Title: Will Richmond's lesser paid stars look elsewhere? (Nine)
Post by: one-eyed on June 29, 2020, 11:39:39 PM
Could Dan Butler and Brandon Ellis' success in the early part of the season have Richmond's lesser paid stars looking elsewhere?

@craighutchy thinks so.

Hutchy reckons we're now prone to the "wildebeest" problem if we fall away from premiership contention where opposition clubs will now target our role players who are underpaid given they were sold the premiership dream and stuck around for the success. These role players will see Butler and Ellis getting games on good money elsewhere and seek the same thing.

Hutchy said Richmond has followed the NBA model of paying 5 stars handsomely (Dusty, Cotch, Riewoldt, Prestia & Lynch). He added that Lynch's contract is backended so we'll be paying these high salaries well into the future.

McClure replied that Rance on $1m going will free up some cash to pay these players.

Cornes said why wouldn't Grimes on $400k now that he has his premierships leave for an offer of $850 to secure his financial future.

Lloyd added that this happened at Essendon in his time losing Blumfield, Caracella, Hardwick & Solomon within 18 months.

Our biggest problem is that we give these players away for virtually nothing rather than playing hardball for better draft picks.
If fringe players want to leave let's get a return so we can renew the list.
Funny how quickly you get written off even though it's probably warranted due to form at the moment

Great story on AFL.COM re Dan Butler and how well he is going.  Good luck to him, had his faults but always thought he was a really good player.

Speaking of Butler.. watching him last week v us & now v the Scumbaggers ...where was this composed one-touch stuff and kicking to advantage in the last two years he played for us? Hell even at his peak back in '17 he was never a one-touch player... :shh

His dinky kicks and he skirted when he shouldn't have.

Confidence is a wonderful yet brittle thing. Let’s see how long it lasts....
