Carlton player’s career up in the air over COVID vaccine refusal

The AFL is grappling with a new vaccine shock with a Carlton player refusing to get the COVID jab.
The player’s AFL career is now up in the air after the league recently mandated COVID vaccinations for all players.
The AFL has told 7NEWS there is no intention to bend the rules for any player.
It is now up to the Blues to determine if they will terminate the player’s contract or place him on the inactive list where he will earn the minimum wage of $90,000.
While it’s a difficult situation for the AFL, it’s one the league has long planned for.
“I think we’ll be talking about a small handful of players (who don’t vaccinate), and we’ll continue to work those players, provide them education and health advice in relation to that,” the AFL’s head of legal and integrity Andrew Dillon said.
Should the player continue to refuse the jab, he will be the first men’s player to take the position.
Adelaide star Deni Varnhagen - who also worked as an ICU nurse - opted out of the AFLW last week, telling the Crows she didn’t want to be vaccinated.
7NEWS has chosen not to name the AFL player in question.

SO just a reminder
Don't speculate, guess or name anyone unless it is announced via main stream media
-
Channel nine has described the player as a star, which rules out 99.9% of the Carlton list

Further to this… have now had confirmation AFL players at Coll, Ess, Haw, Melb, Rich and WB have all had at least one jab. Geel and NM not expecting any push back.

Liam Jones is the Carlton player who is yet to adhere to the AFL’s double-jab mandate as a clubmate tests positive to Covid-19.

Liam Jones has today made the decision to announce his retirement.
We wish him all the best and thank him for his time at the Club.
The Club will now work closely with the AFL regarding options available to replace Jones’ spot on the list for the 2022 season.

Very hard to understand... Makes me wonder if he has just had enough. Perhaps a law suit will come at some stage from a Lawyer getting in his ear.
-
Imagine being his teammate. You wouldn't be happy. Footy is about the team; not irrational & selfish individualism.
Anyway Carlton's loss. One of Jack or Lynch now get off the leash in round 1 with Weitering the Blues only experienced key defender left.

This guy really made a career out of seemingly nothing after being dumped by the Dogs.
I have plenty of respect for him and I know from 2 degrees of separation (mate who shagged Broady, Jones tried too but failed) that he appreciated every chance he got and was almost perpetually stressed about playing well enough to earn himself another contract.
I sincerely doubt he gave it up without tremendous stress and thought.
-
He has made a choice, he will live with the consequences of that choice
Team is better off without him if he felt that strongly about not getting the jab
So be it
Time to move on
