Match preview: Western Bulldogs v Richmond
Paul Bastin
afl.com.au
Apr 30, 2019 1:29PM
Where and when: Marvel Stadium, Saturday May 4, 7:25pm AEST
Last time they met: MCG, round 23, 2018: Richmond 15.8 (98) defeated Western Bulldogs 14.11 (95)
The Bulldogs challenged last season's minor premiers in the final round. Richmond star forward Jack Riewoldt kicked his 600th career goal in a bag of five, Dogs midfielder Jack Macrae had 43 touches and Brad Lynch's shot to pinch the result with seconds remaining hit the post. The win proved to be the Tigers penultimate in a record-breaking 22-game MCG winning streak.
What it means for the Western Bulldogs: Four losses in a row have the Dogs languishing two wins behind the eighth-placed Tigers. It's too early to say season-defining, but it's getting nearer that point.
What it means for Richmond: A spate of key injuries and two big defeats to Collingwood and GWS had the warning lights flashing. Three straight wins since then, led by Shane Edwards, Dylan Grimes and co., has shown the Tigers' maturity. They can't afford to drop these games in a log-jammed top eight.
How the Western Bulldogs win: The Bulldogs are 18th for goalkicking accuracy and have kicked more goals than behinds only once in 2019. If they clean up that vital part of the equation their contested work has them more than in the game.
How Richmond wins: Build the brick wall at half-back like they did against the Dees. Nick Vlastuin and Bachar Houli controlled proceedings and the tap-on Tigers kept the ball moving for the mosquito fleet up forward.
The stat: The previous five games between Richmond and the Bulldogs have been decided by 19 points or less.
The match-up: Sydney Stack v Bailey Smith
The draftees have had very different paths to their AFL dreams but are both having an exciting influence. Stack's bump on Jack Viney is still reverberating, and the buzz in the crowd when he's near the ball is tangible. Smith has settled into the midfield group and looks worth the pick No.7 used to obtain his services.
It’s a big week for: Luke Beveridge
Premiership coach Luke Beveridge will take charge of his 100th game for the Bulldogs. He has a winning percentage of 54.55 and needs to use every inch of his experience to arrest the slide.
Big call: Dustin Martin back in the Brownlow votes with 4+ goals
Prediction: Richmond by 24 points

Crunch ball game.
Dogs match up well on us, we have to win these types of games, no matter how ugly it is.

WESTERN BULLDOGS v RICHMOND (Patrick Bowden Cup)
Saturday May 4, 7.25pm at Marvel Stadium
How to watch on Fox Footy: Channel 504 from 7.15pm, with the Saturday Stretch team of Brad Johnson, Dermott Brereton and Sarah Olle.
Bulldogs’ burning question: Are things at breaking point?
If not, it’s very close. The Dogs have lost their past four games, including defeats at the hands of Gold Coast and Carlton. Yes they’re young and yes they’re contested footy and clearance game remains strong, but their inability to convert inside 50 and territory dominance is terrible — in fact, the worst Champion Data has ever recorded. Premiership coach Paul Roos said during the week that the Dogs’ dive down the ladder since winning the 2016 flag is “unprecedented” and deserves more attention. They can’t afford an ugly loss to Richmond.
Richmond’s burning question: How will they cope without Jack Riewoldt for a couple of months?
They coped fine in Round’s 3 to 5 and should be fine for the next eight. Why? Because their system is back. Over the past month, the Tigers have ranked first for time in forward half differential and averaged a league-high 33 turnovers per game, according to Champion Data. That is the Richmond brand — which was the trademark of its 2017 premiership — to a tee. Hard to see it changing anytime soon.
Fox Footy expert tipsters’ verdict: Western Bulldogs 1 — Richmond 4

