Port caused an upset and knocked off the Dogs in the VFL. So we play them in the Preliminary Final next weekend.
Early word is it will be 2pm on Sunday, 15 Sept. at North Port (Adcon Stadium).
-
If Chris Scott was our VFL coach [thank gawd not!] he'll be sooking about playing the Prelim at the opposition's home ground :wallywink.
It won't be easy against Port there but we've always had trouble playing the Dogs (at either level), so I'm not complaining that they've been knocked out.
-
Knocked out at both levels too
-
Glad we have this to hold us over for next week.
-
True. Keeps the whole list training together and keeps pressure up on senior spots. Touchwood not :pray but also allows us ready made match-fit replacements if we cop an injury.

Cheer taz :cheers.

Richmond’s VFL side will play in a preliminary final against Port Melbourne next Saturday afternoon, another bonus to allow depth players to push their chances.
It means the likes of Marlion Pickett and Dan Butler will again attempt to break into the Tigers side after excellent form in the VFL qualifying final.
The Tigers had dispensation for Noah Balta to take part in that VFL qualifying final after playing in the senior side in Round 23, but he wasn’t fit to play.
They are unlikely to ask that question of the VFL again as the AFL teams trains as normal over the next fortnight.

VFL Tigers eye a spot in the Grand Final
Brenton Mann
AFL media
Sep 12, 2019
Richmond VFL will fight for a spot in the Grand Final on Saturday, when they square off against Port Melbourne in a preliminary final at Adcon Stadium.
The Tigers, fresh from a week off, have the task of knocking off a rampaging Port Melbourne at the Borough's home fortress.
It’s been a long time between drinks for the two sides that met all the way back in Round 2, with the Tigers prevailing by 43 points.
Given it will be over five months between outings, not much can be taken out of their most recent encounter. But the Borough have some shining traits that Richmond will have to curtail to secure the win.
Richmond VFL coach and recently awarded VFL Coach of the Year, Craig McRae, is aware the result will hinge on who handles the heat at the coalface.
“We haven’t played them for a while...but their contest and pressure has been something that’s been a real feature”, McRae said.
“You look at the last two or three weeks stats-wise and those things stood out."
McRae was quick to acknowledge the honour he recieved at the VFL Best and Fairest night, alongside Hugh Beasley and defensive partner-in-crime Dan Coffield, who were granted back-half posts in the VFL Team of the Year.
“It’s great reward for those guys and I mentioned at training that individual awards are only achieved through great team success”, McRae said.
“The team performs well and the individuals get better and this case ‘Beaser’, myself and ‘Coff’ are the ones recognised. But we’re not naïve to think that we’re not in those positions without the contributions that have taken place throughout the year.
“While we’re grateful, we appreciate all of the other stuff that goes with it."
The potential for a one-on-one duel between 2019 ‘Frosty’ Miller medallist for the VFL's leading goalkicker, Port Melbourne's Jordan Lisle, and VFL Team of the Year full-back, Hugh Beasley, adds a vail of intrigue to this cut-throat final.
Richmond’s mantra, however, is not centred around individual matchups, rather, a collective pursuit to curtail the opposition’s strengths and be hard to play against.
However, McRae will no doubt have a contingency plan for if the Port Melbourne spearhead catches fire.
“We’ll have some options but he’s certainly a player that we’ll have to watch—he’s a quality player at this level”, McRae said.
On the road to the preliminary final, Richmond pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in VFL history, clawing their way back from a 40-point deficit at three-quarter time to defeat the Bombers by two points in the qualifying final.
“Upon reflection, our balance around the contest was reasonably poor, so we’re looking at that and ways we can improve. But ultimately, the greatest lesson we took out of the game was the belief we have in this group”, McRae said.
“It’s been a special group all year and we’ve found ways to win in all different circumstances and all different venues and different conditions.
"So, we go into (Saturday's) game and our opposition can’t take our belief away from us...we’ve built that over a number of weeks."
Toby Nankervis was the hero in Richmond’s come-from-behind win. However, with Nankervis returning to AFL duties, the rucking responsibility will likely be passed to able lieutenants, Callum Coleman-Jones, Mabior Chol and possibly Noah Balta.
This will not be uncharted waters for the Tigers, with all three having handled the workload during the season.
“We’ve juggled that ruck position all year with (Ivan) Soldo, 'CJ' (Coleman-Jones) has had to carry the load for a major part of the year and then ‘Marbs’ (Chol) did it for little stints as well,” McRae said.
“We’ve got good flexibility in our team and ‘Nank’ goes out but he only played 60 per cent of the (qualifying final) game. It was a pretty special 60 per cent, particularly in the last quarter. Even ‘Garthy’ (Ryan Garthwaite) played some minutes in the ruck...so I think we’ve got good scope in that part of the game."
Chol, Balta and Coleman-Jones have all had stints at AFL level this season and have a shown growth in their development.
Twenty-year-old Coleman-Jones, 200cm, has averaged 15.4 disposals, five marks, four tackles and 17 hit-outs across 17 games this year, as well as kicking 10 goals.
McRae is bullish about what his young ruckman is shaping into.
“He’s been a real standout in terms of development,” McRae said.
“The two-year growth for him has been profound. We had a really targeted program for him last year that he grew within, and this year he looks like he’s gone to a whole new level.
“I think he’s a really exciting prospect. His ground level stuff and his contest-to-contest stuff is as good as any I’ve seen at this level for a young, developing ruckman and we’ve got high hopes for him."
Saturday’s preliminary final will be the Tigers second in three years. Richmond fell agonisingly short of premiership glory against the Borough in 2017.
McRae points to the differences he’s felt between the two finals series.
“It’s all a new experience for us and every campaign’s different, the build-up’s different…but I think this group right from the start of the year looked hungry”, McRae said.
“In 2017 we got a bit of a run-on late and had a lot of experience that drove that and we had the whole footy club that was abuzz amongst that.
“This group, right from the practice games, have this hunger and want to win and an ability to connect really well, so those things in particular are a main reason why we’re in the position we are at the moment."
On Saturday, as its been all year, this group will be hungry, connected and will look ‘Richmond’.
Tickets to the game are available here (https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/2019-vfl-preliminary-final-1-richmond-vs-port-melbourne-tickets-72019443093?ref=estw). Those unable to make it to the clash can watch it live on Channel 7 from 2.00pm.

