Match preview: North Melbourne v Richmond

May 28, 2019 7:19PM
The Tigers have had the better of the Kangaroos the past three times the teams have played at Marvel Stadium.
Where and when: Marvel Stadium, Friday May 31, 7.50pm AEST
Last time they met: Marvel Stadium, round 8, 2018: North Melbourne 11.6 (72) lost to Richmond 12.10 (82)
Ben Cunnington's AFL-record 32 contested possessions almost inspired the Roos to an unlikely victory over the Tigers. Richmond led by 26 points nearing half-time, but an upset was on the cards when North Melbourne hit the lead barely two minutes into the final term. Trent Cotchin was brilliant for the winners, amassing 37 touches in the midfield.
What it means for North Melbourne: The Kangaroos' first match of the post-Brad Scott era has the potential to be a letdown after the emotional events of the past week. However, they will be keen to give caretaker coach Rhyce Shaw a winning start and put the drama behind them.
What it means for Richmond: It might not even be the halfway point of the season, but there is a competitive race going for a top-four spot and the Tigers will be keen to bank another win, knowing how valuable they will be down the track.
How North Melbourne wins: Winning the ruck battle is a non-negotiable, with Todd Goldstein – fresh from almost 60 hitouts a week ago – holding a significant experience edge over Ivan Soldo. Giving his foot soldiers the first look at the Sherrin is the first link in the midfield chain.
How Richmond wins: Barring the round seven loss to the Western Bulldogs, the Tigers have been exemplary in defying a lengthy injury list with major names on it. The success to date has depended on contributions from lesser lights, and more of the same is required.
The stat: Richmond has won its past two encounters with the Roos after losing seven of the previous eight clashes.
The match-up: Robbie Tarrant v Tom Lynch
The Tigers say power forward Lynch (No.271 in the AFL Player Ratings) will be fit to face North Melbourne despite his corked calf, but he won't have an easy time of it against Tarrant (No.239). Tarrant, at his best, has the ability to hurt the former Sun the other way, too, if Lynch's movement is hampered whatsoever.
It's a big week for: Rhyce Shaw
Who else? This section is normally reserved for players, but Shaw is in the spotlight this week as his senior coaching career, albeit as a caretaker, makes a sooner-than-expected start. The dual AFL Coaches' Association Assistant of the Year has aspirations to officially win a senior coach job at some stage and his audition begins now.
Big call: Sydney Stack does something, anything – a high mark, brutal hip and shoulder or spectacular goal, for instance – to have us all raving about his football story.
Prediction: Tigers by 24 points

Danger game
-
Wonder how many changes the Roos will make for this game and whether they go younger?
-
A lot of players might be playing for their career to not get sent into the skip heap or banished to the 2s for when they get a new coach so I expect them to come out firing
8 point game!!!!
-
Here we go - North's grand final before they start going the tank.
Wasn’t their GF last week?
-
NO LATE CHANGES
FINAL INTERCHANGES
North Melbourne: Luke Davies-Uniacke, Luke McDonald, Kayne Turner, Cam Zurhaar
Richmond: Josh Caddy, Shai Bolton, Sydney Stack, Liam Baker