View of the game from the enemy ....
Four things to watch: Bulldogs v Tigers
westernbulldogs.com.au
May 3, 2019 12:00PM
1. Lllllllllllllllllllloyd
Sam Lloyd has settled nicely into life as a Bulldog.
And this week he gets the chance to take on his former side for the first time.
The ex-Tiger has had an immediate impact in red, white and blue, and leads the goalkicking tally with nine majors from six games.
He’ll no doubt be keen to have a big impact on Saturday night.
2. Can the Dogs capitalise?
It’s been the story of the Dogs’ season, so far.
Only once – in round two against Hawthorn – have they kicked more goals than behinds, but in four of six games they’ve had equal or more scoring shots than their opponents.
Now is the time for the boys in red, white and blue to turn that record around.
They’ve got multiple avenues to goal, and will need to find a way to score against a Richmond side that has conceded just 67 and 42 points over the past two weeks.
3. Injury-hit Tigers find a way
No Riewoldt, no Cotchin, no Rance, no Astbury.
The Tigers might be missing some big names, but they keep finding a way and have won their past three matches.
New recruit Tom Lynch (17 goals) poses a big forward threat, while the Tigers’ experienced brigade have stepped up and found some support from fresh blood in the likes of Sydney Stack, Jack Ross and Liam Baker.
4. Tight tussles
Very little has separated the Bulldogs and Tigers in recent times.
In their past five meetings, the Bulldogs have come away with the points on four occasions.
However, the Tigers won the most recent clash in the final round of last year.
Three of the past five games have been decided by less than a kick, with the other two margins 10 and 19 points – an average margin of 7.8 points.

And Dimma's view of the Dogs:
“They’ve troubled most sides (in 2019), I reckon. They’re always in the game,” Hardwick said.
“I look at them at their best and they’re a scary side. They do things really well . . .
“The scoreboard hasn’t gone their way, but we look at them and the things that they’re doing, there’s a lot going right.
“There’s just a couple of pieces in their tool kit that aren’t working that well at the moment, but they could quite easily be fixed.
“We understand this is a really good side capable of playing some really good footy . . . We’d be thinking the Bulldogs at their best.”

