Match preview: Melbourne v Richmond
AFL.com.au
Sarah Black
Jul 31, 2019
Where and when: MCG, Saturday August 3, 7.25pm AEST
What it means for Melbourne: With the pressure increasing on both Simon Goodwin and Melbourne's playing list, a top-four scalp would open the valve somewhat. It would also be only the Demons' third win in their past 11 games.
What it means for Richmond: The Tigers' percentage took a battering at the start of the season but has slowly been on the improve. Saturday night could be a chance to boost it further.
The stat: Final term fade-outs have been a big issue for the Dees recently. Over its past four matches, Melbourne has conceded an average of 28.5 points in the final quarter, while managing an average of just 13.3 itself.
The match-up: Michael Hibberd v Dustin Martin
Hibberd held Martin to just 17 disposals the last time these sides met, the superstar Tiger's second-lowest tally for the year. The Dee, ranked 191 in the AFL Player Ratings, is versatile enough to take on Martin (11th overall) whether he's forward or in the middle.
It's a big week for: Simon Goodwin
After storming to a preliminary final last season, it's been a disastrous year for Goodwin and his Melbourne charges. The Dees have now dropped a game below Carlton in 17th place and are staring down the barrel of falling 13 places in 12 months.
Big call: Dylan Grimes is in red-hot form behind the ball and will finish with 12 intercepts.
Prediction: Tigers by 35 points.

From Barrett's Sliding Doors column:
IF ... a top two, or even top four, spot may yet be determined by percentage ...
THEN ... a round 20 match against the embarrassingly woeful Demons presents as manna from heaven.