Danger game
Not just because it's North with a new coach but because we're coming off a tough game in the wet off a six day break. Hopefully, we've had a light week to recover and freshen up physically.
They mentioned on Ch 7 that 10 of the last 11 teams that have changed their coaches have won the following week. The difference here is the Brad Scott announced his resignation just before their last game so Norf would've been pumped up last week in which they beat the Doggies.
Going to be interesting how both sides come into this match mentally. Hopefully, we're on from the start to dent their confidence early. Norf are 3-7 and in the bottom 5 for a reason. We need to bring our pressure game and punish them on the scoreboard.
-
Kmac long and Lynch is pushed in the back. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 1.0-6
NM 0.0-0
-
First game in Melb in 2 years :'(
-
Grrr! Mistackles :scream.
6 - 6
Houli hurt.
-
Why are their idiot supporters booing Dusty?
-
Bachar sporting a beaut shinner
-
Why are their idiot supporters booing Dusty?
Cos... he is playing for Richmond and didn't go to them :rollin
-
That's why Balta is dangerous. Too athletic. Nice kick by Lynch to him.
Poor kick though. Hit the behind post.
-
Dusty GOAL
-
Our forward entries have been ordinary.
That's holding the ball, Razor Ray ::).
Doesn't matter. Dusty bends a brilliant goal :gotigers
Rich 2.0-12
NM 1.1-7
-
Karma eh Razor :lol
-
Terrible turnover by Cotchin
That should have been a free to Grimes
-
Our F50 entries are shambolic
-
Why are their idiot supporters booing Dusty?
Cos... he is playing for Richmond and didn't go to them :rollin
Not even a cardboard cutout would play for n0rf :shh
-
Why are their idiot supporters booing Dusty?
Cos... he is playing for Richmond and didn't go to them :rollin
Not even a cardboard cutout would play for n0rf :shh
What?
Haven't you noticed Pittard is out there :rollin
-
Why are we so poo at Etihad stadium??
-
First option, Dan.
Soft free to Ben Brown gifts them a goal ::).
We're doing some dumb stuff so far :scream.
12 - 19
-
Great centering kick by Lynch under pressure. Butler marks then gets 50 :lol.
Rich 3.0-18
NM 3.1-19
-
Nought seem more interested in the fights than the game
-
Stack sweeps. Good transition between Cotch, Kmac and Houli. Finds Bolts 55 out. Goes to the square and it's a point.
19 all.
-
Footsteps Pittard :yep.
-
Thst attempted "tap" by Higgins is an example of why I've been critical of him
That was a really poor decision
-
You're an idiot, Razor ::).
-
Soldo has to mark those
-
Shocking by Houli terrible turnover
-
Take Houli off, friggin hell
-
:facepalm.
Houli that's your second poor too high pass. Stack's fault too waiting for the ball. Costs us a goal :scream.
-
Lynch beats 4 to allow us to go inside 50 via George.
Dusty gathers but misses the snap.
Quarter time
Richmond 3.2-20
North Melb. 4.1-25
Goals: Lynch, Martin, Butler.
-
1/4 time
Tigers 3.2.20
N0rt 4.1.25
Poor quartet.
We looked flat, FWD50 entries shambolic and Houli gifted then that last goal
-
Our F50 entries are shambolic
Honestly I would prefer they just kick the ball along the ground inside 50, has to be better than just continually giving them easy possessions
-
Cunnington a protected species.
Been caught HTB twice and nothing and keeps his head down for too long after picking up the footy and it’s too high. FO!
We seriously get f$&ked by the umpires.
-
Too many dumb brainfades and mistackles so far. Need to tidy up the basics.
When we've had the ball from a mark there's not much movement up ahead.
Inside 50s have all been bombs and not to our forwards advantage. Need to lower our eyes.
-
Lucky it was Mason Wood having the shot.
20 - 26
-
We don't get a free in our F50. Dangerous tackle on Higgo not paid ::).
