Title: St Kilda requiring similar AFL financial support as the expansion clubs: Gill
Post by: one-eyed on August 22, 2019, 11:55:29 AM
Gill McLachlan revealed VFL foundation club St Kilda was being financially assisted at levels similar to expansion clubs Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney.

Asked about the financial drain on the competition of the struggling Suns, McLachlan said: "To grab a club, St Kilda has been around over a hundred years, and still requires an amount of support approximating the expansion clubs.

This is shameful from a St K perspective.
They should go to tassie and simply be knowns
as Saints FC playing out of Hobart and Launceston.

The problem is that the assistance they are being given is huge based on the statements made. Im not saying weve never had problems but weve always at some point got our house in order. St K never has. Theyve always had problems.

How much did they waste on Seaford? It cost the local council down there around $4m of ratepayers' money. Now the Saints have more money being poured into going back to Moorabbin.

Not talking about us. All club's have received assistance over time

But right now St Kilda currently isn't the only Vic based club receiving 7 figure sum assitance

St Kilda have received at least $4 million more each year for the last three years from the AFL than the next Victorian teams.

The Saints have received an AFL distribution significantly greater than any other Victorian team for the past three years under the equalisation model, with funding of more than $20 million a year putting them closer in funding terms to the Brisbane Lions than the next Victorian teams.

St Kilda have been comparatively weak commercially, last year earning $7.7 million in corporate or sponsorship income which, was a $1 million improvement on the year before but was still $1.7 million less than even the Brisbane Lions were able to generate.

In contrast Melbourne generated $11.3 million in sponsorship and the Western Bulldogs $12.6 million. At the top end of the scale Collingwood declared $20 million in sponsorship or corporate income, Hawthorn $16.6 million and Richmond $15.5 million in their annual reports.
