They've not beaten one team in the top four'

The Age
23 July 2019

Their season was looking shaky during the mid-season bye but, after four wins in a row, Richmond have jumped into premiership calculations.

Which makes this Friday night's showdown with Collingwood – a club that has dropped three of its past four matches – such a compelling encounter to start AFL round 19.

Football writer Caroline Wilson offers a word of caution, especially after the Tigers have fallen badly in their past two clashes with last year's grand finalists, including an infamous defeat in the preliminary final.

"Everyone seems to be talking up Richmond at the moment and, this is not a beanie-wearing comment, but it's a cautionary comment: they've not beaten one team in the top four this year," Wilson says.

"They haven't played Brisbane, they haven't played West Coast."

On The Age Real Footy Podcast this week, Michael Gleeson, Jake Niall, Jimmy Bartel and Caroline Wilson examine the key question surrounding Richmond: are they the real deal?

I think its spot on to be honest. A lot of the premiership hype around us is based off the back of us repeating what we did in 2017, not what we have done so far this year.

We have beaten one team that you'd put into the "contender" bracket for this year (being GWS) - and that was in our conditions on our home ground when they were missing 3-4 key personnel.

Not saying for one second we're undeserving of the focus and belief, just that sometimes the simplest observations sometimes get lost in the mire of hype and expectations.

Yes but we were also missing key personnel when other contenders beat us..... :shh

GWS has spent 13 weeks in the top 4 this year and we beat them.

And haven't played two of the current top 4 as yet.

So this conversation is better placed after round 23, if in fact we lose to Collingwood, West Coast and Brisbane.

Although good motivation for Friday night

Oh please... Beat GWS (top 4 mostly), essendon, port, Freo and Hawks all of which are in or around the 8.

We've lost two games to top 4. The rest we have bested or they aren't too 4/8 because we beat them already...

lol Gws are in the same shape with injuries we were for a big chunk of games and at the wrong time of yr. lets be real they were without their best 3 or 4 mids when coniglio went down early.
How do we go without Martin, Cotchin, Prestia and lets say for arguments sake Edwards.

Round three we were missing two Key position players riewoldt and Rance and Grimes so we were in trouble with talls.yep they cant be replaced but everyone else was there including the entire engine room.

Would like to see both teams at FULL strength reckon it would be one hell of a dog fight. But make no mistake without your best mids it wont matter what the defense or forwards do, one end will be constantly under the pump and the other end more than likely starved of opportunity.

This yr imo we have done extremely well to win what games we havebut lets not kid ourselves thus far the wins and losseshave come against the following.

GCS WIN 18TH
MEL WIN 17TH
CAR WIN 16TH
SYD WIN 15TH
STK WIN 14TH
NM  LOSS  13TH
WB  LOSS 12TH
FRE WIN 11TH
HAW WIN 10TH
PAD WIN 9TH
PAD WIN 9TH

So far that is 9 of our eleven wins against teams outside the 8 and by round 23 i dont think the ladder is going to change too much

AD LOSS 8TH
ESS WIN 7TH
GWS LOSS 6TH
GWS WIN 6TH
COL LOSS 4TH
WCE ---- 3RD
BL  ---- 2ND
GEE LOSS 1ST.

S o far of the teams in the 8 we have lost 4 won against an ess team making up numbers and an injury riddled GWS imo Caro Wilson has every right to say what she has.I dont get the butt hurt peoplke display just because a journalist is balanced in her opinion.

Are we overrating Richmond? AFL legends weigh in

Both Garry Lyon and Tim Watson don’t believe the hype train surrounding Richmond is being overblown.

The Tigers have emerged as one of the premiership favourites in recent weeks, despite a tumultuous season.

They’re slowly getting back their best players and their form is returning to their best and Watson feels they’ve shown they can win it before, which is part of why people are so high on Richmond.

“I know that’s the argument, they haven’t beaten anyone and that may or may not be the case, but we are basing our opinions of Richmond because of their body of work over a couple of years and we know what their best players are capable of when they have their best players fit and capable,” Watson told SEN Breakfast.

“We know they went and recruited potentially one of the best key forwards in the game (Tom Lynch), but they didn’t have Jack Riewoldt playing alongside him. Now they do so all of us reckon they’re going to be better because of that.”

Lyon agrees, saying the Tigers are arguably better placed now than in their premiership year.

“I’m seeing them as dangerous,” he said.

“You add Sydney Stack into the team who’s one of the three best young players to emerge this season.

“You’ve got players back, Toby Nankervis will be back, I think they’re potentially better.”

Just been mucking around with the ladder predictor at work.

Frankly, if we don't win all our final games (which I don't see happening), we probably won't finish top 4. GWS won't drop a game from here.

And if we lose 2, then we'll probably be playing the tinny Bombers in the first week of the finals - we all know what's going to happen then,