-
Ummm Higgo when it's a footrace for the loose ball let Bolts take the footy.
Baker gets the HTB free against Thompson. 45 out misses.
21 - 27
-
The number of mistackles tonight has been really poor :banghead.
Why don't you kick it for them Ray ::).
21 - 33
-
Houli tackles with his fingertips.
-
Anyone seen Beliis?
Game a little hot for him.
He might show up when we are 5 goals in front.
-
We finally get a soft free :lol
-
Take that. Downfield free after Bakes' kick. Butler on a tight angle. Goal! :gotigers
Understatement to say we needed that.
Rich 4.3-27
NM 5.4-34
-
That was terrible by Astbury = clueless
-
Another mistackle and then another easy mark to a North forward :banghead.
Lucky they missed.
27 - 35
-
We've got quite a few MIA
But at least we have Sydney Stack ;D
-
:banghead
A BEllis moment right there
Pulled out of a contest
-
Norf fans don't know the new rule. You're allowed to push to hold your ground.
Dusty goal :gotigers.
Rich 5.3-33
NM 5.5-35
-
Terrible turnover by N0rt
Kam to Dusty
Goal
-
Dusty is back! :gotigers
Top clearance by Cotch.
We're in front! :o
Rich 6.3-39
NM 5.5-35
-
DUSTY
-
Why isn't that 50 against Brown?
-
Cunnington a protected species.
Been caught HTB twice and nothing and keeps his head down for too long after picking up the footy and it’s too high. FO!
We seriously get stuffed by the umpires.
Make it 3 times caught HTB not paid.
-
Grrrr! Giving a goal away in the last 30 secs :banghead.
-
Pathetic last 2 minutes, were always giving up a goal there.
-
Yet again we give N0rt multiple entries into there F50 in the last minute
So disappointing
-
Half-time
Richmond 3.2 6.3-39
North Melb. 4.1 6.7-43
Goals: Martin 3, Butler 2, Lynch.
-
Houli 22 disposals...
Where is the stat for missed tackles?
He is not a defenders areshole!
-
In a way we're lucky to be so close. Save for 6 or 7 minutes in that qtr, we got out played
-
Houli 22 disposals...
Where is the stat for missed tackles?
He is not a defenders areshole!
I know the commentators are raving about 22 disposals
But not great quality in those numbers
-
If last quarters have been our Achilles heel then we better play a damn good third quarter or we will get rolled.
The last goal was Soldo's inexperience, should have tapped towards the boundary given there was 30 seconds to go, he is getting taps but has to get more to advantage.
-
I just wish frees were as easy to get as they are to give away .... horribly inconsistent umpires, as usual ... :-\
-
Soldo hasn't had one possession. 18 hitouts though.
Balta has had 6 disposals for 6 clangers :P.
Small forwards Butler, Bolton and Higgo have only had 3 disposals each and 2 tackles between them.
Too many passengers in that first half.
North a man down for the second half with MacMillan doing a calf.
Positives in that first half:
The Tigers have outscored the Roos by 10 points from centre clearances.
We're still close on the scoreboard despite playing crap.
Negatives:
Losing the contested ball 69 - 84.
We've scored just one goal from a forward-half intercept.
North scored 8 times from 11 entries in that 2nd qtr (lucky they were inaccurate).
The Roos' entire score has come from centre clearances and forward half chains. They have generated just two inside 50s from 33 defensive half chains.
The Kangas lead the clearance count 11-10 this quarter and they have recorded five scores to one from this source.
https://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2019/11/nmfc-v-rich
-
Our pack positioning is awful. We are all one side and the ball s going to the other side too often.
-
How many times have we mistackled tonight :banghead.
-
That was pathetic against Higgins
4 count em 4 ,missed tackles
:banghead
-
Again we can't nail the tackle after 3 goes :banghead.