Ch 7 are pumping up the doggies aren't they. They've mentioned "they match up well on the Tigers" about 10 times.
-
Ross side steps Cordy and a great kick inboard is marked by Kmac 35 out. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 1.0-6
WB 0.0-0
-
No one minding Bontempelli and he pushed forward for the easy reply.
6 all.
-
They are winning the early clearances.
-
Caleb Daniel inboard pass is cut off by Sheds. Off to Lambert who finds Caddy 25 out on an angle. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 2.0-12
WB 1.0-6
Needed that as the ball spent 5 mins in the dogs forward line.
-
Good forward pressure by Ross wins the ball. Gets to Kmac whose hurried kick misses.
13 - 6
-
Poor option Lambo. Should have given it off than kick long to a 1-on-2.
Good saving marks by Grimes and spoil by Kmac.
-
Good tackle by Lambert in the centre wins the free. Short to Dusty who goes long. Dogs rebound into an open forward line but luckily they miss the set shot.
13 - 7
-
Rioli with Daniels on his tail bounces from the wing inside 50 however his shot from 40 falls short and is marked by a Dog defender.
Dogs rebound coast to coast for another set shot. They miss again thankfully.
13 - 8
-
Poor defending. 2 Tiges vs one Dog forward who marks. Broad needed to go the punch.
They miss again. Lucky they are.
13 - 9
-
Gutsy by Rioli prevents a Dog marking on the wing. Lambert to Balta who marks. Goes long but it's rushed through.
14 - 9
Rioli taken off the ground.
-
Poor handball on the wing to a hot Tiger causes the turnover (pushed in the back not paid). Lloyd misses for them.
14 - 10
-
Stack lace out to Baker 35 out. Goal!
We make them pay for their misses.
Rich 3.2-20
WB 1.4-10
-
Quick reply straight out of the centre to them (ex-Tiger Lloyd).
20 - 16
They are winning that 'second' contest at the centre clearances. Frustrating.
-
They miss again.
20 - 17
-
Bolton streaming through the centre goes long. Balta dropped a sitter 20 out and then gets pinged.
-
Siren beats them going into attack.
Quarter time
Richmond 3.2-20
W.Bulldogs 2.5-17
Goals: McIntosh, Caddy, Baker.
Rioli off the ground still with a corked hip and getting his ribs checked.
-
Bolton streaming through the centre goes long. Balta dropped a sitter 20 out and then gets pinged.
would have helped if he’d had some support from his teammates
-
We must be getting smashed in the clearance stats. Our inexperience in showing a little tonight. Time for the leaders to stand up.
-
Balta you fu##king clown
-
Only our efficiency and their poor goalkicking is the reason we're in front. Dogs on top in general play (inside 50s: 10 - 16). We're playing more on the counter. We need to fix our set ups at stoppages. We get hands on the initial contest but then lose on the next which is allowing them to get cleaner clearances than us. We are also struggling to slow them down on transition (mind you they are too with us). Ball swinging from end to end with speed.
Floss also off having his ankle strapped. Great two off and it's only 1/4 time although Floss should come back on.
-
Terrible defending. Uncontested mark to them 10m out when we had time to get numbers back :banghead. That's where we miss a tall key defender.
23 - 20
-
I’m calling this. Bad signs.
-
LOL. So because Nank is big it's a free to them because they tackle is too strong ::).
Another F50 mark to them (up to 7). Now they aren't missing.
20 - 29
Wake up Tiges! Getting beaten in the contests.
-
Broad in the back?
-
Gone.
-
Getting killed out of the middle and not bringing in a replacement tall defender is hurting. Making Naughton (who is a good young player) look like Wayne Carey.
20 - 35
-
who is the useless prick for us in their goal square?
-
George too high?
-
ellis higgins castagna lynch
3 possesions or less.....
-
we are stuffing hopeless tonight, it is embarrassing
-
Saints vs Tigers 2017
-
It's like kick to kick in the schoolyard for Naughton. Leaped over 3 Tigers.
20 - 41
This could be a 100 pt loss if this keeps going. Really poor.
-
I know it us inky second quarter but not replacing Astbury with another tall looks like a selection mistake.
-
reckon this game might be done
-
Broad kicks it OOTF 25m away with Lynch on the lead in the pocket.
Nank tackle gets it back but his ping misses.
21 - 42
-
Some pathetic tackling attempts at HF just then.
-
Martin looks so off bigtime.Few seniors missing in action.
-
We finally get some good transition. Baker to Bolton on the wing to Caddy leading out the back 30 out. Now we are missing the set shots :scream.
22 - 43
-
Rioli can hardly run.
Free to Prestia for a hold at our forward throw-in. Misses as well from 35 :scream.
23 - 43
-
Stack with the moves at HB gets us clear. Bolton to Sheds who finds Rioli 40 out. Misses.
24 - 43
Don't get back into the game if you don't take your chances.
-
Not smart play Kmac. Needed to go back inside than go for glory from the boundary.
-
LOL not 15 ::).
Stack finds Houli 45 out. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 4.6-30
WB 6.7-43
-
that late bump on stack was spiteful, reckon they been trying to lay some hits on our blokes, that idiot who went knees into castagnas chest when he was taking a mark and arsed a mark, the Rioli knees into the ribs spoil etc.
-
Dusty drops a sitter :P.
Half-time
Richmond 3.2 4.6-30
W.Bulldogs 2.5 6.7-43
Goals: McIntosh, Caddy, Baker, Houli.
-
that late bump on stack was spiteful, reckon they been trying to lay some hits on our blokes, that idiot who went knees into castagnas chest when he was taking a mark and arsed a mark, the Rioli knees into the ribs spoil etc.
It’s called ‘going in harder’ unfortunately Owl.
-
Not doing the basic stuff manning up and poor positioning and rushing.Get back to basics. Our midfield and forward line there is no fluency and as usual don't take our opportunity.
-
Dusty lynch
Bolton Ellis
Absolutely pathetic half by those 4
-
Castagna is playing some comedy footy... :wallywink
-
I agree, but if we did any of those things, it would be free kicks and fifty metre penalties, stake my plums on it.
-
Worrying sign for me our senior players look down.Rioli been poor this year Martin looks way below average.
-
And we are playing utter poo.
-
The first 15-20 mins of that quarter was pathetic. Soft! Simply a lack of workrate compared to theirs. They were winning the contested footy, spreading and running us off our feet.
We then finally lifted our workrate. Reckon Nank throwing his weight around lead the way. We started to win some hard ball and get back into the game in the last 8 mins. Didn't take our chances though with only one goal from about 5 shots plus Dusty dropping a sitter 45 out on the boundary.
Lucky to be only 13 pts down when it looked like the game would blow out. Need to keep our workrate and intensity up. It's the only way for us. Hopefully Dimma gives them a blast at half-time as well as reminding the boys that the Dogs travelled back from Perth so if we can stick with them we may run over them in the last.
-
Rioli is not one of our issues imo. Defence looks pox atm. If they were kicking straight they would be another 4 or 5 goals ahead of us.
-
And midfield is non functioning.
-
In the last 10 minutes, the Tigers have won the contested possession count (10 to 7), intercepts (6 to 4) and inside 50s (5 to 2).
In a reverse of the first quarter, it is Richmond who have been inefficient in the forward half. Their kicking efficiency is just 36 per cent in this zone for the quarter.
Richmond finally get some reward for their dominance (6 of the last 7 inside 50s) with their 3rd goal from an intercept possession.
Stats:
Disposals: 162 - 200 ( contested: 63 - 59 )
Clearances: 13 - 16 ( centre: 5 - 6 )
Inside 50s: 22 - 28 ( marks in50: 6 - 11 )
Tackles: 29 - 29
Hitouts: 13 - 14
Frees: 6 - 7
Possies:
Stack 14
Lambert 12
Dusty 12
Prestia 11
Baker 10
Floss 10
Houli 8
Nank 8
Ross 8
George 8
Higgins 7
Caddy 7
Menadue 6

