Can’t let them possess the footy like they did in round 2.
They had 174 marks 159 of them uncontested marks :banghead
They are gonna try it again but we have to smash them and force turnovers they’re gonna be pretty fired up after losing badly today.
-
Whatever we did last 2 games hasn't worked need to change it up and that starts in the ruck Nank can't come in do it by himself Soldo stays for me.Cut the over hand balling to and don't give them time and space.

BARRETT: Get ready for the biggest game of the season
AFL.com.au
Damian Barrett
Jul 21, 2019 9:20PM
THE BIGGEST game of the 2019 season presents itself on Friday night.
A wobbly Collingwood hosting a surging Richmond at the MCG.
The "house full" sign may even go up, so appealing is this contest and beautifully set up by the Tigers' four-match winning streak and the Pies' three losses from their past four games.
Damien Hardwick appears to be doing a Bart Cummings with his Tigers team this year, absorbing the early preparation setbacks through injuries and now fine-tuning a run to the big day.
Richmond toyed with Port Adelaide on Saturday. Reckon Toby Nankervis will be rushed back to take on Brodie Grundy, Collingwood's best in its disappointing loss to GWS on the weekend.
Collingwood has smashed Richmond the past two times they have met, last year's preliminary final and round two this year. It needs to reignite its sputtering premiership push in this game.

Pies face tough Friday night test against the Tigers
Michael Gleeson
The Age
22 July 2019
On Friday night Collingwood will play Richmond. About 90,000 people are expected to be there. It is uncertain which 22 from Collingwood show up.
We know which 22 from Richmond will be there, they turn up weekly, the numbers on the backs vary but 22 routinely show up with the same game, mentality and energy. Now even the numbers on the backs are becoming more regular and looking more comfortable with one another.
The pieces are returning to the team but also the mechanics of how those pieces slot together looks better by the week. Against Port on Saturday Richmond looked as sharp, cohesive and threatening as they have all year, indeed as they have for nearly two years.
The Tom Lynch-Jack Riewoldt pairing established the sort of synergy hoped for when the former Suns captain was recruited. Lynch has taken his time to get fit and is now holding marks, Riewoldt taken just his time not to be injured. This was the first we have seen of both looking fit and with touch and form.
Then there is the more unsettling arrangement when Dusty Martin goes to the goal square and pushes the other two away from goal. Bizarrely, this renders Riewoldt the third most immediate concern in the forward line. A concern in itself.
The Richmond attack looked as balanced, multi-pronged and dangerous as the GWS Giants.
Collingwood played the Giants on Saturday. It didn’t go well. Collingwood lost the game in the first quarter on Saturday, or perhaps earlier than that. Maybe they lost it on Thursday night. At selection the Giants went big and Collingwood went small. On Saturday big belted small.
The Giants loaded up with tall forwards and Collingwood had nothing to match them. Without Darcy Moore (hamstring) they had Jordan Roughead for height, Jeremy Howe for leap and a collection of flankers for run and pressure. It was not enough. The Giants played through poor Flynn Appleby’s opponent and within a quarter had a seven-goal lead. This time last year Tyson Goldsack came in and helped hold a backline together. Matt Scharenberg was dropped after the Hawthorn game this year after his forays back from another knee reconstruction.
It remained perplexing that neither Goldsack or Scharenberg were brought in for the Giants.
Collingwood is suffering from something Richmond never quite suffered from during its injury run. Their good players have fallen horribly out of form.
When Richmond had injuries in large part many of their better players still maintained their form. Dion Prestia, for instance, has been outstanding and of course much has been written of the young and emerging talent unearthed as a result of injuries.
Conversely, the Pies have struggled to maintain form. Their midfield was again beaten for pace and run on Saturday. The numbers say they had more inside fifties than GWS so, yes, they managed to have a look at the ball forward, but there was a significant difference in the way the Giants moved the ball into their forward line.
Partly that was because the Giants had targets to kick to that would mark the ball. Collingwood had Mason Cox. He is keeping a position in the team on the basis of an absence of alternatives who can second ruck. It can only be hoped that playing Richmond on the MCG reminds him of his career-high water mark and not the drowning efforts since.
When Collingwood were good they had a forward line like the Giants and Richmond that was multi-faceted. Previously when they took it into attack the forwards spread and there was a rotating option of Jaidyn Stephenson, Jordan De Goey or Will Hoskin-Elliott before thoughts turned to Cox or Brodie Mihocek.
Now Hoskin-Elliott is a memory of what he was last year, (Jamie Elliott not there last year but occasionally there this year, is injured again), Stephenson is in the stands, and De Goey either in the midfield or being double-teamed.
Arguably Cox has been hurt as much as anyone by Stephenson’s absence, a suspension that becomes more punishing to the side by the week. Without the threats such as Richmond and the Giants possess, Collingwood’s attack becomes predictable, and predictability is easier to defend for opposition defences have the luxury to roll off their opponents and double team De Goey in the air and to cut Cox’s run at the ball or climb over him.
Last week felt like Collingwood had rediscovered form but similar maladies afflicted them this week.
An injury to Darcy Moore depleting their backs, a midfield out-run and a too-sparse forward line. They have only recent history to comfort them against Richmond. The Tigers have the prospect of a top four spot.