39 - 49
-
Some blokes look totally disinterested
-
Great by Cotch
-
We don’t look on at all.
No pressure. No tackling. Shed just limpwristed last contest no pressure applied.
If Polec is snapping goals that tells you we are way off our game.
This will be the bulldogs all over again.
-
It's simple footy at the moment. We're getting less numbers to the contest which is why we are losing them. When we do get the ball we cough it up. It's simply a lack of workrate.
-
Another nothing kick by Houli
-
Imagine the hate if Ellis or Castagna served up some of the efforts and disposals of BACHAR.....:lol
-
Another bomb inside 50. Thankfully George takes a ripped of a mark over the pack. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 7.3-45
NM 7.7-49
-
Imagine the hate if Ellis or Castagna served up some of the efforts and disposals of BACHAR.....:lol
They do and they cop it
-
We gift them another one :banghead
-
Imagine the hate if Ellis or Castagna served up some of the efforts and disposals of BACHAR.....:lol
They do and they cop it
I haven't seen either of them turn it over as many times as Houli has done tonight, or poo their pants as often as Houli has done tonight
BOG last week my arse.
-
I’m calling it. We’re done.
-
Another goal to them from a turnover coming out of our defence.
Slack defending too.
45 - 55
-
I’m calling it. We’re done.
You beat me to it
Been shocking
Too many MIA
-
Can anyone tell me who Houli is playing on?
Supposed to be playing on??
-
Can anyone tell me who Houli is playing on?
Supposed to be playing on??
Himself :-\
-
How does a North player end up on their own 15m out directly in front?
45 - 61
We're playing as though last week's game in the wet has taken its toll. The workrate tonight is so poor.
-
North player dived for that after Cotch let go ::).
-
Hey Broad, you don't need to bounce it after 2 steps
-
Handpass misses it target then Broad has no awareness.
Then Cotch gives another free away.
45 - 67
Talk about making every mistake in the book tonight :facepalm.
-
If you're held after disposal that's 50 Razor. Know the rules Ray ::)
-
Lynch misses from 55.
46 - 67
-
higgins bolton butler lynch 3 POSSESIONS each...are u F##CKEN KIDDING???????????
-
4 Roos vs 2 Tigers at that HF contest then 3 Roos vs Soldo 25m out from their goal ::).
Tonight has been pathetic and it's all due to our lack of workrate.
-
Game over. See you next week.
Our performances at Etihad are a disgrace.
How many tackles have they broken tonight
Weak as pee
-
Every contest we are outnumbered. Even that pass had 2 Roos waiting for that ball to spill from a 1-v-1 contest.
-
Not switched on full stop workrate is poor and to many misses.
-
Shut up Bruce
-
Besides Baker, Soldo has laid more tackles than the rest of our forwards combined. :banghead
-
Game over.
It's the doggies game all over again. We haven't turned up to play.
-
This will be worse than the bulldogs game. I think they’ve thought Cotchin was gonna come out and do all the work for them.
-
Embarrassing physical performance. Just outmuscled.
-
Dusty to Caddy just before the siren.
OOTF! Sums us up tonight :P.
3/4 time
Richmond 3.2 6.3 7.4-46
North Melb. 4.1 6.7 12.7-79
Goals: Martin 3, Butler 2, Lynch, Castagna.
Pathetic!
-
"BACHAR SAVES THE DAY"
stuff off BT. He mopped up Vlastuins goal saving bump
-
7 players with 5 or less disposals....
:lol
-
Embarrassing physical performance. Just outmuscled.
Hardly any Tigers wanted to do the hard work tonight. Just slack.
-
Hey Broad, you don't need to bounce it after 2 steps
Fair call but that’s not a free kick.
He bounced the ball before he was tackled, the ball just didn’t bounce back up.
BS!
-
I hate this ground too. We just don’t play well here it brings out our worst.
-

