Title: Shoulda been Couldabeen Tigers
Post by: PuntRdRoar on May 08, 2006, 09:46:48 PM
Nah not a negative thread but players who over the years we were linked with but we never got the chocolates coz they never came over. I remember in the early 80's articles about

Michael Aish- who on atleast 3 times was on the verge of joining us. Sadly for us he never came over.
Tony Hall- who went to Hawthorn, I swear I recall reading Inside Football who claimed SA star Tony Hall had signed with us.
Richard Anderson- An early 1st Round draft pick who never arrived
Mark Jones- Another early 1st Round draft pick from SA who never came over. Never found what he did in footy though!
John Coleman- famously on his way to Punt Rd before signing with the Bombers.

Anyone have any other names...from the long or short past... some great stories here I reckon, particularly players like Aish who was a star!

Dean Solomon was one of the more recent ones I can recall. In his current form, I'm pretty happy he stayed at the Bombers.

Plugger - would have been a handy pick up and would have been interesting if we had him in 95

I remember years ago hearing talk that we were linked with Mark Riccuito, i think it may have been when Blight was first over there. Now he would have been a very handy player in the yellow and black.

Plugger agreed to come to Punt Road but the Saints wanted Cambo (I think) and one other Tiger so it fell through. If we were psychic we could have offloaded Maxfield and Murphy and got plugger for what we lost anyway.

One that stands out is "the best player to come out of SA" - Brett Chalmers. We drafted him with a ridiculously late pick (over #100) but he refused and he ended up at the Crows where he never lived up to his reputation.

Andrew Payze was another IIRC.

Yeah he was. By the time the Crows came in to being Payze was way past his best. Played for the Corws but was never the devasting midfielder that we Tiger fans had been told about

Too be honest we wouldn't have missed Naishy either. That missed goal after the siren down at Geelong early in 96 that would have won us the game seemed to totally destory his confidence. Naishy was never the same player after that. Then again it could of been Walls brilliant coaching  :P.

The only problem with that was who would have been left to kick it to plugger.... Duncan, Rogers, Daffy, Harrison, .... :nope  ;).