VFL PREVIEW: Preliminary Finals
RICHMOND vs PORT MELBOURNE – Saturday 2.10pm @ Adcon Stadium
* Watch live on CHANNEL 7 or listen live on SEN2 DIGITAL and CASEY RADIO 97.7FM.
2019 ENCOUNTER
Rd 2 @ Swinburne Centre: Richmond 13.14 (92) d Port Melbourne 7.7 (49)
After no goals were kicked in a slogging first quarter, the Tigers drew away with four majors to one in the second term and then blew the margin out in the final stanza. Mabior Chol and Callum Moore (two goals apiece) were among 10 Richmond goalkickers, while Patrick Naish and Fraser Turner led the Tigers with 25 disposals each. Borough midfielder Shannen Lange was the game’s most prolific player with 27 touches.
FORMLINES
Richmond (17-2 overall record) is riding a seven-match winning streak following a stunning two-point comeback triumph over Essendon in a qualifying final two weeks ago. Its most recent conqueror – Footscray in Round 14 – is now eliminated from the finals.
Port Melbourne (12-7-1) lost four straight games between Round 12 and 16 but has won five of its last six, including somewhat unexpected victories in sudden-death finals against Geelong by 40 points and then Footscray by 15 points last week.
LAST MATCH
The Tigers staged one of the VFL’s most remarkable recent comebacks to pip the Bombers, overturning a 40-point three-quarter-time deficit thanks to a late Toby Nankervis goal. The AFL-listed ruck also led Richmond with 22 touches, 33 hitouts and 10 clearances, while Marlion Pickett (22 disposals and two goals), Callum Coleman-Jones (16 and seven marks) and Dan Butler (four goals) were all important in the win.
The Borough conceded 23 more inside-50s and five more scoring shots to the Bulldogs but prevailed with efficiency in front of goal and tough defence. Eli Templeton (team-high 25 disposals and 10 clearances), co-captain Tom O’Sullivan (20 and eight clearances) and Jarryd Blair (13 and nine tackles) led the midfield effort, as Dion Johnstone (11 rebound-50s) and Dylan Van Unen (seven) drove from the back half.
KEY QUESTION
Who remembers the 2017 decider?
Which VFL fan could forget? Port Melbourne won the premiership by four points at the Tigers’ expense when ex-Richmond AFL-lister Ben Lennon missed a long set shot after the final siren that would have secured the flag. The Borough have suffered 65- and 43-point losses to the Tigers in the time since, but Port Melbourne senior coach Gary Ayres might prefer to invoke the memory of 2017 in the lead-up to this match instead.
There has been an exodus of talent and experience at the Borough since then, but 10 players from that Grand Final side are still at the club – including now-regulars Harvey Hooper and Lachlan Waddell – who’ll bring valuable experience of a big occasion to the group. For Richmond, VFL skipper Steven Morris, Hugh Beasley and Connor Menadue are among the 10 Tigers who appeared in 2017 and are still at Punt Road today.
KEY STAT
The stoppage battle promises to be crucial in this result. Richmond’s advantage in clearances in its Round 2 victory was decisive, with Luke English (six clearances), Riley Collier-Dawkins (five) and Jacob Ballard (five) leading the Tigers to a 37-23 win on that measure. No Port Melbourne player recorded more than three clearances that day, but the Borough has more recently been torching opponents at stoppages in the finals.
Their midfield outplayed Geelong – the VFL’s top team for average clearances – with a 53-48 clearance advantage two weeks ago and then beat Footscray 63-42 last week, when eight Port Melbourne players won more than three clearances. Meanwhile, Richmond lost that count 45-52 to Essendon in their final and would be wary of the Borough’s depth, with the likes of Mitch Wooffindin, Mack Rivett and Matt Arnot just as capable in tight as the team’s bigger names.
SELECTION NEWS
Richmond’s match-winner from two weeks ago Toby Nankervis goes out of the qualifying-final line-up after being called up to the club’s AFL team. Young AFL-listed tall Noah Balta comes into the VFL side, with VFL-listers Hugh Beasley, Jacob Ballard, Tom Silvestro and Bailey Henderson added to an extended bench.
Port Melbourne may not need to make a change to its semi-final team, with only Ben Jolley, Dylan Conway, Callum Searle and Guy Dickson being named on its extended bench.