BS!
True
-
I hate this ground too. We just don’t play well here it brings out our worst.
I go every week to hamesin Melbourne but tonight I decided that ground can FRO.
-
3 things I hate:
Losing Friday night footy. Weekend over
Etihad stadium
North Melbourne
-
Cameron Zurhaar has applied five tackles this quarter, the equal of all 22 Tigers.
North has laid 14 more tackles for the term with Richmond recording a tackle efficiency of just 22 per cent.
https://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2019/11/nmfc-v-rich
Contested footy: 98 - 119 ...... that's a smashing.
Less ball and less tackles.
Just slack tonight.
-
Sums up our night. We go forward, can't score and it comes out again.
Another goal to them from a turnover. Balta like many of his teammates having a night to forget.
-
Why does that tosser have to run in from half back when he's 20 metres out?
-
Dusty trying to lift. Finds Baker in the pocket. Sprays it.
47 - 85
-
With Rance out you think Astbury would get Ben Brown but let’s play a kid on him all night.
As he lines up for number 5
-
Another turnover coming out of defence, another mistackle and another goal to North.
Rinse and repeat :banghead.
-
Can we hire the Super coach Rhys Shaw. First game coach has smashed Dimma tonight
-
Prestia has been pretty poor tonight. Higgins has been rubbish. Our defence has been pretty poor but our midfield pressure has been non existent.
Edwards has had his worse game in three years.
Macintosh has been very poor.
Dusty and Cotchin have played ok.
Broad terrible again, has has played only 1 good game all year this is one of his worst.
-
Pathetic tonight. But just wanted to ask . Is there a bigger Thug in the AFL than Turner?
-
Did we come into the game trying to hit the roof with every kick forward tonight? Up and unders on a teammate's head everytime :banghead.
I can see Dimma using last week's wet slog as an excuse.
-
Pathetic tonight. But just wanted to ask . Is there a bigger Thug in the AFL than Turner?
Norf are full of snipers.
-
Bloody embarrassing now
-
Had to get Astbury to kick a goal for us.
Rich 8.6-54
NM 15.9-99
-
Tackling practice coming up this week.
-
Tackling practice coming up this week.
Everything practice this week.
-
Slack hits up Lynch. Kick from 50. High and falls short.
No Tiger on the line so the Norf defender marks uncontested :facepalm.
Sums up our slackness tonight.
-
Like all our losses this season it's the loss of percentage that's the real killer
-
Forward 50 entries still a major concern.
Lynch needs to attack the contest. When I see him at the back of a pack and he’s just half heartedly putting his hands up I reckon he really should be spoken too. Deserves all the criticism he gets. He’s no better than Tex Walker.
He needs to smash the packs. He needs to use his bulk and leap into the defenders with his knees.
Absolutely terrible performance from our million dollar forward. :banghead
-
Junk time.
Goal to Prestia on the run from 40.
Rich 9.6-60
NM 15.9-99
-
Why do Cunnington, Ziebell turn into the best players of all time against Richmond
-
Dusty has been good today but I must say it annoys me when he plays forward and just points in front of himself and doesn’t lead into space even when there’s a heap of space to run into.
Granted if our entries were better his teammates could force him to run into space with a nice kick to the fat side.
-
George miss from 40.
61 - 99
Floss surely isn't going to be referred to the MRO for that. Thompson fell down.
-
Siren please
I'm crook enough tonight put me out of misery
-
Final Score
Richmond 3.2 6.3 7.4 9.7-61
North Melb. 4.1 6.7 12.7 15.9-99
Goals: Martin 3, Butler 2, Lynch, Castagna, Astbury, Prestia.
Play lazily and pathetically like tonight against the Cats next week and it'll be 10+ goal hiding :help.
-
Thank god that's over. Plenty of soul searching through the week with the lack of physical presence tonight.
Expect a response against the Cats but we won't be winning that based on tonight's performance
-
So very disappointing
So many MIA
But here's a positive... no "Roaming Brian" :-\
-
I feel like Bill Shorten.
That was putrid. Worst game I've seen senior players play namely Cotch.
I'm not buying Houlis 35 possys either.
We were rubbish it's that simple
-
From 10 minutes into the third term until the 12-minute mark of the fourth quarter, the Roos went inside 50 16 times to eight and outscored the Tigers 8.2 (50) to 0.3 (3). :help
The Kangas have scored 27 more points from clearances. They were outscored by 112 points from this source in the first 10 rounds, ranked 18th and 16 points worse than any other team.
https://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2019/11/nmfc-v-rich
-
I can’t think of a decent player tonight , maybe Baker and Stack?
-
I can’t think of a decent player tonight , maybe Baker and Stack?
Stack and then no one
-
No one in terms of a 4 quarter effort. We were beaten all over the park especially after half-time.
-
Embarrassing performance by many. Tall forwards continue to dominate us and will continue to do so. Astbury can't play on the big forwards anymore as he hasn't got a leap. Gathwaite...sorry but :help.
When the going gets tough the same guys go missing.
Gee Higgins is way out of form and should see some VFL action along with a few others.
-
Soldo and Garthwaite VFL standard unfortunately.
Play CCJ and don’t waste games on Soldo.
Butler a one truck pony.
Rioli injured and out of form is a better option.
Houli 26 kicks, 36 missed tackles
Bellis is Bellis 💩
The only way we can compete against the good sides is to get rid of the downhill skiers.

