Preview Round 7
Friday, March 12
Gold Coast v Richmond at Metricon Stadium, 6.40pm AEST
The Suns will be thrilled to be back on their own home deck for the first time since round one, having had games in Brisbane, Sydney, two in Perth and last week in Adelaide. Jamie Stanton (fractured ankle) is a huge loss, but Maddy Levi (knee) should add some flexibility in the ruck and up forward.
The Tigers were completely blown out of the water in the first half against North Melbourne, but held them much better in the second. The return of Mon Conti (hamstring tightness) will be a huge boost for the team, and they've got steady bookends in Courtney Wakefield and Harriet Cordner.
Tip: Richmond blew a golden chance to record its first ever win when these two teams met, back in round two last year. They won't let a victory slip again.
Tigers by 23 points.

----------------------------------------
RICHMOND has survived a huge fright before eventually overcoming winless Gold Coast by 15 points at Metricon Stadium.
After keeping the Suns scoreless in the second term, the Tigers opened up a 15-point lead at half-time and appeared headed for a routine victory.
But the hosts tore up the script in the third term, with their manic pressure and superior energy levels stunning the visitors whose lead was at one stage trimmed to just three points.
However, that is as close as Gold Coast would get as Richmond survived the onslaught and steadied with the next three goals before running out 6.5 (41) to 4.2 (26) winners.
Tigers captain Katie Brennan led from the front again, kicking three goals to go with 15 disposals and five marks, while star midfielder Monique Conti was a welcome return from a hamstring injury as she amassed a game-high 25 disposals as well as seven tackles.
"We all know Monti is a star but the thing that we love about her is her pressure and her run both ways," Brennan told Fox Footy post-game.
"Just having her in to lead our midfield group, we've got Ellie [McKenzie] in there now and she does a power of work, but Monti is a key member of that midfield ... so we're pretty glad to have her back."
No.1 draft pick Ellie McKenzie (20 possessions and a goal), Kate Dempsey (22) and Sarah Hosking (21) also played crucial roles for Richmond.
"Our pressure is something we pride ourselves on and we really brought that today," McKenzie said.
"We probably could've played (hard for) four quarters, we probably really only played three, so when we put a four-quarter effort together we'll be really dangerous and hopefully get a few more wins."
Kate Surman was Gold Coast's best player with 16 disposals and a goal, and she enjoyed good support from Maddison Levi (two goals), who laid a game-high nine tackles, Lauren Ahrens (21 touches), Alison Drennan (20) and Kalinda Howarth (18).
Richmond looked more threatening in attack all night and it almost tripled Gold Coast for marks inside 50 (11-4).
The Suns did all the early attacking but despite recording seven of the first eight inside 50s, only had one Levi goal to show for their bright start.
After settling into the contest, the Tigers wrested back the momentum and made the hosts pay for their inefficiency, dominating the territory battle and kicking the next three goals to assert themselves.
The ball hardly left Richmond's forward half in the second quarter, placing Gold Coast's defence under enormous pressure.
The Suns hit back hard after half-time, but their efforts were ultimately in vain, leaving them entrenched in the bottom two on the ladder with an 0-7 record.
The expansion club has now gone winless in their past eight matches in a streak that dates back almost a full year to March 15, 2020.
Meanwhile, after losing their first 10 AFLW matches, the Tigers have now won two of their last three.

