Match preview: Richmond v Melbourne
AFL.com.au
Sarah Black
Apr 22, 2019
Where and when: MCG, Wednesday April 24, 7.35pm
Last time they met: MCG, round five, 2018: Melbourne 8.8 (56) lost to Richmond 15.12 (102)
The final margin hides the fact this was a hotly contested, physical game. Richmond, boosted by an even contribution across the park, wore down the Demons to blow out the difference from 19 points at three-quarter time to 46 by the final siren.
What it means for Richmond: The continued righting of the ship. After a disastrous opening few rounds with two 40-plus-point losses and injury to star players, the Tigers sit at 3-2 coming into this match.
What it means for Melbourne: Salvaging of pride. Last weekend was a horror show for Melbourne, comprehensively outplayed by an improving St Kilda. In an even season, every win counts, but one over Richmond would be a confidence boost.
How Richmond wins: Speed. Fortunately for the Tigers, they have it in spades. Melbourne were slow and beaten on the outside last week and Richmond is in a good position to exploit it again.
How Melbourne wins: Clearances have been Richmond's Achilles heel the past few years, and Melbourne has some of the stronger inside midfielders in the competition. Using Max Gawn's ruck work to advantage is vital.
The stat: Richmond superstar Dustin Martin regained some form last week against Sydney but playing Melbourne has often been an issue for the midfielder. Martin averages 22 disposals against the Dees, which most players would be pleased with, but it's his second-lowest return.
The match-up: Tom Lynch v Sam Frost
With Oscar McDonald out of favour, Melbourne's one recognised key back is Frost (229th overall in the Official AFL Player Ratings). He will be up against Tom Lynch (207th), who was goalless last week, but kicked 16 in the first four rounds.
It's a big week for: Tom McDonald
It's been a horrible start for the Melbourne key forward. He hasn't been helped by poor delivery inside 50, but McDonald has only kicked two goals this year. Was moved onto the wing against St Kilda in a bid to get him involved.
Big call: Jack Riewoldt will return with a bang after missing three games with a wrist injury and kick four goals.
Prediction: Tigers by 27 points

I Heard the D's rested players as they thought SK was a walk up win?
A few ins for them this week IHH

Stage is set for a "backs against the wall" effort from Melbourne - who always grow an extra leg when they play us anyway... :shh