In all fairness to Garthwaite. Brown got some goals from soft free kicks.
-
It's going to happen with young sides from time to time, unfortunately we have to come to terms with peaks and troughs of performance. The telling point now is how a young side bounces back against the Cats. If we get a flogging then Adelaide in Adelaide could be a nightmare we could be potentially heading into the bye on the back of three consecutive losses.

Gathwaite is not big enough for a key post. Tries his all but is very limited at this level... unfortunately.
-
If Butler, Rioli, and others can be dropped it's time for Dimma to do the same with Higgins.
He's been poor for weeks now,
-
Terrible.
We are in big trouble peoples.
-
Outs:
Broad (worst game and has played maybe 1 passable game all year)
Higgins (second year blues? Too much dinky business and no penetration - 0 disposals 3rd qtr)
Lynch (such a useless waste of money and talent when he refuses to play properly, very lazy game)
-
Believe it not, we actually had more inside 50s. So we had just 16 scoring shots from 49 entries :scream.
Team Stats:
Disposals: 326 - 356 ( contested: 131 - 153 )

Garthwaite is not going to make it BT
Slow one trick pony. Playing him and Astbury in the backline against a big forward will end up a loss more times than not
-
Thought Grimes had one of his poorer games tonight, the backline just appeared to lack any cohesion.
-
Could see this result coming a mile off...all the ingredients were there , the ground, the "grand final" opponent, the new coach, the way they played last week, the way we finished last week in heavy conditions... :shh
-
...but really, if you want to boil it right down to just one thing- crap tackling was the main reason we lost.....it invariably is when we lose...all our other notable deficiencies were there but we usually get away with them and still win when we tackle well... :shh :shh
-
No one in terms of a 4 quarter effort. We were beaten all over the park especially after half-time.
I am sick to death of this mob setting themselves for us every stinking year. Like, for God’s sake, why don’t we understand?!?!?!
We are their GF. It’s pathetic and sycophantic; but can we just stuffing work and put some effort in for once?
Pathetic Tigers.....
-
Are people really surprised we dropped a game ? Look at our team for Geez sake.
our 3 most valuable players aren't playing and yet we've still managed to win games.
we are going to have inconsistencies with such a young team its just inevitable. I for won am extremely pleased with how well
this team has played this year.
Obviously not happy with the effort last night, or against the dogs, but i think all the positives heavily outweigh the negatives of those games.
-
Garthwaite and Soldo arent up to it. Astbury is shot and Butler lost me last night. Had a chance and blew it
We were crap last night but as people said we are Norfs GF also missing key players and even Mick McGuanes article yesterday. Everything was heading towards what happened.
-
Terrible.
We are in big trouble peoples.
Well look who's turned up again after a loss....... :thumbsdown

our 3 most valuable players aren't playing and yet we've still managed to win games.
we are going to have inconsistencies with such a young team its just inevitable. I for won am extremely pleased with how well
this team has played this year.
Obviously not happy with the effort last night, or against the dogs, but i think all the positives heavily outweigh the negatives of those games.
not sure everyone would be upset if it we lost against descent opposition, but those pathetic spuds come on Sim.
Its more that we produced that effort against a bunch of gypsys and we let spuds play like superstars

very annoying indeed. but hypothetically would i prefer we play poo against north but win against port and freo on the road ? yep.

