Title: What do we need for 2020 and beyond to bolster our list?
Post by: one-eyed on October 01, 2019, 04:53:34 AM
What does your club need for 2020 and beyond to bolster its list?

Dan Batten and Al Paton
Herald Sun
1 Oct 2019

RICHMOND

Draft picks: 19, 38, 39 (via Gold Coast), 72 (via Geelong), 74, 92

Delistings/retirements: Shaun Grigg, Mav Weller (retired)

What they need: What could possibly make this team better? You would be hard pressed to find a weakness in the well-oiled Tiger machine, and they got some valuable games into youngsters in the first half of the year. A hard-running wingman may be on the wish list.

Who they are chasing: After landing mega recruit Tom Lynch last year, the Tigers aren't likely to be big players this trade period.

Who will they lose: Brandon Ellis has been offered a lucrative long-term deal to join his namesake Corey at the Suns, and is set to take it. Small forward Dan Butler was in and out of the side this year and may look for greater opportunity at a new club. After losing depth players like Ellis, Anthony Miles and Sam Lloyd last year, players like Butler and Connor Menadue might face a similar fate. Kamdyn McIntosh isn’t going anywhere.

Should get an end of 1st rounder for B Ellis IMO, so end up with about 4 picks in the top 45.

Handful of players to delist also, lots of talent to get back into the side. Rance, Graham, Stack, Ross, RCD to debut, CCJ to keep developing, Chol + Balta.

Just keep drafting good kids, no need to chase FA's or trade players in I think.

Wonder if we can get a mid second round for Butler then deal with Gold Coast giving them Menadue for a swap of the Butler pick and their gifted front of second round draft pick

Would give us 19, 20 (Ellis compo pick) and 21

I like your creativity, but Menadue + Butler are not worth pick 21 I'm afraid. Menadue is worth a token pick (4th round) and Butler I'd be surprised if he's anything more than late 2nd or early 3rd round.

Yeah, I think we consolidate our compensatory draft picks the we receive in return for the inevitable departure of some fringe players.

You'd expect Butler, Kmac, and maybe Menadue, or Moore to go (as well as Ellis)

So we'll get back 2nd - 4th rounders.

Id even consider on trading them for picks in next years draft to make sure we can put some Draft points in the bank for MRjr.

Keep K Mac.  He's in our top 25 players.  We're going to get injuries again.  I'd keep Butler too just quietly.  Higgo may not come back the same who knows.

Ellis is 💯% replaceable

I wouldn't trade in anyone.
Trade out a couple maybe

Yep, I would also keep Butler unless we get a decent trade offer for him / if he'll stay with limited opportunities.

KMac too.

Next.

But we can trade picks from this year for picks from next.

And we may need pick points to make sure we get him.

Well, if we get an end 1st rounder for B Ellis, we should have about 4 in the top 45, so just back the rest after that and any picks we trade in (for Butler etc) for next year.

Plough says another big-bodied midfielder that wins clearances as stoppage-work is one area we can improve.

Terry Wallace's List Analysis - Richmond

Australian football Hall of Famer Terry Wallace has run his eye over Richmond’s list and believes they will still be the team to beat in 2020.

The Tigers are coming off a 12-win streak, culminating in a victory in the 2019 AFL Grand Final, destroying the Giants by 89 points.

Wallace however feels they could get even better next season.

“The other clubs should be very scared. After a massive Grand Final victory, two premierships in three years, there’s no doubt in my mind they’ve been the best team comfortably over that period of time,” he told Telstra AFL Trade Radio.

“I’m suggesting that there is no reason why this should change at all. With players to return or improve, such as Alex Rance, Jack Graham, Jack Higgins, Marlion Pickett, Jack Ross and Sydney Stack, plus the age profile of the squad, with 15 of their best 18 between the ages of 24 and 31, they’re totally primed.

“Sometimes you see a flag won and you see it won by an aging group and you say they got there, but can they hang in. The Tiger outfit age-wise are absolutely on top of their game.

“This team has got eight All-Australians in it. They’ve got the best game plan and structures which nobody has been able to get close to replicating, and then they’ve got the best development program which saw their VFL team win a premiership this year as well.

“The chase is on, but the closing pack is a fair bit behind as far as I am concerned. The other thing about the Tigers is they also own the MCG.”

Richmond was ranked dead last for clearances in 2019 and Wallace feels it is their one weak point.

“To me, their stoppage work wasn’t great, so they’ll need a Pickett or a Graham or a Ross to add more depth in that area of the ground,” he said.

“All I’m saying is the one area over the year that hasn’t been strong is the clearance factor. You’re always looking for something and another strong, big-bodied midfielder, especially if you want to play Dustin Martin forward.”

Agree with Wallace, best Midfielder we can get.  Gotta keep that engine room going as some of the boys are getting older.

Now with Rance retiring we will have some cap space going forward. We will also start to need to replace aging stars as they retire . ie Houli and Cotch etc.

Free Agency is where we look now IMO. My first two targets would be:

Sam Taylor GWS was showing excellent signs as a key defender and GWS wont have any cap space. Taylor to come in as a long term key defender makes sense.

Hunter Clark from St Kilda. I think he is going to be an excellent player and would be the perfect long term Bachar Houli replacement at Half Back. Clark also supported the us his whole life so he would be champing at the bit to get to Punt Road and get out of Moorabbin.
