Ch 7's opening ceremony commentary last night had Johanna Griggs bringing up each country's wars/atrocities and other irrelevant oddities :huh3 while Hamish was comparing each country's population size to the MCG  :wallywink.

Mongolia enters ...
Johanna Griggs: (quoting wikipedia) "Bruce, it's the world's most sparsely populated."

Iraq enters ...
Johanna Griggs: "This is still their eleventh olympics since 1980 despite all the Iraq-related wars."

Myanmar enters ...
Johanna Griggs: 'Better known as Burma... the coup ... Aung San Suu Kyi.'

Rwanda enters ...
Bruce McAvaney: "Rwanda have been through some terribly hard times..."

Johanna Griggs: "But they've still managed to make it to ten Olympics, Bruce."

Niger enters ...
Johanna Griggs: "Interesting fact, 70% of the population of this country is under 20" [ed. due to conflict]

Oman enters ...
Johanna Griggs: "Isla Fisher, our fabulous Australian actor and partner of Sasha Baron Cohen, was actually born there."

Cambodia enters ...
Johanna Griggs: '... "activities" of the Khmer Rouge ...'

China enters ...
Bruce McAveney: "China is not as strong at swimming as they once were."

Johanna Griggs: "Yeah, there's probably a reason for that."

Johanna Griggs:  "I'm excited for the Americans vs USA in the pool."

And every time a small nation entered the stadium ...

Hamish McLachlan: "Hey Bruce, did you know their whole nation's population could fit inside the MCG."

Matildas will hopefully still get through as one of the best 3rd place sides (or beat the Americans). Our girls played well for most of the game against Sweden but just lacked the polish of the Swedes when it mattered. It didn't help that VAR didn't give us a penalty just before half-time when Kerr was brought down in the box. Although, when we did get a penalty in the second half Sam failed to put it away to level the scores. Sam is brilliant in general play but penalty taking is her weakest trait. Unfortunately, there's no else willing or more capable to take penalties.

Woeful coaching by Graeme Arnold stuffed up the Olyroos :banghead.

Goes into the game with a negative mindset not chasing the win against a winless opposition that hadn't scored & no surprise we end up losing and getting knocked out :banghead.

Those long throws into the box was apparently his secret weapon straight out of the 1980s NSL  ::).

Not to mention bringing on a CB to play up front with us behind needing to score :facepalm.

The breaking news is an American pole vaulter has tested positive for covid. So our athletics squad is now isolating from the rest of the Aussie team.

Matildas 4
Brits      3

Fantastic result, Matildas  :clapping

Micah absolutely brilliant in goal. What a garbage penalty call by the way that wasn't VARed by the ref ::). Karma for it to be saved and then us going down the other end to score via Fowler's deflected shot :yep.

Sam Kerr showed her class & poise once again and delivered twice when it mattered.

Heart in your mouth stuff though as we need to learn to control time and the ball when protecting a lead & not just fall back deep giving away all possession.

The Matildas are sweating on the fitness of captain Sam Kerr ahead of Monday night’s Olympic semi-final against Sweden with the striker in doubt due to soreness and fatigue.

Did FIFA hire SHocking for tonight's SF?  ::)

Matilda's robbed by a disgrace of a ref making things up :thumbsdown.

https://twitter.com/7olympics/status/1422161381483286529

You can tell there was nothing in it as none of the Swedes showed any reaction. If they had been blocked or fouled they would've complained straight away.

The ref could've let the play play out then go to VAR to check for any 'block' but instead robbed us as you can't go to VAR if the whistle is blown before the ball is in the back of the net  >:(.

ps. Silly by Carpenter at the end by the way. Getting a red card in the last few seconds rules her out of the bronze medal match.

Boomers lost to the USA 78-97. Started brilliantly and we lead by 11 pts in the 2nd quarter but we then got smashed as the Yanks went up a few gears especially after half-time.

Can't remember the last time I saw a ref call full time when the attacking team earns a corner. The injured American held up play for 4 mins so there should've been 8 mins of injury time at least.

Anyway as for the game as a whole: Brave stuff by the Matildas to get it back to 3-4 with a chance to equalize but a poor first half defensively and in terms of overall intensity allowing the Yanks to dominate play was costly in the end. It looked like we really missed Carpenter in our back 4.

Yep some real poor defensive errors led to two of their goals
