Title: Our greatest ever 'bang-stuff' pick in a National Draft?
Post by: one-eyed on November 01, 2021, 04:26:58 PM
AFL website says Chris Newman.

-------------------------------------------

Chris Newman (pick No.55, 2000) - It's safe to say the national draft hasn't been Richmond's best source of hidden talent, having cashed in more successfully through the rookie draft, particularly in the recent years. Saying that, the Tigers landed a cherished skipper with pick No.55, with Newman going on to play 268 games between 2002-15, one of the toughest eras for the club. The half-back overcame a badly broken leg relatively early in his career to captain Richmond from 2009-2012, leading a consistently under-the-pump defence with his clean kicking.

Fellow backman Andy Kellaway was plucked from Richmond's reserves with pick No.71 in 1997, racking up 172 games in a courageous career that produced a Jack Dyer medal and All-Australian berth.

Shane Tuck was a mainstay in Richmond's midfield during the 2000s, playing 173 games after his selection with pick No.73 in the 2003 draft.

Jack Graham (pick No.53, 2016) could go on to take Newman's crown by the end of his career.

Jack Graham is doing ok.

Best pick from other teams I reckon was James Hird at 79

Kane Lambert has not been bad at Draft: No. 46, 2015 rookie draft. But I suppose that doesn't count.

Not national draft but Bachar Houli in the PSD was a steal. And the best bit was we stole him from the bummers. Ha ha

Yep and they were hidden intentionally.

The WA clubs have a habit of doing that too.

Our greatest bang for buck in the National Draft???

Dustin Martin would have to be in the conversation. His presence won us 3 premierships. Plus he has put bums on seats and corporates throwing sponsorship $ at us.

True! How many kids buy the #4 and the don’t argue has been such a good trade mark for him and club. Also the bums on seats can’t be underestimated