Noah Balta aiming to impress Tigers in VFL preliminary final
By Toby Prime
The Australian
September 14, 2019
Richmond’s fringe players will have one of their last opportunities to push for an AFL recall
when the Tigers meet Port Melbourne in Saturday’s VFL preliminary final.
Noah Balta returns for the clash at North Port Oval after being omitted from Richmond’s
qualifying final side against Brisbane last week.
The 2017 premiership pair of Kamdyn McIntosh and Dan Butler will also be looking to push their names up for promotion.
Richmond VFL coach Craig McRae said reserve players were “somewhat” waiting on an injury if they were going to crack a preliminary final or grand final berth.
“One of the strengths of our group and this year and in recent years is we have a lot of players playing well and in multiple positions,” McRae said.
“If you don’t play well, and someone else is playing extremely well underneath you, then it puts pressure on.
“That’s been something that has been happening for a few years now.
“It’s hard to change a winning line-up but (if) you perform really well at this level it certainly asks questions of match committee.”
Balta played in the Round 23 clash against Brisbane but was withdrawn from Richmond’s first VFL final against Essendon.
He has played 13 AFL games this year but just one since Round 13.
“He had a corkie that bled into his knee a bit,” McRae said.
“It was nothing major but just prevented him from training and obviously playing.”
Balta has been slated to play in defence but McRae said “we’ll see what the game needs knowing his last game with us … he dominated in the ruck and kicked goals.”
The winner will advance to the VFL grand final to face either Williamstown or Essendon on September 22 at Ikon Park.

