Those playing in the ressies should and better turn up tomorrow given it will be their best chance of getting a  promotion next week after what the seniors dished up tonight.

Chol takes a good defensive mark in the hole but then his kick out of defence is poor (too short) and intercepted. North miss the set shot.

RCD intercepts on the wing. In board to Fraser who goes to HFF where Graham gets the free. His kick inside 50 is cleared by North.

The start is a bit like the seniors last night  :P.

Good forward pressure causes the turnover. Fraser finds Coates 40 out. His shot falls short though and is marked on the line by North.

We get it back via another North turnover. Towner spots up Mannagh 35 out. Just gets in. Goal!  :gotigers

Out of the centre and a pack mark and goal to North (replay of last night). That high long kick should have been spoiled at least.

Eggy cut off North's forward kick but then hesitates and runs off his line not knowing where to go. Puts himself under pressure and coughs it up. Gifts North a goal.

Good hard ball won by RCD on the wing to Weller to Grewar who goes to the pocket. Throw-in. We force the turnover but RCD pass is short and North clear.

They run it down the other end for another goal.

6 - 20

This is an exact replay of last night. Losing the stoppages and woeful forward entries.

Naish bursts out of the middle but Ballard drops a sitter on the lead. North clear.

We get it back. Graham's centering kick goes off the pack. Two Tigers wait for each other and then Mannagh's tackle is ordinary and North clear.

We get it back again but Towner's kick inside 50 is poor straight to a North defender. North clear again.

Eggy in defence off to Naish. Nice pass to Graham on the wing. We're out and Chol is all by himself up forward but the siren goes before he can mark.

Quarter time

Richmond   2.1-13
North Melb. 3.2-20

Goals: Ballard, Mannagh.

Chol runs up and down the ground and looks absolutely stuffed after only 1 halfhearted effort.

Doesn’t look fit or is very lazy.

When up forward Chol efforts are Lynch like in its lethargy.

First 20 mins was a replay of last night. Beaten around the contest, in the air and when we did go forward we butchered our forward entries. Last 5 mins was better around the contests and our forward pressure was good but still we stuffed up our inside F50 kicks or in Ballard's case dropped marks.

Inside 50s: 16 - 8 .... so that's 3 scoring shots from our 16 entries to North's 5 from 8  ::).

Similar disposal and tackle stats.
North's Campbell dominating the hitouts against CCJ and Chol.

Leading ballgetters:
Graham 10
Weller 10

Naish would've been our most effective with his possies.

RCD off with a knock to the calf but they think he'll be okay.

We rebound off half-back. Naish bounces and runs to HF where he gives off to Rioli. Rioli stops and try turns back and it's a loose ball. Naish picks it up and clever awareness kicks it out to Silvestro all by himself 35 out. Goal!  :gotigers

Grewar out of the middle and high inside 50 but North defender in front marks it.

We get it back at HB. Switch play ends up with Menadue who runs to HF and goes long. North players moving at the fall of the ball while we're flat-footed. North clear.

Terrible from the throw-in on the wing. Silvestro easily pushed off the ball allowing North to go forward. Then our defenders were 15m off the North forwards. Easily goal for them.

For those not watching. This is the 2nd qtr:

Tigers win centre clearance after a North goal, bomb it long, North mark and clear.
If we can get it back, North flood back and wait to pick off our long aimless bombs inside 50.
Repeat until North can pressure us into mistakes, hit us on counter and goal.

Chol is making Soldo look like he’s safe that’s how bad he’s playing. Maybe now the young north ruckman is likely injured may give Chol a reason to compete.

North should be in front by 10 goals that’s how bad we are playing.

Eggs is playing well despite some mistakes in delivery. His marking is a highlight.
Menadue is going ok and Graham is our best player.

Ballard up forward is our only lead up forward.
Haven’t noticed Rioli at all. In fact, except for maybe the last 2 minutes of that 2nd quarter our forward pressure is non existent.

Townsend has been ok but his delivery into forward 50 is a real concern same goes for Weller.
Naish I haven’t noticed.