The Tackle: Can Pies carry Cox against ‘big boy’ Tigers?
Mark Robinson,
Herald Sun
22 July 2019
Make no mistake about it, the Tigers look every bit like a premiership contender.
And this Friday night’s clash with Collingwood is going to be absolutely massive.
But how should the Magpies hit the MCG blockbuster given the struggles of Mason Cox?
Mark Robinson looks at both Collingwood, Richmond and plenty more in this week’s Tackle.
1. BIG BOYS COME TO PLAY
Richmond has a 4-1 record with Jack Riewoldt and Tom Lynch in the team and looks every inch a premiership contender.
The suggestion these two would take time to jell has been dismissed. Lynch is in terrific form and Riewoldt, already a selfless forward, is making further sacrifices to give Lynch more room.
Over the past two weeks with Riewoldt back in the team, Lynch has won 37 disposals, 26 contested possessions and 13 marks, had 23 score involvements and kicked 6.4. Riewoldt has kicked 4.2 and played a team role. They will pose a mountain of problems for Collingwood on Friday.
2. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE COLLINGWOOD FORWARD LINE?
Mason Cox’s output on Saturday raises questions. Is he a liability or is he surviving because of structure?
He had just four disposals against GWS, his fewest in more than 40 matches. It was the first time he has been held goalless this year. Since Round 6, Cox has averaged 43 ranking points, the seventh fewest of anyone to play five or more matches. Players below him include Ben King, Will Schofield and Billy Gowers.
Does coach Nathan Buckley persevere or change the structure and play a “small ball” set-up? That could mean returning Jordan De Goey to full-forward and surrounding him with Brody Mihocek, Josh Thomas, Will Hoskin-Elliott, Callum Brown and Travis Varcoe. It could also mean returning Chris Mayne to the forward 50m. It’s a bit radical, but how long can you hope Cox will turn it around?

I'm excited... Got a feeling it's time for us to get one back against the MFs...

Gee the media have jumped off Collingwood quickly. They are still very dangerous & formidable.
The destroyed the Eagles in the second half last week.

They’ve played one, maybe two good quarters of their past 16, on the other hand we’ve been pretty good in about 18 of our past 20 quarters.
It’s hard to ignore, even if you’re a Collingwood muppet like most of the media.

