We got the first clearance forward but a poor short pass causes a turnover to allow North to go forward.
First goal to North from a defensive stoppage.
0 - 6
-
Conti is a gun!
-
Conti intercepts in the centre. Runs and bounces and a 1-2 with stuff gets it back and has a ping from 30 on the run but misses.
1 - 6
-
Ill-disciplined. Frees allow North to get to their F50. One thing to fly the flag but you don't push someone in the back in front of the ump after giving away a free. 50m penalty gifts north their second.
We get the immediate centre clearance but Brennan ping from 40 misses.
2 - 12
-
We are playing ok. Just need to finish.
-
Good tackle at HF allow Brennan to kick long to the hot spot. Bernardi gathers front and square but she misses too.
3 - 12
The difference so far is footskills.
-
Conti is a gun!
Yes and I like Monaghan too. She’s tough as nails
The rest of them must learn how to handpass.
Brennan needs to lift.
Fredricks :banghead
-
Getting pounded in the date by the umps as usual. 10 frees to 1 and about 9 our way not paid

Conti 4 ... our best and most effective by far.
Brennan 3

Fredricks :banghead
Yep, Monaghan is cracking in. Agree that Fredricks is ineffectual.
I know a lot of folks on here tip on it, but I reckon the AFLW is fairly entertaining.
-
Getting pounded in the date by the umps as usual. 10 frees to 1 and about 9 our way not paid
Watching on tv only but Most of them I would’ve paid. Didn’t see many that didn’t deserve it
Sloppy tackling but I do like how the girls are cracking in.
-
Turnover in defensive half gives North their 3rd.
3 - 19
-
Being exposed structurally. Too many ballwatching.
3 - 25
-
Umpires are stuffen clueless
-
That's not sliding in. Richmond player was pushed. Umps are as terrible as us.
Another gift!
3 - 32
-
Getting smashed now after a competitive first quarter
-
Put Brennan in the backline u halfwit coach
-
One-way traffic as feared.
3 - 44

Wait until Ramps sees this mess
-
Don’t mind the red head Moland? I think her name is.
Our mids are rubbish. North girls look really fit and have great system and ball movement.
Brennan :banghead
Fredricks :banghead :banghead
-
We actually get a free and 50. Our first inside F50 for the quarter. Ends up with Brennan just inside 50 who chips to Jacques 30 out. So some bizarre reasons hands back to Brennan 1m away who has to quickly snap and it's off hands for a point.

And pee off 14 also

and while we are at it pee off Sheehan and Hunter
-
:lol
I’ve got to say that number 7 for the kangas is a gun
The north girls are just playing good footy have good spread and are spotting up players all over the field. Our girls have a long way to go as we are way off the pace.
I think they’ve tripled our marks.

That clearance was the first time we've put a clean passage of possession together in our 3 games so far.

We get it out the back. Wakefield run and bounces to inside 50 but her kick to stuff is on her head and North clear temporarily.

Disagree. She is a bit raw but she is one of the most athletically gifted players we have. She gets to contests and breaks lines.
Will be a good player I reckon.
-
I like 43. I don’t know her name but she looks like she wants the footy.

Top contested pack mark by Wakefield 30 out. Misses the set shot though.

-
Jacques hits up Brancatisano 40 out. Tries to find Brennan but can't and North clear.
North get it forward where we get pinged for HTB in front of their goal.
17 - 63
-
Another sucked in ump decision gifts North a goal. The North forward pulled it in.
We get it forward from the centre bounce. A chase down by North means we only get a point.
18 - 70
-
I like the look of Jacques. She goes in and works hard.
The fat number 7 needs to go. She’s no good.
-
Brennan to Campbell just inside F50. Goes long and Edmonds claims the mark in the pack and it's paid. Indecision again at taking the shot means it's a rushed kick and misses.
19 - 70
-
Great tackle by Conti in the middle wins the HTB free. Ends up with Brancatisano who finds Brennan 30 out. Misses as well.
Once again our goalkicking is poor.