Castagna is the most frustrating player. Needs to be dropped. dont care who comes in, all castagna does is kill momentum and EFF everything up. Could get away with him in the team at full strength but not when we're exposed like this
-
Worrying sign for me our senior players look down.Rioli been poor this year Martin looks way below average.
Can be forgiving of Rioli tonight as he's playing under duress with that corked hip. He can barely run.
Dusty though is not having any impact with his possessions. Looks good on the stats sheet but chalk and cheese when compared to Bontempelli's game for them.
-
Be nice if we can hit up Lynch.
-
HTB against us but they feign a handpass then get caught and it's a ball up ::).
-
Balta :gotigers
Rich 5.6-36
WB 6.7-43
-
Nice goal Balta. Lynch has been underwhelming last couple of games
-
Balta read his own press today as the fastest man in footy :snidegrin.
-
Grimes literally gets dragged to the ground while trying to chase the ball and the umpire calls play on and it costs us a stuffing goal...wtf is going on...
-
Yep. Thanks ump for not paying that clear free ::).
From the throw-in they get a set shot and goal.
36 - 49
-
actually he was trying to take a mark....ROFL stuff me if that was so stuffing obvious...that was blatant football corruption or fraud or whatever you want right there on the big screen.
-
Prestia from the contest and Lynch has fat side space to lead into. Kicking from 40. Misses.
37 - 49
-
Over-cute bloody handballs :banghead.
-
They run it down for a goal :banghead.
37 - 55
-
Grease your arses up, gonna be a rough night.
-
Really concerned about Dusty.
-
Just not switched on simple and we hack our opportunity.
-
Dumb dumb dumb!
On our HF and we can;t win the contest and then allow them out by hand and it's another goal to them :banghead.
Then another uncontested mark to Naughton surrounded by Tiger defenders 10m out :banghead.
37 - 67
In 5 mins, we've caved :banghead.
-
Tons of short stepping going on out there atm
-
It's just dumb footy. Not protecting the defensive side of contests. Even at that F50 throw-in for us the Dogs we able to just run it away from the contest with no Tigers in front on them :banghead.
-
Lynch wearing iron gloves tonight.
That was HTB to us in our F50 btw.
-
Really concerned about Dusty.
Maybe Ramps had a point
Fleeced us millions won a cup now doesn't give a toss
Ellis has performed better than dusty this year if the truth be told
-
They give their opponents acres, can't win a contested mark, or ....omg what a stuffing debacle...!!!
-
Bad decision not to bring a replacement for Dave we were already one kp defender short in Rance.
-
When we have two defenders running into each other and coughing it up you know we're off.
Another to them.
37 - 74
-
Their Run off half back with zero pressure has been pathetic
We can't expect to compete with this list
-
Bad decision not to bring a replacement for Dave we were already one kp defender short in Rance.
Especially as every other side has exposed the Dogs for their lack of height. We instead tried to match-up on them small for small and it's burnt us big time.
-
Wish we would stop pinning em on the tit with our kicks
-
Not worth watching tonight guys.
Very disappointing loss to an ordinary side. They lost to Carlton and gold coast for Pete sake!!
Outsmarted ourselves at selection
-
Ellis just poo himself
-
Nice long goal by Ross :clapping.
Rich 6.7-43
WB 11.8-74
-
They aren’t working hard enough to do what makes us a great team. Not pressure in the ball carrier.
Our midfield is really poor tonight.
-
Two free Tigers short and Lambert kicks wide to a contest.
-
They aren’t working hard enough to do what makes us a great team. Not pressure in the ball carrier.
Our midfield is really poor tonight.
Agree.
Tigers trailing Dogs by 15-20m. Then lazy disposals with the ball. Not working hard enough.
-
ROFL they pay nothing for ripping off Boltons head but Nanks tackle gives them a free....stuff OFF
-
That's more like it Dusty.
Stack long goal :gotigers.
Rich 7.7-49
WB 11.8-74
-
Dumb handballs again :facepalm. Gifts them a goal.
49 - 80
-
Not even trying to contest marks makes my blood boil
-
3/4 time
Richmond 3.2 4.6 7.7-49
W.Bulldogs 2.5 6.7 12.8-80
Goals: McIntosh, Caddy, Baker, Houli, Balta, Ross, Stack.
-
with such a young team we are bound to have bad games.
-
with such a young team we are bound to have bad games.
True but a number of our senior players have been poor too.