Pies v Tigers. You can already feel it.
By Ashley Browne
SEN
22 July 2019
Five days out and already, there is already great anticipation ahead of a genuine MCG Friday night blockbuster between competition heavyweights Collingwood and Richmond.
The Pies are floundering, having lost three of their last four games while the Tigers are the form team of the competition, with four wins on the trot.
But as we have learned in 2019, as parity rules and the AFL comes ever closer to emulating its beloved NFL mantra of ‘Any Given Sunday’, form counts for almost nought. And if there is any team in the last 12 months that has demonstrated it can take care of Richmond, it is the Magpies.
But they need a shake-up. The Pies have become pedestrian up forward, averaging just nine goals a game the last four weeks. Mason Cox is inconsistent, Will Hoskin-Elliott hasn't improved much and the x-factor, Jaidyn Stephenson, continues to sit in the stands.
The Pies can only look enviously over towards the Tigers, whose Jack Riewoldt-Tom Lynch forward line combination was at its best on Saturday against Port Adelaide. Lynch kicked three goals and had 12 score involvements, while Riewoldt also kicked three goals.
They’ll be licking their lips against a Collingwood backline that failed to cope with Giants trio Jeremy Cameron, Jeremy Finlayson and Harry Himmelberg, who kicked 13 goals between them last weekend.
But before we get too down on the Pies, they were rank outsiders against Richmond in the preliminary final last year and again in round two of this year and they prevailed both times. It’s a rivalry as good as there is in footy, not just because of geography and Jack Dyer and Lou Richards, the Cloke family and Adam Treloar, but also because the games start with a blank slate every time. And despite recent form, it will be the same on Friday night.

Money coming in for Pies.

If they get on top in the midfield, then the big dumb Yank will get plenty of looks at it.

The AFL website is tipping us to win by over 3 goals.

Match preview: Collingwood v Richmond
AFL.com.au
Ben Collins
Jul 23, 2019
Where and when: MCG, Friday June 26, 7.50pm
What it means for Collingwood: The Magpies' season is quickly spiralling out of control. They've lost three of their past four games, two of them by at least 44 points, but a win against the Tigers will keep them in the top four.
What it means for Richmond: The Tigers seems to be timing their run to perfection, and a fifth successive win will lift them back into the top four for the first time since round 10. They also have the chance to gain some belated vengeance for last year's preliminary final drubbing.
The stat: The Pies have smashed the Tigers in their past two clashes, by 39 points in last year's preliminary final and by 44 points in round two, while restricting Damien Hardwick's men to just eight and 10 goals respectively.
The match-up: Tom Lynch v Jordan Roughead
Tigers spearhead Lynch (ranked No. 294 in the Official AFL Player Ratings) is moving into top gear but former Bulldogs big man Roughead (No. 220) has been one of the value recruits of the year. Lynch kicked three goals last time.
It's a big week for: Jason Castagna
The Richmond opportunist has been in good touch with eight goals in his past three games, but in his past two outings against the Pies he has averaged just nine possessions and tallied just one behind. This is his chance to shine against a depleted Collingwood defence.
Big call: After taking a remarkable piggyback speccy against Greater Western Sydney last week, spring-heeled Magpie Jeremy Howe will, for his next trick, complete a human pyramid screamer.
Prediction: Richmond by 21 points

Is it possible for us to play Riewoldt Lynch and Chol in the forward line and try to create a big man advantage in our forward line.

Would make us way too vulnurable to the rebound....plus it's also likely to be wet... :shh

Do you think they will go into this game with 1 big man?
(1 of Soldo, Chol or Nank)
I think with Chol being so athletic, he plays.
And it’s just the decision of who plays out of Nank and Soldo.
I would go with Nank but to be honest I wouldn’t care if they gave him another week in the twos.
No point rushing him back for this game IMO, if he isn’t 100% ready.
-
Played a half after what 9 weeks out and with only a 5 day turnaround from the vfl game, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s held back 1 more week.
As for Grundy smashing us in the hitouts, think you’ll find he does that to 75% of the rucks in the league. Don’t think soldo will be any different.

I agree but I presume Ramps was talking about playing Chol in the forward line at the same time as Jack & Lynch...... :shh

Buckley said he was under no illusions how tough it will be for his side on Friday night.
“The closer you get to September probably more pointed it becomes,” he said.
“I think on a broad brush, Richmond are playing as good football as any team in the competition at the moment.
“Their offence is through the roof the last four weeks and their defence is holding up as it always has.
“It seems they’ve got momentum and they’re up and about and coming good at the right time of the year.
“It’s as big a challenge as you’re going to face, and for us they don’t get any easier.
“It’s an opportunity for us to test ourselves against a team that’s in really good nick.”