Your probably right. I may have gone too early she has done some ok things in the last.
-
Another free in front of the sticks to North. It was there but half their goals have come from free kicks.
20 - 76
-
The commentator said that the no 7 (Riddell i think) from the kangas got overlooked in the draft.
Wow.
She’s a million times better than any of our girls maybe Conti is the closest and clearly our best player.
I wouldn’t be complaining about the umps. We’ve got plenty of rubbish players playing in our team and representing the jumper that clearly aren’t even close to being at the required level.
A lot of them that I saw play today can’t even execute a proper handpass let alone kick the footy.
We seem lost and have no discernible game plan are not fit enough to run both ways especially the midfield group. Very disappointing effort and it’s really unacceptable to be this uncompetitive and below standard. The game was over at by the second quarter.
Very disappointing from our club considering we’ve supposedly have been building this team in some bunker for over 2 years.
We need players that can win their own footy especially in the middle.
-
Final Score
Richmond 0.3 0.4 2.5 2.8-20
North Melb. 2.0 7.2 9.3 12.4-76
Goals: stuff, Brennan.
Outclassed by a North side that's at another level across the board in terms of team structures and cohesion, leg speed and spread, and skills and finishing in front of goal. The Roos were/are rated premiership favourites.
3 quarters of effort and one poor non-competitive quarter (second). The 3rd quarter was obviously our best.
Conti and Campbell our best IMO.
Set shot goalkicking is still poor. Missed about half-a-dozen gettable chances. Bad kicking is bad footy.
While the umpiring is ordinary, we give away too many silly undisciplined frees often being too overzealous which costs us goals against.

--------------------------------------------------------
Richmond has fallen to North Melbourne by 56 points on Sunday afternoon at Ikon Park.
The Tigers were competitive in the first term but were unable to capitalise on their early opportunities, kicking three behinds.
A second-quarter burst did most of the damage for the Roos, recording 13 inside-50s to just one and piling on five goals in the 12.4 (76) to 2.8 (20) win in hot conditions.
In the third quarter, Sabrina stuff broke through to kick Richmond's first goal in style, plucking the ball out of the ruck in a contest against Vivien Saad on the goal-line and booting it backwards over her head.
Katie Brennan (14 disposals, 1.2) followed just minutes later, capitalising on Richmond's sudden control over the football with a low sliding shot after dancing around an opponent, and the Tigers ended up equalising the third term.
But North only let the foot off the pedal somewhat, still booting an impressive five goals in the second half.
For the Tigers, hard-nosed midfielder Grace Campbell's impressive first season continued with 11 disposals, 10 tackles and a blood nose, while Monique Conti (18 and six) looked a class above out of the stoppages.
Phoebe Monahan had 12 disposals and five marks, while Gabby Seymour had a few nice intercepting moments.
Say what?
"It took us until after half-time to get the game the way we wanted it. I think the third quarter showed glimpses of the type of game we can play and the side we're going to become … Tim Livingstone (general manager of football) sat in our box today and had a chat to him and 'Balmey' (Neil Balme), and he was reminding me of what it looked like in 2010 with 'Dimma' (Damien Hardwick's first year in charge of the AFL side). I think they had their first win in round nine or ten." – Richmond coach Tom Hunter