Port wanting a dirty niggling close in contested game. Drag it down to a scrap. Think Swans mid-2000s.
We've got to match them on the inside and then hurt them on the outside. That was an ordinary quarter by us. Didn't win enough of the ball because we lost and are behind on every key contested stat badly.

I can't see us making any changes to the senior side based on what we've seen so far.
Balta has been playing defence so he's not going to come in as 2nd ruck.
Chol has been ordinary. Being pushed aside too easily. Not using his athleticism and leap.
Our mids have been well beaten in the contested footy and when we have the ball we've butchered it.

Run forward in a wave. CCJ tackled as he kicks and it's a point.

Would prefer a 4 goal handicap applied to us at the start of the game rather than the umps trying to even things up themselves. At least you know where you stand from the start.

I know there is a quarter to go and some might stand up but based on so far if anybody suggests any of these guys comes into the AFL team next week they will prove they either didn't watch or have no idea.

Menadue BOG.
I’d drop Ellis for him on Friday night as he’s not shy to take on the opposition.
-
Won the game at the start with 5 of the first 7 goals and the end with 6 of the last 7. That's 11 of the 14 we kicked. In between we were beaten in the contested footy and clearances.
Menadue and Eggy our best over 4 quarters.
Pickett got better and more influential again as the game went along. I don't see him being given a senior game though.
Balta's move into the ruck in the last was telling. Brought him and his huge hoof on ball and into the game. A couple of times he cleared Port's press which set up goals.
Chol was disappointing for mine. Didn't use his body often enough and had a number of nearly moments that he snags when he is 'on'.
Kmac won't get back into the side based on his game today. Better last quarter but nothing much to write home about in the first 3 qtrs.
CCJ battled. A mixed game from him.
After doing nothing all day, Moore and Markov came good in the last. Port tiring allowed us more space forward of centre.
Towner stood up as one of our VFL leaders with some smart play at the end and crashed bodies as ever including teammates lol. Left Morris sore which is hard to do.
Garth did well defensively but his kicking was ordinary.
Miller was okay in defence. Not prominent but our worst either.
Ross was well down on his pre-injury form. Likewise Naish was quiet apart from the two goals he kicked.
Our other first years showed their inexperience and rawness. RCD put his body in but he still lacks polish. Turner was quiet in a heavily contested game. English was in the game early but was quiet after that.
Butler, Weller & Aarts showed why they are on the way out.

Didn't watch it but it sounds like we beat them up a little haha

Geez Menadue is a gun at this level. BOG easily.
If there’s a change in the ruck and they’re basing it on today’s performance then it wil be balta. His follow up work after the ruck contest got the game on our terms in the second half. Pickett again influential in the last again but wasn’t getting it in the first 3.
Don’t see any changes to the afl side apart from possibly bringing in balta.