Cox’s best ever game was in the prelim last year.
Has not come close to repeating that performance.
Hopefully Dimma learnt something from that woeful day.

If we play two rucks (Nank and Chol hopefully) there will times that one of those 2 will be in the forwardline with Jack and Lynch.
With all the rotations it has to happen.
I think you and I both know Soldo is no good and if Nank is fit to play, he takes his spot.

Yeah.... don't play blokes on him who spent a few days in hospital on a drip :help

Yes that is what i was asking ...
Rioli Riewoldt Stack
Castanga Lynch Chol
As a forward 6
-
Since jacks gotten back it has seemed like chols spent a good chunk of the game like 40-50% sitting on the bench
So you would think between doing the ruck work, roaming around the ground and when lynch or jack are having spells that there is actually very little time that the 3 of them are all forward at the same time.
-
It is a final
For us
A lot to prove after the last 2 losses
I’m
Still very sceptical on that prelim performance but no excuse the last game
-
Is it possible for us to play Riewoldt Lynch and Chol in the forward line and try to create a big man advantage in our forward line.
Don't think so, he seems to get in the way of Jack and Lynch.
-
It's going to be wet. Interesting to see if there will be any late changes.

Yep, the weather likely to play a part

For the majority of this season, I have been able to remove emotion from my observations of our games.
And in that I have been able see how valuable this season has been for the playing group and club going forward.
Having said that, whenever we play Collingwood the anxiety around game day seems to creep in and the want to win "the weekends game" becomes wanting the opposition to be smashed to a stuffing pulp, in addition to this so does my superstition. Which is something I thought I got rid of when we won the flag in '17 but evidently not...
There always seems to be some little indicators that trigger this superstition, and I've had a few this week.
Back to back social events with Collingwood supporters this week starting tonight, whilst the game is on, all week hosts on SEN haver been saying were a shoe in to beat the pies, talk on the footy shows earlier this week etc etc.
I absolutely want us to stuffing smash them tonight as payback for the Prelim but I have a bad feeling about tonight, it almost feels like that match against pies where there was a DJ at punt road prior to the game... I really hope Im wrong
Despite this even if we did happen to lose tonight, It wont derail our season it will just make it a bit more challenging.
What does everyone else think??
-
I think we need to keep our cards close to our chest.
Unfortunately we’re not in a position where we can afford to lose too many games but I don’t think losing tonight ends our chances (although watch the media close the book on us tonight if we do).
Everyone harping on about how soft the end of our draw is, but all the other top teams get to have a good look at us on our home deck running into the finals; doesn’t seem all that advantageous to me....
-
I've been pretty confident all week - the only thing that worries me is the circling of the wagons by Buckley this week.
We on the other hand are due to play the perfect game. Something is brewing.
this is the moment !!!

Don't think we will see that as a starting forward line
Think you will all find we trialed something different last week. Rather than just Macca and BEllis holding down the wings for 85% of the game we had Lambert, Shed and Bolts spending a lot more time there with The BEllis spending time as a forward flanker and all those boys rotating HF/Wing..... :shh
-
I just hope we have learned our lesson and put a tag on Sidebottom to last 2 games cut us up.
Yes. :clapping :clapping :clapping
Is it possible this will happen? Not holding my breath.

Classic post EEA :lol
I suggest you make yourself a Bonox, first watch the last quarter of the 2017 round 21 loss to the cats which will initially make things more stressful for you.
But then crack open a six pack and sit back and watch the last quarter of the 2017 final vs Geelong, then the highlights of the preliminary final vs GWS then after that watch the 2017 premiership win.
That should cure your superstitions. :rollin

I’ve got a feeling if it doesn’t stop raining Chol might make way for a small. I don’t think they’ll risk him one out vs Grundy. Soldo won’t be able to keep up with him around the ground but will at least compete in the Ruck contest. Strange they didn’t bring in caddy. Maybe butler gets another chance tonight.