Roos run riot against inexperienced Tigers
Roy Ward
The Age
24 February 2020
Roos skipper Emma Kearney was outstanding along with midfielder Ashleigh Riddell as their side dominated across every part of the ground, almost doubling the Tigers in effective disposals and several other key statistics.
Roos coach Scott Gowens said his side took a step forward in making such a strong start including a five-goal-to-nothing second term.
"You could see it coming and I felt this week we could do it a bit longer and got 80 per cent of the first half right," Gowans said.
"We got a bit of a run from Richmond's turnovers and that’s the main thing in getting opportunities to go forward."
Richmond's big signings Katie Brennan, Sabrina stuff and Monique Conti have faced some criticism due to their side's winless start.
But the Tigers found something after the break as they started to get more from their midfield and managed to start pushing the ball into attack.
stuff was the beneficiary as she out-bodied Vivien Saad from a ball-up in Richmond's goal square, then executed an overhead snap with her back to goal to break the Tigers goal drought.
Brennan followed up with a classy, running goal soon after which saw her kick bounce just past the defender on the goal line.
"I think the third quarter showed glimpses of the football we want to play and the side we hope to become," Hunter said.
"For us it's about getting that consistency across the game."
Gowans liked the way his side reacted at three-quarter time to Richmond's improved showing as they were comfortably in control in the final term.
The Roos want to challenge for the AFLW premiership but whether they are good enough remains to be seen.
"I feel like we still have a step to go with a few areas of our game and when we get that right, then who knows," Gowans said.
"We aren't quite there yet, but we are a lot closer than we were last week."
stuff does a De Vanna
Richmond star Sabrina stuff was struggling for chances to score but she took her moment in the third term from a ball-up in her side's attacking goal square. Pulling in the ball with her back to goal, she powered a bicycle kick over her shoulder and into the goals. It was a finish that would have made Matildas star Lisa De Vanna proud and should be a goal of the year candidate.
Riddell untouchable
North Melbourne midfielder Ashleigh Riddell was untouchable in the first half notching up 17 of 21 possessions as the Kangaroos built a 40-minute lead.
Riddell was finding the ball in all areas and benefiting from extra possessions and field position due to her side's defensive pressure.
Roars despite margin
For all Richmond's struggles in the first half, they still had their cheer squad and supporters on side with the Tigers faithful gathered around their team's tunnel and roaring for them as they went in at half time down 40 points. The Tigers partly repaid that faith with a much more competitive second half.

Dimma’s phone call to struggling Brennan
Sam Landsberger
Herald Sun
24 February 2020
Richmond premiership coach Damien Hardwick reached out to Katie Brennan last week as the Tigers wrapped their arms around their struggling AFLW captain.
Hardwick called Brennan after the postergirl’s underwhelming start to the season was dissected on the back of her plunging down Champion Data’s player rankings.
Brennan, 27, kicked one goal from 14 disposals on Sunday as premiership fancy North Melbourne smashed the Tigers by 50 points.
“It certainly was a difficult week (for Brennan), but we wrap our arms around Katie,” coach Tom Hunter said.
“That’s just internally in terms of the girls and the players and the staff, but also the wider footy club.
“Dimma touches base with her, Livo (football performance boss Tim Livingstone) touches base with her. We really want to make sure she feels really well supported and I thought she played her role today.”
Former Western Bulldogs co-captain Ellie Blackburn said Brennan had slipped and urged the Tigers to return her to attack.
“Richmond probably haven’t got the most out of her as what they would’ve liked to,” Blackburn said.
The Tigers have reprogrammed Brennan into a midfielder but Blackburn said she’s “the best hit-up forward in the competition”.
Tiger teammate Phoebe Monahan said: “We love Katie. She’s a great leader for the club on and off the field and we’ll support her through thick and thin.”
Roos coach Scott Gowan was “super worried” that Brennan would bounce back.
“We mentioned it before the game,” Gowan said.
“From the perspective of making sure she’s manned up, not letting her get running chains of footy, if she got a possession not let her double-up and get the hands back, that sort of thing.
“From a football lover I hope she just remembers she is a superstar, and it will turn for her at some stage.”
The Tigers are 0-3 but football manager Neil Balme and Livingstone, who sat in the coach’s box on Sunday, reminded Hunter that Hardwick took until Round 10 to get his first victory back in 2010.
“Livo’s looking at it and going, ‘Yep, this is what we were doing at that time, this is what you’re doing’ and noting similarities,” he said.
“We’d like to get a win this season, because Round 10 for us might be next year. We’ll continue to encourage the girls.”
Gowan was happy with the current eight-round season – even though three losses means missing finals – but called on the AFL to shift the season out of summer when it expands.
“It would be ideal to marry the VFLW up with AFLW, so players that aren’t selected get an opportunity to play (VFLW) and show their worth,” he said.
“Ideally, if we could go a little bit later just to get the heat (down).”