I like the look of CCJ if he keeps improving I can see a very bright future as he has a lot of attributes that I like.
-
How was Garthwaite and Miller.
-
Moore will be a player
-
Egg Mayo will be gun :shh
Pickett impacts when it most matters -game changer- and that's without AFL level fitness yet... :shh
Balta in for Slomo :shh
Wouldn't trade CCJ for Laird and Sloane...big future...:shh
If Chol starts holding his marks he'll be unstoppable -big if atm though :shh
Shame Menadue can't translate to AFL.... :shh :
RCD has all the tools but absolutely zero footy instinct- needs some intensive coaching over the off-season... :shh
McIntosh in for Bellis... :shh
Turner's injury seems to have killed all his early season momentum...still have very high hopes though :shh
Butler should be wearing the Navy Blue next year....of Melbourne Victory.. :shh
If we insist on another token upgrade from the VFL this year I'd nominate Beasley - though I quite like the look of young Street.. dunno what's happened to Thompson... :shh
Ultimately our superior fitness (and Pickett's superior skill) won the day and lot a blokes sprang to life as Port tired (most notably Markov, Moore, Balta & Ross)) - most of Port's goals were down to missed tackles or ineffective tackles that failed to stop their ball movement...this has been our biggest weakness in the one's this year as well and what I feel most stands between both sides and a flag double... :shh
How was Garthwaite and Miller.
Garthwaite was...er... "enigmatic"....Miller's second half probably the best I've seen him play so far...still a long way off though... :shh
Moore will be a player
Agree - too bad it won't be for us... :shh

I know there is a quarter to go and some might stand up but based on so far if anybody suggests any of these guys comes into the AFL team next week they will prove they either didn't watch or have no idea.
Menadue was pretty good, 25 and 3 goals. Not saying he should come in but that's solid footy

RCD tackled brilliantly today, kicking is shizen though

VFL Tigers rocket into Grand Final

“Believe”
That was the main thread of coach Craig McRae’s message to his players before, during and after their 26-point preliminary final win over Port Melbourne on Saturday afternoon.
Richmond VFL booked a place in the 2019 VFL Grand Final on the back of a six-goal-to-one final term at Adcon Stadium.
The Tigers were challenged ferociously by the Borough, who were fuelled by the raucous support of the pro-Port Melbourne crowd.
Richmond’s will and fight are akin to a seasoned heavyweight boxer - if they’re to be overcome, their opponent will need to fight right to the bell.
On their home deck, Port Melbourne started the game in roaring fashion kicking the first goal, before Richmond piled on four goals in quick succession on the back of its swarming defence.
The Tigers forced turnovers at will, looked razor sharp on the outside and efficient inside 50.
Connor Menadue carried his form from the qualifying final two weeks ago into the first quarter, electric with ball in hand and deadly in front of goal.
Menadue kicked the Tigers’ opener and added another before quarter time to cap off a stellar opening term.
The speedy onballer finished the game with three goals, 26 vital disposals and four tackles.
The Tigers’ speed was telling, be it defensively or with ball in hand, and Menadue scorched the North Port Oval turf with his slicing run-and-carry game.

Goals to Luke English, Mabior Chol and Mav Weller made it five for the Tigers, who led by 13 points at the first break.
A flashpoint in the second term swung the tide.
Jake Aarts collected Tom O’Sullivan while trying to spoil the Port Melbourne midfielder and the Borough took umbrage.
Aarts was reported and O’Sullivan took no further part in the game.
The collision added another sprinkle of spice to an already raging contest and it sparked Port Melbourne.
A four-goal burst handed the Borough a six-point lead and the locals were roaring.
Tempers spilled over once again as the teams split for half-time - no love lost and not a backward step would be taken in the frenetic second half.
The Tigers once again found themselves trailing at three-quarter time but the trust and belief that is etched in the Tigers’ hearts lifted them off the canvas and ignited a barnstorming comeback.
The third term was an armwrestle, with Port Melbourne jagging two goals to one as the Tigers squandered chances inside 50.
The assignment was set, if Richmond was to extend its campaign by another week, it would have to once again overcome a deficit, this time it was three points.
Richmond’s belief would be called upon as the Borough kicked the opening goal of the final term and once again it was unwavering.
The last quarter fightback was about moments, and a host of Tigers seized them when they arose.