Post by: one-eyed on June 01, 2019, 03:32:32 PM
North's ruckman Campbell is BOG for them. Chol has been poor after his best game last week while CCJ has been unsighted. Like last night, North are winning the game in the air and are tougher and cleaner at ground level. We always fall for their counterattack gameplan.

Graham is about the only putting his hand up for a promotion. Naish was effective with his run and kicking in the first quarter but like most of his teammates went totally out of the game in the second.

Not sure why Ballard is playing up forward when he's meant to be a inside midfield bull and in a game we're getting hurt around the ball.

Well we've come out after half-time with better intensity.

We surge the ball forward from the restart and Patrick Naish forces the turnover as North looks to exit D50. Goal!

We get it forward again and Towner now with the shot. But his misses.

CCJ collects the ball from the centre bounce ruck and kicks it forward. Rioli's pressure forces it to the pocket for a throw-in. We share by hand but Mannagh's shot from the pocket is smothered for another throw-in. North clear.

We get it back via Townsend. He passes it to Menadue at HF who runs to the 50 but his ping misses.

North go coast to coast for a goal.

A poor back pass by North allows us in but Towner shanks the shot.

We get it back via Fletcher who finds Nelson 30 out directly in front. Goal!

Eggy good play. Passes to Coffield then runs on and finds Silvestro on the wing. Goes to HF where Ballard marks on 50. Off to Naish but his kick falls short and is rushed.

We get it back but Mannagh misses too.

Dumb footy in defence again. Needlessly handball ourselves into trouble and the HTB free gifts North a set shot. They of course don't miss today unlike us.

We had more inside 50s and more scoring shots yet that flatters us as we got flogged today.
As bad as last night.

For mine, Graham was our best. Apparently spent some time on the bench in the last. Not sure if he was rested to freshen him up if he is to promoted as he did go off after that collision. However, he did come back later on.
Naish was very good in patches. More from the 1st qtr and the first half of 3rd.
Eggy was much improved in the second half after a poor first where he cost us two goals.
Towner and Weller had their usual games at this level.
Menadue would pop up well in patches with his line breaks when we could generate some transition. But they were few and far between as a team from our usual.

The rest had ordinary games.
Rioli is out of form and showed why he is back in the ressies. Did nothing up forward. Only got his hands on the footy late when he moved on ball. No impact on the game though.
RCD and Turner were very quiet. Their poorest so far this year but they are first year players so you give them some slack, especially Turner who had a good year in the VFL up until today.
Our talls Chol, CCJ & Miller had forgettable games. Chol the worst culprit as he should be more experienced by now. As good as he was last week he was as poor today. Soft and lazy for such a big body. Didn't use his leap and was not only easily pushed aside by North's ruckman Campbell at ruck stoppages but failed to use his body in loose balls against opposition mids. His second efforts were also non-existent. It's games like today that will get him delisted.

Went along today and the game was much the same as last night. They won the air and contested ball.

Graham was good as was Naish and Menadue. Weller battled throughout as did Townsend. Our Talls were horrid and timid. Rioli is still very sore and looks to be protecting his body when contesting. Should rest for a few weeks is my call.

Talked to Pickett for a while today, nice guy who is adjusting to the cold but can't wait to show what he has to offer. Nice size about him also :clapping

Forgot to mention Egg was good again.
I agree, thought Egg was trying his guts out and trying to be creative out of half back. His disposal could do with some work but so could all his teammates.

I thought CCJ offered much more than Chol today.
Chol was really hopeless from what I saw, wasn’t even trying and was alot like Lynch last night as he offered nothing. When in the Ruck he didn’t even leap at all which was most disappointing.

At least CCJ was trying, leaping and crashing the packs running and chasing which is nothing that Chol was doing today.

VFL Tigers fall to rampant Roos

Brenton Mann
AFL media
Jun 2, 2019

Richmond VFL has suffered its first loss of 2019, falling to North Melbourne by 29 points at Arden Street on Saturday afternoon.