Hardwick, Tigers rally around AFLW captain Brennan
Roy Ward
The Age
24 February 2020
Hardwick and football performance general manager Tim Livingstone both reached out to Brennan while Livingstone and senior advisor Neil Balme spent Sunday in the coaches box.
Tigers coach Tom Hunter said Brennan was standing up to the critics with the support of her club.
"It certainly was a difficult week but we wrap our arms around Katie internally in terms of the girls and the staff and also the wider footy club as 'Dimma' touches base with her, Livo touches base with her - we want her to feel well supported," Hunter said.
"I thought she played her role today, had a little more opportunity to go forward and impact there, I thought we had the balance right as a midfielder and forward."
Hunter said Brennan was regularly around the club and worked with coaches from both teams.
"Katie is always in and around the club so she has great relationships with everyone in the men's department," Hunter said.
"It's a footy department that does both men's and women's. It's a single entity."
Brennan has moved forward and midfield roles this season and Hunter said that balance was still being defined.
"We want to support her through the midfield, we know she is a quality player around the football so we will give her every chance to be successful there, but also balance that out with roles up forward or on the wing," Hunter said.
North Melbourne coach Scott Gowans said his side had paid special attention to Brennan pre-game as he expected her to lift.
Gowans recalled Brennan playing both midfield and forward roles at VFL level before adopting a more attacking role during her time in AFLW.
"We mentioned it before the game, from my experience with Katie Brennan I was super worried," Gowans said.
"I've been on the end of a few Katie Brennan thrashings over the years so we mentioned it in terms of making sure she was manned up, not letting her get into some running chains of footy and get double-up possessions.
"From being a football lover, I hope she remembers she is a superstar and it will turn for her at some stage."
On the question of Richmond's lack of wins so far, Hunter said Balme and Livingstone saw similarities in the way the Tigers rebuilt their men's side.
"Livingstone sat in our box today and I had a chat with him and Balmey and he was reminding me how it looked in 2010 when they had their first win in round nine or 10," Hunter said.
"Livo is looking at it and noting similarities between how they were doing things and we are doing things. We'd like to get a win this season as round 10 for us might be next season."

The quality is horrendous
AFLW made a massive error diluting the talent pool so fast , and it is impacting significantly on the product
When the wave of current juniors come through there will be a huge increase in the quality of the football being played

Recruit quality girls that have decent skill and know how to play and win ball would be a start
Unfortunately our recruiters liked some names instead of looking for talent.

Yes one day the standard might just reach the giddy heights of the VFL reserves...:shh

Argh yes N0rt, who struggled to win a game in their first season.
Agree with Damo re the talent pool. Spot on there
And I wish newspapers would report accurately. Balmey did not sit in the coaches box yesterday. He sat in the Gardiner stand a few rows from me. Certainly went to the rooms at HT and after the game but sitting on the coaches box? Nope
Thought the 1st are was the best we've played in our 3 games. Just poor conversion
2nd are was the worst we've played = game over. 3rd was better, by the 4th both sides were cooked.
And I said so many times but the standard of umpiring is diabolical. It certainly doesnt help the standard of the actual games. They were disgraceful yesterday. Wouldn't have made a difference to the result but Suresh they were pathetic the umps

I am definitely disappointed considering how vocal the club was voicing their disappointment on not being given an AFLW license earlier and now fronting up with this. I always expected teething problems but the blow outs are bad. I feel like the club could have pushed harder to try and get talent from women’s rugby, basketball and soccer because some of the players just have horrible field positioning and movement.
-
The results are showing why the Club was vocal in its disappointment in not getting an original AFLW licence. We're effectively an expansion club this year. It's not unexpected to have a poor first season.
As an aside, I think our future home games should be moved to Punt Rd. Fair enough hosting our first ever match at the greater capacity of Princes Park but a crowd of just over 3,000 against North means we can host AFLW games at our home ground that our girls train on.

