Title: Confession time: Which Tiger proved you wrong?
Post by: one-eyed on December 03, 2020, 08:38:45 PM
Borrowing this question from the AFL's twitter account (https://twitter.com/AFL):

Which player proved you wrong?

It’s right around a week before the draft where everyone becomes an expert, but it’s confession time 😅

Which player did you not rate in their draft year and went on to prove you wrong at AFL level?

Liam Baker

I know he was a rookie but after this few games I thought really? What have they done

No hesitation saying I got it horribly wrong

Shane Edwards did take a few years to get going. I know I was not alone in thinking he was not up to it but I (we) were so wrong. A Grader now.

Astbury wrote him off years ago thinking he was a cripple who played his best game on debut like Dean Polo. Has been a solid soldier down back for a handful of years now.

Maybe Shorty too. Just didn't think he'd make it.

Shai Bolton for me. I thought he got ahead of himself and was just trying to take mark of the year and would end up like Bennell with flashes of brilliance but not fulfilling potential. Proved me wrong big time!

Agree with the Soldo one although a big knee on an already slow bloke might prove damaging .... particularly if CCJ can step up in 2021.
The guy I had pegged with actually Dylan Grimes although my knock on him was soundness body wise due to those seemingly endless hamstring injuries / when he did one this season it made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.

McIntosh.... though I've been off & on a few times...likewise Graham... :shh

Like a lot of people, Edwards...but the bloke took nearly 8 years to come good and play at a consistent level so you could hardly blame anyone for being skeptical about him.... :shh

Thought Nankervis was done and trade bait.... :shh

Lambert though still don't rate him as highly as some....:shh

No longer a Tiger but going the other way - Butler  :shh

Soldo & Short still suck ..and while I'm on the subject of Norm Smith runner-ups, so does Houli more often than not....have at me, don't care... :shh

Mine is not form related but Grimes is the guy that I held little hope for early on. Just did not think he could overcome the hamstring injuries

Schulzy got ya too. Though he kicked on elsewhere I guess  :shh

Don't think I've ever been proven wrong. I know too much about the game & anything I've ever said was highly accurate.

Ah yes Schulz. He kept running to the same spots as Richo. No wonder he kicked on at Port when he was the # 1 forward.

Claw will answer the question “which player was a complete and utter disappointment after thinking that they would be a good player “
Or, he will answer the question with Melbourne players

I watched Soldo in the twos down at Frankston one day and thought he was the worst player I had seen at VFL level. Admittedly he was probably in his 10 game of footy ever, but he couldn’t even kick properly.
He is no star now but boy he has come along way.

Ellis as most know,  I have always thought was scared and would get found out eventually- he has played a heap of AFL footy so I guess I have got him wrong- BUT with the club basically telling him to FO, I think I am half right (or more)

And lastly probably Astbury. I just thought he was slow and robotic and injury prone, and would just slowly be pushed out.
Now he is a 3 timer and does a pretty great job most of the time.

Houli is another one I don’t rate as a defender, but purely on stats and achievements, I have got that wrong.
I still think he is/was overrated but also happy for him too,  being a 3 time premiership player.
