woman's footy. Goodnight
-
Prestia wobbles a point.
17 - 37
-
Absolute rubbish
-
Basic mistakes. Dropped marks, simple turnovers, etc ... Think the first half of the St Kilda game at Docklands in 2017.
Marks: 28 - 50
Another two goals to them. That's 8 goals from just 14 inside 50s :help.
17 - 50
-
Another missed target coming out of defence. We keep possession then turn it over going forward :P.
Dusty inside 50 to Butler who marked. He played on and stuffed up a certain goal :facepalm.
-
These blokes look like they don't give a flying flock tonight.
-
The only positive is this is a practice match.
Why did we fly down? It's been a total waste of time unless we just wanted a bruise free jog around.
18 - 57
-
Kicking for goal is an absolute joke 2.7
-
This will be a 100 point flogging. Practice match or not you can't just flick a switch going into round one. Almost unwatchable
-
Even when we do get it forward we can't kick a goal :facepalm.
Edwards misses.
They go coast to coast for a set shot (point) and then another behind.
19 - 59
The Hawks have now taken six marks inside forward 50 from just 18 entries, with 12 scores (67 per cent of entries) in the process. Last season the Tigers conceded a score from just 39 per cent of inside 50s conceded, ranked equal-first in the league.

Does JLT really matter? :shh

Same issue tho cutting us up through the middle and playing keepings off.

Doesn’t look like there’s much effort tackling. Effort looks like 2016

Hawthorn 5.0 9.5 11.7-73
Goals: Riewoldt 3, Higgins 2, Weller, Balta, Butler, Nankervis.
----------------------------------------------------------
The Tigers are dominating out of the middle and the impact is being seen on the scoreboard. Richmond has won seven more clearances than Hawthorn, launching 25 points from their 10 clearances in comparison to no score by the Hawks.
Hawthorn has been particularly ill-disciplined this quarter and Richmond has been able to capitalise. The Tigers have won all eight free kicks and both 50-metre penalties for the quarter, kicking three goals directly from free kicks.

Following Richmond's dominance at the stoppages in the third term, Hawthorn has improved its output this quarter with four more clearance wins. The Hawks' kicking has also been far more effective than the Tigers' (67 to 44 per cent efficiency).

Agreed, Jack Higgins kept us in the game until 3qtr time as well
-
First half was a write off. Reminiscence of that St Kilda game in 2017. One concern is despite being able to put on the afterburners when we needed to, we have played catch-up due to two off quarters in both JLT games. Against Melbourne (1st, 4th) and tonight especially we were bruise free in the first half. We won't get away with this in the real stuff. Need to be switched on with our manic pressure from the first bounce.
Dusty 3rd qtr and Cotch in the last lead from the front when it mattered.

Totally agree there won't be able to that in the real stuff.Wasn't happy to how hawks went through the middle to easy first half that was a issue last season.Defence needs to tighten up to we cannot allow teams to isolate Rance with there big forwards.

Big name players attract fans from afar
Adam Holmes
Tasmanian Examiner
11 March 2019
For Richmond fan Oliver Wright, there was no better way to spend his first day in Tasmania than by getting the prized autograph of Dustin Martin on his back.
"Someone told me where the players were going to be when they get to the ground, so we went and Dusty signed my guernsey," he said.
Oliver came down to Launceston with his dad Ross Wright - a special treat for his son - and they had the best seats in UTAS Stadium in the front row on centre wing. It was the third time he had met Dusty and he was in prime position to meet the players after the game.
Mr Wright said they had enjoyed their time in Launceston - but just wished a few more places were open on a Saturday. They were confident the Tigers would have a successful 2019. "This was always meant to be their year, and winning the premiership in 2017 was a bonus really," Mr Wright said.
Emma Kirkhope, of Longford, took her Tiger fan daughters to the footy - and for some it was the first time they had seen their team play in Tasmania.
"We've gone to see them in Melbourne a few times," she said. "It's pretty awesome to see them here."
The Examiner spoke to Tigers fans as they made their way into the ground, and most had come up from Hobart. It was the first time the Tigers had played in Launceston since 2013 when they won with a kick after the siren in a preseason game against the Hawks.
Saturday night's match almost matched that excitement - Richmond coming back from 40 points down at half-time to win by eight.
Michelle Oliver and her son Josh made the trip from Hobart - complete with autograph-laden merchandise. Josh struggled to decide who he liked more - Dusty or Jack Riewoldt. But there was one thing he was sure of: a 2019 premiership for the Tigers. "I reckon they'll win it," Josh said.
Free entry for season ticket holders helped to boost crowd figures, along with both clubs naming strong teams. The official crowd of 6982 was one of the strongest so far in the 2019 JLT Series.
For Hawthorn, big recruits Chad Wingard and Tom Scully were missing, but the remainder had the look of a round one team. The Tigers were without new recruit Tom Lynch. The other big names were there though and played for much of the match: Dusty, Jack, Alex Rance and the rest.
Fans got the chance to have a kick on the ground after the match for about half an hour, before huge crowds gathered outside to see the teams board their buses.