When the wave of current juniors come through there will be a huge increase in the quality of the football being played
Yes one day the standard might just reach the giddy heights of the VFL reserves...:shh
No chance it will be anywhere near that good

Doubt very much the AFL will move the games

I’ve got to agree that all home games should be played at punt rd.
If it’s a lock out so be it. Atleast the girls would have a home ground advantage and supporters that want to go won’t have to travel to princess park. Make it a fortress.
I think whoever made that decision to move our home games there got it completely wrong.

Brennan and Conti cant do much when most of the others are struggling at the level.
The quality is horrendous
AFLW made a massive error diluting the talent pool so fast , and it is impacting significantly on the product
When the wave of current juniors come through there will be a huge increase in the quality of the football being played
Didn’t seem to effect North did it?
Recruit quality girls that have decent skill and know how to play and win ball would be a start
Unfortunately our recruiters liked some names instead of looking for talent.

Wasn’t their first season last year?
Didn’t they win their first 4 games?
Didn’t they finish third on the ladder?
Maybe they just did a better job at recruiting don’t you think?

Imagine losing 2 games in one season and someone spinning that as “couldn’t win a game”

N0rt going into last season were favourites to win the comp. They failed to play finals with their list, deemed by some as the best in the comp. When they lost they lost badly not necessarily on the scoreboard but how they played
Much stronger talent pool in N0rt's first season as there had been a gap of 2 years form the start of AFLW. So the talent available had a chance to restock.
4 new teams this season and the talent is spread thinner. Interestingly one of our best talents from the our VFLW program (academy) got drafted by Carlton - Grace Egan. Will admit we stuffed here, we could matches their bid but chose not to, we went Molan instead and IMV that was a bad call

WP. It seems you won’t concede that we have completely botched the girls team.
Terrible recruiting and Terrible choice to play home games at Carlscums home ground.
Can’t you see they have totally botched the project they had ample time to get right?
I mean Who would want to go to princess park for home matches? If it’s good enough to play at punt road for the reserves I can’t see why the girls can’t play there.

Club has no choice about the games being Princes Park, AFL directive....
Club can only recruit under the rules. 4 new teams meant the talent pool was stretched. Like AFL all teams had to take part on the draft, so this time round it was 14 teams not 10 or 8 like previously.
As I said IMV they got it wrong with not matching Carlton's bid for Egan, so yep that's a clear recruiting miss. Reckon our later picks look good (Sasonetti in particular). Brennan, Conti, Bernaardi are gun players. Monahan is a very good player too
stuff is the best contested mark in the AFLW and is IMHO being played out of position. Plonk her in the goal square and get her to smash packs. Pinch hitting in the ruck was smart, it worked but clearly she cannot sustain it.
I appreciate that some of our VFLW girls are struggling with the tempo especially against seasoned opposition but they will get better. Stahl & Jacques are just 2 that spring to mind immediately.
Wakefield outside of being a sensational footy story, has been outstanding.
I've no doubt we will follow the pattern of other club's after season 1 and turn over the list. That's a given.
This was always going to be tough season, we are coming from a long way back compared to the starting 8 teams and even the 2nd year teams.
Am I disappointed with the results so far? Yes I am to a degree, in that we should have beaten GC. But am I going to call for everyone to be sacked and walk away from our newest team, bag them for the sake of it And apply a "sky is falling" mentality" Nope, in for the long haul just like the Club is. Will be patient just like we were with Dimma in his early days :gotigers