-
with such a young team we are bound to have bad games.
This is correct but the effort from senior players tonight has been absolutely pathetic :banghead
-
with such a young team we are bound to have bad games.
Yep, but there are still worrying signs that have been there all year.
Our forward line is always clogged, we don't have enough guys who can take a grab around the ground, sloppy disposal.
-
with such a young team we are bound to have bad games.
Yep, but there are still worrying signs that have been there all year.
Our forward line is always clogged, we don't have enough guys who can take a grab around the ground, sloppy disposal.
Its coz our whole structure hes been thrown up in the air and there are new players trying to learn on the fly.
-
Dimma throwing the magnets around on the bench.
When you're getting smashed at the centrebounces, your forward line is not functioning and the backline is getting outmarked due to no tall defender then it's hard to turn things around, Dimma.
-
just running around our witches hats and kicking goals.
-
And that sums up our night. Beaten in 2-vs-2 on the wing and then allowing Richards to run inside 50 and goal :facepalm.
49 - 86
-
We can't cope with run and carry teams who link up well pies, gws etc dogs today.
-
oh look the umpy is evening up his free kick book now the game is shot to poo
-
Geez we've been mentally lazy tonight. Just dumb lazy disposals.
-
Bolton inside 50 to George 40 out. Misses.
50 - 86
-
George 1 tackle
Time for butler to come back and I'd like to see Higgins numbers. I feel he has done sfa this year
-
Reckon our match committee will want their time again with team selection. Turned a Bulldogs weakness this year into a strength.
-
Disgrace!
-
MenaSPEW
stuff he is poo
-
Dogs with 110 more disposals and more tackles. Just a lack of workrate and intensity tonight with and without the ball.
-
Set shot Baker. Misses.
51 - 93
-
We can't cope with run and carry teams who link up well pies, gws etc dogs today.
spot on.
-
Well Dimma won't be picking a team without a proper stuff ever again.
-
Faster, better marks, read the ball better, more aggressive, smarter, cleaner and ran rings around us all night. I'm having horror flashbacks
-
Lynch has had a game to forget. Dropped marks, too easily out-positioned tonight and no second efforts.
Rushed point to us.
52 - 99
-
Rioli needs a rest.
-
Where was our Plan B
-
See their bumps are ok and they can tackle push in the back but ours are all frees lol
-
It's been like watching U10s tonight as far as basic errors. Another dropped sitter (Broad who has been pushed forward)
-
Lynch literally held in a bear hug and the other stuffwit gets a free and fifty, im still trying to unpack that...
-
I never want to see Broad again, he is a clown.
-
See their bumps are ok and they can tackle push in the back but ours are all frees lol
Higgins dragged off the ball = no free.
We've been pathetic and we can't blame the umps but these frees are paid to Collingwood.
-
Nah it's just the icing on the cake that I am sick to death of seeing.
-
I never want to see Broad again, he is a clown.
Worst game I’ve seen him play. Comprehensively beaten and his skills were absolutely terrible tonight 36% efficiency :banghead
-
Final Score
Richmond 3.2 4.6 7.7 7.10-52
W.Bulldogs 2.5 6.7 12.8 15.9-99
Goals: McIntosh, Caddy, Baker, Houli, Balta, Ross, Stack.
:thumbsdown
-
We were beaten on every line tonight.
The midfield were thrashed and made it pretty difficult for our backs who were thrashed in the air.
Our forwards were also smashed with the ease the bulldogs were able to run it out of defence.
Really bad day at the office. We would struggle beating any team playing like that.
A lot of work to do.
-
How much does a free kick cost? :P
Nah, forget it ... we can't even BUY a free kick! :help
-
I never want to see Broad again, he is a clown.
Worst game I’ve seen him play. Comprehensively beaten and his skills were absolutely terrible tonight 36% efficiency :banghead
Broad can’t play a good ordinary game.
It’s either absolute poo or great.
-
Most were poor tonight but how bad was our mids and forwards...nowhere men tonight :banghead
-
Scoreboard flattered us when you look at the stats. We lost every single one and were smashed in most of them.
The Bulldogs were prolific from stoppages tonight, winning the count (42 to 34) and launching 13 scores to 4 from this source.
Disposals: 327 - 440 ( contested: 125 -136 )