“Took the foot off the pedal”:
Dermott Brereton, Terry Wallace dissect Richmond’s shock loss
By SEN
1 June 2019
Richmond’s inability to have every base covered was exposed by North Melbourne in their shock 37-point loss on Friday night, according to Hawthorn great Dermott Brereton.
The Kangaroos led at every change to run out convincing winners, with Ben Brown and Mason Wood booting nine goals between them against a hapless Tigers defence at Marvel Stadium.
“I think there’s a bit of the threadbare aspect,” Brereton told SEN’s Crunch Time.
“When you see them walk out on to the ground and they walk to their positions, before the first bounce you look at them sometimes and you go: ‘That’s going to be tough’.
“Just at the start of the game you thought: ‘They haven’t got every base covered, Richmond … good teams will be able to exploit this.’”
AFL Hall of Famer Terry Wallace believes certain Richmond players might been a touch complement after their recent run of good form.
“They had won five out of six, you get a few back and all of a sudden you pick up the papers and people are writing articles that we can become premiers again,” Wallace said.
“I just think that they might have had a couple that just took the foot off the pedal marginally. It’s never intentional, but it’s just one of those things that can happen at times.”

Tigers “not up for the fight”
AFL Nation commentator and former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon slammed Richmond for their performance in the second half.
“North Melbourne have made Richmond look like a very ordinary side tonight, and that is really hard to do,” he said.
“They haven’t been up for the fight and they haven’t been up for the aggressive game style that North has demanded of them.
“They’re a shambles the Tigers and it’s all due to the fact that the Roos have brought intent, intensity, willingness to work both ways and it’s too hard for Richmond right now. They’re not that interested.”

Gary Lyon, Mr anti Richmond, his commentating on Richmond games is so biased it is disgraceful.

But re the 2nd half we weren't up for the fight. We showed no fight and that's the disappointing thing

Yep. Lyon was right.
-
Yep. Gary was spot on. They wanted it more. We were second to the ball all night.

It may be that we are just going to throw in a rubbish performance every 3-4 weeks given how many young inexperienced players we have playing atm. Gee it’s frustrating though, nowhere near competitive in any of our 4 losses this season.
Roos wanted it more and out tackling was off by a mile - don’t get me started on that play where Higgins literally shrugged 4 tackles in a standing position then fished off a handball for a goal :banghead

DAMIEN Hardwick's suspicion was right.
North Melbourne had tweaked its ball movement in Brad Scott's final fortnight as coach, but the process went into overdrive under caretaker coach Rhyce Shaw on Friday night.
Shaw's Roos kicked long 45.7 per cent of the time (ranked third for round 11), climbing to 52.4 in set situations (second), compared to 37.1 (13th) and 39.7 (15th), respectively, across the first 10 rounds.
That percentage of kicks going long spiked from 33.7 per cent in round eight, to 39.3 a week later, then 40.4 in round 10, so there was a gradual shift.
"I really noticed a difference tonight – there's no doubt," Hardwick said after the Tigers' shock 37-point defeat to North.
"But they did go more long down the line last week (against the Western Bulldogs). (It's a) very small sample size, so we'll see how it pans out."
That we will, although the way North moved the Sherrin contrasted with how other teams have approached facing Richmond this season.
Opposition sides tend to flip the ball around when they take on the Tigers, who concede a competition-most 253 contested possessions per game.
However, the Roos – the AFL's No.1 handball team in the first 10 rounds – went the other way, having their fewest uncontested possessions for the season (212).

I watched the replay last night and looking at Bachar closely he doesn’t play on anyone.
At a stoppage he doesn’t even stand beside anyone. It is no wonder Norf scored 99 points against us.
With Rance out that usually covered a few forwards, Houli needs to defend first before trying to get a kick. That is Little League stuff.

Thought Dusty was more deserving of a vote than Houli...

But Tone, Houli is our 'get out' man! We use him to get the ball out of our back half & hopefully into the hands of a player further up-field. Having Houli stand next to any opposition at a stoppage sees him effectively tagging himself! We want him in space so he can deliver, so he stands away from the opposition. Also, I doubt that Houli is choosing to play loose as a choice/preference/too scared etc, maybe he is following instructions & trying to play the way he has been told to - aka - playing his role. Whether that is an effective tactic or not is fodder for the next discussion. Maybe we could use other options as that get out man instead of Houli ... Stack? Ellis? Edwards?

Stuff for Martin. He was one of the few players that kept us in it with his electric goal scoring
