Tigers’ ‘Rance-less’ defence has monster concerns
GLENN McFARLANE,

Richmond’s ‘Rance-less’ defence has held up admirably so far this season, but after being monstered for the second time in five weeks there remains a question mark on its vulnerability against big marking forwards.
Coach Damien Hardwick doesn’t think so, citing the lack of pressure in the midfield as the leading cause of Friday night’s 37-point loss to North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium, not the defensive structure.
He’s right in that sense, but opposition clubs will be looking at what the Kangaroos’ attack, and to an extent, what Bulldog Aaron Naughton did to the Tigers’ defence at the same venue in Round 7, and trying to replicate.
Naughton kicked five goals and took 14 marks for the Bulldogs in their win over the Tigers.
On Friday night, Ben Brown was too strong in the air with five goals and six marks, while Mason Wood (four goals and five marks) played one of his most complete games in Kangaroos colours.
Hardwick isn’t fazed, saying: “I thought they smashed us at the contest. You can put your best plans in place but if you are belted around the contest you will always look disorganised. That is going to happen when you don’t compete as hard as you possibly should.”
But the Tigers’ back half looked a little disorganised at times, and both they and the midfield will need to get themselves in order ahead of a Friday night’s appointment with Geelong — and Tom Hawkins — at the MCG.
It’s a massive game for the Tigers, and may tell us where they are headed this season.
Going into last Friday night’s game, the only team they had beaten in the top eight was Fremantle, and this challenge against the Cats will be a formidable one.
Against the Kangaroos, it wasn’t just the defence that looked at times out of whack for the Tigers, as their forward work wasn’t to their normal standard.
Richmond had more inside 50s than North Melbourne — only marginally with two extra — but were beaten in and around the ball, which is not their trademark.
Hardwick wasn’t worried about the treatment that key forward Tom Lynch is attracting from the opposition, but says he could be getting more off the umpires.
“Tom battles and creates contests and kicked one but Tom has come up with that through his career,” Hardwick said.
“He is a good player and could he have been looked after a bit more (by the umpires?) Probably.”

The fact that our midfield was getting smashed didn't seem to have anything to do with it. We could have had three Rances out there and the result would have been similar. We simply didn't match their intensity and that's why we lost.

No pressure in the midfield, ball comes in deep, Brown flaps his arms around, free kick, goal. Rinse, repeat.

Last week were media darlings, heaps of positive press about our premiership chances. Lose one game and we're done, huge concerns.
I am sick & tired of this reporting and just don't read it anymore.
The games going down the toilet anyway with rule changes, umpiring and nanny state tactics of political correctness.

Inexperienced defense kpps in Garthwaite and Balta does not help, both will be good players but they are 2 or 3 years and 50 games from it.

Anyone know what the go is with Griffin Logue from Fremantle? I know he was injured last year...wouldn't mind going after him.... :shh

Fit him into the Cerra deal....:shh

I would like to see Vlastuin go back and sure up the backline this week against Geelong.
And I would get rid of Garthwaite.
Broad to have a rest too and bring in another runner/tackler
Houli to a wing and McIntosh to take his spot in the backline.
So we still have Edwards, Stack, McIntosh, Vlastuin and Grimes for rebound run. That is enough to push Houli forward.
Astbury to Hawkins
Grimes to Ratugolea

Hawkins will do bad things to Astbury if Astbury cant get his act together. Hawkins could have a big day unfortunately.

Still coming back from injury via WAFL. Played the last 4 games for Peel Thunder (Freo's WAFL affiliate). Was Best player for Peel against Claremont a few weeks ago.
I reckon Freo would part with Cerra before Logue. The big Griff is seen, rightly or wrongly, as a massive part of Freo's rebuild.

Hopefully the fact they've done alright without him and the form of Ryan might he make him more getable...we need to acquire least 2 KPD's this off-season IMO...preferably at least one ready made and at least one 200cm +....hope we're also looking at Fletcher Roberts re: the former and Ben Kelly re: the latter... :shh

I'd chase Darcy Gardiner from the Lions
-
Is he out of contract? Good player but I dunno about another sub-195cm defender. Played every game this year- imagine Brisbane would want a bit in return....Roberts on the other hand - 196cm premiership defender, appears to be on the outer at the Dogs.... :shh

Also reckon the loss of Nankervis isn't helping...missing his intercepts when he goes back in the hole....something Slomo can't do or CCJ can't be expeted to do at his age....actually reckon Chol's the next best option - regarding that aspect of the game at least... :shh
