Out: Lauren Tesoriero (general soreness)  :lol

Let’s be honest, She really is too fat. It’s embarrassing that there isn’t enough fit skillful woman that you can be pick from. Hopefully that will change in the future. I’m sure it will.

Unfortunately we aren’t allowed to know the weight of any girl playing AFLW.  :rollin

Hunter urges AFLW Tigers to utilise strengths

KIERAN ILES
Bendigo Advertiser
28 Feb 2020

RICHMOND AFLW coach Tom Hunter will urge his side to play with more freedom as the Tigers aim to notch their first win in the national competition in Bendigo on Saturday.

The Tigers clash at the QEO against Geelong will pit a pair of sides without a victory this season.

Although Hunter is expecting a tough challenge against the Cats, whose three losses this season have been against respective conference leaders Fremantle (3-0) and Brisbane (2-0-1) and reigning premiers Adelaide (2-1), his message to players this week has focused on enjoyment and positivity.

"It's about extending our patches of play and doing the things that we want to do for a little bit longer," Hunter said.

"This week the focus will be just to play and do the things you are good at.

"All these girls have been given the opportunity to play AFLW because they bring something special and something unique in their strengths, so we just want to see them at their best.

"If we get more of our girls doing the things they are really good at collectively, the way we play will change and we will be in the game that little bit longer."

Hunter acknowledged it would be a big occasion for homegrown Tigers Kodi Jacques and Grace Campbell and was pleased with what each of the former Bendigonians brought to the Tigers line-up.

"They certainly bring a hard-edge," he said.

"Grace is so good in the contest, with her ability to defend an opponent or tackle, or win the ball. She is almost unlike anyone else in the AFLW the way she attacks the contest.

"Kodi again is that hard-edge around the contest, but with finesse and some great skills. She is real classy player with the ball in hands.

"We want her to be getting the ball on the outside and kicking it to our forward's advantage, and we want her getting the ball off Cambo in the middle."

As one of four expansion clubs this season, Hunter acknowledged his side was a work in progress, but was nevertheless pleased with the development so far.

"We're the youngest side in the AFLW - we drafted nine girls from the NAB league, so we are well aware of where we are," he said.

"While the expectations are coming externally, internally we know what we need to do and what success looks like for us.

"The first part of it will be winning quarters, and then winning halves and games, but we think we are building nicely and trending in the right direction."

Hunter gave full backing to the move to play an AFLW fixture in Bendigo.

"We have good record there through the VFLW and its part of our Next Generation Academy region, so we can't wait to get up there," he said.

"We love playing at the ground - such a picturesque ground to play on, but one we play really well.

"We look forward to playing in front of what we hope is a fantastic turnout of Tiger supporters."

Another big loss today needs to result in some player sackings. The coach should go also as well as Sheahan. Sackings need to be the order of the day if they get flogged again today.

So clearly and correct me if l am wrong but you think we should be plsying finals this year and should have recruited to that? Rather than building a team from scratch for long term success?

You do know we are the youngest most inexperienced team in the comp?

I find it strange Ramps, that you have so much angst when you never rated the comp.

As ordinary as we are, the umpiring is still woeful. Two 50m penalties that weren't there that gifted Geelong two goals  ::).

Our mids lack speed especially on the spread. The opposition always are getting far more numbers to the ball. Conti can't win it on her own. That's why we get trapped in our defensive half and can't get it forward. Eventually the dam wall breaks when the opposition are getting 4 times as many inside F50s.

I think they had plenty of time to recruit better players.
Other clubs gave come into the comp this year and they are better than us. Geelong hasnt fired a shot but theyre smashing us today.

I dont rate the comp but these girls are wearing our jumper. They represent our club which is a famous club with a storied history. This level of performance is therefore unacceptable.

If they want to represent our club they need to be better. At the moment this is dismal and the Richmond brand is being tarnished. I primarily blame sheahan hunter and the recruiting officer for this mess.

Cats get first victory for the season against improving, but winless, Tigers

Marc McGowan
womens.afl
29 Feb 2020

A BLISTERING six-goal second quarter has propelled Geelong to its first victory of the season, leaving vanquished opponent Richmond as the sole winless team in conference A.

The Cats posted their highest AFLW tally of 38 points only last week, but they comfortably surpassed that by half-time against the Tigers at Bendigo's sun-drenched Queen Elizabeth Oval.

Midfielder Olivia Purcell (20 disposals) was outstanding during that period, along with the tenacious Amy McDonald (12, five tackles) and strong-marking forward Phoebe McWilliams (13).

