Seven’s Footy Vault: The premiership win that stunned Matthew Richardson

Matthew Richardson would never call a premiership team overrated.

Grand finals are just too hard to get to, let alone win.

But one set of celebrations made the Richmond great think about his own team’s fortunes more than most results.

At the MCG 12 years ago Hawthorn shocked a Geelong side that had lost just one match all year.

The 2013-15 hat-trick of flags with the same nucleus proved the 2008 victory was no fluke.

Yet at the time, Richardson couldn’t believe his eyes.

Six weeks before the Hawks’ incredible result his 11th-placed Tigers were never headed in a 29-point win over second-placed Hawthorn.

“I don’t think I would ever overrate a premiership team but I do remember beating Hawthorn in round 20 (when) we didn’t play finals, Richmond, in 2008,” Richardson told 7NEWS.com.au.

“That was one year I go ‘jeez, we beat that team five weeks ago and didn’t even play finals’.

“Clearly Hawthorn have shown after that they’re one of the great teams after the modern era.”

Prior to the win Richmond’s morale couldn’t have been much lower - they’d just gone down by a combined 126 points to Adelaide and Geelong.

The Hawks had beaten the Tigers’ ladder rivals Collingwood and Brisbane by a combined 123 points.

“(Hawthorn) were always a good team that year, they probably just had an off day and we beat them,” Richardson said.

“But then six weeks later, watching them win the granny, you think ‘hang on a minute, we actually beat that team recently and here we are on holidays’.”

Richardson’s reflections come as he prepares to open Seven’s Footy Vault on Saturday night, throwing back to the five greatest grand finals this century.

After just one grand final between 1980 and 1999 was decided by under two goals, from 2000 onwards the AFL has witnessed seven such results and four were decided by a kick.

Taking on the hard task of ranking the five best, Richardson was forced to weigh up drought-breaking wins with the close contests that footy fans will never forget.

“We have had some blowout grand finals. If it’s your team that’s winning by a lot you think it’s a great grand final,” he said.

“But 2019, last year, when Richmond won by 80-odd points Richmond people think it’s a good grand final. Everyone else thinks it’s a pretty ordinary game!”

Geez we were a dumb side back then with a number of duds :help :lol. No wonder we lost that game.

Vickery and Tuck both going up in the ruck alone with no Blues ruckman in sight and together tapping it straight down to Gibbs which lead to a Carlton goal and started their comeback run in the 3rd :facepalm. Vickery just had no idea how to ruck.

Aaron Edwards stupidly taking advantage when he had a Carlton player right behind him after Vickery was awarded a free in front of goal which would've put us back in front in the last.

Allowing a spud like Duigan to kick 4 goals in the second half as a 'defensive' forward on Lids.

A big difference too was the gameplan with hardly any tackling and no mosquito fleet. We kept oppositions fresh while we were off our feet by the second half. Unlike now where our tackling pressure wears them down and we often run over them. Thank goodness Dimma changed it after the disaster that was 2016.

The only positives re-watching that game [yes I was desperate for some footy :P] was seeing Floss and Grimes standing up as defenders even back then when they were young and inexperienced. Floss was only in his first year IIRC. The other positive was knowing what was to come for both sides while seeing all the Carlton flogs celebrating [who's laughing now!  :snidegrin]. Flags for us compared to spoons for them  :lol. That EF is Carlton's equivalent of our 95 SF. They're still living off a single final win long ago because they were crap for a long time before it and still crap for a long time after it.

Watching the first quarter and geez we were crap  :lol. Ring-a-rosy happy handball that goes nowhere until we turn the ball over :facepalm. Not forgetting all the spuds we had in the side that year  :help.

Amazing it would only be 15 months until we would win the flag  :o. Mind you there would be no Hampson, Vickery, Griffiths, Taylor Hunt, Chaplin, Corey Ellis, Menadue, Morris, Lloyd, Miles in our senior side the following year. No Lids either. It would be a totally transformed team as well as gameplan within one summer and thank gawd for that!

That was Griffiths best game for us. The only time he kicked a bag and the only time he got 20 disposals.

He kicked 4 goals against Essendon that year as well.

He kicked 3 against the Bombers during their 'banned' year.

I completely forget how ripped off we were that night by the umps  ::). That shocker of a deliberate rushed behind decision against Short really was pathetic  :thumbsdown.

Anyway, rewatching that game now you can see we were still working on and transitioning to what is now our gameplan. Some of the elements were there at times such the manic pressure and structuring up behind the ball to force intercepts and repeat F50s. However, we were still trying to play two tall forwards with Elton :facepalm. It left us effectively a man down on field and very inefficient going inside 50. No surprise Elton was never seen again after this game.

ps. It was also a reminder of how brilliant Rance was.