60 per cent of teams with undefeated records in last year’s preseason went on to play finals – the best of any category – but they actually averaged less wins overall than the eight sides who went 1-1.
Why? Well, it was an eclectic group – including the minor premiers Richmond and finalists Sydney and Melbourne, but also the two worst teams of the year in Carlton and Gold Coast.
Of the teams this year who’ve managed to go 2-0, I’d say Brisbane, Adelaide and Richmond all have good cause to believe those results are more than just good luck.
The Tigers have gone up against two of last year’s preliminary finalists and looked the part against both of them.

The JLT series is hard to judge as every side is experimenting and managing players. Dusty was rested at 3/4 time in both games; Melbourne were without Gawn, Jones and Viney; while the Hawks rested Sicily after half-time which freed up Jack.
Georgies, we're heavily reliant on Dusty and Cotch at centre clearances when we need a matchwinner. Our midfield depth is going to be tested against the top sides who bat deep in their rotation. Both games showed what we already knew: that if we lose the manic pressure, contested footy and clearances badly then we're susceptible as it puts our backline on the back foot and separates them into one-on-one situations which are difficult to defend; conversely, when we win or at least match the opposition in those key stats then we are a dangerous side that can set up repeat F50 entries and score quickly.
-
Jack was freed up because Clarkson took Frawley off him and sent O'Brien, who's a forward, to him...that kind of stuff won't happen in the season proper.... :shh

Hawk fans did give O'Brien BOG for us lol. Jack was too smart for Frawley in the end too.

True, however, we were also being smashed in the centre so Jack was getting no ball delivered with any purpose during that period. After half time we started winning the centre clearances and the ball was heading down there quickly, so it's difficult to know what their initial structures, although successful early on, would have been able to withstand.
-
“We played pretty poorly in that first half and Hawks played fantastic footy. We were able to get our game up and going, which is a good sign,” Riewoldt told ‘Fox Footy’.
“The third quarter was really impressive and then, I know we’re not playing for points, but just to continue to finish the game there means we’re going to go into two weeks’ time (season-opener) in really good stead . . .
“The group’s in a really good spot. Hopefully we get a couple of additions going into Round 1, which is exciting.
“We’ve had a really good summer and we’re looking forward to the season.”
“We don’t rant and rave, because we’ve always got belief in ourselves that whether we’re up at half-time, or down at half-time, we feel we’re always in the game,” he said.

Houli, acknowledging that football is “not made to be perfect”, said the Tigers' system allows players to maintain confidence in situations such as Saturday night's early deficit.
“We’ve realised the areas that we need to improve throughout pre-season, we work on them,” he said.
“We know we’re going to fall short in areas throughout the year but we just have to compensate in other strengths… (in both JLT matches) we had a very slow start.
“But through our experience and our confidence of our system, we know that we can always come back and be the true Richmond players that we can be.”
With the round one season opener against Carlton just nine days away, the premiership backman said the group has “ticked off a few boxes” this pre-season while still leaving room for improvement.
“We don’t want to be at the top of our game just yet,” he said.
“We want to work for something greater and bigger down the track.”

Those last 2 lines might come back to haunt him and us.
Assume nothing in this competition - hard to believe that Freo finished on top of the ladder at the end of season 2015.