I bet Dimma says this "the good thing is there's next week to rectify this week's performance"
-
Delivery to the forwards has also been poor this year.
-
We are in big trouble peoples
-
Negatives
People blaming Lynch no idea we just bomb it in how many lace out passes got a monster forward like that we don't utilise him well.
As mentioned 2 key backs out we don't replace one every team has exposed there lack of height dogs we got our pants pulled down made them look like stars.Poor coaching and selection.
Dimma hasn't come to grips with new rules either and teams who run and carry and link up like pies, gws and dogs today tear us apart to static.
Senior players weak effort tonight youngsters carried side.Martin is on that huge contract and needs to perform simple as that, said it before he made us go deep to the well to sign him no excuses.Rioli been poor all year to.
Difference between us and top sides is our skills gone backwards this year and accuracy big issue.
Positives
Youngsters Stack,Baker,Ross,Balta excellent.
-
Every win we get with our injuries is a bonus. Every loss unfortunately has been heavy.
-
Reminded me of that infamous St Kilda game of 2017 .
We just failed to get out of first gear.
-
That bloke wouldn't have got 2 marks if Rance was playing. How many did he grab on those guns
Weittering or Jones?

Most disappointing thing is the senior players didn't stand up
Nank was terrible, playing against a baby and was at times non competitive
Prestia, hello was he out there? That missed set shot was laughable
Caddy dropping marks he normally would gobble up
Lambert, plenty of the ball but .... quality is non existent
And don't get me started on Dusty.
I feel for Tom Lynch, he makes lead they get ignored and then they just bomb it long to him ....