FINAL INTERCHANGES

Hopefully we come out hard from the start after seeing the round so far being one of upsets and near upsets. Not a time for complacency.
-
Shocking kick Houli. Our forward was wide open.
-
That's a better one Bachar. Jack swings around and Bolts marks in front of Lynch 30 out. Misses.
Sheesh we should be two up already :banghead.
1 - 0
-
Great kick to Sheds in middle.
Lucky the Melbourne defender dropped a sitter though. Dusty to Jack inside to George. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 1.1-7
Melb 0.0-0
-
Lynch fumble on the wing allows Melbourne in and Grimes caught out gives away the free to Lewis.
7 - 6
-
Getting smashed in the clearances at the stoppages so far :banghead.
7 - 12
-
Started like millionaires again.
-
There's no pressure out there.
-
Geez we've been off so far with our kicking. We keep kicking it to the Dees advantage :banghead.
7 - 18
-
Nice pass by Lambert to Chol on the lead. Goal! :gotigers
Needed that one.
Rich 2.1-13
Melb 3.0-18
-
Dusty scragged = no free ::)
Melbourne player fends off and gets tackled = not HTB ::)
13 - 19
-
Great smother Rioli. Graham goal :gotigers.
Rich 3.1-19
Melb 3.1-19
-
Quarter time
Richmond 3.2-20
Melbourne 3.1-19
Goals: Castagna, Chol, Graham.
Lucky we're playing the Dees. Started the game playing cute bruise free footy but we were able to get back control of that quarter in the last 10 minutes.
-
Interesting start, need to do the hard physical work before we default to the typical tap and go stuff.
-
Has Edwards hit a target yet either by hand or foot?
-
That was 15 :huh.
Feels like we're going too fast at times before our forwards are ready.
Down field free to Jack 30 out. Misses.
We've butchered some shots so far :banghead.
22 - 19
-
They make us pay for our misses.
22 - 25
Has Edwards hit a target yet either by hand or foot?
One of ones playing too fast. Teammates being set up.
-
This type of footy really is annoying
-
That's a class kick by Lynch from there :clapping :bow :gotigers.
Rich 4.4-28
Melb 4.1-25
-
We can't keep starting our attacks from defence. Need to start winning some centre clearances or at least not allow Melbourne to waltz out of the centre square so often.
-
Jack goes for the speckie but can't hold it. Dusty to Caddy who grubbers a goal :gotigers.
Rich 5.4-34
Melb 4.2-26
-
We're making the easy look hard tonight.
Lynch goal :gotigers
Rich 6.4-40
Melb 4.2-26
-
Keeping them in game.
-
Back to dumb footy :banghead.
Bolts should have pumped it deep forward yet handballs short to Rioli who's not ready for it. Turnover.
Broad doesn't bend down enough and the ball deflects off his leg OOTF.
We leave a Melbourne player all by himself 25m clear of anyone else in their forward line :banghead.
40 - 32
-
Another to them.
40 - 38
-
What has happened to Butler. He's done.
If he gets another game I'd be stunned. Trade him for whatever you can get. Soft as butter
-
That's just a lazy kick Dan.
-
First time tonight someone has lowered the eyes and hit up someone open in our forward line. Good kick Prestia.
Bolts misses again. That's another gettable one missed :banghead.
41 - 38
-
Shut up Darcy. That's twice you've barracked for a free against us for "dragging it under" when we didn't ::)/
-
We have a dozen players who do not look interested at all tonight.
-
That's 50. It wasn't thrown on the full back to Lynch.
-
Did the boys have a few pints before the game or something? They look slow and half asleep tonight!
-
Half-time
Richmond 3.2 6.5-41
Melbourne 3.1 6.2-38
Goals: Lynch 2, Castagna, Chol, Graham, Caddy.
-
Terrible game :banghead
-
It starts in the contests/stoppages. Melbourne are on top and so we haven't been able to exploit their weakness on the outside and down back. We need to start evening up the clearances especially centre clearances.
ps. Bolts and our other mids - we have two big forwards and with the 6-6-6 rule you pump it forward straight away when you have the chance of a clean centre clearance.
-
Jack dropped a chest mark. A right royal sitter 15m out :P.
We get it back and Lambert nails the set shot :gotigers.
Rich 7.5-47
Melb 6.2-38
-
Need to wakeup big-time to sloppy and over handball and to cute at times playing at there level need a rocket.
-
That's pathetic defending, Tiges :facepalm.
47 - 44
-
:lol
Soldo with the soccer volley from the ruck for a goal :rollin.
Rich 8.5-53
Melb 7.2-44
-
Brayshaw complaining about us finally being in front in the free kick count for once ::).
Jack marks 50 out. Kick fades right.
We're going 50% from set shots tonight. 4 from 8 shots.
54 - 44
-
What has happened to Edwards. Mum said he isn’t allowed to get his shorts and jumper dirty tonight?
-
We're missing the easy ones and kicking the hard ones.
Great kick from the boundary by Graham :clapping :gotigers
Rich 9.6-60
Melb 7.2-44
-
What has happened to Edwards. Mum said he isn’t allowed to get his shorts and jumper dirty tonight?
He's just off tonight. Shanking kicks and giving off hot handballs.
-
Ballwatching.
Thankfully they finally miss one.
60 - 45
-
Making hard work of this us.
-
Great overhead mark by Grimes.
Dusty's low percentage snap around the body misses.
61 - 46
-
Prestia's ping on the run misses.
62 - 46
-
Overpossessing.
Butler's snap misses.
63 - 46
-
Keeping them in the game tigers.
-
Rioli from 45 puts it through :gotigers.
Rich 10.9-69
Melb 7.4-46
We're dominating territory in the wet.
-
Dumb Broad. Not only was it a lazy kick but in the wet you don't kick short through traffic in defence.
-
The wet is stopping Melbourne using those 45 kicks they used in the first half.
From the turnover, Prestia hits up Lynch 40 out. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 11.9-75
Melb 7.4-46
-
Inside 50s this quarter: 20 - 6
Get the long stops Butler.
-
Still doing dumb things at times but that was a dominate quarter in the wet.
3/4 time
Richmond 3.2 6.5 11.9-75
Melbourne 3.1 6.2 7.4-46
Goals: Lynch 3, Graham 2, Castagna, Chol, Caddy, Soldo, Rioli, Lambert.
-
It's just Sheds' night.
76 - 46
-
Ellis short pass to Butler just inside F50. Goes to the top of the square and it's rushed.
77 - 46
-
Gift goal to Melbourne :banghead. Ump claimed a jumper punch by Astbury in the goalsquare.
77 - 52
Edit: Talk about a soft free ::).
-
Keeping them in it went dumb footy.Few blokes Short and Caddy,Butler letting us down.
-
Jack point. That's 3 behinds tonight.
78 - 52
-
Another set shot miss :P. Rioli misses from 35 out and a great run down tackle.
79 - 52
-
We couldn't decide who wanted to take the shot as we had about 5 Tigers running in a wave through the middle. Rioli long to the square and Jack can;t mark. Point.
We get it back and Dusty drives it home :gotigers.
Rich 12.14-86
Melb 8.4-52
-
That wasn't high :huh. Grimes got him in the side. Dunkley threw his head back after contact to con the ump.
The only way they are getting goals is from the umps ::).
86 - 58
-
We’ve pulled up stumps a bit earlier than usual by the look of it.
-
Burnt them on transition again moving in a wave. Butler finds Bolts 20 out. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 13.14-92
Melb 9.6-60
-
We’ve pulled up stumps a bit earlier than usual by the look of it.
Just doing what we have to do. We rarely seem to smash teams even if we can.
-
Won by 33 pts :gotigers.
Take the win and move on to Carlton next week.
-
Final Score
Richmond 3.2 6.5 11.9 13.15-93
Melbourne 3.1 6.2 7.4 9.6-60
Goals: Lynch 3, Graham 2, Castagna, Chol, Caddy, Soldo, Rioli, Lambert, Martin, Bolton.
-
Yep had to slug it out today can't win pretty all the time.Overuse of handball at times and some silly play.Short for me is not best 22 can't defend and Butler not the same player since injuries . Caddy needs to go up a gear or find himself out of our best 22 again.
-
In the conditions, we really did give them a pasting. Only our inaccuracy, their accuracy kept the margin to under 10 goals. Basically twice as many scoring shots.
The key for us is apparently no injuries from the match.