The Roos were slick and efficient up forward, prevailing 17.7 (109) to 11.14 (80).

North Melbourne hosted a home game at Arden Street for the first time since 1985 and Richmond was keen to secure the four points up for grabs.

But the hosts looked sharp in the opening term, moving the ball with fluency from their defensive half and using the ball through the corridor with precision.

Tiger Shaun Mannagh slotted the opening goal, after Derek Eggmolesse-Smith showed urgency and spring as he rose high to pluck a forward-half turnover.

Eggmolesse-Smith pierced the ball into the corridor to find Jacob Townsend, and the final link in the chain was Mannagh, sticking a handy mark on the lead as the crafty forward nailed his set-shot.

North then enjoyed a patch of dominance, slamming through three goals on the trot, skating to a 14-point lead. The Roos’ key backs, led by Sam Durdin, patrolled the air when the Tigers kicked the ball long and deep.

Jacob Ballard looked sharp on the lead inside 50 and kicked a goal to peg back the deficit, after Jack Graham surged from a centre clearance and delivered the ball onto Ballard’s chest.

The margin was seven points at quarter time in favour of North Melbourne.

Mav Weller and Graham provided grunt and pressure through the midfield, and Eggmolesse-Smith and Connor Menadue added some dash and flair off half-back.

The Roos clicked into gear in the second quarter and controlled the ball by foot, recording 50 uncontested marks for the half.

The Tigers struggled to exert their trademark pressure, allowing the Roos access to its attacking 50.

North Melbourne also took its chances in front of goal when they presented.

Gut runner Tom Silvestro provided a spark up forward in the second term, slotting the Tigers only two majors for the term to keep his side in the hunt.

The Roos held a 20-point lead at half-time.

Richmond needed a lift; an injection of energy and Patrick Naish provided the impetus for the game swinging back the way of the Tigers.

The ladder-leaders nailed the opening goal before Naish bobbed-up with a duo of majors.

The first was a classy set-shot from beyond the arc, and the second sailed over the goal umpire’s hat after benefiting from a forward-half turnover.

The dashing winger also had a direct hand in another goal in the third term, helping the Tigers get the game back on their terms.

Richmond’s fourth debutant of 2019, Luke Nelson showcased his class and composure after cruising in for his first VFL major in the yellow and black.

The goal pricked the Tigers into action, however, North rallied and kicked a trio of majors to end the quarter with an 18-point lead.

If it was any chance of causing an upset, Richmond needed to make every post a winner in the final term.

Unfortunately, the Tigers’ comeback mission was made a whole lot tougher as the Roos scored three goals in quick succession, stretching the deficit to 33 points.

Budding defender Chad Harris showed effort and urgency from the back-half in arguably his best performance for the Club.

Harris was the poster boy for how the Tigers wanted the game played, and kept the visitors within striking distance in the last quarter.

Red-time goals to Luke Nelson, Shaun Mannagh and Mav Weller gave the rugged-up Richmond faithful a glimmer of hope but they were to no avail.

The Tigers owned the territory in the final term, but inaccuracy (3.7) meant they never really cut the margin to a point where the Roos felt jittery.

North was deadly accurate in the last quarter (6.0) which didn’t help Richmond’s cause.

Jack Graham was impressive around the contest with his grunt and running capacity.

Omitted from AFL level, Daniel Rioli and Connor Menadue were solid, their speed helping get the Tigers back in the game.

Richmond will look to treat the loss as a learning curve, setting its sights on a brunch date with Geelong at 11.00am next Saturday, June 8 at the Swinburne Centre.

If Naish doesn't play AFL next week it means we still have high defensive standards. :shh

That means we will see  Rioli play in VFL finals this yearv
The game is about winning the 50/50 which Naish did more often than not yesterday
As did Towner and Graham

I think I’m fairly consistent on what I dislike about certain footballers and defenders like Houli and previous Bellis, that don’t defend first and foremost before going on the attack.