Katie Brennan’s class key to Tigers win over the Suns
Roy Ward
The Age
March 13, 2021
Richmond skipper Katie Brennan led from the front and Ellie McKenzie added further evidence to her case as the Rising Star award as the Tigers scored their second win of the season on Friday night.
The Tigers beat Gold Coast by 15 points, 6.5 (41) to 4.2 (26), at Metricon Stadium, but what will please the yellow-and-black supporters is the way the side’s big guns stood tall when challenged.
The Tigers looked to be in control at half-time, holding a 15-point lead, but two goals to the Suns to open the third term had them within three points and within sight of their first win in 2021.
But this was where the likes of Brennan (15 disposals, three goals), McKenzie (20 disposals, one goal) and Monique Conti (25 disposals) showed their class, lifting and finding more of the football when it mattered.
In the last term, the Tigers surged clear and with confidence high they will be desperate for a win at Punt Road when they host West Coast next round.
Tigers coach Ryan Ferguson said Brennan was leading from the front.
“She is an experienced player but she is improving each week and getting to know what she can do with this group of players,” Ferguson said.
“She kicked some nice goals but her leadership around the little things like pressure, intent and communication with her teammates - that set her up for a good game tonight.”
Ferguson added that McKenzie had quickly adjusted to playing at elite level.
“We just wanted her to come in and work really hard, lay some foundations so she can have a long career,” Ferguson said.
“But she has clearly grown to this level pretty quickly and she is becoming a very good player in a very short period of time.”
Both sides looked to run in numbers and create with the Suns first to score when the aggressive Maddison Levi ran onto the football and kicked an open goal.
But Richmond’s forays were becoming more precise and after Sophie Molan hit the closely defended Brennan on a lead, the Tigers skipper went back and kicked truly from 35 metres out to tie scores at 6-6 going into quarter-time.
The Suns were willing and physical around the contest but they couldn’t keep enough of the football in the second term as Richmond continued to flow forward with hard running through the lines.
The Tigers weren’t as lethal with all their inside 50s and they could feel a little hard done by when the Suns looked to have gone over the line with holding or late tackles, but Richmond did manage to kick two crucial goals via Courtney Wakefield and the ever-dangerous Brennan.
A 21-6 lead at half time looked potentially a game-breaker but former St Kilda star Ali Drennan began pushing forward and winning key possessions with her soccer out of the centre-circle rolling forward and ending up with Levi, who picked it up cleanly and kicked her second goal to open the third term.
Kate Surman kicked an opportunistic goal soon after, snapping on her right foot and putting it through making it 22-19.
The Suns were right in the match but Rio Olympic basketballer turned Tigers recruit Tessa Lavey used her speed and kicking skills to put Christina Bernardi into an open goal with her kick from 40 metres rolling through for a major.
The Tigers led by 10 points to begin the last term but Rising Star favourite McKenzie marked and kicked truly to extend that margin with 12 minutes to play.
Brennan added a third goal to push her side clear and begin celebrations.
Conti back with aplomb
Tigers star Conti returned from a week out and was her regular classy self, tirelessly winning possessions throughout the match.
As skilful as Conti was, she didn’t have things all her way as she was chased down and caught holding the ball in the third term by Tori Groves-Little.
Conti had 25 disposals and seven tackles.
Lavey leaps forward
Olympic basketballer-turned-footballer Lavey continues to come along in leaps and bounds for the Tigers despite having played just five games.
Lavey (13 disposals) was a constant threat to run clear on Friday night and her influence grew over the game.
Lavey’s highlight came at a crucial moment in the third term with the Suns just three points down. She took the ball down the wing and kicked into the forward line where she found Bernardi for arguably the most import goal of the match.
Whether Lavey ends up going to Tokyo with the Australian Opals remains up the air as there are plenty of contenders for the point-guard roles but she is fast becoming a player to watch for the Tigers.

Standard of umpiring still deplorable
If they are deplorable, then they are better than the quality of the football
Watching the “highlights” was bad enough
We got a free for on the full. Our player ran 15 metres outside the filed of play and the umpiring allowed it....
Suns player had their head ripped off not once but twice in the same passage of play and the female umpiring paid holding the ball when the player no longer had the ball :o
Then there was the free for a sling tackle that wasn't... list goes on. This standard isn't a once off, been happening for 5 seasons now. The overall standard of the comp has improved especially when you watch the clubs that have been there from the start. Sadly, cannot say the same about the umpiring
And IMHO the standard of umpiring does have some impact on the standard of play
-
Quality is getting better which you can see from the draftees that have been playing for years unlike the imported athletes