Patrick Naish lit the fire.
As the ball was bubbling around inside Richmond’s forward 50 and nearly trickling over the boundary line, Jacob Townsend swooped and spotted up Naish all on his own.
The dashing young wingman with nerves of steel, speared through his set-shot and the Tigers’ belief started to swell.
Naish curled home the final goal of the game and elevated his standing with a damaging last quarter.
Oleg Markov - quiet by his standards for the first three quarters - shot to life with back-to-back goals in a minute to snatch the lead back for the Tigers.
The first a crumb and snap which gave Richmond a two-point lead, the next a set-shot which sailed over the goal umpire’s hat, extending the lead to eight points.
Richmond’s tall forwards weren’t having their greatest day until Chol and Callum Moore rose to prominence – quite literally.
After Markov secured the lead for Richmond, Moore dragged down one of the great finals marks, and more importantly slotted the goal.
Then up stepped Chol.
As Fraser Turner hacked the ball forward, Chol skipped goalside of his opponent and soccered through the sealing goal.
North Port Oval was now awash in a sea of Yellow and Black and the Tigers were home.
Marlion Pickett’s standing in the competition rose once again after his last quarter efforts.
Pickett seems to have a heightened sense of occasion and is serene amongst the chaos, and with the game in the balance, the smooth-moving midfielder’s influence on this contest was profound.
If he wasn’t slicing open the Borough, he was drifting back with the flight halting Port Melbourne’s thrusts forward.
Pickett makes players around him better and you get the feeling he won’t feel out of place as the stakes rise again next week.
English, Riley Collier-Dawkins and Jack Ross were in no way overawed by the occasion of their first preliminary final. The trio were ballistic in the clinches, setting the tone for others to follow.
Collier-Dawkins was combative, Ross took collateral damage, and English, whilst unassuming, willed himself from contest to contest.
The trust and belief in this group will hold it in good stead for what’s to come next.

McRae thrilled with Menadue and McIntosh's fight
Dinny Navaratnam

THE WAY Richmond is humming at the moment, there won't be many unforced changes for its preliminary final clash against Geelong, but Connor Menadue showed he shouldn't be forgotten with an excellent VFL performance on Saturday afternoon.
As the Tigers powered away to record a 26-point win over a brave Port Melbourne side at North Port Oval to see them make next Sunday's decider, Menadue was his side's best performer, collecting 26 disposals and booting three goals.
He showed his class with that performance and coach Craig McRae was full of praise after the game.
"He got us going with his goals and then we moved him back in the last quarter and he just looked assured down there. He just set the ground up for us," McRae said.
"I couldn't be more proud of him. He buys into the program as good as any and we're in this position because of guys like him."
The 22-year-old has lined up in six games for the senior side this season, with his most recent being in the round 13 loss to Adelaide.
Kamdyn McIntosh, who was part of Richmond's 2017 AFL flag outfit, ended up with 15 disposals.
McRae believed those numbers didn't reflect his output.
"This is probably the best Kamdyn's played with us in the last couple of games. He looked like an AFL player today I thought," McRae said.
"His contest … his experience, and we put him to a wing in the second half, and I thought he gave us something that we probably weren't getting in the first half. I think he looks ready for the AFL if something presents."
Noah Balta and Mabior Chol look the most likely talls to come in if needed but neither was overly influential.
"They both had moments. There were a couple of opportunities missed … they looked dangerous," McRae said.
In attack, Callum Moore stood up in the final term and showed his contested marking prowess.
"He was sick all week and didn't train. Early, he was just struggling to get through. I was just really proud of him because he just found a way and he just stuck at it, and his strengths came through when we needed it most," McRae said.
Rookie Jake Aarts could be rubbed out of the decider after a late hit on Port Melbourne's Tom O'Sullivan.
"He's somewhat pensive as you can imagine. We're all excited about what the future holds, but he doesn't know what his does," McRae said.
The VFL side will face the winner of the other preliminary final between Williamstown and Essendon on Sunday, after defeating Port Melbourne, 14.15 (99) to 10.13 (73).