How about Buckley pre-game arrogantly saying if they bring their defence they can handle anything we throw on offence ::).
-
Wow what a disgrace. 2 frees in the first minute and a shot on goal..disgusted...
-
aaaand the free kick bonanza has started early, resulting in a goal for collingwood
-
Wow how's the squib from Ellis? Can't defend that and the commentators called it out - was expecting contact and stopped going for the ball...
-
now we starting to fire

BEllis owes Shorty a loopy kick now...:shh

Really? He stopped running for the ball and just put his hand out. Squibbed clearly haha

Wowsers
Houli long down the north wing, Jack with the chest mark, long into F50 - Lynch gathers, burns away from Rough and snaps a massive goal!

BEllis owes Shorty a loopy kick now...:shh
Really? He stopped running for the ball and just put his hand out. Squibbed clearly haha
I know he did, it was sickening. But Shorty knows better than to give it air time when kicking to Brave Brando :lol
-
Im digging the run now, saw them skumbags running back to defence like they were at the tail end of a marathon and it was only the tail end of the first quarter
-
stuff that last minute
-
peeed off about conceding 2 goals with 34 seconds to go...don't go to sleep and let em get junk time goals clowns, we got this.

In front of us, kick was a joke.

Apparently Cotchin is off with a Hammy? wtf?? Hope its fake news and just hanging round for his missus or something or just a twinge.
-
I'll defend Brando this time. I reckon he copped the lights in the eyes at the critical moment. The way he got his hand up very early looked as if he'd lost the ball in the lights. By the time he sighted the ball it was too late ...
Some of his other efforts were actually worse than that one ...

Cotch has a "minor hammy" according to Richo and now Balmey. Not just awareness. He'll miss next week at least :(. Cotch went off halfway through the 1st qtr. No ice. Just put the jacket on at 1/4 time. So we've been a man down on rotation since.

we better not fade out like wankers here, looking sloppy

Ellis did good just then, saved us a goal, I forgive his earlier trash...for now

He did. Contested. It's efforts like that that make me so frustrated because I know he CAN contest but sometimes chooses not to...
-
we are getting some frees tonight...nice
-
Pressure and tackling and let's keep it simple and nail our chances.
-
KLam Slam !!! lol nice bend it like Beckam
-
Letting them chip away at our % now. Makes me angry
-
Yeah peeing me off no end, just crap, really infuriating.
-
Solid win, but I want to crush their souls, is it too much to ask?

Same. Should have been 10 goals
-
Fantastic first 50 minutes in which we set up the win. Awesome footy. Won the contests, too quick for them on the spread and too tall up forward with Lynch and Jack.
Ordinary last 70 though. Too cutesy lairising especially forward of centre butchering chances while allowing them too many cheap junk time goals late. A set shot goalkicking turned to crap as well :P. A 5 goal win that should have been 10+. It's the modern game to conserve the bodies for later in the season when it counts but it's the one annoying thing about us. We often love to control the game and preserve a lead rather than smashing an archrival.
Oh well, always good to pump the Pies and gain some revenge :veryhappy. Even better to replace them in the top 4 :thumbsup.

Ran out of steam, but any win by 30 against Collingwood is good

Anyone who says the Magpies aren't a protected species in the umpires eyes has no idea.
Second to the ball all night, and win the free kick count 19-16.

Reckon we put the cue in the rack, rather than ran out of puff. Annoying to let em jag those last 3 (albeit they were pretty tinny goals). But Lynch was (correctly) rested for the last 10 mins.
We embarrassed them, that’s all that counts 😉

Tell you what, the pies hate tough footy don't they? Bar a few like Pendles, but the likes of Treloar etc hate the physicality. Went soft
-
A wet September and the flag is ours... :shh
-
It was annoying to concede 3 goals in junk time but any tiger fan would of taken a 5 goal win before the game.

A wet September and the flag is ours... :shh
This.
Not only does wet weather suit our game style but it takes away that chip kick possession style from the opposition that’s done well against us in the past.
-
The club resorted to tweeting that the injury to Cotchin during the game was a bonus
Nice culture they have down there .
30 or 3 who cares we embarrassed those pretenders