They also added the first two majors of the third term to establish a game-high 41-point buffer, but had to withstand an unlikely Richmond comeback before winning 10.7 (67) to 7.3 (45).

The aggregate tally between the two sides fell just short of the AFLW record, owned by Adelaide and Collingwood, which combined for a score of 116 points in the final round of 2017.

Sabrina stuff's long goal with 15 seconds left in the third quarter was the Tigers' fourth on the trot and slashed the margin to only 18 points at the final break.

Katie Brennan was integral in Richmond's revival – setting up teammate Courtney Wakefield's third major – but her clash with Cat Jordan Ivy on the three-quarter time siren proved telling.

Brennan laid motionless on the ground after the incident and never returned, watching as Julia Crocket-Grills, another good performer, dribbled through the sealing goal.

The Tigers' dashing dual-sport star Monique Conti was brilliant from the get-go and arguably best afield, gathering five possessions by midway through the opening quarter and 28 in total.

However, Geelong overwhelmed Richmond with an army of contributors, with Rocky Cranston (15, two goals) and gun defender Meg McDonald (16, six marks) turning it on from opposite ends.

A much better effort and style of footy today in the 1st, 3rd and 4th quarters and our set shot finishing in front of the sticks was vastly improved. It's still our 2nd quarters that we seem to fall away badly in though.

Conti is a gun but as the stats show we are too dependent on too few. She had as many possies as our bottom six. Something we can't do anything about now until the offseason and the next trade/draft period. We need to find more ballwinning and running mids before 2021.

Improved effort today but a lot of losses ahead for this list.

Despite the horrendous umpiring that did have significant impact on the game. Sick of talking about how bad the umpiring is

Was a much improved  performance

The 3rd qtr was special, in that they could have got blown away but they came out and showed what they can do.

Conti is a star

Ditto Courtney Wakefield and Phoebe Monahan

And BTW

Re-sign Courtney NOW

We need more quality mids.

Besides Conti (who is a clearly our best by a mile), who have we got?

None of our other midfielders seem good enough and can’t execute basic skill nor can they win their own ball.

Besides that I think Monaghan is a very good player for us.
Campbell looks like she’s got something but needs to work harder.
Molan looks ok but needs to kick it more often.
Jacques I would persist with she has a go.
Brennan needs to get involved more as she’s got the goods but doesn’t do enough nor does she stamp her influence on a match.
Wakefield is a good forward for us.

Geelong claim first AFLW win as Brennan downed by high hit

Roy Ward

Geelong 10.7 (67) def. Richmond 7.3 (45)

The goals flowed and Geelong claimed their first win of the AFLW season beating Richmond at Queen Elizabeth Oval, Bendigo on Saturday.

The Cats and Tigers put on a high-scoring game with 17 goals and plenty of inside-50s but it was the second-year Cats who took their chances, especially in the second term where they scored 35 points to build a match-winning lead.

While the Cats' 22-point win was impressive, there will be attention on a high tackle on Richmond skipper Katie Brennan late in the third term from Cats midfielder Jordan Ivey which forced Brennan off for the final term although she was walking around post game.

Brennan was first to get low and go for the football and Ivey's late arrival saw her turn her body side on and make contact with Brennan's head. It was reckless at best.

Last round the win-less Tigers made big improvements in the second half and they were again firing in the late third term kicking the last four goals to cut the margin to 18 points at three-quarter time but they would get no closer.

The Cats had plenty of winners led by Olivia Purcell (20 possessions, one goal), Meghan McDonald (16 possessions) and key forward Rochelle Cranston (15 possessions, two goals).

While the Cats were potent in attack with 33 inside-50s to 18 for the Tigers, Richmond star midfielder Monique Conti (28 possessions, five tackles) was again exceptional with some excellent creative play while rebounding defender Renae Monahan had 20 possessions and was constantly around the ball.

Tigers key forward Courtney Wakefield kicked three goals and was a force when the ball was in the forward line.

Richmond's hopes of a first win are fast running out but they are making improvement while the Cats will aim to take the confidence from this win and continue to attack the goals in their remaining match-ups.

BRENNAN DOWNED

With Richmond firing in the third term, Geelong's Jordan Ivey went into a contest with Richmond captain Katie Brennan and appeared to get the Tigers star high on the head as she had already gone low to get the football. Ivey will likely be cited for the contact by the match review panel. Brennan didn’t not return after medical staff opted to sit her out.