Tigers roar into VFL grand final
Jon Pierik
The Age
15 September 2019
Richmond VFL captain Steven Morris expects to be fit for next weekend's grand final after a case of friendly fire left him gasping for air in the Tigers' match-winning final term against Port Melbourne on Saturday.
The Tigers booted 6.3 to 1.4 in the last quarter to turn a three-point deficit into a 26-point win, giving themselves a chance for redemption, having lost the 2017 grand final after the final siren and failing to win through last year despite being minor premiers.
Scores were locked at half-time but the Tigers booted 7.9 to 3.7 in the second half, confirming a 14.55 (99) to 10.13 (73) win at Adcon Stadium.
They will face the winner of Sunday's second preliminary final, between Essendon and Williamstown.
However, Jake Aarts faces a nervous wait for an incident that left Tom O'Sullivan in hospital.
Morris said he was proud of the manner in which his team had fought back, for the Borough - in a fiery second term - had booted four-straight goals.
"We have had our backs against the wall a number of times this year and we have been able to find ways to win, and today was no different," he said.
"They (Port Melbourne) played some sensational footy throughout the day but we were able to get the job done."
Morris was accidentally crunched in the ribs by teammate Jacob Townsend in the final term when both fought to win a loose ball against a Borough opponent.
"I am not the first one to get hit by Jacob Townsend. Hopefully, I pull up all right," he said.
Oleg Markov, with only four touches to three quarter-time, booted two goals in the final term. The Borough held their lead early but the Tigers got a run on, with Callum Moore, Mabior Chol and Connor Menadue all converting in quick succession. Menadue was brilliant early and found plenty of the ball in a sizzling first term.
Jarryd Blair led the Borough with 25 disposals while Eli Templeton had 24.

Tigers charge into VFL grand final
James Mottershead,
Herald Sun
15 September 2019
Richmond is through to its second VFL Grand Final in three years after coming out on top of an enthralling contest with Port Melbourne yesterday.
They say finals are won by winning the big moments and it was the Tigers’ youth who stood tallest when push came to shove.
Richmond jumped out of the blocks and took a three-goal lead early in the second quarter when Dan Butler kicked truly on the run, but a late Jake Aarts bump on Thomas O’Sullivan -who was going back with the flight of the ball and left him in hospital — lit a fire under the Borough.
They kicked six goals to three through the middle quarters with Eli Templeton leading the charge, kicking two majors and being influential with ball in hand.
Port Melbourne looked to have the momentum heading into the last quarter but after struggling for much of the week with illness, young forward Callum Moore took it over.
The 23-year-old took two massive contested marks and kicked a goal after he had been well held for most of the afternoon.
“It’s a good story because he was sick all week and didn’t train and he just tried to struggle to get through that,” Richmond VFL coach Craig McRae said.
“I’m really proud of him, he just found a way and he just stuck at it and his strengths came through when we needed them most.”
McRae said the message at three-quarter-time was clear — play the 120 minutes.
“It’s a credit to this group that we have been able to win all our close games all year, we haven’t lost one,” he said.
“We’ve been mentioning for a while about playing the minutes.
“No one has been able to go with us for 120 minutes all year.”
Connor Menadue was best-on-ground for Richmond, starting across half forward where he kicked two goals before steadying the ship behind the ball in the last quarter.
“Really proud of Connor. He got us going with his goals and then we moved him back in the last quarter and he just looked assured,” he said.
“I couldn’t be more proud of him, we’re in this position because of guys like him.”
The preliminary final win means Richmond will play either Essendon or Williamstown in next weekend’s grand final, with McRae quick to remind his players there is “another 120-minutes to go”.
“It’s pretty cool (being in another grand final). I said to the guys before they don’t come around too often and we still have a lot of work to do,” he said.
“Celebrate the moment and enjoy it for what it is but there is another 120 minutes to go.
“This group has something special about it.”