If Houli played on a wing I wouldn’t be as harsh on him but he plays back and we basically play one defender short when he is in the side.

With Naish, I have seen him a few times at VFL level and I agree his defensive work needs work, but if played on a wing it’s a little less important as long as you are doing some damage of your own.

I would like to see Naish get a game to see what he is like at AFL level- surely he couldnt be any worse than Bellis or Menadue on a wing??

I think we all know if we play Bellis, Menadue and Houli as a defender, we won’t beat the good sides like Collingwood. They make you pay when playing down hill skiers.

Ellis can at least lay big tackles and often at important times,  Houli's stood up when it most mattered....having said that,  if Naish replaced either at this point, I wouldn't actually have a problem with it....I'm personally more excited by Turner as an outside prospect even though he was average yesterday... :shh

The problem is when Naish doesn't win the 50/50  he usually just gives up and jogs off...pretty much the same thing you -rightly- bagged Chol for... :shh

...and I wouldn't be worried about Rioli's defensive pressure when the whips are really cracking at the business end of the season....has more than enough runs on the board in that department..... :shh :shh.

Ryan Ferguson provides a summary of how the Tigers’ players performed in last Saturday's Round 9 loss to North Melbourne at Arden Street Oval.

Patrick Naish

28 disposals, two goals, three tackles & five clearances

“Impacted the game on offence, kicked some goals when we really needed them and set-up plenty of others. He was highly influential, he just needs to make sure he keeps being diligent with the defensive side of his game in keeping the pressure on.”

Jack Graham

24 disposals, 10 tackles, 10 handball receives & eight inside-50s

“One of our better players, inside and out (of the contest). Laid a lot of tackles, sent the ball forward inside-50 and gave us some drive.”

Derek Eggmolesse-Smith

22 disposals, three tackles, three clearances & five marks

“Was particularly strong in the air, took some nice contested marks and strong in the contest which was pleasing. Probably wasn’t to his normal standard with his decision making and execution with ball in hand, but that’s normally a strength, so he’ll be okay with that.”

Jacob Townsend

22 disposals, eight marks, five tackles & seven inside-50s

“Was one of our barometers again with his work-rate and aggression and physicality. He didn’t quite finish-off his work in front of goals which he’s normally really good at, but another strong game from ‘Towner’.”

Connor Menadue

21 disposals, six marks, seven inside-50s & three rebound-50s

“Gave us a lot of run off half-back for most of the game and was influential. We sent him into the midfield in the last quarter to see what he could do and he did okay.”

Mav Weller

19 disposals, four marks, two goals & four inside-50s

“Was particularly dangerous early and lively. Played a lot of midfield time, was able to also kick a couple of goals, which added to his game.”

Riley Collier-Dawkins

16 disposals, five tackles, three centre clearances & five clearances

“Was a bull inside and extracted the ball on numerous occasions, but just couldn’t get much outside ball, so he’ll be working on complementing his game in that manner.”

Callum Coleman-Jones

15 disposals, five marks & 10 hit-outs

“Had a solid day without being outstanding. Always looks dangerous in the air though and if he had of plucked a few that he had his hands on, it might have changed his impact.”

Fraser Turner

14 disposals, eight handball receives & three marks

“Didn’t get as much of the ball as he usually does and has been really creative and damaging for us in past weeks. We put him down back just for a little bit of experience which will be good for his growth, in the last quarter.”

Daniel Rioli

12 disposals, seven tackles & two clearances

“Started ‘slowish’ but pleasing to see in the second half he flourished. His tackling, nearly led the team in tackles. His pressure, he actually kick started our revival and got us back into the game, so some really positive signs there.”

Ben Miller

Five disposals, two spoils & one inside-50

“Played back and also forward, we like that he’s got the ability to do this, but he’s still trying to find a way to have more impact on games, be it forward or back.”

Mabior Chol

Five disposals, seven tackles & 14 hit-outs

“Love to see ‘Marbs’ have high tackle numbers and some of his pressure at times was good to see but he just wasn’t able to back-up his outstanding form from last week.