They really are pumping up Melbourne aren't they ::).
We need to match Melbourne's faux intensity early on. If the Dees don't get any reward & confidence from it then it will fall away.
-
Top smother Rossy.
-
Same HTB non frees as last week I see. McDonald just dropped the ball.
-
LOL. We get pinged instantly and it's called HTB ::).
-
Houli nice pass to Caddy on the wing. Hands over to Kmac who runs to 50. Kicks to the twin towers and Lynch waits out the back to mark. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 1.0-6
Melb 0.0-0
-
Terrible defending Tiges. Sheds shouldn't be left to contest by himself against their forwards for that high kick to the hot spot.
6 all.
-
Dumb Baker. Needed to switch the play and open up the field.
-
Geez we're doing dumb things.
It doesn't help when Gawn is allowed to push our players in the back in the contest.
Getting smashed in the centre clearances.
6 - 12
-
All our attacks need to start from defence.
We get forward to Caddy 60 out. Goes long and it's a point.
7 - 12
-
Another to them.
7 - 18
It's all starting in the centre. Gawn handing it to their mids on a plate.
-
Goal to George.
But we stuffed up another chance. Jack couldn't pick up the ball :P.
We go inside 50 again but we're to panicky and they get out.
They go down the other end for a goal :banghead
13 - 24
-
We are just bombing it high and hacking it forward inside 50.
Lucky hack off the ground by Lambert to the top of the square and Ellis is alone to mark. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 3.1-19
Melb 4.0-24
-
How is that not 50?
-
Blue by Stack then.
Point to Melbourne.
19 - 25
-
Great mark Jack. To Stack in the middle. Hands to Lambert who gets the free. Goes to Lynch against 3 and Melbourne clear out.
Goes to Floss. To Sheds. His spearing pass to George is dropped and that's the siren.
Quarter time
Richmond 3.1-19
Melbourne 4.1-25
Goals: Lynch, Castagna, Ellis
-
Not a good start but we are only a goal down.
-
Did better towards the end of the quarter in reading Gawn's taps. That at least balanced the clearances at stoppages. Got smashed in the first 20 mins.
Too Lynch-centric going inside F50. Need to lower our eyes rather than bombing it high. IMO we're going too fast with the ball forward of centre. Need to have a bit of control and find the best option.
We also don't have smalls front and square running past the pack and into goal when the ball goes off hands behind Jack and Lynch.
-
Missing too many bread and butter targets by hand and foot :banghead.
-
Rioli did the hard part but then kicks it OOTF :P.
-
More volleyball than football from us.
It finally comes off. Goal to Baker :gotigers.
Rich 4.1-25
Melb 4.1-25
-
Jack is marking everything tonight. Misses though from 35.
26 - 25
-
:facepalm.
The dee defender drops a sitter from the kick-in 25 out but Rioli misses.
27 - 25
-
Astbury had hurt his ankle. Rolled when stepped on.
-
Dee OOTF in our D50. Houli to the wing. Prestia off the contest to Ross who hits up Jack 45 out. Shot wide and doesn't make the distance and Melbourne mark.
Great mark by Stack. Goes forward. prestia snap in traffic is a point.
28 - 26
-
Jack from 50 to the square. Falls to Dusty who goals! :gotigers
Rich 5.4-34
Melb 4.2-26
-
You can't wait for the ball to arrive George.
Inside 50s: 31 - 20
-
Cut out the cute stuff Tiges :banghead
-
Throw-in F50. Gawn whacks to straight to Baker 40 out but he sprays it OOTF :P.
Geez we've missed chances this quarter :scream
-
Problem with us at times is we don't know when to hand off to a teammate. Why have a chain of handpasses starting dead in front on 50 and head towards the pocket, what's the point, just run straight and kick the goal. Very frustrating watching loopy handballs to players in worst positions.
-
Half-time
Richmond 3.1 5.4-34
Melbourne 4.1 4.2-26
Goals: Lynch, Castagna, Ellis, Baker, Martin.
Dominated the inside 50s in that 2nd quarter but didn't put it on the scoreboard.
-
Astbury ankle? bad?
-
Astbury ankle? bad?
No news yet. He couldn't put weight on the ankle and was taken straight down to the rooms. Best case scenario is it is only a bad sprain and it needs to be re-strapped. Worst case is he's injured ligaments and will miss weeks :-\.
-
Astbury ankle? bad?
he pointed to his ankle - I’m hoping it’s a sprain although we might be better off with another small down there anyway
-
That 2nd quarter was a snoozefest. :sleep
Two power forwards and we can’t kick it to advantage of the forward? :banghead
-

Agree Lozza.
It's too much Harlem globetrotters. We're doing the fancy tap-ons even when a normal boring old-school disposal is the best option. It's over-possessing on steroids and as you say Lozza it's going to teammates in worst positions which is stuffing up goal chances :scream.

Richmond continue to dominate forward half intercepts, winning 18 so far compared to just seven for the Demons. This has resulted in six more inside 50s for the Tigers. Nathan Broad and Jack Riewoldt have won three forward intercepts each.
The Tigers have managed to gain the ascendancy at stoppages this term, leading clearances 10 to four. They have not been able to capitalise on this dominance however, with both sides only kicking the two scores sourced from stoppages.
Melbourne was held goalless in the second quarter, the fourth-time this year that the Demons have failed to kick a goal in a quarter. In 2018, the Demons were held goalless in just six quarters throughout their 25 matches.

Astbury came out after half-time later than the group but he has gone onto the ground with them now to test out the ankle.
Ch 7 showing Astbury is moving better now. He jogged off to the bench.
-
Lynch did well there but rushed by Melbourne.
35 - 26
-
:facepalm.
We gave it straight to them twice in our D50. They stuffed up the first chance and so we gave them another :banghead.
35 - 33
Absolute slop from us this qtr.
-
One of the worst games I've ever watched...
-
Geez we're doing our best to stuff up everything.
Lucky george copped a high tackle. Misses from 40.
36 - 34
-
Can't stand this cute staff kick the goal if it's there fullstop.
-
You can see by the lack of numbers to the contest that we're off this qtr.
-
OMG George hit a target (actually it was a good kick) . Finds Jack 30 out. Goal!
Boy did we need that!
Rich 6.6-42
Melb 5.5-35
-
Playing really dumb football school yard stuff. To cute at times.Again the chemistry between midfield and forwatd line failing.Keep it simple and kick the goal if it's in sight not handball it around like a raffle.
-
Every time we get the ball we fumble and stumble.
Somehow it gets to Baker who gets it over the back to Jack who marks 20 out. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 7.6-48
Melb 5.5-35
-
Three marks to our tall forwards in a row.
Lynch misses from the pocket.
49 - 35
-
We intercept Gawn's long kick out of defence. Higgo finds Rioli in the pocket. Misses too.
50 - 35
-
Lower your eyes with Gawn play loose in defence.
-
That's holding the ball to Balta! :banghead
-
That's a mark to Lynch you cheats! >:(
-