HOME TOWN GOAL

Bendigo product Kodi Jacques has shown some good signs for the Tigers in her first AFLW season and she snapped a lovely goal in the third term on Saturday and the Bendigo Thunder product lapped up the moment in her home town.

FIRST TIME GOAL

Geelong debutant Anna Teague kicked a goal in her first game after a 50-metre penalty sent her deep into the forward line in the second term, Cats midfielder Renae Garing also kicked her first AFLW goal after 12 games when she bagged a major.

Haven't watched the replay but at the game Brennan was very good, actually brillaint in the 3rd. Missed her big time in the last.

Campbell did some good things but let herself down with poor disposals and giving away silly frees in the last

I wasn’t there as I watched it on tv.
Granted Campbell was a little wayward and clumsy but she’s constantly involved fighting for possession or harassing opposition players for four quarters.

Brennan didn’t get a touch in the first quarter.
Did little in the second quarter (1 centre clearance) when we were getting smashed out of the middle.
Was very good (more please) in the third quarter until she was smashed in the final minute.

Can’t see how she was in our best players or even better than Campbell who didn’t stop fighting for four quarters.

Personally I’d put her (Brennan) CHB and put Monaghan in the middle as she’s a natural ball winner.

Our ruck no. 11 is no good. Her taps go nowhere and she’s ineffective around the ground.
Our defenders are poor. No 15 is terrible.

Hunter pleased by Tigers’ progress

By Grace Kalac
AFL Media

Richmond AFLW coach Tom Hunter was encouraged by the Tigers' best performance to date on Saturday afternoon at Queen Elizabeth Oval, Bendigo.

Despite the 22-point loss to Geelong, Richmond notched up its highest ever score and booted more goals in just two quarters than the previous three weeks combined.

“Bar our second quarter, it really looked like the way we wanted to play, there were more patches, more consistency,” Hunter said post-match.

“They looked awesome when they took the game on and just played footy, and that was all we asked of them this week, to play the game.

“It really stood out that that’s the type of footy we can play.”

Hunter conceded the Tigers got “beaten around the ball” in the second quarter as the Cats piled on six goals, but was pleased with his side’s response in the third quarter, kicking four unanswered goals.

“We’ll do a little bit of work on that during the week and we did tinker with that at half-time and it had a good effect in the second half,” he said.

“We gave our forwards better use of the footy…and the pleasing thing was they went back and finished the work up the ground.”

Hunter praised Monique Conti for her dazzling display, the young gun racking up a game-high 28 disposals and five tackles.

“She played fantastic today, she does things that we look at and think ‘that’s incredible’,” Hunter said.

He also commended bookends Courtney Wakefield (three goals, 10 disposals) and Phoebe Monahan (20 disposals) for their efforts.

“Court had a fantastic day in front of goal, Phoebe down back was sensational…the way she took the game on this week and gave us great drive off half-back was fantastic,” Hunter said.

“Alice Edmonds as well, the way she competes in the ruck and gives our midfielders first use, she sent it to the right spots.”

Bendigo products Kodi Jacques and Grace Campbell did not disappoint in front of their home crowd, as Jacques produced a classy third-quarter goal to go with a game-high six tackles and Campbell recorded 10 disposals and four tackles.

“(Kodi had a) fantastic finish in front of goal and with Grace, we love her intent, we love what she brings around the contest,” Hunter said.

“They loved playing here and we love playing up in Bendigo, I’m really pleased that they did well.”

As the Tigers turn their attention towards their next challenge, the Giants in Wagga Wagga, they will continue to focus on building consistency over four quarters.

“It’s a hard thing to practice because we don’t get that much time on the track, but just reiterating the messages and showing the girls what they’ve done really well…and hopefully get more patches of that against GWS,” Hunter said.

“I love the way that they played (against Geelong).

“We’re a big process over outcome side, so I thought the process and the way we went about it was fantastic.”

Geelong's Jordan Ivey has received a one-match AFLW suspension for front-on contact on Richmond's Katie Brennan.

The Tigers captain had to sit out the final quarter of Richmond's loss to Geelong after Ivey made high contact as Brennan had her head over the ball close to three-quarter time.

The incident was classified as careless conduct with medium impact and high contact, with Ivey offered a one-game suspension.

Fellow Cat Aasta O'Connor received reprimands for two separate offences - kneeing and rough conduct - on Richmond's Grace Campbell.

Both offences are classified as $400 sanctions but O'Connor can accept reprimands for both incidents with an early plea.

If O'Connor transgresses again this season, it will be considered a third offence.