I think considering our injuries a 4-3 record is not bad. However 3 losses at an avg of what 50 points is unacceptable. I really don’t understand why our pressure fluctuates so much. 6 tackles inside fwd 50 compared to around 20 the past couple of weeks says it all.
We have a habit of making avg players and teams look good and we did it once again. Almost 100 points conceded against the bulldogs who couldn’t buy a goal the past month :banghead
As for the players, no point signalling out anyone. Everyone bar 2-3 were poor both effort and skill wise.

Beveridge had his team up and about from the start, took away the Tigers’ strength in defence and minimised their control of the ball.
Midway through the second term, the Bulldogs’ pressure rating was at a sky-high 292 — more than 50 per cent above the AFL average of 179.
The pressure was such that the Tigers did not take a single mark in the opening 10 minutes of the second term, while intercept defenders Dylan Grimes and Nick Vlastuin were kept manned up and busy to stifle the usual rebound from the back half.
A team that had not kicked 10 goals in its previous four matches finished with 15 majors, all while keeping Richmond to 52 points — its lowest score since Round 23, 2016.

Gap between our best and worst footy is a problem-a massive problem.

Few things.
Rance out is big but we missed Astbury big time last night. Many can him but he does the job on big forwards each week and a lot of what he does goes unnoticed until he is not there.
Not replacing a tall was a big mistake made at selection. The dog's went in confident they could take us in the air up forward and guesss what, they did.
Tom Lynch is not Jack and the preasure plan doesn't work as well with him as the only tall. That's not being critical of him as the delivery to him has be horrible. It just that he is not the extra preasure player that Jack brings to the forward line
There were a lot of players down last night but there are a few that have been down all year. Thing is that we are running with a very young team due to injuries and those underperforming are probably getting picked just because of thier experience.Match committee are probably not wanting to field many more youngsters which I agree with. Without the injuries I would hope that these underperformers would get dropped and some of them never to be seen again .
We have got some great young talent comming through. Love the way they are going but we are probably running to many at once. Results like last night will happen with so many young players but it wasn't them that let the team down.

I thought Nank worked tirelessly all night, loved the chase and crunching tackle.

Correct. Our 3 losses have been 44, 49, 47 points ...
That’s an issue!
Lowest score since Round 23, 2016?

Work rate is not the issue
Had a chance last night to impose himself on a game and for the most part got out worked by a kid, who has great potential but is still learning the game

Umpires toweled us again - happens every week, sometimes even worse in matches we win. - minor issue. :shh
Killed in the air. Bigger issues :shh
Footscray's elite "handpassing" game was back - just replace the Wallabies with them and Australia might actually be a shot of winning the Rugby World Cup this year. :shh
Smashed in the clearances, centre bounces were embarrassing. Major Issue. :shh
Abysmal forward entries - no change there but burnt more than usual when coupled with zero forward defensive pressure. Constant issue. :shh
Shocking work rate and defensive efforts- one way cheat running, barely a shepherd or block all match, pathetic tackling , drawn to the ball carrier - looked like pre- Caracella Richmond , add the comical skill errors and it was Frwaleyesque Npo excuse after a ten day break. Got ahead of ourselves - perhaps not a "glamourous" enough fixture for us to get up for.... Usual suspects badly exposed yet again. Biggest issue. :shh
-
You forgot to mention B Ellis (major problem) :rollin :shh
-
Get Houli up to the wing because he can't defend one on one.

Who do you think I meant by "usual suspects"? :shh

I thought you meant Grimes because he’s soft :rollin

Delivery to the forwards has also been poor for years.

Can anyone explain why every time we play these stuffers we let the little dwarf in the helmet just run around unchecked and doing as he pleases? At least Stack finally did something about it near the end..... :shh
-
It was painful to watch dioc. Even ploughman or one of those Carlton duds could manage to curtail him but not our forwards. Castagna was pathetic and is only in the team on the back of a GF medal.

Agree, he was excellent with his passes and decision making, one of their go to players.
Our shepherding was woeful.
-
Is it just me or do we just forget how to play footy at marvel stadium? It was shocking to see the lack of skills on display against the dogs but it hasn’t been that long ago that we got torched by the saints and kangaroos there also

Gowers only got a fine for his headbutt on Grimes. It was classed a "misconduct" by the MRO.