Edwards is having a shocker!
-
3/4 time
Richmond 3.1 5.4 7.9-51
Melbourne 4.1 4.2 5.5-35
Goals: Riewoldt 2, Lynch, Castagna, Ellis, Martin, Baker.
-
To many misses could come back and haunt us :san:banghead.
-
Should be 5 goals in front
-
At least Melbourne don't look like scoring .
-
I'm at the game at is a shocking standard......
-
Mcintosh Castagna very ordinary today. Sooner Cotchin comes back and we continue to blood the youngsters the better.Seriously there is no place in this side for Castagna.
-
We're fortunate our defence doing their job well (Floss is killing it tonight) and that Melbourne are crap because we are butchering it especially going inside F50. Some of the skill level is U10s. If we were playing Collingwood tonight we would be 10 goals down.
-
For tonight we just need the 4 points
-
For tonight we just need the 4 points
True.
LOL Stack just nailed Viney :clapping
-
We have Jack & Lynch in the corridor advantage side and Sheds kicks it to the pocket to the Dee defenders' advantage.
-
All we have to do is keep it simple we win this if we can do that.
-
Another mark to Lynch not paid >:(. The Dee defender is punching it out after Lynch marks it :banghead.
-
Caddy marks by the boundary. Misses.
52 - 35
-
Is Dusty playing?
-
Hooray you finally saw a mark you yellow muppet ::)
-
Is Dusty playing?
Tagged by Hibberd. Kicked one goal.

Great handball through the legs by Ross to Baker who finds Nank on the lead 40 out. Off hands for a point.

Good forward pressure causes the turnover. Ross' snap misses.

If we don't take these chances against the top teams will be in trouble.

I’m not as down on the performance as most here. Controlled the entire game, dominated the territory battle, tackling and pressure were great. Obviously we could have been cleaner and our entries inside 50 needs improvement and helps that Melbourne are pee poor atm.
Youngsters continue to impress, Baker and Stack (that bump :thumbsup) are jets and I thought balta did really well against Gawn in the ruck second half after struggling in the first.
If everyone pulls up ok I can’t see a player being dropped with Cotchin still a couple of weeks away.
Think shedda needs the captaincy back :snidegrin
-
It wasn't pretty but still impressive.
Melbourne gifted their only two goals after quarter time - one by us.. The other by the umps.
Sydney Stack - I love him.
-
Interesting stat from the game tonight.
We laid 76 tackles for the game, and only 3 Tigers failed to lay a tackle.
Grimes
Broad
Astbury
Amazing to think that none of our key back men had to lay a tackle.

Tigers end up 43 point victors on the back of some intense forward half pressure. They won 28 more forward half intercepts, recorded 29 more inside 50s and had the ball in their forward half of the ground for 20 more minutes than the Demons.
Richmond has laid 20 more tackles than the Demons, despite winning 30 more disposals. When broken into zones, the Tigers have laid 19 more tackles in their forward half, and lead forward 50 tackles 17 to three.

what the stuff was going on all night with the umpire letting them smash the ball out of Lynches mitts after he marked it? And he just calls play on and ignores the mark? Happened like 4 or 5 times in the first half of the game, I couldn't believe it, am I delusional or did it happen?

I am with you Owl, just posted similar in the umpiring are maggots thread

Will watch the replay at some stage but watching it live last night gee Vlastuin and Grimes controlled the back half perfectly. Houli was sensational as was Ross, Stack, Prestia and others, however the one who caught my eye was Baker. He is so clean and makes great decisions...very similar to Edwards in the way he sees the game and can see space which not many can see. I will also note his gut running to push himself to multiple contests is outstanding:clapping
Cant split my highlight for the night between the mark by Stack or the hit on Viney by Stack :shh
-
Positives for me were the tackling and the games of Stack, Vlastuin, Grimes, Baker and Lambert. Also a positive is we won the game without a big game from Martin or Rioli and that many players like Caddy had quiet games but we still won. Negatives for me were the disposal at times, the fact that we kept them in the game by failing to convert opportunities especially in the third quarter and the injury to Jack.

Richmond vs Melbourne - things we learned
By Joel Bowes
The Pinch Hitters
26 April 2019
Simon Goodwin is struggling to provide answers
In a game that saw Richmond dominate for the the entirety of three quarters, it wasn’t actually the great defensive effort of the Dees that kept the score low. Instead, it was Richmond being completely wasteful. Play this game again, and Richmond could have won this game by 100 points. But despite Max Gawn saying it was better than what they dished up the week before, and Simon Goodwin saying that there are positives, I’m not sure if either of these statements are true. The 43 point margin flattered the Dees in every sense of the word – they were dominated in every part of the game. So Goodwin’s words in his post game presser? To me, he’s just saying what he has been told to say.
Am I watching 2017 again?
Richmond’s 2018 saw them get past teams with skill and a game plan that exploited their evident skill advantage that they had over nearly every team. 2017 on the other hand was a sight that saw the Tiges win games through aggression, tackling and intensity. For a Tiger fan who saw us win the flag off the back of that, and a defence that was stingier than ever, it seems as if it is back in 2019. Conceding just two goals in the final three quarters, Richmond looked as if they had turned the clock back to their premiership winning year. Yes – their past two weeks have only been against Melbourne and Sydney, but Richmond’s start to 2017 saw a quite soft start too, where they managed to get everything together at the right time. Their pressure is outrageous, and the forward 50 tackling they possess is outstanding. They have had 39 tackles inside 50 in the past two weeks – that is an alarming stat.
Richmond’s youth look ready made
A lot has been made of Sydney Stack, and rightfully so. But he looks like one of Richmond’s most experienced players, the way he attacks the ball and reads the game. His intercept work is something of a 100-gamer, and his ferocity at the football is making him a cult hero. Someone who hasn’t been spoken about as much is Jack Ross, a player who’s first three weeks have rivalled the likes of Sam Walsh. Ross had 28 touches on Wednesday night, including 14 in the last quarter when the game was still on the line. He was one of Richmond’s best and most important players, being apart of the starting four at most centre bounces. Pretty good for a third gamer. Then there is the resurgence of Liam Baker who looks like he may have replaced Dan Butler as one of the three forward amigos, and Jack Higgins who nobody really sees as a youngster anymore, because he looks so comfortable in a Tigers jumper. Richmond don’t seem to have any passengers at the moment, and similar to 2017, their bottom ten seem to be coming along very nicely.
Can an injury plagued Richmond win the flag?
Yes. If the Tigers can get themselves into a strong finals position, they will still be a threat come finals time. Collingwood are the only team to have beaten them at the MCG since the back end of the 2017 home and away season, many seem to forget that. Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt will be back in the next month or so, and by the looks of it, Richmond will be okay for now until this happens. If you told Damien Hardwick that his side would be 4-2 with all of their key players being out of the side at one point, which have included two interstate games and one against Collingwood, him and every other Tiger fan would have bitten your arm off. Richmond will still be a threat in September, and I’m sure there is no team that would want to come up against them at the MCG.

The Tigers have rediscovered their bite
Ben Guthrie
afl.com.au
29 April 2019
Throughout the 2017 finals series, Richmond's immense pressure and ability to keep the ball trapped in its forward half was the benchmark of the competition. In the first three weeks of this season, that staple of the Tigers' game style was missing in action. But that physical style has returned with a vengeance in recent weeks and their ability to force 47 forward-half turnovers in the Anzac Day Eve game was critical in Richmond's big win over Melbourne. Despite missing a number of key players through injury, the performances of players such as Liam Baker, Sydney Stack and Jack Ross have added plenty of energy and life into the Tigers' side. That those players have fitted in so seamlessly is a credit to the Tigers' system and the game style that they have developed.
